Hello, and welcome.

How does this sound to anyone?

Miasma

The year is 2731,

You're an employee for the Outertech Corporation, working in a small deep-field observation station located on the planet Miasma, in the Derantone System.

Your twenty-four month contract is drawing to a close, and already a majority of the station's inhabitants have begun the long journey back to their homes. However, due to a mandatory overtime order from Corporate Head Office, you've had to stay behind a while longer to keep the various systems running, until relieved by the next shift of colleagues.

It's no so bad; in fact, it's good credits. Sure you'll have to run things on a skeleton crew, and work your ass off with barely any sleep for a few weeks - but it'll be worth it. No one can argue with a double-time pay rate, not in these times of economic instability.

As you prepare yourself for a marathon run of pristine ergonomics, the station's internal emergency alarms are activated. The bright artificial lighting diminishes to a red glow, and a computerised voice calmly advises you to head to the cafeteria.

You and your colleagues do as you're told; emergency protocols exist in places such as these for a reason. Following the station's automated, semi-intelligent instructions saves lives - they banged this much into you back at Corporate.

As the cafeteria's doors slide open, there are screams and shouts of alarm, as you and your co-workers look upon the badly mangled body of your Shift Supervisor Eddie Rowe. The dozen stainless steel tables that you had dined on only an hour previous are slick with his blood, and his entrails are hung around the place like grim Christmas decorations.

Immediately, you file a report to Corporate, demanding judicial assistance. However, your transmission is cut short, and a textual reply takes over the screen of the station's communications station:

*** PLEASE STAY CALM. ACCIDENT HAS BEEN REPORTED TO EARTH HSE. MAINTAIN STATION OPERATIONS UNTIL INVESTIGATORS ARRIVE. ETA: 2 WEEKS ***

Knowing there is a murderer in your midst, the idea of returning to work is an unsettling one. You look at your colleagues, and they at you; everyone analysing each other, trying to work out who had the motive, and who had the strength to do that kind of butchery.

However, without the station's basic life-assisting systems maintained, you'll all stumble into difficulty soon enough. With this in mind, an agreement is struck. The body is removed to the Medical Bay, and undergoes an autopsy. Meanwhile, everyone else returns to work, albeit uneasily.

Two weeks, right? You can make it, psycho-murder or no. Just don't go anywhere alone, and as per the standard operating procedure, LOCK YOUR DOOR AT NIGHT!

Information Bank

Unknown to the Characters

What triggered the alarm?

An external breach to one of the station's oxygen exhausts was detected. CCTV footage of the area suffered an unidentified disruption. The characters will be aware of the breach, but not the cause.

Who killed the shift supervisor?

Remember, this is uknown to the characters. As far as they're concerned, the suspect is human.

Why is Outertech being dismissive of the situation?

Because they are aware of the creature's presence, and do not want the staff killing it before their "Collection" team can capture it for analysis. They also do not wish for any witnesses to survive the situation.

As the staff come to realise what's really happening, there may be a sudden communications failure with the station, as Corporate Office tries to stifle any attempt to get word out.

For the time being however, they're banking on everyone remaining calm, long enough for the "investigators" to arrive and take care of the situation. Or, for the station's A.I to act according to Containment Protocol 797.

What does the "alien" want?

I don't know. Try talking to it and see how that goes.

The station's self-managed semi-intelligent systems are programmed to exterminate foreign bodies from the site.

And as far as its concerned, everyone present in the canteen is considered contaminated and liable to liquidation. Terminally. It will attempt to murder people, subtly. Opening random air locks as people pass by them, is just one way it might do this. Another way would be to seal someone in a room, and divert CO2 from the Oxygen Management Systems into it. Any evidence of the AI's destructive behaviour will be well hidden, and it would take a dedicated software engineer to stand a chance of seeing the bigger picture. Everything will just seem like a series of real nasty freak accidents or system malfunctions, until someone connects the dots.

So who are these investigators being sent to investigate the happenings?

A black-ops mercenary team, under the direct employ of Outertech. They have orders to kill everyone in the facility, to shut down all A.I systems, and to capture the creature.

Remember, this is not known by the characters.

This sounds very interesting... are there any ships docked to this station?

I'm very interested in this! I'll probably make either a maintenance technician or a security officer. Maybe even a janitor.

Edit: If there are no firearms on the station, then what's behind the armory doors? A bunch of stun batons and some riot gear, or is it classified even for security personnel?

WELL, the stock list says Taser-Batons and riot gear, but no one has been in there for some time. ;)

Good shout, we'll be needing us some fresh radishes and gem lettuces!

I'll add a Hydroponics Bay to the station layout.

Sorry for making you type something else but how about a fusion reactor?

No, this is good. I'm still developing the RP, so this kind of input is needed. It's why I put it in the interest check, so people who were interested could help me finish it.

A power source somehow ran completely by me and off into the sunset. I'll get to it.

I'm debating with myself where this RP is actually going. I know that sounds bad, but I started this like I start most things: by typing frantically hoping it'll arrive somewhere solid all on its own.

Does this remain a human-based, sci-fi murder horror house - or, do I opt for the "scary alien in the crawl space" scenario? I've also considered the possibility of the station's semi-intelligent computer systems becoming fully intelligent, and deciding the human occupants are a threat/pest. In any case, who would control the antagonist? Or would it be NPC?

There's also an option to wipe the murder scenario completely, and go somewhere else with it.

So yeah, I'm busy imagining outcomes at the moment.

Any thoughts on what shape you'd like this to take?

Name: Fynn Simons
Age: 27
Gender: Male
Augmentations:
Electronic Impulse Relay - originally during the procedures that he under went the growth of a new spinal chord looked to be too difficult so they opted for the technological route, deploying Electric Pulse cables down his regrown spine to merge with the rest of his nervous system using synthesized stem cells, though it did work and the body was able to use it it had one side effect, which wasn't really that bad, actually it was really useful. it streamlined his nervous system making it faster and smoother increasing his rate of reaction.
Electronic Servo Joints - Now in this case it wasn't complexity that drove the doctors to give him mechanical joints it was that growing the joints was a waste of time and too expensive when machines were cheaper and could do the the job just as well, so they gave him those instead. They increased the speed at which he could move his joint but only if they are charged regularly with exercise otherwise they will only work using energy from metabolized sugars which will keep them at regular speed. This power can be depleted over time and could cause a motor burn out, knocking him unconscious.
Appearance:

Divesuit - http://www.deviantart.com/art/Primum-Mobile-Bastard-Suit-361578920

Employment Role:
Water Maintenance Specialist
Brief History:
He found himself working for Corperation after a strange route of events that befell him earlier in life, at around 20 he was hit by a transport train in a freak accident, it happened to be one of the Corporations so to avoid a public scandal they payed to have him fixed, growing him new organs and setting his bones back in place, however all this was done reluctantly because it costed a fortune to bring him back from the brink of death. After a year of recovering in a medically induced coma he was woken up by a company representative and his situation was explained and the full cost details were given to him, it'd been a year after the incident and media hype had died down so naturally the company was no longer cautious about presenting a bill for their services to him.
Times were tough and the amount of figures on the bill was enough to make a bank cry so Fynn pleaded with them for another option to pay, they offered him a hand full of different jobs most of which he was unqualified for or didn't appeal to him until he was given the opportunity to go and work on Miasma, he took with enthusiasm and went through an engineering course until he finally majored in Fluid Dynamic Engineering. Right after his graduation he was driven to the launch pad and flown off as fast as possible, the corporation not wanting the media hounding him. He wasn't going to tell them anyway, that would have destroyed his chances of going to space and he desperately wanted to.
When he arrived at Miasma it was a bustling station on a planet with beautiful scenery but he didn't get to enjoy it often, usually spending his days at the bottom of the large underground cistern, repairing the constantly leaking pipes or changing out filters, doing day to day jobs to maintain the water supply of the station. However every time he reemerged from the blackness of the underground reservoir there were a few less people, being called back to earth to be swapped with fresh employees, this kept happening until it was just him and a few others left, then the incident happened and all of a sudden being trapped at the bottom of near bottomless water filled fissure wasn't all that unsafe, especially when knowing that he was the only one with a divesuit because no one else wanted the job.

How about the corporation is actually evil?

Edit: And even if it doesn't get off the ground (hopefully it will be a success) I'd love 1x1ing it.

Well. All the ideas are good and all but eventually people in this 'skeleton crew' of yours will have to start dying off. This would of course start with npcs and any characters who would have had to leave due to personal issues and didn't know when they returned. What you have to consider is what is out there in our world right. Aliens: Isolation was recently released so quite a few people would have bought it. Some of those people might be roleplayers who are on this very site. They just finished playing Aliens and Bam, this pops up. Those players will be looking for something like Aliens but not quite like it. So, lets say we go the path of the rampant Alien.

How exactly would have gotten into the station? If it had come through an outer vent it would have caused a leak in the Station's oxygen supply and the station would have gone straight on lock down. This scenario is somewhat similar to what your original post is like. The alarm goes off because something happened so the people gather in the cafeteria. There they find the first victim of this alien. The characters and npcs can't quite tell it was the alien though so they are lead to believe it is a human. Now, lets mix it up a bit. In a fit of hysteria the characters and npcs start pointing fingers in a sort of he-said-she-said fiasco. Thus, we mix in the 'murder' portion of the idea. In an attempt to find out who the murder is, the character or npc who is a guard would try and collect evidence against a certain character.

But, then of course there would be npcs and characters with a certain hatred against another npc or character and the he-said-she-said turns into a mass hysteria of blaming just so some people can get rid of their 'enemy'. Then we start mixing in the wild AI idea. The AI knows the alien is inside the station at it must 'cleanse' itself of the foreign being. Only, everybody in the cafeteria would have been contaminated with foreign material and would then be considered foreign by the AI. So, the AI starts killing off people while this mass hysteria is going on. Yet, another person gets killed by the alien and the mass hysteria is ceased as they go on the look for a 'rogue agent' as they believe. But what they don't realize is that the AI is still out there killing people. Not in the sense of attacking robots, no that would be too cliché. The AI instead does it in a more subtle way. The occasional death because the water was too hot or a drowning while taking a swim because the AI had covered the pool(Characters and npcs wouldn't know this).

And thus, we take three plot ideas and make one. The idea is to work in as many plot elements as possible so that the characters, unknown to them of course, would have several possible pathways to go down. So, we took one question and made it into a plot based off of three smaller plots. Yet, the above plot isn't quite easy to do with a small amount of people. We would need at least three or five characters to do it properly and at least ten npcs if not more. So, let's say that the station was made to have a stock of 100 hundred humans and we are currently at a quarter of that. So that leave 25 people. We would need at least five so that would leave 20 npcs. Then, we reduce npc numbers are more people join.

That is some solid thinking right there. Firmly outside of the box I got myself stuck in.

I forgot about the Alien game. That's some accidental marketing for you.

Perhaps, to get the players more involved in the mayhem, they should be given one or two minor/murderable characters to play with, alongside their main?

I'll think on it. But anyway, thanks very much for your input, you've definitely helped things along.
