The anger was still present, it was a very bitter feeling in her mouth as she and Peeta stood close to each other. Peeta offered her his coat but she refused, not caring about the cold and not wanting anymore of Peeta’s painful generosity. She still couldn’t help but lean her head against his shoulder. “Just tell me a story Peeta.”

“A story?”

“Yeah, something to take my mind off of everything.” Katniss said plainly and held her breath. Peeta thought for a few moments, not really the type to prattle about something on the spot but he knew Katniss needed to get her mind away from her sister so he decided to spin a few tales together and hopefully it would amuse her, it not cheer her up.

“Okay well there’s this girl-” He felt her lift her head and give him a look. “it’s not you.” He assured her and continued as she got comfortable, linking arms with him as she continued to use him to stay comfortable as she allowed her eyes to flutter until she only saw a sliver of the city sprawled out in front of her. “Her name is Jenella and she was the Queen of a very small island out in the middle of nowhere, and for a while everything was good but then ships came and tried to change the island’s way of life and Jenalla refused to let anything happen to her home or her people.” Peeta began to explain. The island was so grateful for the Queen’s ferocity that it lended her the elements it bore, the volcano gave her fire, the ocean gave her water, the winds gave her air and the ground gave her earth. Jenella was about to fend off the attackers but before anyone could celebrate, the people realized someone had been kidnapped.”

“Who?” She asked quietly.

“The Queen’s sister, the Princess named Kara. The invaders took the girl back to the mainland, not expecting the sheltered Queen to follow them. They would hold Kara ransom and use her to get the Queen to do whatever they wanted but the Queen had been right on the trail and was soon to catch up with the criminals. A big fight ensued and the people who knew nothing of the Queen and her people, finally understood how fearless someone could be, even if that someone was one thought to be of no threat or importance. The sisters were reunited and both shared the magic bestowed upon them as they traveled the world, leaving their home behind, hoping to save anyone else who needed it.” He turned his head, brushing his cheek against her head before he felt her stir again. “Uh Katniss?”

“Peeta?”

“Yeah?”

“That was terrible.” She said and stood up and looked to him with a straight face. “I mean, it was really terrible. I should have just asked Effie to talk to me because at least her rambling would have been funny.” Katniss said. Peeta gave her a hurt look and tried to defend himself by pointing out that he put her on the spot. She just laughed and punched him in the arm, to which he pushed her off him. “Do not ever tell that story again. I mean I think I’m even more depressed after hearing that.” She teased him with a big grin. It may have been stupid but she did appreciate the gesture. The pair were able to talk more freely as the time progressed and before they could go back inside and get some shut eye, the door opened and Katniss and Peeta turned to see Haymitch invading their alone time. She glanced to Peeta who agreed to talk to Haymitch before quickly leaving them alone, for whatever reason.

Peeta had been acting so weird, she had no idea what he was up to.

“I’m fine yeah, Peeta told me the worst story ever so I mean it put things into perspective.” She found herself laughing near the end of her statement. “I don’t like not being able to help Prim and right now I’m just done, I can’t deal with her anymore tonight.” She sighed, the anger coming back for a moment. She looked to Haymitch quizzically when he said he had he helped her and may have gotten through. “At least she’s letting someone help.” She muttered, not sure if she was glad it was Haymitch. But he had helped her and maybe Prim could benefit too. Either way Katniss didn’t want to think about Prim anymore, not when her mood had been lightened. “Let’s go in.” She sighed and moved past Haymitch to go back down. As much as she wanted to ask Haymitch if he knew what was going on with Peeta, she had a feeling he wouldn’t tell her so she just kept quiet.

When they go back to their floor, Haymitch followed her to her room. “You don’t need to worry about me, I’m fine. Thanks for...looking after her. Night.” She said, reaching out to rest a hand on his shoulder before she went into her room, the door sliding closed behind her. Katniss got ready for bed and laid down. She was sure with everything that had happened, she wouldn’t have any dreaded nightmares again. She got up and ventured into the bathroom to brush her teeth and saw a kit had been left for her scars and there also was some kind of sleeping aid which she took and headed back to bed. Before she fell asleep, she curled up and found herself feeling somewhat lonely, not for Prim or Peeta or Gale, but that her bed felt strangely empty even with her in it. Soon she was asleep, no longer contemplating why she couldn’t get as comfortable as last night.

By the time Prim came around, Gale was getting ready for bed and had finished half of the book. He looked over to see Prim. He knew by now not to take anything too personally with Prim. He was trying to read her better and it would take time. As he was reading, he could have sworn he heard her and Haymitch talking so whatever Haymitch did, Gale hoped it worked. “Oh hey…” He sat up slightly and put his book down, keeping his place with his finger. “Good night Prim.” He said and went back to his book. It wasn’t long after that Gale turned off his lights and went to bed. He hoped Prim was feeling better but he also hoped Katniss and her would be able to resolve whatever had happened between them. As he went to sleep, he thought about how good the day had been for him and how it was different for everyone he was living with. Life was really funny sometimes and he hoped they could have one day where they all had something good happen to them.

When morning came, Gale got up and got dressed in the usual training uniform.

The Capital had given them several sets of clothes for the long span of training and Gale headed out to the living room, finding that it was Effie and Peeta who had beaten him to the table. He smiled and hurried up to the table. He would do some more work with the sword today and hoped everyone else had a plan too. “Morning.” He greeted as he sat down and an Avox severed him up some poached eggs, hash browns, sausage and fruit. He began to drink some pineapple juice when he heard someone’s door open. He felt tense for a moment and dreaded any sort of morning stress. He saw it was Katniss who also had on her uniform. She smiled to them and for a moment, Gale hoped whatever happened at night could be put behind them now. “Sleep well?”’

“I guess.” She shrugged and sat down. “You?”

“Mhmm.” Gale hummed as Katniss started to eat. Gale was feeling pretty good and for the most part, he could tell Katniss was feeling better too. Then again, it could all change when Prim showed up but even Gale was uncomfortable to see such a sudden gap between the two sisters. It wasn’t normal and he didn’t know what had happened to them. He knew not to get in the middle though. It would be foolish to try and meddle, no matter how much he cared about Primrose and Katniss. As Katniss got a second helping of eggs, the other two came out and Gale sat up, watching Prim carefully. “Morning guys.” He greeted. “I hope you guys slept well.” He commented.

Katniss glanced over. "Yeah, it's going to be another long day. ” She said and went back to eating. “Is there anyone you know of who might be into archery like me?” She asked her ex-mentor as she stopped eating. Katniss was upset with Prim but Peeta's story, as dumb as it was, had a point, they were better united. Being the older sister meant being the bigger person sometimes and she was sure Prim was scared like her. Still, she wasn't sure what to say to the blond, in her mind, that was up to Prim. "Either way, I'd like to know who to look out for if they get to the bow first." She said and slowly turned her gaze to her sister. "...Can't wait to see what you can do today." She smiled slightly before returning to her food.

The boy raised a brow, interested as he hadn't been aware Prim had a breakthrough with Haymitch. "Me too." He smiled, happy to hear that Prim was starting to fight for herself as well as him and the others "You'll kick some ass."

"Language!" Effie huffed.

Katniss smirked at Gale and Prim, holding back a small laugh. "Sorry Effie." Gale said and mouthed to Prim, 'you will' as he still believed in her.

It was refreshing to finally breathe fresh air again, to be outside the walls of the penthouse where they were being kept. From the roof, the Capitol almost looked small, and the sprawling mass of lights and buildings finally had a definite ending. In a way, Haymitch felt like escape was possible, as if he could simply crawl over the edge of the railing and survive the fall to the gilded street below. There was no freedom anymore, and Haymitch had figured that out for himself years ago, but sometimes he forgot just how deeply these Games ran and how they continuously mangled the lives of everyone involved. He wasn't sure if Katniss understood that yet, even though she was being forced back into the arena for a second time. Things really were a mess, that much was evident by the anger in Katniss's voice when it came to Prim. This was what the Capitol wanted, to split them up with the hope that they would try and kill each other.

Wordlessly, the former Victor agreed to go inside and relinquished the sense of calm he felt in the cool, new spring breeze. He followed Katniss back into the elevator and took it down back to their floor. It was late, and the four of them would have to be up early for training, something that started all over again in just a slight handful of hours. Sleep was important when it came to the Games, but Haymitch knew how impossible it was for just about everyone involved. Exhausted tributes were pliant tributes, tributes who went down easy, who got out of the way and died like they were supposed to. Haymitch shook his head at himself, not wanting to let those thoughts creep into his mind so suddenly; they were nightmare fuel.

“It's what I do,” Haymitch shrugged, smirking slightly as Katniss touched his shoulder. Her hand was warm through his shirt and he wanted to pull her close, take her into his arms and not let go for a while. Instead, he told Katniss goodnight and went quietly back to his own room.

The night had faded quickly, making way for a new day and Haymitch was awoken by an Avox coming into his room. Slowly, he opened his eyes and brushed his hair from his face as the silent girl set a freshly laundered uniform down at the edge of his bed. After she left, Haymitch got out of bed and reached his hands above his head, stretching his tight and sore muscles. He wasn't in horrible shape, not anymore, but sparring with Prim without a warm up had definitely been a bad idea. He winced as he walked over to the bathroom for a shower, sure that the hot water would wake up his muscles and get him ready for the day. He was a little worried, though, unsure of what kind of mood Katniss was going to be in, and the thought of Prim not taking his advice was on his mind as well. He wanted to help the kid, but she had to help herself.

After showering and getting dressed for the day, Haymitch emerged from his room and walked out to the dining room. Katniss, Gale, Peeta and Effie were already there, and Haymitch noticed that he had come out at the same time as Prim. She looked a little timid, nervous around her sister, but she was dressed with her hair already done up in a ponytail. “Morning,” Haymith responded to Gale as he took a seat next to Katniss. An Avox got him a cup of coffee and set a plate of eggs in front of him. He began to eat when Katniss asked about other archers and Haymitch chewed slowly as he thought. “The other Victor from 7, I think,” he said, and hummed as he continued to go over the other tributes in his mind. “The new Career from 2, the girl, I think I heard Enobaria mention something about it.” He shrugged and took a long drink of black coffee, “you want to make sure the Gamemakers remember that you're the best archer out there, though.”

Working with Haymitch had really done a lot for Prim, and sparring, even though she wasn't great at it, had given her enough confidence to try and fight for her life. She knew that Katniss was angry with her, and she assumed Gale felt the same way—frustrated that she hadn't been trying—but that was going to change. Prim had woken up that morning ready to go. She had put on her uniform and put her hair up, not wanting to assume that Katniss would braid it for her, and she figured that her sister had already done enough. She had come to breakfast that morning quietly, only smiling at the greetings she got before sitting down.

The day before the blonde girl had been dreading going downstairs, but as she sat and ate her breakfast, she found that she was actually eager to get the day started. While Prim was still nervous about trying and failing, she knew that it was better than not trying at all. She wanted to take some of the pressure off of the others, and wanted to prove that she was capable of keeping herself alive without Katniss's help. She shifted slightly in her seat, trying to get more comfortable and feel less awkward, but her muscles ached from sparring; muscles she never knew she had were begging for some kind of rest.

When Katniss spoke to her, Prim was surprised and it gave her a little bit of hope that she wasn't completely hated by the older girl. “Thanks...” she smiled softly, and laughed as Gale added his own opinion, which Effie wasn't pleased about. “I'm sure you'll all do great too.” But that was a given, because Katniss, Gale and Haymitch had already proved to be very comfortable with their weapons.

The fight between the girls had started to ease, and Haymitch didn't want to spend any more time on it. He was halfway through his breakfast when he looked to Peeta, “don't forget. We need to talk tonight.” There was something going on in Peeta's head and Haymitch needed to know what it was. If there was a plan, he wanted in, especially if it meant he and the others could stay alive.

Peeta nodded, “I know. There's some things I need to finish first.”

As if Peeta hadn't been secretive enough, his words really made Haymitch think that there was something to look forward to. He could get out, Katniss, Prim and Gale could too. He hoped some of the other victors would be included in whatever Peeta had thrown together, because there were many of them that didn't deserve to die after already doing their time.

Haymitch filled her in on who might be possible competition for her bow and arrow but from the sounds of it, she wasn’t very worried. “Don’t worry, I have something special planned for when we get to show off our skills one on one.” The last time she made big waves by shooting an arrow at their feast when they began to write her off as a nobody. Katniss decided she could use some of the supplies in the area and use one of the dummies they had around for sparring and demonstrations. She could use him as target practice the way the Capital had turned on him not long ago. She knew it would be even more controversial than last year and she was more than happy to call the Capital out on all the evil things they did behind closed doors.

“Today I’m going to do a lot of practice with my bow.” In her mind, she didn’t need to do too much but she had proven herself good enough to stand up with Johanna so now she had to go back to her roots, the reason why she fought so hard in the previous Games, her archery. She glanced between Gale and Prim as she pushed her plate aside, done already. There was something going on and it was enough to interest her more than whatever was going on in Prim’s head. Katniss knew she couldn’t let Gale slide by anymore, she had to figure out what he and Prim were up to because they were looking awfully close. Even now, Katniss had Prim’s best interests at heart, even if she wasn’t sure what to say to her.

From what it looked like, everyone had something to do for training and Gale was ready to get started with his own workout. He looked to Peeta and Haymitch, also a bit curious as to what was going on between them. If it was something important though, Gale had to believe that they would be told about it too. For now, he couldn’t let that get in the way of the day’s progress. Everyone would be stepping up their game now that the first day’s jitters were out of the way. He watched Katniss excuse herself from the table to go brush her teeth and do some quick stretching before they headed down. Gale looked back to Prim and wondered what she had to show off. He was sure it would be cool to see but he also knew it might be time for each of them to focus on thier own skills for the day. Iva and Yelven were competition after all.

And yet they were friends.

Gale didn’t want to think about the future since the present was finally starting to feel good. Prim was stepping up finally, Haymitch was being less of a jerk, and he and Katniss were honing their skills. And whatever Peeta was up, Gale had to trust that he knew what he was doing and that it would help them in the long run, somehow. As he finished nibbling on a slice of whole wheat toast, Katniss came back and Gale watched her closely. She seemed content considering the events of last night. He just wanted Prim and Katniss to be best friends again but to do that, he couldn’t meddle in their affairs. He just had to have faith and make sure his sword skills would be enough to protect them both when the Games kicked off. “I think we’re about ready to go?” Gale got up and brushed some crumbs off of him. From what he could tell, the mood of the room was confident.

They all soon were ready to head down after Effie wished them good luck. Katniss was a bit excited to get to use her go-to weapon. It had felt like forever since she had picked it up even though it had surely only be two or three days. Katniss and the others made it down to the facility where most of the other competitors were. Many were focused on their own station. She flashed her group a smile before she went straight for the wall where a black bow was hanging. along with a set of arrows. She stepped into the hologram program which was surrounded by glass and began to plug in various details as to how many enemies she wanted. The lights went dark and she armed herself. An orange hologram of a combatant came running towards her and she was quick to shoot it and reload her bow as another came from behind. She spun around and shoot it down as two then ran for her.

Katniss jumped back but waited until the right moment. As soon as the two digital attackers were lined up, thanks to her new angle, she was able take them both out in the head with one shot, it slicing through both of them with ease. Looking up, she saw another orange blue firing its own arrows at her, Katniss rolled forward and when she jumped up, she had her bow armed and aimed at the enemy archer. They both fired and both dodged but she had been quicker on her draw and landed hers where she knew he would move, thus hitting him in the chest while his own attack had been dodged with her leaned back and to the left. The program then ended and she lowered her arms and turned to see many of the Tributes had been watching her perfect performance. Gale gave her a small thumbs up and she exited it. “Well done, Katniss.” Gale smiled, expecting nothing less from his friend.

“Thanks.” She said and returned the equipment where it belonged and then gave the people Haymitch had pointed out at breakfast a cold look that dared them to follow that, let alone go anywhere near a bow and arrow. Katniss spotted Haymitch and Prim among the spectators as well. She glanced to Gale and then back to Prim who had moved elsewhere and Katniss followed, planning on upping the difficulty of the hologram program later but she was curious to see what Prim had planned. Gale followed along, interested as well. They came to where there were throwing knives and the targets at varying distances. Katniss sent her younger sister some positive thoughts as some people who had watched Katniss, lingered to see what she was looking at, while many more were interested to just see what Prim could do.

As much as Gale wanted to cheer for her, he didn’t want to interrupt her concentration so he kept quiet and just watched. He bit his lower lip and heard a few careers heckling Prim and he turned around to give them a hard glare. “Just watch and see what she’ll do to you in the Arena.” He told them. Then he turned back to watch Prim, sure that after whatever happened, everyone would be afraid of Katniss and Prim. Which meant he and Haymitch would also need to step up their game and prove that their group was strong as well as tight. Gale knew this was important but he also wanted Prim to relax and pretend that no one else was around. He spotted Iva and Yelven watching their new friend too and Gale held his breath as Prim got ready to show her stuff.

Breakfast was soon over, and the group of four made their way over to the elevator, ready for another day of training. Haymitch was looking forward to seeing Katniss in action once more, and that extended to Gale as well, but the one he was most concerned about was Prim. He felt good about the progress they had made the night before, and was confident that the younger Everdeen sister was going to start trying. If she didn't, Haymitch wasn't sure what else he, or anyone else could do for her but he hoped it wouldn't come to that. His hope for the entire day was that the other tributes would start to take 12 a little more seriously, and think they had more competition than just Katniss and her killer shot with a bow and arrow.

Once they were down in the training area, Katniss had made her way over to the simulator toward the back and Haymitch followed along. He liked watching her work, and those years hunting past the fence in 12 had made her an expert at shooting, which was a rarely seen skill in the Games. Almost anyone could swing a sword or throw an ax if they tried hard enough, but not everyone had the patience or the eyes to be a hunter. That was one of the things that made Katniss so special, she was unique and one of a kind.

Standing with Gale and Prim and a modestly sized crowd of other tributes, the group watched as Katniss took out many holographic enemies in the training simulator. A year fresh off of the Games, and the added security back in 12 hadn't made her at all rusty and her movements were as fluid and sure as ever. Haymitch was proud and he gave a look around to see a few other impressed expressions on faces. Some, however, appeared to be jealous and maybe even a little worried. That was a good thing to Haymitch, and he cheered along with Gale once Katniss had completed her session.

“Get going,” he said to Prim. “I said first thing, I meant first thing.” The blonde gave him an annoyed look, but Haymitch didn't take it to heart, especially since Prim was moving toward a station that was entirely devoted to distance weapons, complete with a set of targets for practice. He followed her too, much less worried about his own training, but he was happy to see that Katniss had taken an interest in Prim. He hoped the two would be able to talk at some point, to make up and show the rest of the tributes that they really should have been running scared.

As Prim walked up to the station, she could feel people watching her and more than likely waiting for her to screw it all up. Among the curious crowd were a few loud-mouthed careers, and of course, she heard Gale's voice, him coming to her defense. It was stressful to know that he was there too, and Prim was slightly more nervous but she still wanted to try. Even if she ended up being horrible at throwing knives and had to try and find a different weapon to practice with for the next two weeks, at least she could say she had done something to help herself. It was best not to think about screwing up, though and Prim tried to think about doing well as she stepped up to the platform.

The woman running the training was olive-skinned, and wore a friendly smile that said she wanted the tributes to live. It was weirdly comforting, and Prim relaxed her shoulders before speaking up. “Will you show me?” she asked, picking up one of the knives.

Haymitch had been right, the stance wasn't much different from archery and Prim let the instructor position her as she listened to the instructions on how to throw and do it well. She was told to aim for the most vital parts of the body and a dummy that had seen better days was position directly in front of her, close enough to make out the features of a molded face but far enough away to be something of a challenge. Prim nodded as the woman stepped back and she blocked out the crowd around her as she felt the weight of the knife in her hand. Carefully, she raised her hand back and took a deep breath before winding up and letting the weapon go. The slender, sharp blade caught the hip of the target, just barely deep enough to stay embedded and Prim heard a few of the careers laughing behind her.

“You need to throw harder,” the instructor said and Prim accepted another knife to try again. She repeated the practiced stance and tried a second time where the knife hit the target somewhere in the stomach, a little deeper that time. It was a critical hit, but not lethal. After all, Haymitch had survived for quite a long time after being cut open, long enough to win the first Quarter Quell.

The next dozen throws were better and better and Prim was learning quickly with the encouraging help of the woman who ran the station. The crowd around her had began to thin out, apparently not interested in watching someone do well as opposed to falling flat on their face, but Prim didn't care about any of that. Finally, there was one last throw before she needed a break and the blonde thrust the knife through the air and toward a fresh dummy. The blade stuck deeply in its throat, down to the handle and Prim couldn't believe the wave of pride that washed over her. She was expected to this to another tribute, a living human with vulnerable and tender skin, a road map of blood-full veins beneath the surface; a person, someone's stolen child.

“Good,” the woman said, her smile still friendly. “Keep working at it.”

Prim blinked, not fully understanding what was happening until she heard someone clapping from the gallery around her. She turned to see Haymitch, the man giving her a thumbs up and he actually looked proud. Prim smiled back, owing him more than she could really say. Her shoulder was a little sore and she thought a moment of rest would be a good thing, so she stepped down to join her friends. Mostly, she was looking to Katniss, hoping her sister would be proud of her, or at least want to speak to her again. She had watched her sister before and was certainly proud of Katniss's unmatched skills.

“Hope you're planning on doing more of that,” Haymitch grinned as Prim joined them and the new Career pack sulked off, in search of someone else to torment for the time being.

Though Prim’s first attempt hadn’t been that great, Katniss was glad it was an attempt at least. Katniss was getting sick of Prim giving her a brick wall whenever she told her to take the Games seriously and to try. If Haymitch got through to her, that was great and Katniss was interested to see how Prim progressed. She wasn’t great with throwing knives but the fact that Prim actually hit the target on her first try was a good start. Most people missed it and couldn’t get the aiming right but the more times Prim began to practice, the more she began to improve, which was what the training sessions were all about, improving and showing your own worth and Katniss knew Prim had a lot to offer and that she had to stop selling herself short.

Her form wasn’t bad but it did need improving. Gale knew his wasn’t the best either but he and Prim were starting out fresh with their respective weapons so he was pretty sure Prim would be amazing by the time they were ready to fight for real. He watched her move, her mind adjusting for her body so that there could be a better connect with the blade and the target itself. He didn’t care what people thought about as most of them wandered off. In the Games, they would be sorry they didn’t pay her mind. He knew this would be the start of a new Prim with better, more tough resolve and he was very pleased to be able to witness it. If she gained enough confidence, he knew she and Katniss could make a great team together.

“Good work Prim!” He cheered when she managed to slice through the neck. It was scary but still impressive none the less. Gale could tell Katniss was pleased, based on the look she wore on her face. He knew Katniss’ feelings were hurt about what happened and how she felt shut out by Prim but he hoped this change of heart might win Katniss back. Prim was trying and he knew Katniss was proud of her for going for it. He knew he was. “That was great.” He told Prim and patted her side. It wasn’t what he wanted to do but he knew if he hugged her right now, it would likely undo all of the work Prim had just done to make a name for herself without him or anyone else guiding her along. He’d be sure to give her a big one later on.

“You’re probably sore now but once you keep repeating the motion, it’ll feel more natural.” Katniss spoke up, remembering how hard it had been for her to get used to using her bow but now she didn’t even have to think about it. “Good job.” Katniss smiled and gave Haymitch a small smile as well, grateful he got her to listen to him. She figured Prim couldn’t take her or Gale’s advice because they were close to her and that maybe she needed an outsider to push her to do things. “I’m glad you let Haymitch help you.” Though she was a bit jealous it wasn’t her, she was also glad Haymitch wanted to help Prim, since usually he didn’t like helping anyone. “See? He’s not that bad, he’s a softie underneath it all.” She grinned a little and nudged Haymitch. With that, Katniss went back to the hologram program to continue working on her own talent, glad Prim was okay.

“Come on.” He motioned for Prim to follow him so they could get a quick drink of water to refresh themselves before getting back to work. Gale looked Prim over, still very impressed with how she handled herself and how mature she was becoming. Of course it was do that or sulk and die early and he knew Prim was far too good for that. “Katniss had a hard time in the last Games when someone kept throwing knives at her, remember? I’m sure she’ll be a lot happier to have someone on her side who knows how to use them.” They worked well long distance but he knew that they could also come in handy if she was ambushed at close range. “Keep it up.” He patted her back and handed her a cup of cold water before he finished his and went back to where he could pick up a sword and train with it. He took turns using it with his dominant hand, his non-dominant hand and both, as he knew either situation would come up during the Games. He had a sparring partner as well as the official instructor giving him advice as he kept practicing swings for offense as well as defense.

Now that she had a bit more peace of mind, Katniss turned up the difficulty and went back to practicing. She spent time work on evasive moves with her weapon as well as if she lost an arrow or her bow. After an hour of intense training, she headed off to try making some arrows by hand. She used to make them often when she was poor and hadn’t money to buy anything except material. Now that she had won, she hadn’t made an arrow from scratch in a long time. She carved a few wooden arrows and made sure they were balanced properly and had the right groove in the back. She then practiced launching objects other than arrows, like rocks or pieces of wood that might help deter people from following her track. Katniss checked to see how Gale, Prim and Haymitch were doing and she was happy to see they were all buckling down like her, which gave her more hope, that they would be alright, even if they somehow got separated.

Gale approached her and helped her clean up the area where she was. “Lunch is coming up, why don’t you me and Prim head up to the room?” He offered.

“Sure.” Katniss nodded and glanced to where Prim was, figuring they needed to talk about what had happened. It was bothering her still and it didn’t feel right to leave things the way they were. “We have a bit of time before that though, I might go life some weights.” She said and headed off to go do so. Gale moved back to where Prim was and smiled, Katniss wasn’t the only feeling better now.

“Hey Prim, when lunch rolls around, you wanna head up with me and Katniss? I’m getting tired of the cafeteria scene already.” He offered to her. He had been keeping an eye on her and he was happy to note that she was turning into a formidable opponent and not some burden like she feared, all it took was effort and she was giving that now. Prim’s progress was great and he hoped she saw that, she needed to if she was going to keep improving the way that she was. "I really am proud of you." He said. "You know we all are." He said quietly, his smile still present.

Trying had been easier than Prim had first thought, and she was relieved to see that she had made progress with something new, and that she wasn't horrible with it. The others were happy for her, even Katniss and Prim couldn't help but smile and take her sister's advice. Katniss was the most important to her, the older girl's opinions, her feelings were what she took into account with just about every decision she made. She knew that things had been rocky between them over the last few days, but the blonde hoped they could put that behind them. Even with that worry fresh in her mind, Gale's encouragement made things easier. He was there for her, someone to lean on and she truly appreciated that, she just hoped she could be the same kind of support for him when things got tough.

“Good luck over there,” Prim said, smiling to Katniss before she left for a second round with the simulator. Needing a break herself, she gladly walked along with Gale to get some water. She accepted the cup from him and took a long drink, listening as Gale spoke. Prim remembered who he was talking about, that girl from 2, Clove, who had nearly killed Katniss if it hadn't been for Thresh coming to her rescue at the last minute. Prim had barely been able to breathe when she had watched it the first time, and even thinking of it made her anxious. Gale had a point, however, and Prim knew that she would be able to help her sister this time, no one would be throwing knives at Katniss.

As everyone went their separate ways, Haymitch headed off too. He wanted to get in more practice with his ax, and even thought that sparring with Chaff or maybe one of the new Careers would be a good idea. Although his attitude about these upcoming Games had mostly been relaxed so far—no freakout on the train, no defiant sulking, and no goading the other victors into a fight—Haymitch still felt that he had something to prove. He didn't want to make himself an easy target once they got into the arena, and although he was in much better shape than some of the other winners, he didn't want to take it easy. Day one had been conversation, but day two was action.

Through the rest of the morning and into the early afternoon before lunch, Haymitch got in a good work out, lifted some weights and almost had Chaff talked into a sparring match. Finally, it was time for lunch and Haymitch headed to the cafeteria with the other former mentors, the same ones he hung around year after year. Johanna and Finnick were sticking close and Haymitch had made mention earlier in the day that something was being worked. He would have to explain later, and although he didn't want to talk about anything in the cafeteria where anyone could be listening, there wasn't many more opportunities. Tributes from other districts weren't allowed to fraternize outside of training and social events, the Capitol had been very strict on that rule for as long as Haymitch could remember.

“So, what's going on?” Finnick asked in a hushed voice as he leisurely ate his Capitol-approved lunch.

The man from 4 looked suspicious and Haymitch frowned. “I don't know yet. Peeta wants to talk to me later.”

Johanna scoffed, her eyes rolling, “I don't have much faith in him. You didn't even think he was going to live last year.”

“He's a smart kid,” Haymitch insisted. “We have to trust someone on the inside. Why not him?”

Back in the training area, Prim had just finished up a morning filled with knives. She had learned quite a bit from the woman running the station and was catching on fairly quickly. As long as she didn't think that one day soon the dummy targets would become people, the blonde was able to easily focus and hit her marks. Not every throw was perfect, and there were many times that she had missed the target entirely, but she was always learning something. The different stances were the easiest to get down, and learning how hard or fast to fling her wrist was trial and error, but in a morbid sort of way, Prim could say that she was having fun.

Earlier, when she had been taking a second water break, Gale had invited her to have lunch back in the suite with him and Katniss and Prim agreed. She wanted to talk to Katniss about their fight, or at least just apologize for hurting the older girl's feelings. As it was, her feelings had been hurt as well but Prim didn't think it was appropriate to try and hash out who had been more upset between the two of them. It was easier to just apologize and move on, not cause any stress for anyone before the Games so they could all concentrate on doing well and improving.

The training area had steadily emptied out for lunch and Prim had just finished learned a few basic self defense moves when she realized that Katniss and Gale were probably already upstairs. Prim toweled off the sweat from her forehead and took the elevator up to the top floor. She was alone this time, no Careers to try and intimidate her, and Prim was in a very good mood as the doors parted and she stepped into the suite. The Avoxes had already started to set up lunch, and Prim looked around for Gale and Katniss, positive that she wasn't early.

“Hey,” she said, finally finding her sister. It was a little awkward, but being spoken to again was some encouragement. Prim walked over and wrapped her arms around Katniss, giving her a tight hug. She was sorry for the way she had acted, and for taking out her anger on the older girl. “Can this fight be over? I love you, and I hate...whatever yesterday was.” The truth was, Prim needed Katniss, she needed her sister to be on her side.

He went back to training and after a bit more time had passed, it was time for lunch. He caught Katniss’ eye and saw her watch Haymitch leave. He figured all four of them would need to have lunch together in public at some point as to not appear disjointed or anything. He’d try to make that happening tomorrow but for now, he met up with Katniss to head up to their room where privacy would be on their side. He and Katniss headed up, neither one speaking to one another. Katniss quickly headed off to her room to get freshened up and Gale decided to do the same, as well as give the girls their space.

Back in her room, she took a few calming breaths and washed her face. She headed back out into the living room, not sure why she was so nervous but she was. And it hurt. She didn’t like being at odds with her sister, even for just a few hours. It felt awful. The elevator opened to reveal Prim. “Hi…” She said and she hurried over to her sister, meeting her halfway as she pulled her into an equally tight hug. “I’m sorry too, I know you’re under a bunch of stress. I was only trying help.” She said quickly, feeling tears quickly form in her eyes.

Being away from everyone made Katniss not dread the fact that she was crying and holding her sister. Damn everyone else, Prim was pretty much all she had and all she needed. “I love you Prim, no matter what happens, I will always love you and I just want to see you do well because I know you can.” Katniss forced herself to pull back and rested her hands on the girl’s shoulders. “I refuse to lose you. I refuse to let you leave me the way mom did when dad…” Maybe that’s why Katniss took it so hard when Prim shut her out, it was because their mother did that to her and it still hurt, the rejection and silence.

“I won’t shut you out either, I promise.” She said and put her hands on either side of her face. “I am so proud of you and-” She heard someone say something and turned to see Gale giving them a big grin as he leaned against the wall under the table’s loft. “Gale, I swear to god, if you say one word!” She pointed a finger at him. He raised his hands and shook his head. He was smart enough to keep his mouth shut after letting a small ‘aw’ escape his lips. He was happy for Prim and Katniss, their team was much better united than divided. And he was friends with both girls and being in the middle was tough but he knew it wasn’t as tough as being either of them.

Gale pushed himself off the wall and pointed above him to where the table had already been laid out with food. “How about we eat?” He smiled to them and headed on up the stairs. Katniss glanced back to Prim and grabbed her hand and headed up after Gale. A huge weight had been lifted off her shoulders and Katniss was glad things between her and Prim were better. There was bound to be misunderstandings and even disagreements but if they could rise above it, they would be safe and still have each other. “I feel like we’re coming together, we’ve all got something to offer.” Gale said as he began to fill up his plate.

The Avoxes were around but they were mostly cleaning which was fine with Gale, things felt natural again and he didn’t mind having this moment to themselves.

Back down at the cafeteria, the group with Haymitch were trying to find a way to discuss Peeta’s plan without bringing much attention to themselves. Johanna and Finnick were filled in, as were Beetee and Wiress. They had all been instructed to not let Haymitch or Katniss in on the alliance or that a plan had been laid out. It was obvious that those two were already under enough scrutiny and no one wanted to risk the plan Peeta had formed, even if it was crazy, it might just work. “Just relax Haymitch, you look like you could use it. It seems like those kids of yours are improving, I’m sure you had something to do with that…” Finnick winked at the older Tribute and continued to nibble on his food.

“They do well here, who’s to say they won’t blow it in the Games?” Johanna shrugged. “Of in the Interview or Demonstration?” She smirked.

“Come on.” Finnick shook his head at her. “You’re just upset Katniss got a few good shots in.” He teased. Johanna’s face was healed, good as new but he could tell Johanna was annoying. “And her sister is stepping up her game too, you probably want to not try picking a fight with her.” He smiled.

“I plan on relaxing tonight, take a nice hot bath and maybe get a massage.” Johanna said, changing the subject. “Which might do you some good.” She said to Haymitch.

There had been a split second after entering the suite where Prim thought that Katniss still didn't want anything to do with her. The thought had been swirling in her head since the night before, that Katniss was finally choosing to distance herself from the burden she had taken on years ago. It was logical, to cut ties now before the Games even started, so that it would hurt less when Prim eventually died. Katniss had always done a good job of holding grudges, but Prim was afraid that her older sister could manage to be so cold. It was true that Katniss was no longer the same girl she had been in the previous year—the arena had changed pieces of her, and Prim hoped that Katniss hadn't adopted the predatory attitude that some of the other Victors had taken on.

All of her worries ceased as Katniss threw her arms around her, and Prim closed her eyes, hugging her sister as tight as she could. It was a relief to know that Katniss did understand why she had been acting so unlike herself, and Prim knew that she had only been trying to help. However, Katniss was abrasive and their thought patterns were very different. Prim couldn't just accept her situation and move on in the blink of an eye, she had needed time to grieve for her old life, and time to worry about dying. It was morbid and it was sad, but it was something that the blonde had needed to do. She was just happy to have Katniss back on her side, to see that she cared again, or rather, that she always would.

“I'm sorry,” Prim whispered, her voice quivering slightly. She couldn't stand it when Katniss cried, it seemed so unfair. “I won't check out like that. I'm here for you.” What their mother had done to Katniss and to her after the accident was almost unforgivable, and Prim felt terrible for shutting the dark-haired girl out the night before. That was exactly what their mother had done, every time affection was shown, she would just sit there. Prim swallowed hard, not wanting to get too emotional when she would have to go back downstairs and continue training after lunch.

When Gale made himself known, Prim laughed softly at Katniss's threat and wiped her eyes. She didn't like for anyone to see her cry, especially not Gale, but Prim knew how much it bothered Katniss. With one arm still around the older girl, she gave her sister another hug before the three of them headed into the dining room for lunch. After a busy morning of training, Prim had worked up quite the appetite and everything that had been laid out by the Avoxes looked tempting.

Taking a seat next to Katniss at the table, Prim took a bowl of fruit and one of the sandwiches from the tray in front of them. “We'll be okay,” she said, agreeing with Gale as she began to eat. It was nice to have a moment alone, just the three of them. It felt like old times, as if home weren't as far away as she thought. Prim smiled to herself and quietly wished that every day could be the same, that they could freeze time and stop the Games from coming.

“How's the simulation going?” Prim asked Katniss. She had taken a break to watch the older girl from a distance a few times that day and Katniss looked polished as ever when it came to her archery. “Are you going to try when we get back down there?” she followed up, looking to Gale. He was good with that sword, something else that Haymitch had been right about. For being a drunk, he certainly was smart sometimes.

The way that Finnick and Johanna were talking bothered Haymitch just slightly. Neither Victor seemed to be taking their dilemma very seriously, as if they had already accepted the fact that they were going to die. Haymitch himself had done the same thing a month ago, but knowing that Peeta had thought up a plan gave him new hope that the Capitol wouldn't ultimately win every time. He wanted to live, he wanted the other tributes to live and he wanted those who had already done their time to get the hell of the arena if it was possible. Peeta was a good kid, and Haymitch had faith in him even if the others seemed to be wavering.

“I'm relaxed enough,” Haymitch told Johanna, frowning. Although he did agree that she was just angry about being taken down by Katniss the day before. “I can't believe you actually want to relax around here.” That seemed like the kind of thing that the Capitol would want them to do.

“What else are we supposed to do?” Finnick asked, at a loss. “We can't train twenty-four-seven, and besides, mentors always got the best of everything. They owe us a massage, at least.”

Prim was trying to cope as best she could and Katniss just needed to remind herself that they were still sisters who loved each other. and that when things got tough they needed to stick together, not push one another away. "I've been doing it a lot I might want to take a break actually." She laughed a little as she got a spoonful of a potato salad and put it next to her two sandwich triangles. Katniss was a little tired and thought she should work on upper body, by perhaps using the monkey bars or doing some free weights. Katniss hadn't gotten around to seeing what the others like Finnick or Beetee were up to and she knew she also needed to scope out other parts of the competition. Haymitch said having allies would benefit them but she was beginning to question his logic. If allies would keep Prim and Gale and Haymitch safe though, she knew she had to consider getting a feel for who she could ignore and who she'd be foolish to overlook.

"Me?" Gale looked up. "I might." He suddenly felt a little self conscious because he wasn't as polished or as poised as Katniss. he knew Prim had been able to hold her head high even when faltering with the knives but Gale just wanted to prove he was also someone to look out for. "I might have to start off on an easier level than Katniss." He smiled. Gale was happy with how pleasant the atmosphere was around the three of them. Like Prim, he considered that this could be a scene back home. Prim had just cooked lunch and they could all sit around, acting like nothing else mattered outside their humble district. Instead, he knew they were all in danger and that this wasn't the past, but the terrifying present. They needed to take it seriously as well as remember who they were before it all happened. "I heard we only have to train in the afternoon tomorrow, so we get to sleep in." He mentioned.

"That sounds like heaven." Katniss smiled as she took a big bite out of her sandwich.

The short window for lunch flew by and soon Peeta made his own appearance as Katniss and the others were getting ready to go back down. "Primrose, Gale, I need to talk to you about something." He said. Katniss hesitated and stood by them at the foot of the stairs. "Don't worry, they'll be down shortly..." Peeta said to Katniss, finding it hard and even weird to address her so formally but he knew this was one of the few places they may be able to talk about his plan. Katniss moved between then and pulled them into a hug, her arms looping around their shoulders briefly before she headed off. Peeta watched her go and after the elevator glided downwards, he motioned for the other two to sit down in the living room. "What I have to say, Haymitch and Katniss cannot know about. They can't be hinted or given clues or anything like that." Peeta said, trying to organize his thoughts.

"What's going on?" Gale asked and sat down, grabbing Prim's hand.

Peeta remained standing and took a deep breath. "I've a plan to get you guys out. I mean, you four, Beetee, Wiress, Johanna, Finnick, Cinna, Effie, me and Portia." It was a long list and one he knew he couldn't waver on. "I know you two made friends with Iva and Yelven but I'm sorry, I can't save them too." He didn't want to list the reasons why because he hoped they were obvious but he needed them to know it had been considered. "I've gotten tipped off that the Gamemaster, Plutarch is on our side, I need to speak to him at the Ball but I haven't gotten time alone with him since our first correspondence and I've ask Johanna to make a scene to distract everyone for me." He sighed. "Beetee and Wiress' mentor is aware of what I'm planning, as are Johanna's and Finnick's. We'll try to save their Victors but this many people already is almost impossible...we'll be sending you all extra supplies like wires and rope and food...we've outlined a plan that can happen in seven days. That's what needs to happen...you all need to stay alive for seven days and we'll get you out."

His hold on Prim's hand tightened as he tried to fathom what Peeta was going on about. A plan? A plan they not only had to hide but probably debunk around Katniss and Haymitch? And the long list of people who could be saved? Gale felt like he was barely above water. He knew this was a long shot but he also knew it was better than nothing. If he could keep Prim alive, if she could keep him alive, then it would all be worth it somehow. "What will happen in seven days?" Gale asked, his eyes staying on Peeta's form. The baker looked tired and if the plan had been keeping him busy, Gale could certainly understand why. Peeta explained that the layout of the arena would have a way for an explosion to happen and that he would arrive by air to pull them all out with the force-field disabled. He said it was the only way out. He also mentioned that on the off chance the plan failed, that they would need to stick to the wilds and make their way to any of the districts, many of which were already in the process of rebelling. "So Katniss' victory sparked something..."

"Everyone is tried and fed up and this might be the one thing to push the public to act themselves." Peeta nodded. "You two need to prepare yourselves and make sure you don't tell anyone, you can't even talk to Finnick or the others in on the plan, Snow is watching us closely though Katniss and Haymitch the most, he will still have eyes and ears looking out for whispers of a plan." He said. "I know it's a lot to ask but you two aren't the same as last year, you're stronger, you have a lot to fight and live for. All I'm asking is a week, the rest of the plan should begin to take shape once you're inside the Games, I'll do whatever I can to help all four of you." He said. Gale finally tore his gaze away and looked at Prim. This was a tall order for anyone. He knew Prim was starting to stand on her own and he gave her and Peeta a nod, not needing to consider it anymore. To save the others, he would last a year in hell if need be.

"We're in." Gale said quietly, hand still holding Prim's.

Getting off the elevator, she saw people were migrating towards the training room. Katniss glanced around and saw Haymitch finally alone as his group of veterans had gone on ahead of him. Having since cleared the air with Prim, Katniss felt like her head was finally clear of any worry. But then she caught herself staring at said man and she remembered that she still had feelings for the guy. She cringed and felt like kicking herself. It seemed if she forgot about them or pretended they weren't there, that they wouldn't actually go away as she had hoped. Katniss tilted her head as she observed him putting some trash away and she realized she was rather fucked if she could watch someone she love do something so stupid and mundane. Katniss finally walked over to him, holding back the urge to just grumble and whine about her feelings which might just get her killed. "Hey." She said.

Though she was annoyed with herself, she was still in a good mood. Haymitch couldn't ruin that for her, even if he wasn't really trying. "I'm not sure if it matters to you or not but...me and Prim made up." She smiled a little which would be a nice cover in case her mind got the better of her and actually made her grin like an idiot for an entirely different reason. Katniss wasn't fond of seeing him in the same training uniform as her, it wasn't flattering for one thing but she still hated herself that he was there when he had already suffered enough. Katniss resisted the urge to hang onto him and apologize for the millionth time and that she'd gladly die if it meant he'd be alright, that he was important to her. "You know we could do a simulation sometime." She spoke up as they headed back together, her shoulder brushing against his. She wasn't sure if she did it on purpose or not though. "It might be useful to make sure we can fight without getting in each other's way." Katniss smirked a little at him. Of course she wasn't implying that either of them were careless enough to make a mistake but she thought it might help them.

And spending some one on one time regardless, might be nice.

There was a very small window that was set aside for lunch before they needed to get back downstairs and keep training. Although the moments were fleeting, Prim was glad to have time with Katniss and Gale and she was glad that she and Katniss were back on good terms. The time spent with them was easy, less stressful and Prim almost forgot that the arena loomed in the short distance, a mere two weeks away. If she lied to herself just enough, lunch in the lavish suite almost felt like home, when Katniss and Gale had come in from a morning of hunting and Prim made a meal with the fresh meat. Those had been simpler times, and Prim was torn between missing them and appreciating the fact that they could still happen. Since being drawn into the Games, the little things started to matter more and more.

As the three of them were preparing to head back down to the training facility, Peeta finally made his appearance. Prim hadn't thought much of it until she saw the look in his eyes and heard his tone of voice when mentioning that he needed to talk with her and Gale. Instantly, the blonde was concerned, wondering why Katniss hadn't been included, or even Haymitch. She hugged her sister, though as she made her leave and followed Peeta into the common area. Prim settled onto the couch next to Gale, as his hand found hers, and braced herself for whatever Peeta was going to say.

The baker began to explain, talking of a plan that seemed too good to be true, a way out for almost all of them, but especially Katniss. It was hard to hear that both Iva and Yelven wouldn't be able to be saved, but Prim understood the risks that Peeta was already taking when it came to involving so many people. Perhaps it was a little callous, but the blonde didn't want to think about that right now. Instead, she continued to listen, coming to understand the importance of secrecy. Again, Prim knew that she was the weakest link, that it was hard for her to keep things from Katniss, but this had the potential to change everything and Prim wasn't going to mess that up. If Katniss didn't suspect anything, there would be nothing to tell. Still, seven days was a long time in the games, Prim knew that from the years she had watched and how most of the deaths occurred at the beginning, in the bloodbath. There was no guarantee that nature wouldn't intervene and cause complications.

“We'll do whatever you need, Peeta,” Prim nodded, squeezing Gale's hand. There was a lot to think about, and Prim had so many questions, but there wasn't time to ask and she assumed Peeta would fill in the gaps after the ball. She trusted him.

Time was of the essence, and Prim would have loved to stay and talk, to hear more details, but the training floor was calling. “We have to go,” she said, looking from Gale to Peeta. “They don't want us late.” Tardiness was suspicious, and Prim didn't want to give Snow or anyone else a reason to be look more closely at them.

As lunch began to come to a close, Haymitch prepared to get back into training for the rest of the afternoon. He hadn't expected Katniss to come over to him, but she brought good news and Haymitch was happy to hear that she and Prim had made up. A bond like theirs was more important than any alliance that could have been created in the arena, and Haymitch was glad that both girls understood that. “Good,” he nodded, offering a half-smile, although he didn't know why Katniss thought he wouldn't care, or see that information as useless. “Hope it stays that way.” There didn't need to be any bad blood going into the arena, no pettiness, nothing that would waste energy that could be better spent on winning, and getting out alive.

“Yeah, we could do that,” Haymitch chuckled, surprised that Katniss had suggested it. He already knew that they were capable of not getting in each others way. That much had been proven months ago back home when they had first started to train, no fancy simulation necessary. Still, it would have been fun to do something with her, and Katniss's skill would only make him look better.

The rest of the afternoon was spent with Katniss at his side, and the two of them tackled the simulator on various settings. It was a good learning experience for both of them, and the more difficult the levels got, the harder Haymitch had to work to keep up with his younger counterpart. He wasn't as young and fast as he used to be, but the swing of his ax was still a force to be reckoned with, and by the end of it all, the new Careers had stopped looking at him as if he were an easy target. Haymitch was starting to see that Katniss made him a better person, that she brought out the best in him that had been buried under years of alcohol abuse and apathy. It was almost ironic, because Katniss was just as angry and withdrawn but somehow, she made him better. Realizing that was a good thing, but the timing couldn't have been worse.

“I think people are more afraid of you now,” Haymitch suggested to Katniss as he finished off a cold cup of complimentary water. He tossed the paper cup aside and began to leave the training area with the others. It was finally the end of the day, quitting time and the former Victor was sore and ready for some rest. He was looking forward to dinner without any interruptions, and the new calmness of the penthouse suite now that Prim and Katniss had made up. “Everyone might just leave you alone when the Games start,” he added, laughing at his own wishful thinking as he and Katniss caught up with Prim and Gale. Both of them had been working hard too.

Together, the four tributes from 12 caught an elevator together, one that was all to themselves. “You two made that simulator look easy,” Prim said, wanting to make conversation on the way up. If they were talking about training, it was easy not to think of Peeta plan, or how nervous she still was about it.

“That's all this one,” Haymitch replied, nodding toward Katniss. His arm brushed against her in the elevator, and their hands were just inches from one another, but the older man kept to himself. “She's good to go if the Games were tomorrow.”

Soon, the doors to the elevator parted and Haymitch was the last to enter the suite behind the others. Effie was already fluttering around, going on about what was for dinner and asking about the day they had just come in from, but Haymitch was looking for Peeta. He needed to talk to him, and he hoped that the blonde baker had come up with something for them, a saving grace.

While the news of a plan was incredible, and uplifting, Gale knew it could go wrong and that they had prepare for both the best and worst situation. He also wasn’t fond of keeping things from Katniss but he knew he couldn’t tell her or Haymitch about it because then things would really get out of hand. “Thanks.” He said to Peeta and got up with Prim. He held her hand to the elevator but then dropped it so they didn’t attract anyone when the doors opened. His mood was lifted and he knew Prim’s had to be as well. Today was turning into quite a good day, considering they were trapped inside the Capital, training to kill and not die in some brutal entertainment scheme.

For the rest of the afternoon, Gale spent time at various stations around the large room. He made some fish hooks with Mags and he even spent some time sparring with Finnick who was wielding his trusty trident while Gale had his sword. The plan was the thing taking up the most space in his mind but he had to remain focused and appear as though he didn’t have any hope, which wasn’t easy. Gale took a break to watch Katniss and Haymitch take down a few simulations together. They were an impressive pair and he hoped the more the four of them showed off, the less people would want to try taking any of them on.

Haymitch seemed to respond favorably to her idea which surprised her.

Of course Katniss couldn’t complain about some more one on one time together.

The two Victors spent most of the afternoon running through various programs thanks to the digital simulation. It gave her some relief to be able to make sure she could shoot with him, without him getting in her way when she retracted her string and that he could throw his weapon without taking off her head in the process. For the most part, they were either side by side or back to back. As they worked together without needing to speak much, since they seemed able to read what the other needed in terms of vantage and movement, Katniss could have sworn she was back in the woods with him.

She wasn’t a fool though and knew they were being watched so she couldn’t let herself fantasize too much. When it was time to go, she got a cup of water with Haymitch, feeling pretty worn out herself. “You think so?” She asked him, her tone more light than sarcastic or flippant. “I hope so.” She shrugged when he said they might even avoid her. She gave him a smile, liking the idea of others running off. It meant less people to worry about, less blood on her hands. “Maybe if you’re around, I think I work better with you.” She found herself saying as they caught up with Gale and her sister in the elevator which she was thankful for. “Hey guys.” She greeted quickly.

Prim mentioned their work with the simulator and Katniss opened her mouth to say something but Haymitch beat her to it. He gave her the credit and their arms brushed against one another. She glanced down at their hands and then back up to “I’m glad they’re not, we get to sleep in tomorrow.” Gale mentioned as the doors opened to reveal their humble home. Katniss and Gale headed out, followed by Prim and Haymitch. “I’ll see you all at dinner.” Gale waved and headed off to his room to wash his face and get changed into something that didn’t remind him of the approaching Games. Katniss waved back and headed off to her room to do the same.

Peeta caught Haymitch eyeing him and sighed, figuring it had to be now.

“Come on.” He said and motioned for Haymitch to follow him to another part of their suite, an area where no one could overhear what he was going to say. Peeta knew Haymitch might press him further for information but Peeta needed Haymitch to trust him and to let him help. Once they were alone, he looked around and then turned his attention back to the eldest in their group. “I do have a plan, Haymitch. I’m finishing it up and...you just need to last a week. I can’t say anything else.” He didn’t want to tell him anything but Haymitch needed to at least know that there was light at the end of the tunnel. “You can’t tell Katniss and you know why. I don’t even want to tell you, I can’t have you sniffing around and-” He stopped himself, knowing Haymitch didn’t need to hear about his reservations.

Meanwhile Katniss had changed and headed over to speak to Gale. She knocked on his door and he poked his head out, clearly in the middle of changing. “Gale? I need to talk to you after dinner.” She said, wanting to clear the air with him now, since she and Prim had. Gale nodded. “How about we check out the hot tub? I’m sore as hell.” She said and headed back out to the living room. Gale closed the door and finished getting ready. When he came out, he saw Prim and Katniss sitting together and looking through a picture book which had highlights from around the city like buildings and such. They were mostly poking fun at it but he could tell it was a bit much to look at a city reeking with lavish things while their district, like so many others, was barely surviving.

“It’s dinner time, would you be a darling and get Haymitch and Peeta?” Effie asked Gale as he had been the most recent arrival.

“Sure.” He nodded and turned back to go look for them, not sure if he liked the idea of those two alone.

It could risk everything.

“Hey, guys.” Gale approached them. “Dinner.” He said.

“Thanks, we’re coming.” Peeta looked to Haymitch before following Gale.

Katniss and Prim sat next to each other and were already getting served their food, a nice roast beef, green beans, mashed potatoes, gravy and whole wheat roll. It was a very comforting meal after a long day of hard work. “I have heard so many wonderful things about your progress.” Effie praised as they were all finally reunited at the table. She gave Peeta a look before she continued to prattle on. “Haymitch, Katniss it seems you two are quite the duo! And Gale, your swordsmanship is impressive considering you’re still learning and Prim, your knife skills are also impressive, I’ve heard people speak of your promise and skill. District 12 would be so proud.” She gushed.

“Thanks.” Gale smiled and started to eat.

Katniss glanced to Haymitch and gave Prim a nudge. “People are gonna watch their backs around you.” She teased.

After stepping out of the elevator, Haymitch followed Peeta to a more secluded part of the suite. All day, he had been trying to work out the baker's plan in his head, needing to know every specific part and then some if it meant making it out of the arena alive. What Peeta had to say was the exact opposite, his entire demeanor was different than Haymitch had expected, and it was almost as though he was bothering the new mentor. Even though Haymitch had focused more of his energy on Katniss in the previous Games, he had still made a point to save Peeta too, and he was being repaid with exclusion. “I can't tell her?” he asked, dumbfounded and needing clarification from the other man. Realistically, he knew that Snow would be looking at him and Katniss the most, but the plan clearly needed their input and at least Haymitch's own brand of guidance.

Keeping things from Katniss was easy, Haymitch was already doing it, but he really felt that Peeta was making a mistake with this. A plan to save people from the oppression of the Capitol needed to be talked about, and the former Victor was unsure of whether or not he could put all of his faith in a single promise of salvation if only he could last seven days. Shaking his head, the older man gave the younger a hard, annoyed look. “There are other people to consider for this thing, you know. What am I supposed to tell them?” Johanna and Finnick needed answers, and Haymitch didn't think either of them would be satisfied by Peeta's vague plan of waiting for a week without a word of what would be there for them afterward.

There was no time to discuss much of anything, as Gale had appeared around the corner to call them to dinner. Haymitch frowned, having so much more to say to Peeta, but he held his tongue before following everyone into the dining room. Dinner smelled and looked fantastic as always, but Haymitch couldn't say that he was into it, or even the conversation when he was so angry with Peeta.

“People should watch their backs anyway,” Haymitch said, and he could practically feel Peeta glaring at him. The older man didn't bother to acknowledge the new mentor, and continued to eat his dinner instead. He wasn't supposed to mention the plan, or even the existence of one, and snapping at people wasn't going to help him fly under the radar.

The mood had been light, bordering on friendly when the group had come up from training. Prim couldn't help but wonder what had gotten under Haymitch's skin so quickly, and she looked to Peeta, wondering if he had anything to do with it. She knew better than to ask, and didn't want to poke and prod at whatever was actually going on when there was enough on her mind already. Instead, she focused on eating, very hungry after a long day of practicing with the throwing knives and getting into the defensive combat moves. She hoped that she wouldn't have to use any of the hand-to-hand training, but it was a good idea to be prepared.

“Are you all looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow?” Effie asked, clearly changing the subject.

“I am,” Prim spoke up, feeling the need to indulge Effie's effort. The blonde had never been one to sleep in late, but she wasn't used to waking up so early to work out, not like Katniss who was often up before the sun had risen. Prim was looking forward to a few extra hours and a lighter day of training, but she didn't plan to take it easier when there was only so much time to get comfortable with the knives. She wanted to prove that she could take care of herself.

Effie perked, smiling. “You should try and relax tonight. You've had such a long day.”

Haymitch knew that his attitude had to change, and quick, and it was best for him to get away from the others as soon as possible. For once, Effie was right and he did need to relax. Johanna's advice rang in his ears, and a massage sounded like just the thing he needed. After a long day of working with an ax, his muscles were sore and needed some relief, and his mind needed some time alone. It was time the Capitol gave back to him, anyway.

Dinner continued on without much of a hitch and the Avoxes began to clear the plates away before bringing out dessert. All of the sugary sweets seemed unappealing, and Haymitch settled for a dish of fresh fruit, which was much better than what they got back in 12. He ate quickly before leaving the table and letting one of the other Avoxes know that he wanted a massage. Normally, those services were reserved for mentors, but the Quarter Quell was a big enough deal that every tributes was now entitled to the best of everything. He headed off to an unused room, ready for the tension to leave his body until something else annoyed him the next day.

After finishing off a chocolate truffle, Prim was also ready to leave the table. “I'm going to take a bath,” she mentioned before standing up. “You two should take Effie's advice too,” she added, smiling to Gale and Katniss. The day had been a good one, very productive, and they owed it to themselves to take the night off. Prim for one, couldn't wait to sink into the hot water and stay there until it got cold, which was something she had taken to doing after their family had moved into the Victor's Village.

Peeta knew Haymitch wouldn’t be happy with being on the outskirts of the master plan but he didn’t think he’d be so angry. Peeta wasn’t changing his stance and hoped Haymitch didn’t mess things up by trying to go over his head or shaking down other possible allies for information. Haymitch needed to calm down and trust him. Peeta didn’t know what he had done to have Haymitch question his trust or responsibility but there was no way he was going to risk everything just to make Haymitch feel in control. When they began to dine with the others, Peeta kept giving Haymitch a slight glare as he went back to his meal, hoping Haymitch would move on as it was in everyone’s best interest if the sober man just stepped back and trusted those around him.

Gale and Katniss noticed the change in mood and Gale wondered if Peeta and Haymitch could have been talking about the big plan. He tried to keep his face mute though he was worried. Peeta said he wouldn’t and couldn’t tell Haymitch or Katniss so he wondered if maybe Haymitch was pestering Peeta about it. Either way, he and Prim had to keep their minds elsewhere and hope Peeta had everything under control. “You bet.” He said in response to Effie’s comment. “I think a slow morning is something we all need.” He said, hoping to keep things light. This was a good day and he was hoping to keep the mood going into the night. Gale finished up and treated himself to a chocolate tart while Katniss skipped dessert.

She watched Haymitch get up and soon Prim took her leave. She folded her arms and watched Gale finish his tart before they got up. “Come on Gale.” She said and pulled out his chair for him. The two headed down to the living room and she told him they should get changed and have a hot soak. Katniss went to her room and found a simple black one piece suit and changed into it. Gale was already in the tub when she wandered over to him. She got in and sat next to him as they looked at the different paintings while the bubbles circulated the hot water around them. “God this feels good.” She sighed and rolled her head around, trying to work out the knots and kinks in her shoulders and neck.

“So...catnip...what did you want to talk about?” Whatever it was, was looming over his head and he needed to know. He didn’t like thinking she could be mad at him.

“You and Prim.”

“What?” Gale sat up and turned to her, resting a hand on the rim of the tub.

“I want to talk about you and Prim and how close you’ve been getting.” She sat up and turned to him as well, her face dead serious. “I started to notice something when you and her had that fight and you didn’t show your face until you patched things up. I mean...you could have come over to see me but you didn’t, not really.” She shrugged. “It made me think about how you might feel about her and when you are around, she smiles a hell of a lot more and you talk more and...I need to know how you feel about my sister. She’s my sister Gale, she’s all I have.”

“I-I know Katniss.” Gale felt his heart expand and begin to beat quite fast as he tried to collect his thoughts. “I...I do have feelings for Prim-”

“What kind of feelings?” Katniss demanded as she slammed her fist on the dial and turned off the bubbles so she could hear him better.

“Do you love her?”

“I-”

“Do you love my sister?” She demanded again, her tone low.

He swallowed and took a deep breath. It wasn’t fair that she was doing this here and now. Gale thought back to Prim and the image that came to mind was her smiling at him and he shook his head. He knew how he felt and he had no idea what to do about it. He once had feelings for Katniss but he knew those were gone. “I do...love her.” He finally said and looked at Katniss, not sure if she was going to cry or smack him or drown him or yell at him. “I love her.” He said again, mostly for himself. “She’s what I think about when I wake up and before I go to bed. She’s the kind of girl I want to spend the rest of my life with…” He smiled a little. “I’m not trying to take her away from you Katniss, I care so much about her, you know if I needed to, I would give up my life if it meant she stayed alive and well.”

Katniss suspected but to hear it was another thing.

She pushed herself away from him as she thought about the Games and her sister and everyone else and her heart sank. “Have you told her?” She asked quietly and sank into the tub so that her chin was submerged in the hot water.

“No.”

“Well you should.”

Gale wasn’t expecting that.

“Before it’s too late, you should tell her.” She muttered and closed her eyes. “And if I can’t...if I can’t take her of her, I know you’ll be able to.” Katniss brought up a hand to wipe her eyes. “But if you hurt her...if you can’t protect her and keep her happy…” She pushed herself up and turned back to Gale who was keeping still, watching her carefully. “I will make sure you pay. She is my sister, Gale. I love her. I will not hesitate to pick her side if I need to.” She glared. She loved Gale and he knew that but Prim was all she had and she would put an arrow in him if prompted. “I won’t want to but she’s all I have and if you love her...like you say you do, then you know what lengths I will go to keep her safe.” Katniss said.

“I know, Katniss.” Gale swallowed and glanced down. She leaned over and gave him a brief hug. It wouldn’t have been so informal if they weren’t in swimsuits. “Thanks.”

“Why?” She pulled back.

“For being my friend and for making me realize that I should do something.”

“You don’t have to tell her, I mean it could make the Games more complicated.” She then quickly considered but then stopped herself. “But...do what you think is right. Either way, I want both of you safe and happy and I see the way she looks at you...you make her happy..”

“I do?” He looked at her. “How...how does she look at me?”

“Like you’re the only person in the room, it’s a bit weird sometimes.” She smiled slightly and found herself wanting to just get out and take a shower since this conversation was making her uncomfortable. “Look, I’ve said what I need to. We don’t have a lot of time left so I hope you and Prim enjoy what you can…” He noticed a moment of sadness in Katniss’ eyes and felt the urge to tell her about the plan, that there was hope. He just watched her get up and pull a towel around herself. “I thought I’d be jealous or something, but if the two people I love, make each other happy, I guess it could be worse.” She smiled slightly and excused herself. Gale just sat there and tried to collect himself. She thought Prim may feel the same way? His heart was still a bit out of sorts but he got up and decided to head back to his room too.

Once there, he got undressed and took a hot shower, trying to wrap his brain about what Katniss had said. In a way, she begrudgingly gave her blessing but he hoped it wasn’t just because she thought they were all going to die. He decided to just focus on the positive and that was that he loved Prim. He was able to admit it and it made him feel an euphoric mixture of bliss and panic. As he got out and dried off his short black hair, he wondered if he should tell Prim. He never told a girl he loved her before but he knew with Prim, she could be the only one he had to say it to. He pulled on a pair of long black pants and a tight blue tank top and turned on the hologram so it showed the forest. Gale’s heart was telling him to say something but if he told her, would it hinder their performance during the Games?

It was so unfair.

Gale shook his head and decided he couldn’t die without telling Prim how he felt, even if it might be a little selfish. The swordsman had to tell her and had to hope Peeta’s plan could get them out alive. For now, he tried to settle his rampant mind with some deep breathing and focusing on the forest image. He wished he was back home, where he wasn’t forced to lie and keep things from those he cared for. He found himself missing Prim and laid back on his bed, his legs hanging off the front as he closed his eyes. He knew Katniss would do anything for Prim and he didn’t want to get in the way of that but at the same time, he couldn’t just pretend that he didn’t feel anything for the cute blond. He loved her and he knew that if he was back home, he would be able to do things better, actually take her out for a walk or a picnic but he hoped maybe the upcoming Ball could help push him to say what he needed to.

Like Gale, Katniss took a shower and got ready for bed. It wasn’t too late and they’d have the morning to sleep in so she wasn’t in such a hurry. She put on a black tee shirt and a pair of black shorts and sat in her room, feeling a bit bored and a bit lonely. She had suspected something between Gale and Prim but she had hoped she was wrong and yet she wasn’t and it broke her heart. Not because she liked Gale but because she had to think about him dying or her dying and none of them having a real life outside of the blood and dirt. She felt like crying and punching a wall because it just wasn’t fair. None of them shouldn’t be where they were. They should be home, picking flowers and talking about anything but death. Katniss rubbed her face and wondered how Gale and Prim would be if they weren’t at the Capital because of her. She got up and stormed off to Haymitch’s room.

If anyone could stop her from losing her mind, it was him. She had given Gale questionable advice and she wondered if she was a hypocrite for not taking it herself. But did she love Haymitch the way Gale loved Prim? She saw he wasn’t in his room and her face fell. She didn’t need to talk to him even, just be around him and have him assure her things would be okay. She felt so childish as she stood in the doorway. She went over to his bed and plopped down and picked up one of the books by his bedside table. Katniss flipped through it but found the words a blur as she set it down and went back to being a decorative piece of furniture. She had her hair down and brought up an anxious finger to twirl some of it around. She just wanted to talk to Haymitch and think about him, rather than think about futility or love or anything else at all.

On the other side of the suite, Prim was unaware of the conversation about her between Katniss and Gale. Instead, she was focused on getting the temperature of the water in the bathtub exactly right. The Capitol offered so many more settings on the faucet aside from the standard hot and cold that she was used to at home. Getting to choose had been a new thing, and before Katiss won the Games, their family had to make due with heating water over a fire and pouring it into a larger bucket. Bathing wasn't something that Prim had considered a luxury until they had moved to the Victor's Village, and now she couldn't get enough of it. The bath was large too, deep like a swimming pool but still inviting. After she had gotten the water just right, Prim stripped down and sunk deeply into the tub.

The hot water soaked off all of Prim's worries and fears, but one thing remained and that was Peeta's plan. She took a deep breath, the water was up to her neck and soon over her head as she tried to shake the doubt from her mind. It was difficult, as there was so much that could go wrong in seven days and the Games hadn't even started yet. Peeta could be found out, they all could, and there was no telling what the Capitol would do if they found out that a group of tributes, more than simply Katniss, were planning to rebel. The blonde surfaced once more and pushed her wet hair away from her face before settling back against the tub, shoulders resting comfortably as she closed her eyes.

Slowly, the water began to cool off and Prim decided to get out of the tub before the water went from comfortably tepid to unpleasantly chilly. After pulling the stopper on the tub, she got out and wrapped herself in a fluffy, white towel. The mirrors in the bathroom were still fogged over and Prim wiped a hand across the surface so she could see to brush the tangles from her hair, and then went through her routine to get ready for bed. She was tired from a long day, and like the others in the suite, was looking forward to a less chaotic morning and sleeping in.

Back in her room, Prim got dressed in a pair of black shorts and a sleeveless top of the same color and soft, cotton fabric. She was still warm from the bath, but when she sat down on her bed she found that she wasn't tired yet, and her legs felt restless, like she needed to walk. The real problem was her concern for Peeta's plan and the knowledge that she couldn't tell Katniss or Haymitch, or anyone else who wasn't already part of the alliance. One person she could talk to, however, was Gale, and Prim quickly left her room to see if he was still awake.

The best part of a massage was that Haymitch didn't have to talk to anyone, he could turn everything off and simply relax. Johanna had been right, he was high-strung and that came from the worry and stress of going back into the Games for a second time. He didn't like to admit it, but he was still afraid of death, and more than that, he worried about what could happen to Katniss. Peeta's vague plan had done nothing to reassure him, and he was more angry than anything over being kept in the dark because of what Snow could do. Haymitch considered himself useful now that he was sober, so he didn't understand why Peeta didn't think to include him, even if Katniss's participation was going to be an issue.

After all of the tension had been rubbed out of his muscles, Haymitch thanked the masseuse and went for a quick shower. It was the most relaxed that he had been in a long time, and after washing off the lavender-scented oil that was very unlike him, Haymitch got dressed in some black pants and a white t-shirt to sleep in before returning to his room.

When he opened the door, he expected to see a lonely bed, but Katniss had made herself comfortable. Haymitch raised an eyebrow, not understanding what she was doing, or why, but if her being there wasn't going to change anything between them, then Haymitch didn't have a problem with letting her stay. “Did you forget where your room's at?” he asked, quietly thinking that he could get used to seeing her in his bed night after night. If they could make it out of the arena, it was a possibly reality. “Or are my books just more interesting?” he asked, noticing that the volume he had been reading on knot tying was no longer placed on the bedside table.

It looked like Katniss had something on her mind, and Haymitch always wanted to know what she was thinking, or how he could point her in the right direction. Sober Haymitch was much more helpful, so much so that it annoyed him sometimes, but he wanted Katniss's life to be easy. “What's up?” he asked, giving her knee a tap with his knuckle.

Outside of Gale's door, Prim didn't hesitate like she normally would have. She knocked once and then let herself in, a little bit of Katniss's impatience showing through. “Are you awake, or do you have a minute to talk?” she asked, seeing that Gale hadn't yet climbed beneath his covers yet. “Because I keep thinking about this afternoon, about...Peeta and,” the blonde paused, unsure if they should really be talking about it. The only people around were the Avoxes, and even if they happened to hear something outside of the walls, they couldn't speak a word of it. “Do you think it could work? We could go home?” She sat down beside Gale, blue eyes focused on his reaction, his interpretation of it all.

The Capital may seem generous with the books and tools provided to all the tributes but Katniss knew they didn't care about preparing them for the Games, that they only wanted a good show as Gale had said. She knew pretending to be in love with Peeta had made for a very good show but it cost her so much, and Peeta too. She wondered what sort of tricks needed to happen this time to ensure Prim and the others got out alive. If she could make a deal with President Snow, she would but she had a feeling they were beyond that. Katniss let out a sigh as she thought about how life could have been for everyone if she had just died when she was supposed to. Peeta would still have lost his leg but he would have been safe and so would the others. Heck, maybe even Gale and Prim would be together like a normal couple, and Peeta would bake and provide for the district. And Haymitch? He would drink but he'd be safe from harm too.

But now she was back in the trap and waiting for the steel cage to snap shut.

Using her pointer to pull the other books out to get a better look at their contents, she looked up when the door opened. The first book she had looked at wasn't with the others in their organized arrangements, but was set aside on the bed. Haymitch looked rather relaxed which was a better sight than seeing him in a drunken haze. "My room isn't very interesting." She told him flatly. His was interesting because he was in it. She glanced to where his eyes were, at the book about knots on the bed. She quickly grabbed it and put it back where she found it, still not having mastered the habit of being tidy like Prim. Katniss didn't say anything in regards to his reading selection and simple stayed where she was until he kicked her out. There were things she could talk to him about like her sister, Gale, Johanna but she didn't want to. If their time was truly limited to only a few weeks, she didn't want to waste time. Words as well as actions had to be selected carefully.

"Not much." Katniss replied when he moved to sit down, tapping his knuckles against her knee, She rubbed her neck, not sure what Gale or her sister were up to. if she kept thinking about them and the loss they might suffer, she knew she'd be unable to hold a decent conversation with the guy next to her. She did want a distraction from all that and Haymitch served as one hell of a distraction. "I was thinking about home." Katniss said which wasn't an exact lie since it was partly true. "Hunting season should be starting and no one is there to help make sure families aren't going hungry." She said, dropping her hand to rest on her lap. She and Gale would often hunt animals and trade or sell them to Peacekeepers or other residents who needed the meat or pelts. Katniss moved and rested her head on his shoulder. Still, she couldn't deny that being where she was at the moment, wasn't so bad either. "But with you and Gale and Prim here, it sorta feels like home."

Despite her hard guarded exterior, Katniss Everdeen did enjoy helping others and taking care of them.

She didn't like to admit that she cared but she did care, a lot. It was a weakness she preferred not to have, nor even admit to having. She wanted to save everyone she could during the Games. She didn't like killing people like they were animals. She hunted for food, to keep other's alive but in her mind, the blood on her hands wouldn't wash off and never would because those deaths were meaningless and continued to haunt her. She didn't want anyone to die or anyone to kill. She certainly didn't want to leave her family or friends when there was so much she hadn't done with her life. All she had been doing was fighting to survive and in the end, that wouldn't be enough. She had never really lived and that's what was eating at her. "If something happens to me, please look after them." Katniss said quietly. There was little chance for her to have a happy ending, to love someone without it being a joke. "Please look after yourself too, I know I won't be there to...give you a hard time or tell you to stop drinking but please don't start, you're a much more tolerable person." She smiled a little. "And don't cut your hair either." Katniss added with a small grin as she moved an arm around his arm, just wanting to be close to him since she knew she might not get many more chances/

Katniss knew he'd upset with her somber tone but she didn't care. There was no plan to get them out alive and if there was, it was meant for Gale and Prim, hopefully Haymitch too. She didn't deserve a plan but Haymitch did. "Before any of that has to happen, I know we're gonna do great in the Games." She shrugged, trying to assure him she hadn't given up. Which she hadn't, she just was slowly accepting as he once told them, her imminent death. "With any luck we can find a cozy cave or tree and make a nice hideout together and wait it out." She smiled a bit. Of course she was assuming the four of them wouldn't get split up. But then again, if it was just her and Haymitch, she wouldn't mind going into hiding with him. If Snow wanted entertainment, she wasn't going to give it to him. Gale and Prim were proving their own skills so she had less to worry about when it came to them. "I'm tired of people killing and dying." And she didn't want to see anyone she loved hurt. That included Haymitch Abernathy. "We do make a good team." She considered, still purposely unclear if she meant the four of them or just her and Haymitch. She'd take care of him, just like she knew he'd take care of her. "They'd be stupid to try taking either of us out." She smirked.

Gale was still laying at the foot of the bed, his arms outstretched.

There were so many reasons to have a heavy heart as well as a heavy mind.

The man focused on calming himself down. He needed to slow things down if he was going to try and get any sleep. the thing was, he wasn't even tired. With the talk he had with Katniss still spinning around in his head, he wondered if he'd need to rely on other medication to help him go to sleep. One thing he was thankful for though was the late training in the afternoon. Gale knew that even if he got to bed late, he could sleep in late and things would be able to balance themselves out. The view of the trees was still on the wall parallel to him but they were no longer keeping him grounded. He began to consider going to the small work out room they had on their floor. Maybe he could do some jogging or punching or weightlifting in order to get his mind and body on the same page. The feeling of anxiety was one Gale didn't welcome very often. he was the sort of guy who enjoyed having a cool demeanor and mindset.

Yet all he could think about was what Katniss had said. Could Prim have feelings for him too? Since he was typically so straight-forward, Gale was finding it hard to figure out what sort of signs or signals Prim might have sent him. The way she looked at him? He did like the way she looked at him but was that really different? Gale wished he had paid more attention to those his age back home. He had two friends who had girlfriends but Gale didn't think much of it because he was always with Katniss or his family. He wasn't even sure if he knew the first thing about courting someone. And Prim was special, as anyone who knew her, knew. Gale wondered if he was good enough for her. He wasn't socially aware of things, obviously. And they were both about to compete in a dangerous game where he was sure they'd see bad things which might change him. Even so, Gale found himself still determined to be the sort of man Primrose could look up to and rely on. He wanted to be there for her, by her side for however long that may be.

Breaking away from muddled thoughts of romance and strained hope, he heard a soft knock and the door slid open to reveal the object of his happiness and torment. He let out a sigh of contentment and pushed himself up. "I'm awake, Prim." He told her, sure sleep wouldn't be easy to come by. "Sure." He nodded and gestured for her to join him. He'd love to talk to her for hours or just be around her. He thought back to their first night together which felt like years ago. They were looking out at the view and then later, they ended up falling asleep together. That night was something he found himself falling back to because it reminded him of how he could feel and how the Games couldn't nor shouldn't get the better of any of them. "What's on your mind?" He asked Prim who began to speak up in regards to the plan Peeta had began to outline for them. There was hope there and gale knew they couldn't forget about it. If they couldn't tell anyone, they could at least tell each other and remind them what could happen and how they could all get out alive. She took a seat and he moved an arm around her shoulders, his hand rubbing her bare arm slightly to hopefully provide some reassurance.

For a few moments, he was quiet but that didn't mean he had cold feet or reservations about the plan itself. Soon he smiled to her. "I think it could work and I'd love to go home." He told her. Home might not be the same but he knew if they could all go home together, then they would be alright. He silently added that he'd like to go home with her but once again he found himself too shy to actually say something meaningful. Should he tell her or not? If their plan worked then he could tell her when it felt right, not out of pressure to make their time together count. But then again, if the plan went horribly wrong, he didn't want to blurt out his feelings as some sort of fire or tidal wave threatened to kill them in the next ten seconds. This was a lot for him to consider and he knew why Katniss just told him to be careful because there were so many things to consider.

"I have faith in Peeta." Gale told her. "Just like I have faith in Haymitch and Katniss and you." He continued. "You and I will be home in a few weeks, we'll be able to pick flowers and bake pies and go back to the way things were." Of course if their plan did work, things would never be the same. If they broke out, wouldn't District 12 be the last place that they should go to? He was worried about his family, as well as Ms. Everdeen. "But anywhere with you, would feel like home." He told her lightly. Gale hoped he could sooth any demons running rampant through her mind but he also didn't want to feed her lies because their relationship was better than that. "It'll be tough but I know we can do it if we stick together." Gale said. "We're getting better every day and I am sure Peeta will do what's best for everyone." He said and looked to her, wishing he had better things to say. "We just need to look forward to the little things while keeping the bigger picture in mind." He said, rubbing her arm again. "we can't lose track of the present after all." He reminded her.

No matter how vague Peeta's plan was, Haymitch had the luxury of knowing that there was a safety net for them, a way out of the arena and the hell that the Capitol had created. Knowing made things easier to get through, the days seemed a little brighter, and then there was Katniss, who was convinced that she was going to die. Earlier, Haymitch hadn't thought that keeping secrets from her was going to be all that hard, but as she sat on his best, going on about district 12 starving, hunting season and then asking him to look after Prim and Gale, Haymitch was almost unable to hold his tongue. The dark-haired girl was strong, wise beyond her years from the burden of bearing adulthood too soon, but her weaknesses were showing through quickly. In the arena, that would have gotten her killed in a second, but there in the safety of his room, Haymitch didn't mind so much, even if he did wish there was something he could say to make her feel better.

“Nothing's going to happen to any of us,” he said, shaking his head. It was the best he could do, although his words came with no obvious promise. “You're going to be around Katniss, we're going to make sure of that.” Before Peeta's new plan, that had been Haymitch's goal from the beginning, to keep Katniss alive, to help her win a second time and continue the long overdue revolution. There was more hope now, something to look forward to as long as all of them made it seven days. In the arena, that was damn near the end, but many of them had done it before and Haymitch knew that Gale and Prim stood a chance at it. “Then you can go back home and do all the hunting you want. No one's gonna starve.”

With any hope, Katniss would believe him, and not think that he was only trying to placate her, tell her things she wanted to hear. “We make a great team,” he agreed, and he knew that they would put on a good show for the public. The Games were all about entertainment, and Haymitch knew how to do that, he knew how to make a Quarter Quell interesting. If the alliance (whoever else that may be) could satisfy the Capitol's need for blood branded as television, no one higher up would suspect a thing before the eventual escape, or extraction. It still bothered Haymitch that Peeta hadn't told him more about the plan.

For how dismal she came off, Haymitch could tell that Katniss still had her confidence about her, and that was something that he could keep betting on. He smiled softly and reached for the books, getting them out of the way before putting an arm around her where he held her close to his side. He hoped that he could be something of a comfort to her, or that she would appreciate the attempt, but there was more than just friendship in his touch. Now that the former Victor knew that he was going to live, his feelings for Katniss made him feel all the more guilty, and there was so much riding on the bond between 12—he was worried about breaking it.

“They are stupid,” Haymitch said, laughing to himself. Gently, his fingers trailed along her arm, still keeping her close. “Have you seen them? That new kid from 1 barely looks like he can spell his own dumb name, let alone know who's an easy target and who's not. And if they come for you,” he paused, “you're not going to have a problem.” And if she did, if Katniss hesitated, Haymitch's hands had already been stained with blood; a little more wouldn't make him any worse of a person.

The important thing was that Katniss didn't see him in a bad light, that she still thought he was halfway decent and only doing what needed to be done. In a way, they were in the same boat, both Victors, both from poverty, both with problems. Katniss had a way of reminding Haymitch of himself. Hesitating slightly, Haymitch leaned over and pressed a kiss to the side of her head, against her freshly washed hair. “You don't need to worry so much,” he said, his voice quiet as the fingers of his other hand carded through the ends of her hair.

The one thing that Prim never wanted to be was a bother, or a burden, so she was glad that Gale was awake and willing to talk to her. There were so many swirling thoughts in her head, doubts mixed with hopes and dreams of the future where the Games didn't run their lives, where they could live in peace. It was silly to think about it, to wish for so many things before the Games had even started and when so much uncertainty still lingered in front of them. Prim needed to let it out, though, to tell someone who understood, who also might be having the same thoughts. Gale knew that they would be going home, or rather, were promised a way out. Gale could talk to her when Katniss couldn't, because Snow would be looking too closely, and that cold, old man would never suspect the weakling sister and the hero's best friend.

As Gale talked, Prim leaned against him, never failing to be entertained by his unfailing optimism. The way he talked made it seem like they would be back home in three weeks time—back in their houses, hanging out late into the day, having meals together and laughing like nothing had ever happened, like they had never been taken away. It sounded too good to be true because it was and Prim knew that when they escaped, Panem would change. The Capitol wasn't going to let them leave without retaliation, and the blonde didn't know if she was prepared for that sort of thing. Peeta hadn't mentioned the consequences, or where they would even be going after getting out, but Prim had to trust that it would be taken care of, that they weren't being sent into something completely blind.

“You feel like home to me...” Prim said softly, lifting her eyes to look at Gale. If they made it out alive, maybe there was a chance for them, maybe she wasn't horrible at reading the signs. “With Katniss and Haymitch here, and Peeta, it's almost like we never left.” Or maybe it was more wishful thinking, and Prim was seeing things that weren't there. Gale had been different with her since before the Reaping, more affectionate, more caring, but she thought that was only because he felt the need to take care of her the way Katniss did.

Licking her lips, Prim continued to speak, “I want to go home. I want to see my mom again, and your family, and tease Katniss about Buttercup. I want to cook and clean up after you both when you come back from hunting. I want my life back.” She sighed softly, “it's only seven days. That's not impossible, right? We'll be together, all of us. We can do it.” Home was so close, yet teasingly far away and Prim didn't want to get caught up dreaming about what if when her head needed to be in the here and now.

It was more than just his words that gave her comfort and took her someplace far away from the deep sorrow surrounding her. It was his presence and warmth, his simple act of living that gave her control and made her feel safe and self-assured. Katniss stayed tucked against his side, finding no reason to pull away or detach herself. If she was going to lose herself, or worse, him, soon then she wanted to feel as much as she could before she’d cease to exist. Before she was nothing, she wanted to be something than just a survivor. She wanted to be the kind of person Haymitch saw her as.

His comment about her going back home and that no one would starve made her smile. She knew life was hard and it went beyond her own struggle. If her own struggle brought others a better life, then it would all be worth it. Katniss was able to believe him, she knew he didn’t lie to her, nor would he try and trick her. They were too lazy to bother with the frills and complexity of devising a lie and carrying it through to the end. Even so, she could tell in his voice that there were no signs of deception of patronization. The man then mentioned how stupid some of the others really were, making her let out a small snort.

Haymitch’s soft laugh and fingers penetrated any sort of defense she was clinging onto. With him, it was difficult to keep her distance, both emotional and now, physical. She just wanted to be close to him, was that so awful? “He definitely breaks the stereotype of a career being smart.” She agreed. Then he assured her that if someone did come after her, that she wouldn’t have to worry. Rather than react as she normally would, by insisting she didn’t need nor want help, that she wasn’t someone in need of saving, she found herself blushing a little. It was unlike herself but it didn’t make her feel embarrassed or weak in any way.

“Thanks in advance.” She smiled lightly and lifted her head to look at him, her own lips dangerously close to his. When Peeta had tried to step up and act like a hero for her, she was furious and yet with Haymitch, she didn’t mind accepting his hand in a dire situation. He leaned over and pressed his lips to the side of her face which made her feel even more warm, even though she had on shorts and a tee shirt. Katniss figured this was yet another side effect of being in love with someone who she didn’t think she’d ever have.

In this moment though, Katniss couldn’t think of him as a mentor or even a friend. Her mind kept telling her that he was someone like her, trying to not get lost along the way while they both stumbled to find some sort of light at the end of it all. The woman resumed leaning against him and brushed her cheek against his shoulder, finding herself enjoying the feel of his fingertips playing with the ends of her own hair. “You...don’t have to worry either.” Katniss said quietly. She wanted him to rely on her too, to see him as someone strong who would protect him. “I’m not going to let anyone hurt you and you’ll just have to deal with that.” Katniss smirked a little, remembering how some guys could get a bit egotistical.

Haymitch didn’t seem that petty though. Katniss sighed softly and began to wonder where their line was. She wanted him to see her as someone serious, someone who cared about him, who wasn’t some child or troublesome girl who had the charm of a dead slug. Katniss just wanted to enjoy the moment, not over-think it or ruin it. She couldn’t help but let her nails gently trail down and entwine her fingers as he hand rested atop his own. “You’re coming home with me.” She said and glanced down at their hands, a bit fearful he’d push her away now. “District 12 would miss you, believe it or not.” She said, which meant she would. “It’s not the same unless you’re there…” Which of course meant, she wasn’t herself without him.

Sure, Gale could consider the repercussions of their actions and what it could do to those they loved but he knew they weren’t in the best position to be picking at a plan. A plan with risk was better than none at all. And he knew it was much better if they focused on the positive, rather than the possibility of negatives. He wanted to give Prim and the others hope. He knew they could give themselves more than enough worry and anxiety but he wanted to keep them strong and they were when they were together. Prim had to remember her bonds with everyone and that they’d be home, wherever it was, they would be home together.

She leaned against him and he was quick to pull her closer to him. Right now he was no longer thinking about the plan or Katniss or even training. All that was on his mind was the girl beside him and how he would do anything for her and how important she was. She said that he felt like him and it caused him to smile. That was probably the best thing he had heard all night, even better than what Katniss had told him. He wanted to be Prim’s home, keep her safe, give her strength and reassurance. Gale kept his eyes on her she continued to speak, her words soaking into his soul.

Prim then agreed that they would all be home. Yes, they would. Now she was looking at him, just as he was looking at her. Before he could do anything else, she mentioned her mother and his family and that pushed him back into a moment of depression. He forced himself to not dwell on the things they wanted and the things they missed. “We’ll see them soon.” He nodded to her. “Seven days will come and go in the blink of an eye, this trip to the Capitol will be far behind us and we’ll move on and be better for it.” Somehow.

Gale was thankfully able to get his mind back into the present. The future could only be painted so bright before he couldn’t look at it anymore without feeling blinded. He reached around and pushed himself further on the bed so he could turn to look at her a little better, resting both of his hands in hers. “It doesn’t matter where any of us are,” He began to say as he tried to keep his thoughts collected. He couldn’t psych himself out now or his resolve would surely crumble. “I just want to be with…” He smiled softly and decided that if he was going to say or do anything, he had to do it now or he’d feel like a fool forever.

Before he finished, he leaned down and brushed his lips against hers once before he applied more pressure. The kiss was gentle but firm enough to hopefully show her what he kept failing to admit to with his words. His hands held onto hers, his fingertips brushing against the top of her hands, enjoying the softness of her soft skin. Gale then pulled back slightly and remembered what he was trying to say. “You.” He finished. “I just want to be with you.” Gale reiterated himself and looked into her eyes, searching for something.

He was searching for hope, acceptance, assurance, something. Gale licked his lips and hoped Katniss was right but the signs were there. That’s what it looked like to him. For some reason when it came to Primrose Everdeen, he could never be himself, as he was too caught up in trying to be everything for her. He was beginning to realize that he was good enough as he was. In the back of his mind, he was getting nervous. He had wanted to kiss her for quite some time and he was not disappointed. She was sweet and he just hoped he didn’t screw things up for them. His heart wouldn’t be able to function if she rejected him. It would just stop.

The year before, Haymitch had been completely serious when he said that Katniss had the personality of a dead slug. It wasn't until she had won the Games with Peeta, and he'd had to help get her through the Victory tour did he start to change his mind. His policy was always distance, he never got to know any of the tributes from 12 because he knew that he would never get to bring any of them home to their families, and he would remain alone in the Victor's village. Katniss had changed that in the blink of an eye, and suddenly, Haymitch was forced to know her. She was someone that couldn't be ignored, whether it was through her good deeds around the district, or her bad attitude, Haymitch constantly found himself confronted with Katniss Everdeen. At first it had annoyed him, but now, it brought him some semblance of peace and he had changed his mind about her, too—less dead slug, more grumpy cat.

Somewhere in the last year, their relationship had changed. Katniss had gone from a faceless tribute, to the symbol of rebellion, to a reluctant friend, and now Haymitch was in love with her. It was terribly out of character for him to have even made friends with her, but she was so important and those feelings he had were hard to ignore when she was so close, and clearly needed something from him. Haymitch had never been one to be there for people, but Katniss had lost so much and he didn't want to be yet another person who had disappeared on her. Even though they were going back into the games, even though seven days was a long time, Haymitch was determined to stay alive and be what Katniss needed.

“I know I don't,” he chuckled, knowing that Katniss was serious and that she would protect him. When it came to his own life, Haymitch didn't think there was much to worry about, and he was more concerned about protecting her, and the rest of the alliance. After nearly dying in his last games, Haymitch knew what he could handle and there was very little that scared him about the competition.

As she leaned against him, Haymitch couldn't help but wonder where the line was between them. A few days before, he thought he knew, and he thought Katniss had made the decision, but she was always surprising him. He didn't want to allow himself to think that she could feel the same way, that she could love him back when he was such a fuck up and had ruined himself with alcohol. It didn't matter that he was finally sober, because that had been for Katniss too and if he hadn't bothered to take Peeta's place in the Games, he would still be drunk and trying to forget the past. Subconsciously, he held her closer, although he hated that whatever their friendship had turned into made him feel slightly ashamed, as if he were taking advantage of a vulnerable situation.

“They already miss me drinking all the liquor,” he laughed, shaking his head at his own self-deprecating joke. “We'll all be back to make twelve the same as it's always been—poor and just a little boring.” He looked down at her then, fingers still twining in and out of her soft, dark hair. “But maybe you should go to bed...take advantage of that late start tomorrow.” Haymitch didn't make her move, though, and he didn't let go of her. Their lips were impossibly close again and he wanted to lean forward and close the gap. But that line was thick and shining, and although it was begging to be crossed, Haymitch couldn't make himself do that to Katniss.

It was hard to worry about the future when it couldn't be controlled, and even harder to think about the possible collapse of a plan when Gale seemed to have all of the answers. He had always been such a stark contrast to Katniss, optimistic and hungry for a brighter future while Katniss accepted what the Capitol did and had no interest in changing anything. Briefly, Prim wondered if her sister still felt the same way, if she was only it because she was forced to be, and if she would have preferred to sit idly by and focus on the problems in 12 instead of Panem as a whole. Prim wanted to change things, and Peeta's plan made that a little more possible.

Rebellion, as close as it was, could wait and Prim didn't want to think about it anymore that night. There were good things happening, progress that was being made and a short day of training to look forward to the next day, Prim knew she didn't need to worry so much. As Gale shifted around, Prim was distracted from her own thoughts by the feeling of his hands on hers. She had gotten used to it over the last few days, and the fluttering of her heart in her chest remained consistent every time he reached for her. She smiled softly and tilted her head as she listened to him speak. She didn't quite understand at first, and furrowed her brow as she waited for him to finish, but Gale had leaned in and his lips were pressed against hers in the softest, most gentle way. It felt like a dream, something she had imagined over and over on those days when it was just them out in the wilds, or those quiet times when he had walked her home after the Games had been shown that night, when they were both missing Katniss. Prim never thought that it would happen though.

When he pulled away, Prim's was blushing, smiling and beside herself as she looked into his eyes. Love was different, always presenting itself at the worst time, but the moment felt like it had lasted forever and could go on for just as long. “That's all I want,” she said softly, still smiling. Her fingers found their way between his and Prim moved closer, sitting on her knees before leaning in to kiss him. It was the same tender embrace of the lips that he had given her, and Prim hoped that he could tell how she felt, how much he meant to her and how he always would.

“Just you,” she whispered after pulling away.

Had Katniss known his reservations were in regards to him not wanting to take advantage of her or their predicament, she would have set him straight. She’d assure him that no one would or could ever take advantage of her or she’d break their arms in half. Katniss didn’t let her guard down for just anyone. Sometimes she didn’t even let it down for herself until everything built up and overflowed. It was when that happened, that she had Gale or Prim to turn to so she could let everything out and surcumb to the difficult feelings.

She nodded slightly in agreement, 12 was pretty boring and barely got by but still, it was home and she loved it. Her mother was waiting for her and Prim to come back but Katniss was sure it would just be Prim making the journey back to their dinky district. She’d be alive and that’s all Katniss needed to think about. Thankfully she had Haymitch to once again pull her back from the edge of a foggy future. He suggested she go to bed but she didn’t want to move and when she replayed his words in her head, she noticed he hadn’t necessarily told her which bed to go to sleep in.

“I’m not the sleeping in kind.” She told him though he surely knew that already. Her eyes glanced to their lips for a moment and she glanced off, not sure what she was suddenly so afraid of. It was that line perhaps. If she crossed it, it couldn’t be crossed back over. She couldn’t attempt to want something and then try and forget about it when he ultimately pushed her away. Katniss remembered what Cinna had told her, that she needed to take her feelings seriously and it would help Haymitch to the same. Katniss just had no idea what she was doing and she had to laugh at herself since she could use Haymitch’s advice on how to cross the line between them.

Still, she liked being close to the edge, since it was much cozy than being further away and maybe she’d find the courage to do something about it before one of them got killed. “I think I have...forgotten how to get to my room.” She lifted her head up from its comfortable position so she could look at him, her arm slowly uncoiling from his. “I might just have to stay here tonight.” She laughed a little, hoping it was a lame enough excuse for him to not kick her out. She got points for trying right?

Prim hadn’t smacked him or pushed him away or gotten upset so in Gale’s world, he was well over the moon. His face was stuck in a permanent smile as he looked at her, their faces still rather close to one another. Prim said that was all she wanted and he decided this was the best day he had in probably the last decade, hell, his whole life. Her fingers moved against his and she moved closer to him. For a moment, an angry Katniss appeared in his mind and he knew he shouldn’t do too much more or she might have a sixth sense and barge into his room.

Neither of them needed that sort of interruption so Gale gave a gentle reminder to be careful and not get too ahead of himself or weird either. She kissed him once more and he returned it with the same affection as the first time. He removed his left hand from her and moved it to cup the side of her face. Holding hands was fine but he just wanted to be a bit more close to her. His warm palm brushed against her cheek as he forgot about where they were and how late it was getting and that they were really prisoners, clinging to a plan constructed by a baker.

He deepened the kiss slightly, allowing his lips to briefly suck on her lower lip before he broke the kiss again. Keeping his hand where it was, he then pressed his lips to her forehead and then moved down to kiss her nose. As much as he wanted to tell her that he loved her, it didn’t feel right and he didn’t want to just dump all of his feelings on top of her and have them try to shuffle them all at the moment. He decided he’d try again but for now, they were at least on the same page. In an unspoken sort of way, they already knew the other loved them and would do anything for them.

The boy was still determined to make Prim know how special and wonderful he thought she saw. He kissed her lips again briefly before he got up from the bed and went over to the dresser where he had placed the remote for the room’s lighting. “Come on, we should get some sleep.” He said. He wasn’t tired but he could enjoy his time with her in a more comfortable position. Gale crossed back over and got in bed and patted the spot next to him. “Or at least get in bed.” He corrected himself and turned off the forest scenery and dimmed the lights, hoping he didn’t look like some creep in the process. When she did get in bed beside him, he put his arm back around her and moved into a half sitting, half laying down position as his hand toyed with the tips of her golden curls. "I sleep better with you, I've found." He admitted with a small smile. Maybe it was because his dreams couldn't hold up to the reality beside him.

Feelings didn't come easily to Haymitch, and he wasn't very good at dealing with them either. Before Katniss, he had only been in love one other time, and Haymitch hadn't realized it until it was too late. Maysilee was careless, and because of that Haymitch had watched her die, held her hand and felt the life leave her body. It didn't have to be that way with Katniss, he could have told her how he felt before anything went wrong, but there was a lot holding him back. With a plan now in motion, whatever it was, the former Victor felt guilty for wanting to be close to Katniss. He didn't want her to make any decisions based on death, to settle for him because she thought that her time was limited. There were signs there, moments between them where Haymitch thought there could have been something more, but acting on it could lead to disastrous results. Katniss was still young and although she didn't know it, she had her entire life ahead of her. Why would she want to pin herself to some old drunk when she could have anyone else?

If Katniss didn't want to leave his room, then Haymitch wasn't going to make her. As she pulled away from him and playfully mentioned forgetting where her own room was, Haymitch raised an eyebrow. That seemed like an invitation, but the older man wasn't going to take it. Had it been anyone else, had they been back home and not about to fight for their lives, things may have been different. Maybe Haymitch would have kissed her by then, maybe he would have told her how special she was, or how he wouldn't have ever wanted to stop drinking if it hadn't been for her. The timing just hadn't been right, and that was something that Haymitch had gotten quite used to in his life—things going wrong.

“Suit yourself,” Haymitch shrugged, although he was happy that she wanted to stay. He slept better when she was around, no nightmares, no restlessness and part of Haymitch thought that his company did the same thing for her. Katniss was much more easy going when it was just the two of them, but he had always attributed that to their friendship and similar personalities.

Friends didn't cuddle, though, and Katniss was the one who had wound herself around him on their first night in the Capitol.

Getting into bed next to her, Haymitch turned off the lights and pulled the covers up around himself. It would have felt more natural to reach for Katniss, but he continued to hesitate. His younger self would have laughed at him for it, but the newly responsible adult in him knew that being cautious was the best bet, toeing the line until it was okay to do otherwise. “You should try to sleep in anyway,” he said, but he knew Katniss would be up early regardless.

Everything felt so surreal to Prim, and part of her was starting to think that all of this was a pleasant dream. In the morning she would wake up, alone in her bed to find out that none of this had really happened, that Gale didn't feel anything for her but friendship. The third kiss brought her out of those thoughts, it was more firm, more deliberate this time and there was no way that it was a dream. Prim found herself smiling against Gale's lips and leaning into the warmth of his hand on her cheek. It was the perfect moment, even if they had to play the Capitol's game, nothing could ruin what had just happened.

“We probably should sleep,” she agreed, although she was far too giddy and excited to just close her eyes and drift off. After getting beneath the covers, Prim was once again wrapped comfortably in Gale's embrace, which was exactly where she wanted to be. As he played with her hair, Prim laid her head down on his chest, the position began to feel familiar, like something she could easily get used to if they continued to fall asleep together. There was hope for that future and she had to keep that in mind when it came to Gale, and going home.

Sleep was uneventful for Haymitch, and he slept through the night without a single incident of waking up in a cold sweat, or dreaming of dying in the old arena. With Katniss in his bed, his mind had been calm and in the morning, when he opened his eyes his arms were securely around her waist, her back to his chest and his face pressed against her hair. He took a deep, calming breath, his senses completely overtaken by the stubborn woman in his arms. If someone were to walk in, another Avox, Haymitch knew that it would look worse than the first time, but there was a part of him that didn't care. He was where he wanted to be, holding who he wanted.

His arm was starting to fall asleep, and Haymitch did his best to move without waking Katniss. He knew that she needed rest, and that the week that was soon to be behind them had been long and tedious. Training always was.

The extra sleep had been just what Prim needed, and she had woken fully rested and refreshed. It may have had something to do with falling asleep next to Gale, too. Just barely awake, Prim pushed her hair away from her face, her body still fitted to Gale's side. He truly did feel like home, and his presence was calming enough to make her forget that there was training to be done later, knives to work with and more defensive moves to learn. None if it really mattered at the moment, not when Prim was so happy.
