Dr Alex Tanis, age 21, had begun to run out of options. He had tried the International Bachelor’s University and after they kept losing his ad, address, phone number several times, he was ready to give up. Then he managed to get a few interviews. Three finally flew or drove to meet him. Only one of those three didn’t just turn the car around and drive away. The one who did make it into the building lasted less than an hour. He did have a lot of very, very strange rules. The guy had a list of phobias a mile long. Just walking into his estate home it looked like some fraternity prank.
Dr Tanis lived on a rather large family estate north of Boston. It had been around since before the Revolutionary War, not that you could find a lot of records. The manor house looked abandoned and haunted. It was huge. But then the grounds weren’t exactly well kept up except a small area up near the entry. The old TV series Addams Family came to mind. Creepy. It looked like one of those places kids dared other kids to survive the night.
Alex Tanis himself was well known on campus and more than a few girls had a crush on him. He had that cute thing going for him. Most girls associated archaeology with Indiana Jones. He had gotten his PhD’s at age 16. He taught more than archaeology. (Archaeology, Linguistics, and Mathematics (Cyphers)). He concentrated on dead languages and decryption science.
Eric Blackwell was the young man who had placed the add. He was Alex’s former employee. Or rather soon to be former. He was moving on. Eric was everything Alex wasn’t. He was the guy most parents dreaded having their daughters bring home. Most people expected him to have a little black book filled with girls’ names. He like fast cars and fast women. He was known to play guitar and people thought he was some sort of music major. Half the rumors were false.
As people had a bad tendency to get lost trying to find Alex’s estate, Eric had offered to drive them back and forth.
Some of the Estate Rules
Entry Foyer. Lights stay lit at all times (inside and out).
Always carry a flashlight, if not two.
Alex never goes out at night - EVER.
No mirrors on the estate - or near Alex. This includes compacts. You may use a cell phone camera though - but Alex will need to install security software.
No standing pools of water large enough for a clear reflection.
NEVER touch a web in the manor - especially doorways and windows. (If one blocks the only way to a part of the house, don’t disturb it. Call Alex.
Stay out of the basement - except along the lit path.
Stay out of the Rare Books section of the Library. (It is locked for your safety.)
