Jace Rosson

Name: Jace Rosson
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 140
Age: 28
Race/Species: Human

Tier/Influence: 2 (local); Skilled strategist and melee combatant.

Group(s): None

Appearance: Jace has tan skin, brown eyes, and short but unkempt blonde hair. His back, though usually covered, is adorned with various crisscrossing scars. Due to his past, he currently wears mostly patchwork clothing, but on a typical day, he wears semi-formal wear, typically a black suit and pants with a blue necktie. His old clothing consisted of things you’d probably find on a farm; dusty overalls and a worn white T-shirt, along with dark blue jeans that had seen their fair share of wear and tear.

Personality: Once a simple man living on a ‘ranching world’ at the border of the United Federation’s territory, Jace’s time as a slave has left him bitter and cynical. However, when in mixed company he is typically calm and collected, almost friendly to a degree. On his own or with those he trusts, he can be seen as cold and calculating, yet isn’t above some degree of jubilation upon victory.

Abilities, Talents, Traits, Powers:
  • ( 2 ) Strategist -- Having led a revolt against his captors with the assistance of like-minded slaves, Jace is keen with military strategy. Being self-taught, he is obviously nowhere near as skilled as a veteran general, but he is capable of ensuring that a fight is somewhat in the favor of him and his allies.
  • ( 2 ) Diplomat -- Part of escaping his captors and freeing other slaves was being able to convince them that he was trustworthy. Jace will typically resort to peaceful resolutions in the favor of both parties if combat is either impossible or more resource-intensive, but is not above double crossing his enemies.
  • ( 2 ) Melee Combatant -- Armed with a Plasma Pickaxe, or similarly-dimensioned weapon, Jace can deal damage and block attacks with relative ease. Though he has used firearms before, he is without a doubt more effective in close-quarters.

Items:
  • ( 2 ) Plasma Pickaxe -- A small, foldable ‘pickaxe’ designed to mine through rock and material that the average pick or drill cannot. One end of the actual pick is normal steel, while the other becomes coated with super-heated plasma when a trigger on the handle is pulled. This ability has a finite amount of power, and must be recharged from time to time. It is effective at cutting through hard material, but as Jace has seen, it’s equally useful as a weapon.

History: Jace spent a majority of his childhood and early teenage years on a small, recently colonzied world at the border of the United Federation of Planets’ territory. He and his family, as well as a majority of his neighbors, made a living by ranching on this planet, raising cattle on the green plains this planet had been deemed worthy of settlement for. The only time Jace really spent off that world was when he and his mother would take shipments of meat and animal products to nearby trading posts in their small cargo ship. They didn’t have much, but Jace was mostly content with his simple life.

He was alone, caring for some cattle when a small fleet of dark ships attacked his small town.

Their meagre resistance from these attackers was met with great force, missiles and plasma turning their years of work into melted metal and charred landmarks. Those who were not outright killed were taken away, pulled onto the ship by telekinetic users, Jace and his parents included, and thrown into a cargo hold; their small town left to smoulder on their now desolate land.

Shipped many light years away, the farmers found themselves dumped onto a desert world, their only instruction being to mine, and bring the slavers whatever metals and gems they could find. Ships and drones hovered far above the ragtag group, watching their every move as they marched across the dunes.

As Jace and his fellow slaves would soon find, these slavers didn’t work like one may think. They had come across several small ‘slave settlements’ in their travels, places where small ramshackle towns had been established, by other captives. They would learn that the slavers would leave these settlements alone, so long as none of them became ‘too big’ or didn’t pay up through work.

Jace was just 17 when he was forced into this way of life. It wasn’t long before many of his family and friends perished, either from dehydration or from other slaves on the planet preying on them. He had heard some slaves keep up hope that soon the United Federation would come to help them, sending a force far greater than this fleet of slavers to annihilate their captors and send them back home.

Jace waited. He watched his father and mother waste away, left in a sandy, unmarked grave, yet he waited. He watched as those who kept up hope of being saved slowly lose it, or fell into a life of banditry, or tried to free themselves only to be destroyed by a slaver’s drone.

Jace soon gave up hope that the Federation would ever come to them. He realized that if they ever wanted to be free of this hostile place, they would have no choice but to save themselves. He worked diligently, travelling from settlement from settlement, organizing plans, preparing weapons, and forging alliances. It would be another 11 years before his plan would go into motion.

Uniting on a day that the slavers came to collect their tithes, the slaves revolted, using what little they had in a last-ditch effort to destroy their captors and free themselves of slavery. The battle was costly, many slaves turned into dust by the slavers’ superior weaponry. However, Jace led a last charge, commandeering one of the ships that had not yet taken flight, and turned the tide of the battle. Firing into the ships that were bombarding the ground, many were sent plummeting to the sand, the slavers inside charged upon by the angered slaves. It soon became apparent that this advantage was not going to win the fight, as the ships began to focus fire on the commandeered craft. Rushing to escape ships, Jace and the other slaves took flight, with a few ships in pursuit. As other escapecraft were shot down, Jace soon found himself outside the planet’s atmosphere, and the slaver ships returning to the surface of the planet, writing him off for dead.

Left dissapointed that he was only able to free himself, and angered that so many had to die for only a handful of captives to escape, he soon brought up the ship’s navigation systems, setting a course for the nearest inhabited area. He took to FTL speed, going as far as the ship’s fuel reserves would take him, and prepared himself.

He would not let the Federation get away with this. Leaving so many people to die, while they enjoyed a life of luxury, barely intervening with the people in their jurisdiction unless they became a threat. He despised them for what happened to his friends and family, feeling as if they had been considered acceptable losses.

He defeated one group of tyrants. He could do it again.

---
OOC CLARIFICATION: Although Jace does harbor a deeply-seated grudge against the United Federation, I do not expect him to succeed in combatting them to any large degree. After all, they’re the largest, most powerful faction in the galaxy. I don’t want to make it look like I expect much to come of his want for rebellion, and frankly if nothing even came of it I’d accept that. How far his fight goes, if it even goes anywhere at all, I’m leaving up to the jurisdiction of the players/mods. If it seems too cliche or whatever, I will gladly change his story.
