The Greed of Dwarves

Chapter I

A gentle wind swept through the lands of the Blackbeards as caravans and carriages slowly made their way towards the mountains. The road was wide and well-kept, for the dwarves were crafty folk and take great pride in their exceptional infrastructure. On the mountaintops, snow could be seen glistening and dressing the peaks in a beautiful curtain. Truly, nature was as astounding and beautiful as ever on this chilly but clear winter's morning. But the travellers on the road didn't come to see the wildlife. In the distance, the mountains parted and upon their walls were statues of such size one wondered how many hundreds of years it would take anyone to carve such magnificence out of stone.
Great dwarven heads, clad in helmets and with great big beards that entwined with the mountainwalls decorated the sides of the mountains. And in the middle, a massive gate carved out of the very mountain itself stood, declaring it's grandeur to any and all a traveller to gaze upon it. Not only was it a beauty and feat in craftsmanship and stonemasonry, but also showed off the military might of the dwarves, for countless murder-holes and arrow-slots adorned the walls and even the mountains on either side. Just as much as this great city of dwarvenkind was a welcoming sight and comforting to behold to friends was it able to strike fear into any enemy and dishearten any army who would dare challange the might of Dulrum.

On both sides of the road, mighty pine trees reached far into the sky, clad in powdered snow and given light by the rising sun. This day was a day of days, the people were saying all around. From all over the continent, man, dwarf and elf alike had travelled to attend the grand coronation of Prince Durm II Blackbeard, now to become King Durm II Blackbeard. Not only was the coronation in combination with the funeral and memorial of the late King Dulrum IV Blackbeard, but it was also a grand feast unlike any in recent history. All the nations and races of the continent had been invited, except for the mortal enemies of all such as the brutish Ogres, the savage Goblins and the rather reclusive Orcs. Although it would be unfair to call the Orcs 'mortal enemies of all', they are just as absent from the feast and coronation. Also worth mentioning is that not all the nations invited are on friendly terms with each other, although they are all rather good friends with the dwarves of Dulrum. As such, the soon-to-be King has already seen to it that all embassies and hearth-homes that are to host the representatives of each nation be well protected and accomodated. No incident may plague this feast. No rivalry shall poison the festivities. At least for this week, rivals shall have to put their dislike for one-another aside.
Even the elves of Aeglos have been invited, and as such one of the greatest and most well-armed convoys headed to the capital this day is the Woodland King's own escort. But enough of the Elf-King, for as much as he is an important figure in this world his part to play in this tale is rather minor...

-

Hours later, Lucía stands amid the markets and carnivals of Dulrum's main town squares. She had never seen this many people before. She didn't even know there were this many people in the entire world put together. Truly, this is a magnificence to be alive to behold. All around her, merchants and entertainers of every race, culture and nationality are either trying to show her something awestriking or attempting to sell her their wares.

Gorim had seen many feasts and carnivals and the like in his days, especially being a noble among the dwarves of Dulrum, but nothing had he ever imagined would be quite like this. Everywhere he saw opportunities, a chance to show his worth or test his luck among gamblers and game-hosts. Resisting the temptation, he gazed from his current locale around the grand square. He had been here many times, and found the black stone familiar always. But today was different. The massive pillars that held up the mighty roof above their heads were clad in banners of different colors, flags of grandeur and splendor were hoised all around him from different tents, huts or carved houses. Mighty torches, braziers and flares roared around them, either on the ground, on the pillars or on the very livingquarters that seemed to go on endlessly through the halls and walls around them. It was as bright as day, despite the gloom of the shady parts where light rarely hits. The streets were many and mazelike, but Gorim could find his way through them easily. He recognized his own banner, the banner of house Dace, on one of the pillars. He never doubted that his family would take the opportunity to show their importance and privilege.

Yet not everyone that made their way through the crowd were pleasure-seekers or fortune-finders. Not all looked upon the massive crowds with glee and wonder. Phae'Ox had a mission, he knew that now. In his dream, the light had called to him and told him that the time had come to take up arms once again. Although he did not know why, his path eventually led him to here, this very day, of the grand coronation of Dulrum's next King. The towering Lares made his way through the crowd with his clunky armor on and massive sword sheathed. Determined but slow, he walked the streets surrounding the square and eventually through the square itself. People around him gave him odd glances, but none the less showed him respect and ducked out of the way when he came walking, slowly. None of them would be able to budge him anyway if they tried.
The City Guard were many and vigilant this day, and many of them had taken an extra eye to the big knight until they realized that he was a Lares of a Knightly Order. Few had ever heard of a Lares Knight that was not one of honor, respect and relative ... Harmony. They left him to his business, seeing as there were no enemies for the Knight to exact retribution upon.

In an opposite fashion of the Knight, another was rather unnoticed at first but later on grew to be more carefully watched by the few City Guardsmen who had actually seen him. The fighter, Jax'Ildan, of half-elf half-human descent was walking the streets of an outlook above the city square. Less people were out here at this time, for most had either gone to the market or were doing other daily business. The few who indeed crossed his path were those who had either got lost or were a city guardsman patrolling.
He didn't pay them any mind, and they didn't pay him none either at first. But his shady appearance and rough scar made him look like quite the rascal, and a few wondered if he was here looking for trouble.
Of course, he wasn't. At least not conventionally. He was here by a purpose and he would see it through. He wasn't sure how, or when, but in time he would exact his revenge.

While the festivities had begun, they were going to last all week. And the coronation itself wasn't going to take place until the next day. Many take the time to celebrate during the day and mourn the late King later on into the night, if they indeed mourn his passing. Meanwhile, any character of any sort may choose to pass his or her time as they will in the city. You may visit the tavern, the local shrines (most of the Gods of Good and Neutrality have their own shrines throughout the city), the brothel if that's your deal, browse through the markets or try your luck at exploring the backstreets where few souls now venture. Perhaps seeking out people in need of good deeds is your thing?

"Ah finally here its been a long travel but now I'm here" looking at the entrance to Dulrum jax starts to entering Dulrum he finds it so crowded. that he decides keeping a low profile staying in the shadows to avoid contact with anyone, searching for the nearest tavern he can find in Dulrum. Jax finds one that he likes after sometime wondering around the town and decides to go in to to order some mead. Jax walks up the the barkeep and orders a dwarven mead "Well this have to do I guess, Dwarven piss beer, is not the best would prefer a elven brew right now after this long journey" thinks jax while finding a place to sit down and drink. finding a table in the far left corner of the tavern Jax sits down and takes a sip from the mead his face makes a disgusted look but he still keeps drinking it. after a while a human kid comes in to the tavern "Hmm what does a kid to here alone" jax thinks as the girl strikes a conversation with him.

Lucia: Who're you looking for?

Jax: Why would you care?

Lucia: I don't know, what's a elf like you doing here anyway?

Jax: My adventure simply led me here, I'm curious myself why I got here. I'm curious about these festivities just like everyone else, just a short stop in my adventure.

Lucia: You're an adventurer!? That's so cool! Are you on an epic quest?
In some ways, yes. Mind telling me any stories? I would love to hear!

Jax: Well, on the way here I was ambushed by a pack of vile goblins. Armed to the teeth they charged at my from every corner. They didn't expect to meet a skilled adventurer like myself though as I quickly disposed of them with my swords.

Lucia Wow... To meet a hero like you, it's so awesome! You know, I'm quite an adventurer myself. I got some stories of my own if you want to hear?

Jax: Sure, why not? Sensible chuckle from jax.

Lucia: I once rescued a dog on the streets. He was limping in the middle of the road when a speeding wagon rode straight against it. So I threw myself and caught him just in time to slide away. That look on the boys face when I returned that dog, worth more than anything... Though I guess I didn't get a cool looking scar like you, I did scrape my knees pretty bad...

Jax: What you did was very brave. I'm sure that boy was very happy.

Lucia: You're pretty nice, I like nice people. You know... I'm kind of a helper. Why don't you let me help you to find whatever you're looking for?

Jax: I don't see why not. I'm looking for some good men to help me out with something. You have an eye for good it seems, perhaps you can go out and find someone?

"Why is a little girl alone and so willing to help stranger, well lets see if she actually finds someone to bring but first I need a refill" Jax goes back to the counter ordering a other mead and waits for the little girl to return at the same table in the corner.

Arrival

Phae'ox

~ 1 ~

The city, usually absent of light, was ablaze. Torches lit the way while roaring bonfires attempted to keep the darkness at bay. The flames danced with shadows giving the buildings a surreal intangible look. Compared to the giant monuments and the massive gate leading into the city the buildings inside were dull and uniform in appearance, yet somehow impressive as they were carved out of the very rock. The inhabitants of this colossal mountain were odd creatures and lived their lives beneath the bedrock. T'was the way of this people, the way of dwarves and he did not question the makers. Many a race seemed strange to Phae'ox and this day all but few were in attendance.

With heavy strides Phae'ox made his way through the market. His title and epithet: the Rook, fit him well. His large physique, and consequently large armor, made him quite distinguishable in the crowd. His massive weapon, although sheathed on his back and folded in cloth, drew wary glances from common folk and guards alike. Such conduct was not rare when met with an armed towering figure such as himself, but as he was recognized as a Lares and knight of a holy order the weariness and attention alike swiftly subsided.

After months of travelling, his journey had brought him to the land of dwarves. He had found himself here at the time of the grand coronation but he had no idea what he was meant to do or where to begin. So he made his way through the plaza towards the only place where he would find suitable guidance: the Dulrum temple of Sin Ashari. The dwarven city had many buildings of worship but none like the shrine his belief. The building was massive in every meaning of the word. It was grand yet humble in appearance. The knight stood solemnly at the foot of the temple admiring the building. This was how it should be, not dressed in ornaments and riches but humble. He nodded in approval as he climbed the first step, one of many leading up to the thick wooden doors barring passage into the temple. A man of lesser constitution would have found the climb exhausting. The broad steps fit for a Lares like himself would be awkward and tiring for many other races. As such the door was of Itin the heaviest of woods and required some strength to open.

The interior was lit by candle light and there were no windows. The walls and pillars were plain stone but the ceiling was carved intricately. The chamber wasn't very large and there was no seating. But against the back wall of the circular room there was a large stone altar. In its center of it there was a beautifully carved statuesque artifact framed by a circle depicting the faith of Sin Ashari it was all carved from the same stone. The floor near the altar was covered in a thick maroon carpet, its fabric worn and faded in color from countless visitors. He was not alone, but the way of things was to not disturb your brethren, for communion with the gods and the light was an action of solitary nature. Phae'ox took off his helmet and sat down with a soft thud, placing the helmet beside him. Legs crossed in front of him and hands on his knees: a familiar sitting position, one of habit, one that he had picked up meditating during his years at the monastery. It felt slightly awkward clad in armor but the familiarity was soothing as he closed his eyes.

He sat in silence and felt how the fatigue from travelling for months on end was slowly drained from his mind and body. His muscles relaxed and the weariness was replaced by a feeling of serenity and tranquility.

Eyes kept closed he began his communion with prayers. One for each of the gods of which he was of service: Janous the Just the god of all virtues, Crone the god of honour and glory and ending with prayers to Ulatek the Fallen and the Sin Ashari. As he uttered the last words of the last prayer he opened his eyes. There had been few to begin with but now there were even less people accompanying him. The visitors were many but none stayed for long. Once again he closed his eyes as he spoke to the light.

"I have come for your guidance." he said. His voice barely a whisper.

"I have seen what will happen if I do not succeed with my quest." he continued firmly. His brow furrowing in frustration.

"But how will I do what I am meant to, when I have yet to be shown what it entails or where I begin. Light my path, give me a sign." His concentration was broken by a sudden disturbance as metal met stone when a candleholder fell to the floor. He turned his head to see a young girl stumbling in.

"Oh no, no, no, no, no." she said to herself in embarrassment. She picked up the now slightly crooked candleholder and carefully put it back where it had stood before the incident.

"Surely this isn't it? Surely this isn't the one you sent to show me the path?" he said aloud in disbelief. He sighed.

"Very well." he said as he stood up.

"Show me the way young girl and I will follow." he continued as he gathered his things and strode toward the girl and the entrance.

"Sorry! I didn't mean to disturb you! Eh, what path are you talking about?" she said in surprise.

"What is your name young maiden?" he asked as he closed the distance between them. He nodded in acknowledgement at the answer and strode past her opening the heavy wooden doors.

He paused briefly in the doorway.
"Well? Show me the way."
