The Spirits Within
Everything began ten years ago. I still remember the chaos and confusion, as if it happened yesterday. It was the experiments of a covert government research facility that inadvertently caused the end of the world. That’s what most people called it, the end of the world. The scientists at the research facility attempted to peer into another dimension using a displacement device, but something went terribly wrong. An anti-mass spectrometer malfunctioned and caused a dimensional fracture to appear, through which myriads of monstrous creatures poured. The government tried to contain the situation by launching a nuclear warhead at the facility, but all it did was to cause further damage by initiating a quantum aftershock, which caused displacement storms to flare all around the world, allowing more of the alien creatures to invade. It was a disaster that plunged humanity into a war with a non-human force.

Before I continue, there are a few things one must know about Pandora. Everything in our world has a spirit and each spirit is connected through the Earth. Life on this planet depends on this symbiosis. There is no separation between the spiritual and material world. Souls and spirits exist in humans and animals, botany and rocks, thunder and wind, everything. The non-human invaders thrived on consuming these spirits, as it made them grow stronger. This caused the symbiosis to shatter and millions of spirits to flee their material embodiments. The spirits sought refuge in material entities whose spirits were already strong to begin with, and most of these entities were humans. Those who were chosen by the spirits to protect them became their guardians. The spirits stimulated the guardians’ bodies and minds and allowed them to exert the spirits’ inherit power, a defense mechanism imposed by the spirits within.

The war lasted for three years and took the lives of many, but humanity ultimately won. However, with the disruption of the symbiosis, the world began to wither. The weather and seasons became incoherent and chaotic, shorelines along the coasts receded, natural resources gradually vanished, and wildlife turned into lifeless husks. Today, the world is akin to something out of post-apocalyptic fiction: alien diseases wreak havoc, food and water are in short supplies, electricity is not a granted certainty, savages and cults rule the outlands with primitive weapons, and the remnants of different governments have turned into a paranoid world state. We do what we can to survive, but the chance of a full recovery is doubtful.

Characters
You portray a Guardian. All the characters are childhood friends and they are bound together by a member of their group who died many years ago, Max. He was a charismatic and energetic young man, who always led the group to adventure and mischief common to children. The unfortunate event of his death—a car accident—occurred four years prior to the incident at the research facility, when all the characters were around ten years old. When the war began, all the characters were drafted and separated, which means that they have not seen each other for at least three years at the beginning of this roleplay.

Story

What’s next?
Think about what kind of adventures Max could have dragged the rest of the group into, how he was as a person, and what kind of personal relationship he had with your character. Max’s mother is still alive, though her husband died in the car crash, what kind of relationship does our characters have with her? It seems logical that our characters cared for her after her son’s death, like an aunt perhaps. We have to write a shared memory of Max, so these things are important.

I'm interested! It seems like a smart, well-rounded concept. Just a quick question, how would the powers manifest themselves? Is it fireball level, or more subtle stuff like enhanced agility?

Well, the powers are essentially spirits within a person's body that temporarily leave said body to perform an action. So, if one has a spirit of a wind, it could manifest as a gust of air shooting out from said body. Therefore, depending on the spirit's concept, the powers will be either subtle or concrete.

I hope we can get a few people together as well. We don't need all that many, three or four in addition to myself. I'd rather have a group of devoted players in contrast to an army of drop-outs. And we got another interest, which is nice! I figure things will move a bit slow, as people still seem to flock to roleplays that have the word Zombie in it.

This actually interests me quite a lot, having some ideas already. Just a question, what kind of post frequency are you hoping for as well as length per post? While this is advanced, there's still a great margin of different expectations.

Edit: Occurred to me, level of technology? You mentioned somethings that sounded highly advanced but after the war what is left and available for ordinary people? Is scavenging for leftover parts and such common?

Once or twice a week for frequency, but in the end, we'll have to simply feel the flow. If things are progressing well, I don't want to disrupt it with post-frequency limitations. As for length, I'm not in the habit of writing extensive posts, so I won't ask that of you. Focus on developing your character and wordsmithing.

I'll be posting specifics regarding the level of technology in the OOC, but you already have a good idea of what it'll be like: a culture of scavenging.

I would be interested in this one as well, quick question about permissible character backgrounds. Are people allowed to be arms of the world government you mentioned or would that risk breaking future plots? I'm not talking ministers or anything really senior. I'm thinking police, army, civil servants, that kind of thing.

Wonderful with such interest, wow.

Edge: This was tough to answer. Yes, you are allowed to, but I don't recommend it. I've designed the World State to be unsympathetic and pseudo-deliberately cruel. If you go in with the angle of "it's a job in a jobless world," then you can make it work, but your character would have to endure some nasty shit in this job. Civil Protection, which is their primary police force, enjoy to beat people up for no reason and raid people's homes for the sake of raiding someone's home.

I'll keep an eye on this.

By any chance, would your concept of spirits and guardians inspired from the Persona video game series? As it quite reminds me of it, and would make the entire idea very easy to grasp.

I've never played Persona before, I've only heard the name. However, from what I could read on Wikipedia, the idea seems similar. You could also compare it to an action card game such as Magic: the Gathering. The spirits are your cards.

I'd be interested in this, if you need any more players.
I also have a question about the spirits we're, merging, for lack of a better word, with? How abstract of a concept can we use? Specifically, ideals or virtues.

You may have already written this down with neon lights (I can be just that dense sometimes), but I just wanted to clarify something about the time line so I don't mess anything up.

Okay so, Max died around the time the characters were around 10 years old. This occurred 4 years prior to the research facility incident, so the characters were around 14 years old when that happened. The monologue states that this research facility incident happened 10 years ago. Assuming this is the present time, the characters would have to be around 24 years old.

Now, the question I really wanted to ask was: (Around) How old were the characters when the 3 year war started? Was this war a recent occurrence (war just ended) or have some years passed since it ended? Am I blind and not seeing the part where you already wrote down the answers to my question(s)?

How it looks in JJ's head:
Character Born |----[Max dies: ~10 years old]----[Lab accident: ~14 years old]------[*3 year war begins: ~14 < ~? years old]------| Monologue/Present time? (~24 years old)
*Would humanity be desperate enough to draft anyone younger than 18 to fight the (3 year) war?*

While Animism implies the existence of spirits associated with abstract concepts and even inanimate objects, I want our spirits to maintain some form of practical use. There are certainly some abstract concepts that can have a practical application in a combat situation, for example, sadness. If you were to send the spirit of sadness to attack another person, they would be forced into that emotion, which in turn would make them less effective in combat. I'm currently working on a few concrete parameters for combat in order to eliminate ambiguity regarding this topic. Good question, though!

Your train of logic is excellent, so don't think that you're insane! It's my train of though that is messy. I've written a timeline reference, in which I've adjusted the dates a bit, for the OOC in order to clear this topic up. It's going to look like this:

1976-7: Player characters are born.
1989: Max dies in the car accident.
1995: Incident at covert research facility.
1998: End of war.
1999: Present time.

This places the age of all characters in their 21s-23s, which means that they were around 18 years old and younger when they were drafted. Yes, humanity was that desperate.

The OOC will be created soon, today or tomorrow depending on how fast I work on it.

It seems you've already garnered quite a bit of interest for this roleplay, though I didn't see a strict inclination for size so I wanted to express my willingness to write. Not sure how privy you are of Quantic Dream's: Beyond Two Souls but the semblance this story shares with that game is intriguingly uncanny and being that I thoroughly enjoyed the game's story, I am reasonably excited to delve into the verse you've constructed here. Consider me a faithful participant.
