Technically, it can be associated with Earth, because they pose as physical objects, and therefore can cast a shadow in the presence of light.
Water could also be associated with Darkness, for the deeper the depth, the less light there is.

@Crimson Raven My character utilizes illusionary magic. I said it was air-based, though, technically, it wouldn't fit any element. I say mine would be using the air to trick someone's mind. You can say one of the four major elements effects whether it is light or dark. Light itself acts like a particle and darkness is simply the lack of light. Therefore, you can say light is something like fire and dark is a lack of it. That's my suggestion.

@Zmerr I suggested air for Illusions because the density of air can bend light, thus creating false images. Fire would also work as heat causes the air to shimmer and can be use to create illusions

@Milowan No I totally agree there. I went air because I can totally see how that works for illusions. I was suggesting to @OtomostheCrazy that fire could be used for light and dark magic. Though, after your explanation here, I think air could fit it pretty well too.

@Cuccoruler the thing there is that they don't have tangible form, air is gas, water is liquid, earth is solid and fire is plasma, but what about light and dark?

Honestly, Earth seems to be the best candidate. It's the only element out of the four that can produce an actual shadow, and depending on the placement and time of day, the shadow can grow and/or shrink

well darkness is an absence, which is why I figured moving the particles in air to create shadows would be the most accurate
