So, you want to become a trainer? Hmph. Seems like every housewife needs a trainer for a husband these days. Don't worry. I won't make myself sound more geriatric than I already am by being wistfully nostalgic about the past. Anyway, there are plenty of reasons for choosing a career like that when you're a hormone-addled, adolescent, mid-puberty teenager. Want me to list all of them out?

Very well, then. If you think that I'm being patronizing, don't. I'm just an old man making an inquiry about your future career choices. Obviously, you're not taking the examination to become a coordinator, ranger, militia man or a researcher, am I right?

I thought so. So, let's begin.

Is it the fame? Everyone wants the fame in life, from the rich to the poor. Recognition in the media. Signing autographs. Movies. Controversy. Gossip. There's a baggage for everything. Everyone's a sucker for becoming famous. Reknown throughout the world as the trainer who 'caught 'em all'. The problem is that you're competing with a thousand others to reach the spotlight.

So, that's a no from you. Alright.

Is it for economic purposes? Debt. Loans. Getting rid of taxes. Family in poverty. The League is a avenue for anyone with no valuable economical skills to earn some cash. There's another reason why Lance is known as the 'Dragon King'. Not because of his extreme prowess in the art of battling but because he sits on a large horde of steaming, hot money. Of course, you're looking to settle for less. You don't want to expend yourself too much. Of course, the problem is that you have to cough up money if you lose.

So, another no. Alright, let's up the ante a bit.

Peer pressure? No. Parental control?Adrenaline-junkie? No. Altering the geopolitics of the entire Kanto Region? No. Becoming Champion? No.

Then, what is it that you want?

..............

Purpose?

..............

Well, thank you for humoring me. I have enough time dealing with children today, especially as the Pokemon Professor. Go back to your home and rest. The examination is tomorrow. I'm sure you've studied well for it, given that you wanted to meet with me during my tea time.

Foreword

Now, I know what you're thinking right now. Why make Pokemon grim-dark, gritty and realistic? Am I trying to create some sort of depraved, twisted parody of a beloved children franchise? Is this my teenage edgy genes influencing me to create this thread? Am I some sort of sick bastard who gets off having hyperbolic descriptions of children getting eaten alive by ravenous hungry creatures? Am I just doing this to satisfy my kinks and jerk off on murder porn?

The answer to all of the above is...perhaps. I wouldn't be honest with myself if I said this wasn't a desire of mine and I wouldn't be honest either if I said if all of the above was wrong and I was doing it to create a genuine roleplay setting. The words, realism and pokemon, shouldn't look like they exist together but yet, there's so many indicators in the games, the manga and anime I can list off that are viable for this sort of thing. The manga, especially. The Pokemon Tower. The use of guns in the original anime. Ash getting nearly chomped apart by pokemon in the beginning episode. A ten year old facing off against what is essentially a glorified mafia organisation.
The whole concept of Pokemon is fucked up as it gets as well if you just put a little bit of thought into it.

So, why combine realism with Pokemon? To make it compelling. To make it seem as if the concept of glorified cock-fighting could exist in real-life. To try and create scientific explanations for how fire-breathing dragons exist or how mouses contain enough electricity to fry a person. Most of all, to have fun. That's the point of role-playing, isn't it? The purity of escapism at its finest?

Once again, I've tried putting this idea to the grindstone of forum role-playing as long as I have remembered. There were some successes.
Some failures. A little bit of both in between. Yet, it never satisfied me enough. I suppose that's a symptom of role-playing. Not settling for lesser and wanting more. Little bit of improvements to the setting and how it functioned. Better role-playing. Believable character interaction. Detailed prose. Realistic Pokemon is a concept that I owe my debt to as a role-player as it was my first forum roleplay and the catalyst for my growth as a whole through the year.

So, information about the roleplay. I doubt I have to repeat the basics of the setting and the history of the series of a whole since Pokemon has essentially been a worldwide cultural phenomenon that even a man living under a rock would have heard whispers about. First of all, you don't need to have any knowledge of pre-existing canon, games, manga or anime to help you here. Shattered Reflections is meant to be an AU of Pokemon that everyone can get behind, no matter their background knowledge of the series. It can even be as basic as 'Is that yellow mouse named Charizard?'.

The concept of the RP is basically a focus on a small group of beginner trainers embarking on their first trainer journey in the region of Kanto. Each trainer will start off with one starter pokemon. Starter pokemon qualify as pokemon that are in their first evolution stage and are reasonable for a beginning trainer to have. If you want to have a OP starter pokemon, you must have a good enough backstory to justify it. Why Kanto and not Aiola or some original fan-made region? Kanto reeks of nostalgia for me and there's a familiar feel to it unlike the other regions. You will be allowed to play female and male roles and no, I don't care which of the 40,000 LGBT tumblr terms for your sexuality you use.

The mechanics of the RP will mainly be linear-based with a side of sand-boxing in general. I am the GM of the RP and therefore, I am Arceus. That means, I control all wild pokemon encounters, almost every other NPC in the world, all enviromental, political and social factors along with the general functionality of the world as a whole. How will I decide encounters and how the world works? Well, with my brains and wit, I'm sure I can make a roleplay that doesn't seem to be rail-roaded and close-ended. Right?

Battling will work by the level of description in your roleplay post and the strategem you use against another trainer's pokemon along with a hefty dose of realism. For example, there is no way that a Ratata can beat an Onix without some serious anime logic and some suspension of disbelief. There will be no dice involved and so forth.

Each town or location such as the Pokemon Tower, Cinnabar Island and Pewter City will act as miniature sandboxes. Routes will act as more rail-road sandboxes. In each sandbox, players are able to capture pokemon, train pokemon, look around for wares in the Poke-Marts, explore the surrounding area or do anything they want to do.

Oh, and you know moves? TMs? HMs? Move tutors? Poof. Nope. Not in this RP. No HMs, TMs or moves in this RP. There will be no silly shit like Pikachu's using Earthquakes and so forth. This is usually the part where most people close this window and say ' What the fuck, The Bork Lazer? How am I supposed to viably battle now? This takes away all the excitement of battling'. Well, you see, my good role-payer, I'm technically allowing you more freedom in your ability to describe battles by stripping away the excess. Each Pokemon will be limited to their own natural abilities in this universe like most animals are. Water-types will still be able to fire bursts of water at their targets. Fire-types can still breathe fire. And so forth.

Likewise, feel free to consult me on a Pokemon's abilities and what they can do if you're curious.

In terms of the setting, I will be limiting details of the setting unlike my other role-plays and they will be slowly revealed through GM posts and role-play. Essential information about the setting of the RP will be down below.

Setting Information(Updated Periodically)

Rules

1. Don't do the God-Mod

Self-explanatory enough but in case I have to go further, god-modding is where you make your character god and have no self-imposed limitations on their abilities. Please don't do god-modding. Being god sucks.

2. Detail and Length

It is detailed above in the tagging system that I want this RP to be advanced/casual. That being said, I am looking for people who lie in the advanced category. Casuals are welcome but if you can type more, it is welcoming. That said, one of my main adages in life is quality over quantity. But, when quality and quantity are the same, then, it's all the more better.

3. Need all the help I can

I am not the best roleplayer and I recognize that. If you have any criticism of the world-building I do above or if you want to help world-build my envision of a realistic Pokemon world, please do so. I will gladly accept any assistance whatsoever.

4. Posting Rate

I am expecting a posting rate of at least one post per week or so. If you can do at a higher rate, I will gladly accept. However, if you don't reply for at least one week, I will be expecting a explanation or else, you will be booted out of the RP. If you want to get out of the RP, please PM me about why you are deciding to leave it in the first place.

Former Valorous Vigilant member, John Heinrich, walks out of talkshow as questions become personal

It's the hottest scandal in North America right now as Quinn Becker, the news presenter of CN7, has recently enraged a former member of the now de-commissioned government sanctioned vigilante group, the Valorous Vigilant - John Heinrich or by his famous psuedonym, Lumen.

Promoting his new charity organisation, the former superhero took slight offense to Becker's about his former vigilante past and how it related to the creation of his charity organisation. Heinrich responded by stating that " anyone could create a charity organisation, whether you're Superman or you're Superman.

When Becker continued to press the subject of his past-vigilante operations, Heinrich gave a hint that Becker was crossing the line, stating that " I thought this interview wasn't about hot gossip?"

The interview continued on unheeded before the final question that caused Heinrich to walk out of the interview, when Becker stated that he wanted to ask about "the works of fiction related to his past super-heroics." Heinrich testily agreed to it, the situation in the room becoming palpable with tension at this point in time.

During Becker's query about whether "the events depicted in the comic books were accurate of real-life events:, the former hero stood up without any word and walked out of the room, frustrated with the interview as Becker reportedly heard Heinrich remark that "don't have time for this BS."

Premise

In the early years of 1995, a massive boom of vigilantism started in the U.S.A as individuals with supernatural abilities started appearing out of nowhere. It was a limited phenomenon within the U.S.A. Whether it was a miracle of god, a experimental serum or some sort of tampering in the human genetic code from visitors from beyond yonder; people didn't care. They had powers now and they didn't need no stinkin' explanation for why they were now suddenly able to fly, lift locomotives with their bare hands or move objects with the power of their mind.

The U.S government, in the midst of all the chaos and all the vigilantism, decided to legally sanction superhero teams with government oversight without having them submit to registration and blaming them for simply performing acts of goodness. Samaritans, they were called. The unofficial term for 'heroes'. Numerous super-hero teams formed over the course of days and weeks, people from all walks of life who were determined to fight the Good Fight in this world. There was talks of leaps in scientific advancement, solving the ailments of third-world nations, fighting poverty and revolutionizing the overpopulation problem with the help of these 'Quirks'. From 1995-1998, these were known as the Golden Years in which all known Samaritans and the UN alike planned a international scheme to benefit countries all over the world with the help of their abilities.

Until 1999, of course.

Naturally, the baggage of all that came with these powers was that for every superhero saving a cat out of tree, there was usually someone else using their powers to break or subvert the law. Serial killers, snake oil sellers, frauds, burglars, sociopathic criminals, lawbreakers, villains, criminals and whatever. A period of 'cops and robbers' ensued where supervillains were captured by superheroes and escaped from prison numerous times. Attempts to design new holding cells to contain Quirks or fight back against them were useless. Supervillain Quirks recognised the lack of lethality used against them and were perfectly willing to continue their crimes. The public suffered for it and blamed their heroes all the same.

In 2001, the government quickly recognised the severity of the situation and decided to ante up. All superhero teams now had government oversight and had orders to specifically take down and kill any Quirks who broke the law or face retirement. A large proportion of superhero teams collapsed internally as members argued whether it was right to kill Quirks who broke the law or not. The government organised a massive effort known as the E.I.R.P (Enhanced Individual Regimentation Program) to control the 'Quirk' problem.

Fortunately for them, another massive wide-scale phenomena occurred over time. The Decay. A detailed thesis from Yale University indicated that the population of Quirks was slowly declining per year. Along with this, anecdotes and personal accounts of Quirks detailed a exponential loss in the quality and power of their abilities. Last year, they could lift a locomotive. The next year, they could only lift a van over their heads. It varied between every individual but one thing was for certain. The age of 'Quirks' was ending fast.

With this, organised 'Quirk' crime fell apart as cartels and criminal groups that relied solely on a Quirk's abilities were pulled apart hastily by the government. Vigilantism fell apart and visions of a Superman were blurred as individuals with vast amounts of power were reduced to a shadow of their former selves.

You couldn't see panels from a comic book in real life anymore.

After a number of congress hearings and decisions, a set of laws known as the Samaritan Concordat was made in 2010 in light of the ramifications that Quirks had on the culture of the U.S.A. Vigilantism was re-insistuted as a illegal law after 15 years of it being legalized in the U.S.A. Civilization continued to move on while the population of Quirks declined and festered in society. The work

In 2031, in a recent census, it has been confirmed that there are only 350 existing Quirks right now in the U.S.A, mostly concentrated in the region of Phoenix,Texas. Former superheroes and supervillains. Unmonitored by the government. No more 'Quirks' are being born. The future moves on.

Quirks and You

Quirks are the psuedonym for people in this reality who possess supernatural abilities. There is no limit to the variety and scale of these powers. Telekinesis. Control of electromagnetism. Turning yourself into a puddle of goo. Sticky hands. Telling the future. Quirks can have one single power or a 'grab-bag' of minor powers. Once upon a time, a Quirk could have shaped countries with his bare hands and fists.

Now? In 2031? Quirks are rather limited and weakened in their abilities and their powers have more drawbacks than advantages. You once had super-regeneration powers? Congratulations, you now have a form of cancer that regenerates extremely quickly and you don't regenerate as fast anymore.. You once had super-speed? Congratulations, the law of physics now apply to you and you will get shredded to pieces if you go past Mach 1. You could tell the future once? Now, you can only see certain futures which may not happen or happen at all, alternate realities.

Their powers only make them a threat to unprepared, non-military criminals or people with no training whatsoever. A competent police military or SWAT team have a fair chance of taking them out.

There are ways to increase a Quirks power temporarily to their prime but scientists have only created imperfect chemicals that have a toll on the body and are liable to kill the Quirk if taken in large enough doses. Quirks can't regain their former powers in bouts of strong emotion, either.

Your powers are weakening and there's no way you can stop it.

Roleplay Information

The main theme in this roleplay is the Romanticism of conflict and battles like in comic books and the loss of identity with individuals who are no longer in their prime. This roleplay will primarily explore in detail how powered individuals deal with real life issues and how the real villain isn't an over-the-top comic book super-villain trying to blow up a school full of children, but rather the worst elements of humanity at hand.

The main inspiration for this RP concept was Logan, a fantastic movie by all accounts. The over-arching plot for this RP will be completely different from the movie as a whole.

You will play as a former superhero or super-villain who is working in a white-collar or blue-collar job, trying to live the next day instead of enjoying their life to the fullest. You haven't used your powers in years and you are in your mid 30s-40s. My plan is for all characters of the RP to eventually meet each other and become involved in a local conflict that they want no part of.

Hello. Salutations. To whoever may read this in wherever timezone you may live in, you may call me by whatever puerile abbreviations or pseudonyms you create from my internet alias, The Bork Laser. To save you the trouble of exerting your central nervous system, I will provide you a myriad of nicknames which you can call me by.

E.G: The Bork, Borkus Lazorus, BORK LAZER (You may use your entire diaphragm to yell out this psuedonym everytime you type it if you wish), Laser Eyes, Borky, Lazer Bork, Brock Lesnar.

I am a teenage roleplayer who's currently in the middle of summer-break and in his college years now. I have experience role-playing in roleplay forums such as Iwaku and RPnation. I have decided to join RoleplayerGuild in light of the fact that I have viewed many of your roleplays here and I find them to be of a higher quality than most I've seen around the internet. RoleplayerGuild has a number of features and a format which is substantially different from the other forums I go to.

Basically, Tl;DR: I need some new proving grounds to test myself in.

I consider myself to be an adaptable role-player and I am willing to try new genres if the execution of the setting is good enough and my partners are capable of adept writing. I am constantly looking for ways to improve myself and RoleplayerGuild seems like the next step in my journey as a roleplayer.

Besides, no venture, no gain, amirite?
