Well, since he can manipulate his bones, which to be more specific he can manipulate the calcium in his body(since that's pretty much what bones are made of), he can extend, reshape, and even shrink his skeleton at will. So if he wants to he could possibly even form a shield from the new/altered bones.

Power/mutation: Bone Manipulation - James can freely manipulate his own skeleton, able to use his bones as weapons and armor, though as a side effect his bones are at least as strong as reinforced steel, and he can regrow his bones meaning that even if something does manage to break one of his bones he can just fix it, and he heals faster in order to heal the wounds made from his bones being removed or stabbing outward to use as weapons.
