Deep below the city of Yomisaka…

At exactly 7:49 AM on the twenty-third of March, something was uncovered during an excavation for Yomisaka’s newly-blooming subway system. No true reports were sent out when the excavator hit the wall of the cave, nor did any seismic or geological instruments detect any form of cavern in the general area.

When the workers themselves witnessed the site, a feeling of drowsiness overcame them. After a few seconds, all employees of the city-sponsored site were unconscious, including the people supervising the project.

What occurred afterwards was truly bizarre. The tunnel network would be covered up— not in a metaphorical way— but quite literally covered up as if the tunnels were never there. No reports were filed of the incident, as everyone involved had either completely disappeared from society, or had forgotten about the project altogether.

Unbeknownst to the populace, something occurred in that site long ago. The war for the world’s hegemony was waged, and one of the generals of the Crimson Moon was defeated here, in the very place that would become the city of Yomisaka. His body was shattered, and perhaps his soul was even more so in a sorry state, but he lived.

There were no mysteries or creatures that were born from his corpse, nor did anyone discover his ancient tomb… Until now.

The existence of the tomb was something that should not have been discoverable, but with millennia of waiting, the subconscious will of the bloodsucker eventually concluded that it was time to feed.

Slowly but surely, the city will be plunged into chaos, the world itself not remembering what happened in these nights.

On March twenty-fourth, 3:33 AM, a plane arrived in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area. The individuals inside the plane are presumed to be foreigners, backed by the evident route of the plane from St. Petersburg. There is very little known about the individuals in question, only that they may be covert operatives that have landed in Japanese territory.

Magical investigations and all forms of mystical scans have not found anything unusual, however caution is advised from the fact that mundane airspace authorities were unable to identify or even recognize the existence of the plane altogether. All records of flight control, airport towers and other such factors indicate that the plane either landed without any detection, or somehow materialized out of thin air in a remote, private airstrip somewhere in Saitama.

In conclusion, this information is to be considered by the client, as various factors, along with the anomalies within Tokyo in general pose as somewhat concerning for the stability of the client’s residence.

— Spellcaster Report

Silence pervaded the room, the only sound audible being the silent crackling of a cigar’s burning material spreading its smoke throughout the area.

“So this is the conclusion, I suppose.”

A young man stood in an old office chair, two people of questionable moral standing facing him in their own chairs, which were considerably less comfortable.

“Yeah. That’s all we got from the investigator. Said it would probably be fine to stay here for a couple months despite things being weird around here.”

Caius merely stared at the man to his right, a chubby, disheveled man who reeked of alcohol. It was obvious that was merely a courier or messenger, and was rather shaky and nervous despite his good attempt at not stuttering, evident from the fact that he was sweating bullets and would occasionally chew on his undershirt when he thought no one was looking. It was only natural, he was standing before a bloodsucker after all.

But that was all the man knew, and his colleague next to him was considerably calmer— someone that had dealt with Caius’s business before and had seen his methodology.

“So we gettin’ cash or a wire transfer?”

The taller man to Caius’s left spoke, his partner’s eyes seemingly bulging out of his eye sockets as the man spoke. The chubby one probably thought of his partner’s nonchalant attitude as being disrespectful, but Caius had worked with this individual for a considerable amount of time, so he was sure he meant no disrespect.

In response, Caius merely pulled out a small bag and placed it on his desk. The bag landed with a heavy thump, the contents obvious to the people inside the room.

It was cash: about two hundred fifty thousand yen. This amount was a part of what Caius had earned from selling much of the possessions that he had brought with him to Japan— much of which were valuable materials from the Holy Church.

The alcoholic man’s eyes bulged out even more, but his friend merely whistled with a surprised tone.

“Sheesh. Didn’t expect ya to be so generous.”

The tall one spoke, grabbing the bag as if it was a sack of potatoes.

“What you handed me was valuable intel. After all, I am going to be living in this country for the foreseeable future.”

A smile greeted the two men, causing the taller one to grimace and the rotund one to slightly tremble in his chair.

“You may leave now.”

Without a chance to breath, the taller one got up and dragged his partner by the collar, the other man fumbling slightly before adopting his usual gait and leaving the dingy office. Once the men’s footsteps were no longer audible, Caius merely looked at the report with a blank stare, thinking of his affairs in this new land.

He had set up his very own service-related business, one that would both dispense and receive information for clients as well as assisting with investigations regarding the supernatural. The ones that had just left were people he had personally requested to give him a report on the happenings of the area, something unusual for him, as he usually did things on his own.

But something told him that he would need some help getting used to the country he found himself in. But with those thoughts passing by, he would press a button on his desk, and a distant buzzing sound could be heard from his office.

“Up next: one Tsubasa Rohrbach…”

The pale, white-haired man spoke out to himself.

Tsubasa Rohrbach looked at the building in front of which she was standing.

Looking at the sign and asking around a bit, it was seemingly some sort of private eye firm. However, considering the existence of a bounded field around the building, Tsubasa was quite certain that the owner of the establishment was a magus of some sort.

After making an appointment, she was instructed to wait in a waiting area just outside the consultation office.

If she had to guess, this 'private eye' most likely dealt in the supernatural, providing services for those dwelling in the 'World of Magecraft' or perhaps even common citizens who had inadvertently got wrapped up in some sort of supernatural incident.

As Tsubasa understood it, it was a common enough business for spellcasters, though mainly in the United States, the 'backwater wild west' of the Magecraft World. Though she supposed, given how mysticism still had its place in Japan, such a business would make sense. There was even a rumour that a certain Grand-rank puppeteer had once set up a similar business in Japan.

At the very least, a business investigating the supernatural would make sense as to why the fortune-telling she had done through her magecraft had led her here.

Originally, she was going back home to Japan as part of her travel to encounter all sorts of magi. Especially one that was hard to encounter in the Clock Tower. Japan, with its own unique brand of magecraft that made use of Divine Bodies at its pinnacle, was one of them.

Plus, it had given her an excuse to visit her home country. She had been missing some taste unique to Japanese cuisine, among other things.

Of course, since there was minimal contact between the Shinto Temple—where most practitioners of Japanese Magecraft were—and the Clock Tower, setting up a meeting was difficult. Especially since her family was also not of the calibre that would be able to demand a meeting with most of the established sects of Shintoism that practice Japanese Magecraft.

Thus, she had to settle for meeting the monks of the Shinkoji Temple in Yomisaka. Who, though practitioners of Japanese Magecraft, were a minor one, as they do not even possess a Divine Body of the kami they worship, that of Inari.

Nevertheless, they did practice some form of Onmyodo and made use of kashiwade to invoke the blessings of Inari.

Her meeting with the monks of the temple had been quite fruitful in facilitating her desire for discussion. However, she ended up agreeing to do a favour for the head monk.

Apparently, a few of the people who often visited the Inari shrine at the temple had disappeared a few days ago. Their own investigation had led to an excavation project for a subway system that had since been scrapped from any reports, as well as being covered up through magecraft.

The monks knew enough that this was beyond their own capability as merely minor practitioners, especially as there had been some indication that there had been Clock Tower involvement.

Thus, they were hoping that Tsubasa would help them with the investigation, to which she agreed.

Of course, with almost no lead, she had to resort to her magecraft to create one.

In this case, by using herself as a spirit medium to be possessed by one of her angel familiars.

Ieiael. Its name meant the Right Hand of God. Under the quinance of Cancer, its ruler was the Moon, which was presided over by the Archangel Gabriel.

Governing over fortune and discovery, by invoking the name of Archangel Gabriel, who was the one who brought the news of God's plan to Mary, as well as the one who appeared before Daniel to explain his vision, Tsubasa aligned herself with 'God's revelation'. Thus, by then projecting the image of the angel possessing her over a ball on a chain, a pseudo-holy relic bearing the authority of Iaiel was created.

After that, it was a simple matter of holding the chains and hovering the ball above a map of the city before asking the question of 'Where shall I go to investigate the cover-up of Yomisaka's subway?' before the ball hovered over a particular area of the map.

Repeating the process after Tsubasa arrived at the area—using the ball as some sort of a 'dowsing rod'—led her to this building.

Tsubasa watched two men come out of the office before a buzzing sound that indicated 'next customer' could be heard.

Entering the room, she found herself face-to-face with a pale young man, seemingly a few years older than her from appearance alone.

"Good morning," she greeted the man, "You are the 'investigator', I presume? I would like to request your service in investigating the disappearance of some workers on an excavation project for Yomisaka's subway."

The vampire looked at the young woman in front of him. He suspected that forces outside of Yomisaka itself were aware of the disturbances in the subway tunnels, so this wasn't much of a surprise. Lining up with the reports of the flight that he just read, it seemed that something significant was going on in this seemingly mundane city.

"My, oh my..."

He rubbed his forehead, a headache that truly wasn't there manifesting in his mind.

"If you're after information about that incident, then I'll happily provide. Just know that you have to compensate me in some way afterwards."

Indeed, he didn't want any sort of information to come out of his mouth without any sort of benefit on his side. Having this young lady- who he suspected had some connections to the Mage's Association- know anything significant could pose a major information leak, which was exactly the opposite of what he wanted.

He had just moved into Yomisaka after all, and attracting even more of the attention of the Assocation- and possibly the Holy Church in the worst case- was undesirable.

"To start off my services, I would like to say that this information is highly confidential in nature. Not even the best of the Association or the Church were able to detect the happenings in the subway tunnels outside of Yomisaka."

He opened his drawer, pulling out a piece of snake skin that contained much of the information of the initial incident. Upon anyone viewing the skin with any kind of intent to read it, the paper would temporarily connect itself to the "layers" of a person's existence, essentially granting "uploading" the knowledge contained within the dense piece of the data storage device in mere seconds.

"To sum up the contents: it was nature interference that is far beyond what is capable for most mages of the modern era- hell, I'd say that it may not even be possible to do such a thing in these times. I suspect it to be a major mystical force at play..."

The next thing he was about to say, he would consider very carefully, thinking of his statement thoroughly in the span of milliseconds.

"With the recent disappearances, I investigated such activity along with the rest of the strange occurrences. Most of the residences of those that went missing did not have any sign of struggle or resistance..."

If the previous statement was considered very carefully, then what was to come next was something that pondered for a few seconds at the very least.

"Investigators and spellcasters have found one particular associate of the subway incident. He was one of those that were only tangentially related to the project. Turns out that he suffered from severe anemia and blood loss right after the tunnels happened."

He looked at the young woman for a moment.

"Do you understand what this indicates? If not, then I will say it clearly: this is possibly some sort of activity involving creatures like me. In other words: vampires, or in the worst case scenario: major Dead Apostle-related activity."

He opened his mouth, revealing a pair of fangs along with his teeth. If his pale skin and red eyes didn't reveal enough of what he was, then the fangs would definitely give it away.
