Katawa Shoujo ~ Disability Girls ~ (All Genders Welcome) REBOOT

The original GM went awol along with several other players during the first few days of the IC. I intend to see this roleplay through to the bitter end and hope that others will follow in this example. Let's get started.

If you don't know what Katawa Shoujo is, its a visual novel created by 4Leaf Studios, a production team made up of 4chan users from across the world. The story follows Hisao Nakai, a high school student diagnosed with Arrythmia, a rare heart condition and sent to Yamaku academy, a school for disabled students. Along the way to overcoming his condition Hisao is befriended by a group of school girls with different disabilities and (through character interactions and choices made by the player) falls in love with one of them.

Just a brief synopsis, but this basically explains what this RP will be about. Its a highschool roleplay with all the students having some form of physical disability (Yamaku academy does not accept any students with mental disabilities), where they learn to cope with their disability and live a normal life. Along the way each player will make friends, enemies and maybe even find love. This roleplay will be pretty dialogue heavy with character interaction and even internal monologue heavy with character dynamics, when I say heavy though don't be too afraid of it, that just means that the majority of the roleplay will involve that. Character limitations and restrictions are pretty free here, the only thing I won't allow are mentally disabled students or anything that might be considered too ludicrous.

Personality:
Tomo is very mature for her age, but she can be rather cute and sweet in her calm moods. A kind and caring person, she loves to help others as much as she can, but often gets a bit depressed when she needs help herself. Highly intelligent and well mannered, she can be a prefect little lady when she wants to, but more often around close friends she gets less formal. A very melodic person, since she highly values sound, her voice is sweet and clear. If you can't find her, she's probably somewhere were there is a lot of sunlight and she will probably be singing or reading. Tomo tries to push herself past her blindness, disliking her own weakness and will often get herself into a bit of trouble. But for the most part she will be able to think herself right back out of it. And she very much does not like to be pitied. In fact it sort of makes her angry.

Background:
Her western-style house is quite grand, with several maids serving the household. Her mother is a kimono fashion designer and her father runs international businesses as a big time CEO. So often Tomo was with nursemaids or tutors when she was growing. It was a very boring place, if you ask Tomo. Not allowed to touch many of the things in the house, it was lonely living there as a only child. But the garden was wonderful. Some many different kinds of flowers, and the gardeners would always tell her about them. It was her favorite place in the world.

But when Mama and Papa decided it was time for her to get a proper education and try to be more social they sent her off to a private boarding school. It wasn't much fun there at all. Many students were hard to talk to and they didn't seem to like Tomo at all for some reason. So sweet Tomo who never asked for anything, asked to be transferred to another school. A school for people like her. Where people would understand her. And so her parents did. They transfer Tomo to this new school for the disabled.

Name: Amity "Ami" Cole

Age: 17

Grade: 2nd year

Disability: Paresthesias (lack of sense of touch)

Personality: Ami is about the friendliest person you'll ever meet. Which is kind of odd, considering that she's typically a very monotone and expressionless girl. Her voice will probably be completely devoid of emotion as she's complimenting every last thing she can possibly compliment, and she probably won't be smiling when she gives you a big hug. At first glance, feeling physical sensation would just be the start, and one could guess right after meeting her that she can't feel emotion either. This is quite far from the case. It's not that Ami is emotionless, but just that with one exception only, she has a real hard time expressing herself. That exception? Puppets. Yes, that's right. Puppets.

Ami has an odd obsession with puppets, and at least one can often be found on her person at all times. Her myriad of puppets do wonders at unleashing the unbridled force of Ami's bottomless reserve of playfulness and creativity. Perhaps as compensation for when not puppeteering, anything she does with a puppet will always be bursting with emotion, for better or for worse. Puppetry is also her favorite pasttime, quite possibly because it's when her emotions can finally run wild. Even if the show isn't always a cheerful one. She's tried being more expressive without puppets before, but to no avail.

Background: Amity Cole was born with a little bit of a neural problem in her noggin. If the doctors hadn't managed to detect and repair it, she'd have lost all five of her senses. Sadly, they weren't able to operate in time to save her sense of touch, which was the first and only one to go. It wasn't just sensory impairment that she'd been diagnosed with; there was absolutely zero sensation of anything involving physical touch. She also had problems expressing herself, but it was insisted upon by professionals that she was just fine.

Growing up, Ami had quite a few things to compensate for. A lot of basic human functions required a sense of touch, so not having that made things difficult. But she put on a figurative smile and puzzled out how to get around all the obstacles in her way. When she was little, she discovered an old and worn hand puppet on the sidewalk on her way home from school one day. Ami took it home with her. That evening, Ami's parents could hear her, speaking with more emotion in mere moments than she had her entire life, albeit in a squeaky falsetto. She'd discovered a love for puppetry of all forms. Over the years, in the interest of hoping she'd get more expressive in day-to-day interactions, Ami's parents began buying her more puppets, one at a time. By the time she was 15, she'd collected 107 unique puppets. Then it was time to transfer to Yamaku academy. Of course, she took the puppets with her.

Now it's her second year here. She's made absolutely no progress whatsoever on her goal to be more expressive on her own, and she still wouldn't feel a thing if you dismembered her. But she's not upset at all. Rather, Ami's happy to be back. Now it's another year, with new students! New students, of course, means new friends.

Other Info: Unless she miscounted last time, Ami has collected a total of 162 different puppets, including but not limited to varied hand puppets, ventriloquist dummies, and marionettes.

Interested, but there's three question's I really need to be asked/clarified though (the fourth one below the quote is more out of curiosity than anything).

1. Are you putting a focus on female characters? I ask this because the title "Disability girls". I get most characters in the novel were girls, but that was because it being a romance novel and the main being a guy it was simply natural to make most of the other characters female in order to appeal to the largest audience. In this RP though I don't imagine it's going to be the same case of one male's quest to find a girlfriend though.

2. Is this RP pushing romance as a big/mandatory thing? That was basically the novel's entire focus so I'm wondering if the RP is going to push us in that direction or if it's more just the setting we're capturing and we're free to simply play through without one (or little focus on one) if we wish.

3. What level Casual? As in Low, Medium, or High Casual.

Really? I played a bit of Katawa Shoujo (Ultimately didn't like it in the end, but that was because I found the writing and characters logic of it revolved around typical 15 year old girl thinking however. [ex: Play defensive at risk = Lose a girl, No GF in the first week of school = Screw you, go fall off a building and die]. The general concept however I actually enjoyed quite a lot). Are we just talking serious mental disabilities though or anything? Like someone with high functioning aspergers, or dyslexia, ADHD, depression etc. would all be turned down even if it was say minor?

I just find it odd that a school that is specifically focused to help people with disabilities of one kind would completely leave out those of another kind.

1. No the main focus of this won't be on the female population, the title is there to inform people that this roleplay will be based on the idea of the game, but that doesn't mean I'm expecting the roleplay to roll out exactly like the novel (ie. no gf = go fall off a building) or even expecting it to be in the same timeline as the novel, we'll say it'll be a few years down the line, so there will be fresh students, but some of the staff from the novel will still be there and players can reference previous characters at their own discretion.

Anyway, what I would like to have is an even distribution between male and female characters, that being said I am also allowing, hell even encouraging, the use of "LGBT" characters.

2. Again, as the focus of the novel was romance based, that doesn't mean I'm expecting the rp to roll out like the novel. So no, I'm not expecting everyone to go to a romance route, if you want to be just friends with everyone or a player, a whore, or celibate, go for it.

3. I'm expecting the level of writing to be medium to medium-high casual.

To answer your final question, the novel and even the wiki did explicitly state no mentally disabled students, but there are exceptions. The two best examples would be Hanako and Misha. Hanako, though severely scarred from a house fire, did also suffer from psychological trauma, to the point where she has had breakdowns in the classroom. The science teacher, Mutou, even explains to Hisao that the staff was informed upon her arrival, that she is a "special case" and is treated as such. In Misha's case, while it is never explicitly stated what her disability was, it has been speculated that she suffers from ADHD, maybe even some form of Autism.

So there you have it, special cases are ok, but that doesn't mean all special cases will be accepted. If anyone were to decide to make their character with down syndrome I would immediately reject it, no questions asked.

All in all I'm just looking for dedicated players, out of the like...12 people we had in the last interest check, LovelyAnastasia, Major Ursa, myself and one other were the only people who actually kept coming back looking to see if someone posted. The only reason I'm GMing now is because this is the first time, in a long time, that I've been extremely interested in a roleplay, thats why I know this will last if everyone stays committed to it.

Age: 15

Disability: Narcolepsy and Cataplexy

Personality: Neru is typically quiet and rundown. Her habit of watching everything quietly from the sidelines has earned her a reputation of being creepy, and some whisper that she might be a witch. The truth is that, while she does have some liking for the occult and supernatural, she simply doesn't have the energy to get too involved in things on her own.

Background: Neru was diagnosed with Narcolepsy as a child and was promptly pulled out of school to be homeschooled. Unfortunately the schools in her area simply didn't have the resources to care for a special needs student such as her. As a result, Neru's already small social life became almost non-existent. As she entered her high school years her parents decided it was time for her to get back out into the world, to try and live normally. And so she went to Yamaku, where she would be able to learn in an environment that could adjust to her needs.

Other Info: Due to her disturbed sleep cycle, Neru usually stands slumped, with dark bags under her tired eyes. The amount of time she spends indoors has also left her rather pale, giving her an almost gaunt look.

Name: Ivan Blair

Age: 17

Grade: 3rd Year

Disability: Muscular Dystrophy - Particularly in the legs, uses a wheelchair to get by.

Personality: Ivan is typically a very reserved individual. Having had only transferred in this year he has figured his time here is limited, and being a last year student no one he could run into would still be looking for friends, so he keeps largely to himself. He get's good grades, and if engaged in conversation tends to be a kind and honest person, but distant. He spends his free time mainly in his room watching tv, reading a book or playing a game. But occasionally he get's fresh air by wandering about campus fields, if for nothing more than to make his muscles not completely sore and weak.

Not wanting his disability to beat him you'll occasionally catch him trying to walk with his crutch when outside on his own, but this often results in him falling and having to slowly crawl back to his wheelchair cause he was too stubborn to bring a friend to help, there being several cuts and bruises on his face, arms and legs as a result. His arms are more easily exercised with small weights since he can work them without risk of falling and hurting himself. But even then he keeps a stick on him to nudge and shift things that his arms simply can't reach or stretch out too.

He's tried getting a license for some kind of specialized motor bike, but even with proper adaptions for his feet his arms currently are not fit enough to take on the extra demand. Horses he has an easier time with and does ride occasionally, but since he's not allowed to use such a thing on campus or on most roads he's usually stuck reliant on his wheelchair and public transit.

Background: Ivan was born with Muscular Dystrophy, he however was originally able to walk but didn't learn until the age of 3 because of the extra effort it took. Even then though his body eventually gave up at the age of 10 and he's been confined to his wheelchair ever since. He spent most of his growing up in Ottawa, Canada and got by fine at a typical school. However, during his second year he annoyed the wrong crowd, getting into a 'fight' that broke both his legs and his right arm. His parent's worried as a result decided he had to be pulled out and sent to a school that better understood and accepted him, homeschooling him in the meantime so he wouldn't fail. Yamaku Academy was the only place they could find that they felt safe leaving their child at, and despite Ivan's constant refusal he was forced to leave home and go there. Having only arrived 2 weeks ago he has familiarized himself with the school area, but nothing outside it. Nor does he yet know of anywhere to keep up hobbies like horse back riding or gaming nights.

Other Info: Ivan always sit's in his wheelchair a bit low, as if he's about to slip off at any moment but oddly he never does. He simply does this so at a moments notice he can get off his wheelchair and attempt to walk for himself during the brief moments outside when no one else is around to stop him.
