Alexei had just smiled at Zahra's comments on the 'defeatist' nature of his caution.
"We have to be prepared for anything, madame. Nobody likes the idea of being prepared to cut off their arm if a wound becomes infected, but sometimes that's just the reality." Alexei remarked. At that moment, another had come into their midst announcing herself rambunctiously as Marianne Trudeau, or 'maman'-- Mother. Playing mother to the squad wasn't something Alexei could accomplish, but from his minute of experiencing this lady, he was sure she might at least make a name for herself.

And that name would be 'battle mom', probably.

Alexei finished his mocha and snacked on a biscuit bar he had been saving. At that moment, Joey looked at his watch and announced for them to be ready. Soon after, the General Commander sounded off on their communication devices, and Alexei checked his comms as he stood up and put his helmet under his arm. He slipped through the coffeehouse and out into the corridors, heading on his way to the hangar while listening to Narra's briefing. He also announced that Zahra would be squad leader, and Alexei smirked. Watch over us.

Alexei got to the hangar, which was bustling with mechanics. The chief mechanic popped up on comms to tell them their mechs were ready, and Narra commented on this being done during their socialising. Alexei smiled, happy to know Vectis was plenty combat-ready. He finally donned his helmet, clipping it to his suit and then jumped onto the pilot bar that retracted, lifting him up to Vectis' cockpit. As the hatch sealed shut behind him and Alexei fell into his seat, his neural network interfaced with Vectis'. In his head, Alexei recited the mantra of d'Vexille in their mother tongue.

For the honour of all who came before us...

Vectis' systems began to light up, interfaces and visuals coming online. He then motioned Vectis to move, following Zahra's lead. The squad assembled at their assigned positions, and there from their vantage they watched the kinetic barriers in the distance. Alexei readied Vectis and Impetus on primary fire, and as the initial assault braced the kinetic shields, he opened fire alongside his comrades on the intruders. Lining up each shot in succession and pulling the trigger. One by one, Vectis shot gunship after gunship down. He was thankful that Narra said nothing of conventional forces. He continued his marksman rhythm, following the cue of Vectis each time Impetus charged up to full power for each shot. When the 2nd wave started to breach, he took to the streets with Vectis toward the front lines.

As Vectis then stepped out into the street, Alexei knelt down behind his shield as an explosive tank shell blasted against him, pushing him back several metres. He grunted, just at the force alone, but Vectis was unharmed.
"Contact! Vectis, engaging hostiles at Charlie!" He announced on comms, and returned fire with Impetus' secondary mode at the Red Star forces. They were conventional tanks and transport vehicles, scrambling to engage the NC properly with anti-armour weaponry amidst explosive suppressing fire. Alexei then leapt with boosted thrusters, rifle and shield holstered onto his NC as it transformed quickly into quadrupedal form.

Vectis bounded from the street and then off a building, strafing the slow-reloading tank shots with ease. After all, how could turtles hope to outplay the wolf? Vectis closed the distance with only its next leap, thrusters letting it drift as its wing blades powered up and assault guns fired. The tanks had no good options. They were either blasted away by the assault guns, or sliced in half by sheer heat. The small battalion lost their armour and their transport, and were reduced to fighting on foot. But Alexei considered them crippled enough to leave alone.

Even though ground troops could certainly use anti-NC weaponry to hurt him, Alexei had calibrated Vectis well enough to strafe even swarms of missiles, and then let the point defense deal with the rest, or at least the most dangerous projectiles. He would rather the threat of damage than vaporising foot soldiers. It never sat right with him.

Zahra then announced the presence of a cloaker when the 3rd wave breached the barriers, and Alexei followed her cue. He input values for Vectis' to output to the feet thrusters a small amount of power to propel dirt into the air with. Isaac came up on comms soon after as one of the machines-- Sahaquiel, engaged the enemy forces ahead of Alexei. He asked for real-time linking of the squads mapping systems, and Alexei was more than happy to oblige.
"I'm counting on you, monsieur LaBelle! Show the enemy some of that precision marksmanship that only brave lions of France would know!" Alexei positively reinforced on comms, his voice warm with comradery. He then continued his way deep into the battlefield near the shields.

Alexei pressed on well past Charlie, disabling tanks and transports as he came upon them. At one point on the prowl, a gunship squadron engaged him, so Alexei kicked up a smokescreen of dust as he transformed Vectis back into bipedal form, and took aim into the sky. As the gunships fired aimlessly into the dust, a stray shot or two clipping Vectis' armour and sending stings of pain through Alexei, which he ignored to focus on his shots. Before long, the gunships were spiralling out of the air and colliding with the buildings.

When he was satisfied there were no other outlines in the cloud, Alexei breathed a sigh of relief for the moment of respite. Then there was an odd occurrence on the comms. He heard the familiar voice of monsieur LaBelle, and immediately Alexei feared for the worst.
That's not good... He's supposed to be our long ranged support. Alexei thought, immediately thinking of how he expected to be taken over but had forgotten about it in the midst of combat. He didn't realise Akiyama's reach extended so far. With nothing else to do but take LaBelle's advice, Alexei became wary of the coordinated linking and desynced the intel feed toward LaBelle, hoping it would work. He then continued as one of the other pilots spoke on comms about training his weapons on LaBelle. Alexei gritted his teeth and cursed silently, as keeping close to cover just made Vectis less manoeuvrable.

When Chelsea mentioned Isaac, even turning toward him where he sat to clarify. Alexei beamed pleasantly. As he was about to comment, a veiled pilot, a Muslim woman Alexei remembered seeing at the briefing, spoke. She mentioned her autonomous drones, and introduced herself as Hafidh Zahra Mazghuuri, Hafidh formally and Zahra casually, sent as a representative of Al-Amir. Alexei nodded toward her with a polite smile.
"Pleased to meet you, madame. I'm Alexei d'Vexille. I'll be sure to remember your drones for the coming battle." He introduced himself with a slight courteous bow toward Zahra.

Alexei then returned his attention to Chelsea, or more so Isaac.
"And I met monsieur LaBelle earlier. How fortunate." He remarked as he looked to Isaac. "I asked only because I thought about when we were briefed about Osamu-- I got concerned about Vectis being taken control of." He explained. "So my only question is, are you good enough of a shot to disable instead of kill?" Alexei knew he was asking a lot, but he sure hoped Isaac would be capable of stopping Vectis from inflicting friendly fire.

Of course, if it is unavoidable, I understand.

After that, he noticed a newcomer whom Chelsea had complimented on the rosary on her hand. She introduced herself to Chelsea as Maria Leonora Trillanes; Len for short. Alexei smiled as the two conversed, happily listening and sipping his mocha as they did so.

@Scribe of Thoth @Landaus Five-One @Stern Algorithm
He had introduced himself as Isaac LaBelle, and then asked Alexei if he was from France. Alexei chuckled.
"Fortunately not, my family emigrated to Australia long ago, since before the Great War. Lucky for them too, we're not sure if we would have had the same fortune resisting Paragon there as we have with Red Star here." Alexei answered.

Alexei smiled happily when he heard Chelsea affirm his assumption. As Alexei took a seat at the table with her, plonking his helmet down finally, Chelsea thanked him for his aid during the battle, and how hectic it had gotten.
"I agree, it certainly was chaotic. But I am quite pleased you remember me, and more importantly that you've taken care of yourself since then. If that battle told me anything, your NC will be a very welcome support in this next fight." He replied, complimenting her role. Chelsea in turn complimented Vectis, and Alexei's skill piloting it.

As they conversed, the token drunk from earlier had entered, and made an executive decision to make a group table that started at the table he and Chelsea sat at. Regarding the noise of furniture being moved, Alexei shrugged at Chelsea's compliment, but with a humble smile. "I would be foolish not to credit my reputation at least in some part to my father. He made very well sure I was ready to fight at least as well as he did when he piloted Vectis before me."

Alexei quickly thought about Vectis for a moment, and then his earlier concern-- To avoid thinking of his father at a time like this. "Which reminds me, Miss Steiner, do you happen to know if any of our comrades here specialised in long-range engagement? A sniper, perhaps?" He asked. At this moment, one of the waiters brought over Alexei's order, to which he gave pleasant thanks. He gave it a sip as he listened to Miss Steiner, then took pause after her answer to try the mocha again. He was... Pleasantly surprised. The taste of real honey was absolutely welcome. On the other hand, the accompanying memories were... Mixed. A place of peace, of persistence, like the aviary on Wattle Road. But also, a place of loss, of struggle, like the day his father disappeared. A place Alexei in some part wanted to leave behind.

Of course, Joey knew no better when he mentioned the honey being sourced from Alexei's hometown. Alexei smiled out of habit when Joey guessed correctly that it brought back memories. Fortunately, Joey subsequently lobbied for a party called Remember Australia in the upcoming election. Alexei just nodded politely.
"I'll be sure to consider it, many thanks." Alexei replied. He then continued sipping his mocha as he chatted with Chelsea, every now and again paying attention to one of the rag-tag band of misfits that had been assembled here.
When the briefing adjourned, Alexei was probably one of the first to leave. Still holding his helmet under his arm, he stopped near the door and waited for one of the pilots who raised issue against going to the bar. He was interested in socialising with a kinsman, if anything; sure Alexei's family had lost reason to speak their lost language over time since they first emigrated to the country-- Spare small phrases for fun and others mantras of honour. But they kept their accent, albeit faint, and Alexei could detect it in the voice of the pilot who commented on intoxication doing little beneficial for combat ability. At least, Alexei wanted to believe he detected an accent.

When he saw the pilot come along, he walked alongside him with a light smile.
"Parlez vous Francais?" He began, with an ironic fluent confidence. "Forgive me if I'm mistaken; I thought I heard a hint of a familiar accent in your voice. I am Alexei d'Vexille, of the Southshell Alliance." He introduced himself politely. He hoped he wasn't being too presumptuous, but on the other hand, this acquaintance wasn't be all or end all. Alexei's time fighting alongside the Havenites over the last few years have given him the impression of a ragtag band of all sorts, so there was bound to be someone he could joke with over at the coffeehouse, if not the maybe-kinsman.

When they arrived at the coffeehouse, the barista greeted them and pleasantly introduced himself as Joey Glory. One of the first of his customers out of Alexei's comrades was a young lady who introduced herself as Chelsea Steiner. Sure enough, Alexei definitely recognised her from the briefing as the girl who first expressed her vote for the coffeehouse, but he also recalled her from elsewhere. He ventured forward with his maybe-kinsman if he decided to follow, and approached Chelsea.

"Might I could ask you something, Ms. Steiner?" He began. "Ah, pardon my rudeness, my name is Alexei d'Vexille. I was wondering if you were a mechanic pilot during the Battle of the Blue Mountains, a little while ago?" He wondered. I just thought I recognised you, but then again, I fought alongside a lot of the Havenites from Sydney." He added, hoping his intuition was providing generously another opportunity to socialise with his comrades.

He turned to the barista when he was free for a moment. "May I please have a coffee as well, a medium mocha with honey please?" Alexei didn't know what to expect at this point. 'Honey', these days, was mostly artificially synthesized, unless you were one of the fortunate Independant city-states to have one of the new strains of surviving bees. Most conventional bees perished without an abundance of greenery, and even back before 2077, Alexei remembered learning that bees were at risk of going extinct because of humanity's carelessness. Alexei's hometown was lucky enough to have a resident beekeeping family; going strong since 2007, in fact. A whole five centuries and seven decades of tradition, older than Alexei's family of 'defenders of virtue'.

In any case, he didn't necessarily expect Joey to have the 'premium' stuff.

One of their other comrades was a lot more open than Alexei, apologizing openly and introducing herself to everyone as EncarnaciĆ³n Mariano. The accent highlighted her heritage, if not for her looks and uniform. Alexei only recognised her as a leader of the Spanish Battalion that fled Paragon-led Europe. However, he did not have anything to strike a conversation with her, so he just stayed around Ms Steiner for the moment.

Alexei d' Vexille

Alexei had just finished having a shower when the intercom blared, summoning all NC pilots to Ops. He dried his hair with the towel thoroughly, ruffling his tousled locks. He then looked at his reflection in the bathroom mirror, towel slung over his shoulders. He pulled a cheesy grin, and then slipped on his jockstrap. He then grabbed his pilot suit, the same one his father wore, and d'Vexilles before him. Family heirloom, if anything, just like Vectis. The thought of both wearing and piloting tradition centuries older than he was sometimes crossed Alexei's mind when he slipped into the yellow trimmed black and red suit.

He zipped up and then picked up his helmet, catching himself in the mirror again. No cheesy grin this time. The memory of his father was like a cloud that hung over Alexei when he put on the suit. He sighed, but knew even if the other pilots weren't suited up yet, it didn't do for a son of d'Vexille to be unprepared. He slipped a pellet of gum in his mouth and then walked out, leaving his room and headed down the corridors to get to Ops. When he arrived, he was one of the last pilots filing inside. He didn't greet anyone unless spoken too, and just hung on the outskirts of the briefing, leaning against the wall and listening to General Commander Narra. As he paid attention, he noted his comrades around the room and assessed their reactions-- Nothing seriously analytical, just to get an idea of their personalities.

When Narra described the primary asset of Red Star; Osamu Akiyama, Alexei's brow furrowed. He didn't at all like the thought of control over Vectis being wrested from him. That alone just made the strategy-- if it can be called that, of pre-emptively assaulting the enemy and closing the distance swiftly seem less insane. At least then, if Vectis is taken over, he would be at too far a distance to injure comrades. Sure, Vectis had combat sniping capability, but that was for on the move medium distances. And there surely was an NC that actually specialised in long range engagement. He just hoped they won't kill him.

Then again; would dying really be worse than being a Red Star captive?

Alexei then pursed his lips when Narra described the Chainbringer Team. More so when he ordered everyone to try and capture them. Well, he only said 'if they can be captured'. Anyone will understand if we kill them so we don't get killed. That's just war, baby. Alexei thought, blowing a bubble and popping it back into his mouth. He folded his arms and then thought it over. But I guess, if we have to use disabling force on each other in the event of a takeover, it would be some practice... What a fucked up situation.

Then amidst all that, Alexei couldn't believe what he was hearing. Time to relax and hang out? He shrugged internally, whilst watching everyone's reactions and hearing what they said. Most of them opted for the coffeehouse, one of them who introduced himself as Caz-- 'the resident drunk' more like, opted for the bar. Thankfully, nobody opted for the bathhouse. It didn't really make sense anyways. Imagine if Red Star took down the shields early and caught them with their pants down-- Literally. Alexei smirked at the thought, however silly and awkward that outcome would be. After all, humour was hard enough to come by without making it yourself.

Alexei didn't really care to vocalise his opinion, since everyone else had made up their minds. The coffeehouse was the popular choice, and he'd just be stacking on top of that. Pointless. However, as hard as it was to believe they had this ample amount of time to prepare by socialising, Alexei was sort of grateful. He actively focused on getting something decent to eat and drink while finding someone to watch his back while he possibly charges headfirst into danger. This distraction what he needed to avoid thinking about what a waste of time the situation was-- That's not what he thought. It's what my father would have thought. He said to himself with a tang of annoyance.

Here is my application, I hope it's alright!

@Estylwen Fantastic, I'm looking forward to it. :)
@Estylwen, I've since updated Races, so "Bretons" can now be simply categorised as either Ravenfellans or Wesirinfellans (French or English/Scottish/Irish respectably). Please do contact me at any closest convenience about discussing anything to do with this.
