Out of curiosity, what was the part you were going to have him say about Crow? Would it be that his name came up at the tavern or the food thing? Crow is more reactive than proactive when he defends himself, since he would be worried about coming off like he's trying to hide something if he didn't let Gavin share everything first. He would be likely to take the route of lying his way out of whatever accusation Gavin comes up with instead of avoiding it
