The Caretaker

"Thuruht, as the Killiks call themselves, will return to the stars. They can survive remarkably well in the void. They will live on long after this station is gone. That is more than I can say for myself. I am one of the last of my kind, lingering far beyond my time to act as custodian for this construct. Now that it has passed into your control, my role as caretaker ends, as shall my life. The Tempest Eye was the only thing keeping me alive; it fueled my longevity the same as it fuels the generator. When it is removed, both the generator and myself will cease to function."

I nod and remove a datapad from one of my pouches, offering it to the Rakata. "Before we go, we'd appreciate some piece of your personal history. It doesn't need to be expansive, but something to remember you by is better than nothing."

Takes the datapad. "How strange. I was never meant to be a scholar or historian; only a caretaker left behind. But now... perhaps my role has changed. I will impart whatever knowledge I can to you before my end, if only to help you you and your society to learn from the mistakes and successes of my own."

Caalin Daemon

I smile. "Wow. You turned the 'entity' we feared so much into an ally. Congrats. Marek would have been proud."

I smile sadly as Caretaker works on the datapad. "He would be impressed that we even got to this point. Luci, let Koraline know we're bringing cargo on board. I'll wake up the crew." Closing my eyes, everyone on the Redshifter would hear my voice saying to awaken and get ready to takeoff.

I call up Koraline. "We're about ready to leave, and we have cargo. Our adventure in the Maw is over t last. Looks like we're headed to Hoth next."

Koraline Okarr

"Hoth, huh? I have some old White Maw friends there that owe me favors. Maybe we can recruit them to help us too." I look around the ship. "I don't know what you guys did, but it worked. The Killiks all of a sudden just stopped attacking us and ran away. Just in time too, because I don't know how much longer the shields would have held."

Millu'ci'vanda

"Glad to hear you are all safe. Zar'kun just woke up the crew too, so why don't you go get them ready to take off. They thing controlling their thoughts isn't a threat anymore, so everyone should be on the same side now. We'll see you all soon." I end the call and look at Zar'kun. "Well, I'd call this mission an overall success. Nobody died, at least."

I look at Caretaker as he seems to be wrapping up what he has to write. "No, none of us did. The Caretaker however..." I sigh. "Not all the Rakata were devoured by the Darkside, he's proof of that. A pity we can't save him."

I think for a moment. “Perhaps there is a way. He says he survived all these years by drawing energy from the Tempest Eye. Perhaps if we took him with us, he could continue to live off of it. And who knows? Maybe we could find a way to help him survive without having to constantly draw from the Eye. That is... if he wants to.”

“Your probably right. Maybe I’m just feeling a bit extra sympathetic. My people... that is to say, the people whose bloodline I share, the Sith... they’re a dying breed too. I know that most of them are evil and their culture revolves around war and the Dark Side, but I can’t help but feel a bit sad for them. They don’t have any choice but to follow the dark path, and though Greshh and I both tried to turn them to a better, more peaceful path, I fear their legacy shall always be that of darkness, and the last Red Sith will die out in vain.”

"I still believe there's hope for the Purebloods, Caelin, and I always will. When this is all over, perhaps we can find a way to help them." I look at the Tempest Eye, watching it pulse with energy. "Now, to figure out how to move this thing to the ship..."

Jude Sucal

The Ryder’s Revenge jumps out of hyperspace just outside the Coruscant system, far enough away from the battle to not be detected by the Republic or the Mandalorians. I check my chronometer to make sure I am on time for the meet up, and a few seconds later, another ship appears on the radar; a beat up looking freighter. I signal them to prepare for docking procedure.

Once the umbilical tube has been connected between the two ships, I head back to the airlock. I arrive just in time for them to hiss open, and a very familiar face looks down at me. I bow before her. “Welcome, Master.”

Hayden Twilight

Grimaces, then waves Jude hastily to his feet. “None of that. I ain’t your master anymore, kid. I’m not a Sith anymore either.” I walk past him, looking around at the fancy ship. “Where did you get this thing?”

Jude Sucal

“It was Naberrie’s, but I took it after she came down with a case of brain dead. Curtesy of Zar’kun Je’and.”

Hayden Twilight

“My dad’s Master, and HJ’s grandpa. Never had the pleasure of extended contact with him. Mostly just holidays and family get togethers. But if Uncle Jerus was a pain in my neck, I can bet the old man is probably worse.”

Jude Sucal

Shrugs. “Personally, I prefer Zar’kun over Jerus.”

Hayden Twilight

“Whatever.” I give Jude a look that says I am done with conversation. “Where is she? The girl, I mean.”

Jude Sucal

“Down here, locked in the crew quarters.” I lead Hayden down the hall. “Just... be careful. She doesn’t look like much, but the baby is extremely powerful. It’s already killed at least once before, and if the rumors that this is Vitiate are true, than it is far worse then that.”

Hayden Twilight

I hold up my hand, and my fingers flow yellow. “I can handle it. I haven’t used my Force Dispersal powers in a while, but if worse comes to worse, I just cut the kid off and pluck the sucker out.”

Jude Sucal

I give a nervous look. “Is uhh... is that the plan?”

Hayden Twilight

“It’s Plan B. I don’t know what Plan A is yet, but I’ll figure it out once I see her. Now open the door and leave me to it. You just get us to the planet’s surface.”

Jude Sucal

I nod, pressing the button to unlock the crew cabin. “Good luck.” I head back to the cockpit and begin the procedure to undock from the ugly freighter. A moment later, we detach and the freighter floats away, abandoned.

Hayden Twilight

Meanwhile, I walk into the small cabin and see the girl curled up on one of the bed. She is smaller than I expected, and it makes her pregnant belly look even larger in comparison.
When she looks up at me, it is with eyes full of sadness, and I can tell it is not only for herself. “How are you feeling?” I ask. “Comfortable? I hope Jude hasn’t roughed you up too much.”

Korre

I have the urge to make a snippy comeback about feeling better if I hadn’t been kidnapped, but then recognition dawns on me. “You... your Hayden Teilight, aren’t you? I’ve seen your face in holos. You tried to assassinate Chancellor Sucal a year ago.”

Hayden Twilight

“Yeah... but obviously it didn’t take.” I pull up a chair. “For that, I’m sorry. Maybe if I’d gone for the head, you’d still be a normal little girl from Naboo and none of these horrible things would be happening to you.”

Korre

Little girl? I’m 23, and if m my math was correct, Hayden was only 18. Yet... I couldn’t help but seeing her point. Hayden was tall and powerful, while I was small and... well, not a fighter like her. I guess in that regard, I was a girl compared to her.

“If your sorry, you should let me go. You don’t have to do this.”

Hayden Twilight

“No, I do. I really do.” I sign. “You see... you weren’t Sucal’s first choice. I was, and I refused. Because of that, he chose you for some reason, and now I feel responsible. I need to make this right... not for you though. For everyone. We both know that baby is anything but normal. Whether it actually is the Sith Emperor or just a really powerful kid is still up in the air for me, but what I do know is that Sucal wants it BAD. From what I gather, most if not all of his plans hinge on it.”

Korre

“Which is why I was being hidden. I was safe until Jude kidnapped me!”

Hayden Twilight

“No, you weren’t. You were protected, but you weren’t safe. From what Jude tells me, you have been hounded every step of the way by agents of Sucal. That’s going to keep up for the rest of your life, and the rest of the kid’s life. I don’t care how good the Sith Hunters are. Not even my mom can protect you forever. Hell, she couldn’t even stop a 12 year old from taking you away!”

Korre

“Yeah, but she did protect me from Gendry and his gang. It was only Jude’s betrayal that slipped past her.”

Hayden Twilight

“And that was her fault. You gotta expect everyone to eventually betray you for one reason or another because that’s just how people are. Everyone has an agenda they want to follow, and if another person stands in their way, they are going to find a way around them... or through them. Just like eventually, Sucal is going to find a way to get you, and there’s nothing at all to be done about that.” I pause a moment. “Well, I mean, there are one or two things, but you won’t like them.”

Korre

“Like what?” I lean closer. “You aren’t the first to threaten to kill me or my son out of fear. That was how Ryder died.”

Hayden Twilight

“I’m not Ryder, and I’m not threatening you. Not yet, at least.”

Korre

“Then what are you doing?”

Hayden Twilight

“I don’t know yet. I was hoping you could help me figure it out. Personally, I’m not in the business of hurting innocent people, but then again, you aren’t the only innocent person. There are over a trillion people on Coruscant alone. If I had to choose between all the people on all the planets in all the galaxy or one girl and her potentially extinct level powerful son.... the choice is obvious.”

Korre

“Then why haven’t you done it yet? You know the simplest way to end my child as a threat, yet you and Jude have been beating around the bush about it.”

Hayden Twilight

“Because I really... REALLY don’t want to do that. That’s why I’m hoping beyond hope that Plan A goes well... whatever Plan A turns out to be.” I stand up. “We’re meeting some old friends of mine on Coruscant. We can figure out what to do from there. Until then... just sit tight.”

Jude Sucal

I pilot the ship towards the Mandalorian’s Blockade, and as expected, they immediately ping the ship demanding to know who we are. “Jude. I’m a friend of HJ Twilight. He said you guys could use a hand. Code phrase: Haat, Ijaa, Haa'it.” I smile to myself. HJ told us all that code phrase just in case any of us ran afoul of the Mandalorians. It was supposed to signify us as a friend of Mand’alor.

As expected, the Mandalorian comm Officer ran my name and the code phrase up the chain of command, and within a few minutes, I am given clearance to land, along with an escort of fighters. “Thank you so much.” I pilot the ship towards Coruscant, a fighter coming in on either side of us. I didn’t know how in HJ’s pocket the Mandalorian’s were, but I made a mental note to keep Korre’s identity secret. Chances are, they wouldn’t all be on board for what Hayden and I had planned...

On Alderaan, Becca and I were making the final preparations for chasing after Jude down and hopefully getting Korre away from him and Hayden. I go over the coordinates where the tracking beacon exited hyperspace one more time to be sure it wasn't a malfunction. "That crazy little bastard! They're taking her right into the rancor's den!"

Synclair Twilight-Je'and

"You know your niece. They have something planned that they're so sure will work." I was cleaning my blaster pistols near the console Jerus was on, making sure they still worked after having gone so long without use while Rose slept in a bassinet nearby. "What do you think Becca? Think they really are crazy?"

I shake my head. “Not crazy; determined. Hayden has been comping at the bit to go after Sucal since we lost her the first time. And as much as I hate to say it... I think Greshh was one of the few things keeping her from running off to face him herself. Now he’s gone, and she has somehow given Caalin the slip. There isn’t anyone to rain her in anymore, and she’s libel to do a lot of drastic things if she believes it’s going to bring an end to his threat.”

HJ Twilight

“But Ava has Coruscant surrounded. If the reports are true, she could actually take the planet herself soon. Why would Hayden risk going there now? It’s a war zone!”

"Because she thinks that Sucal might be at his most vulnerable. Thanks to dad's shielding technique, he won't even know she's there, only that Jude is. Which, well, would present it's own unique problems. I don't think that Becca and I can put off chasing them down any longer."

Synclair Twilight-Je'and

“Hey! I raised a rancor from an egg! I think I know how to take care of a baby. You just... throw food at it every couple hours and clean up when it makes a mess.” I give Dad a look. “Speaking of which, I can’t decide if I should come with you or not. Huntress got hurt bad at the Foundry, and needs a lot of healing. I don’t know how keen she is to let some random Organa’s tend to her, so I might have to stay and keep her company. But... I want to find Hayden too.”

“You can’t neglect your pet either though. She’s far away from her natural habitat and injured. If you abandon her to strangers, it could end very badly.” I give him a sad look. “I want you to be there, but the more immediately problem for you is Huntress. Jerus and I... AND Jakito for that matter can handle Hayden.”

HJ Twilight

“Alright. Fair point. Maybe I’ll join you guys after Huntress is healed up enough to function without me.”

Becca Twilight

I look at Jerus. “I almost forgot; Jakito is still on Coruscant with Vette. There is no way Hayden could mask herself fully from him if he caught her scent in the Force.” I frown. “I hope the Mandalorians didn’t give him any trouble.”
