No I have not and probably will not. However I know the most popular methods of preserving food involve salt, and lots of it, and/or smoking it. All this is to extract the moisture from it.

There is also pickling but pickled fish probably won't travel as well in a frozen hinterland.

Not burning but yes. A few of the towns have raffles for humanoid sacrifice every new moon. Some offer food. Others that can do neither give up warmth for the night.
