'Dawn is breaking,' Garod noted uneasily. Light began to stream in through the windows of Celnaer manor, eliminating the already sparse shadows the thief used to remain hidden from the guards. Just his luck; he had been foolish to try breaking into the manor at such an early hour, and he had little to show for it, what with all the more valuable pieces of loot being in well lit areas with lots of guards. Still, these little trinkets he managed to nab would fetch a high price, if Bado could find the right person to sell it to.

There was no point in sticking around. If he was here when the sun finally rose, he would be caught in no time. Slipping through the now lit up halls, he made his way back to the dungeon where he first entered through a high window. It was too small for most to fit into, but if he sucked in his gut enough he could slip into it. But when he reached the dungeon, he found himself instantly regretting the decision, noticing the hooded men checking the prisoners, most likely to see if they had died.

"Go' a dead one o'er 'ere," one said, removing the chains from the shackled corpse.

"Throw 'im in the cart," another replied. The first obliged, carelessly tossing the corpse onto a wooden cart like a toddler discarding a toy he had gotten bored with.

Carefully, Garod crept through the dungeon, avoiding any loud surfaces and being sure to stick behind cover when possible. Thankfully, the dungeon was rather dark, even with the men's torches lit. Before long he had reached the window, crawling on top of wooden crate and sucking in his gut before beginning to climb through it. It was a tight fit, but before he knew it he was out of the manor and sprinting back to the inn he shared with Bado.

He climbed through the window of the room he shared with Bado, already discarding his gear.

"Do good, Garod?" the older man asked, giving Garod a start. Bado wasn't much of a sneak but, for whatever reason, he knew just how to surprise Garod.

"Well enough," the thief replied, opening his loot bag and emptying it out onto the table. "Just a few things that should fetch us some coin."

"Aye, better than nothing," Bado said, looking at the loot as though already calculating how much he could sell it all for.

"A high risk job, that. All for some junk." The thief crossed his arms, scowling at the handful of items he had risked his life for.

"Don't worry, lad. I can work with this."

"Let's hope so."

"Don't need hope, when you've got me." Bado grinned, laughing heartily as he slapped his companion on the back.

"Ha ha," Garod chuckled dryly, before releasing a sigh. "I'm going downstairs to grab some breakfast. You get to work on selling that."

"Can do."

Without another word, the two men headed downstairs, Garod sitting down at a table to have some ham and porridge while Bado made his way to the market to sell the loot.

City of Dark Rain: A surrealist cyberpunk/sci-fi setting and plot (still accepting characters)

Just finished up my private eye, who's more along the lines of a cyberpunk Max Payne than Rick Deckard or what-have-you really. Do tell if there's anything I need to change. Honestly kind of nervous because I feel this isn't as much up to par as everybody else's sheets.

The World Weary Private Eye

Appearance:
Jack is a rather worn down looking man. Body wise he's averagely built (if a bit flabby) and stands at 6'1. His brown hair has a few streaks of grey and his blue eyes are often scanning the immediate area for any signs of trouble. Usually his attire consist of a waist-length leather coat, a white dress shirt, a tie, and black slacks with tennis shoes, giving the impression that he's dressing for casual Friday at work. He has a world weary air about him, as though he's been to Hell and back and is waiting to make the return trip.

Abilities:
Gun-Fu - Jack has an uncanny ability with guns, elevating marksmanship to an art form. Whether it be picking off enemies with a rifle or laying down cover fire with a submachine gun, he's the man to go to when you need something shot up. He is, however, still human, and prefers to do a lot of his shooting behind cover rather than facing bullets head on.
Keen Observation - ... But the above ability is more of a back-up, in case things go sour. To Jack, violence is a last resort. He instead prefers to use his keen eye and deductive abilities to solve any problems he comes across. He also puts this to use when forced into combat, being able to spot cover and potential ways to take out hostiles fast.

Weaponry and Equipment:
Jack's equipment, due to his low income, is rather old and on the unreliable side. He carries on him at all times his old service pistol, a HexCo model Valkyrie, which uses rather primitive lead bullets over more advanced energy units. In terms of strength, it can be compared to an old world nine millimeter pistol. The gun holds twelve shots.
The only other things he carries are the clothes on his back, though this may change with time.

Backstory and Goals:
Jack Tanner was born forty years ago to a working class couple living in a rather derelict part of the city, where crime was rampant and poverty was the status quo. Growing up, he idolized the Enforcers, a group of mercenaries who were hired on as private security by countless companies. His parents weren't exactly open to the idea of their child joining up with a rather dangerous group, but this didn't stop Jack, and he joined the Enforcers at the age of 18.

Jack's work for the Enforcers mostly revolved around protecting HexCo, one of the biggest megacorps in the city. During his time with them, Jack near constantly had to face off against numerous criminals who wanted some of the corporation's finances to themselves. It was hard work, but it paid well and allowed him to move to a more savory part of town. It also led to him meeting his wife Kate, who worked for HexCo. The pair had a daughter, Melanie, when Jack was 26, and all seemed well.

Until it wasn't. Two years later, the Tanner home was targeted by rebels who wanted to topple HexCo, and Kate and Melanie were killed. This led Jack into a deep depression, as he blamed himself for not being there to protect them. This deep depression helped spawn his alcoholism, and eventually this led to his quitting the Enforcers at the age of 32 to become a private investigator.

Jack's work as a private eye was less exciting than his work for the Enforcers, his jobs mostly being snapping photos of unfaithful spouses or digging through records to information on a missing person. There were a few exciting jobs that involved gunplay, but those were few and far between. Still, it kept him afloat and paid for his bourbon.

Recently, he took on a job from a woman who claimed that an android was stalking her, and asked him to... "Deal with the problem". Jack normally didn't take jobs like that, but he was desperate for cash at the time and said yes. After tracking the android down and killing him, he heard a strange buzzing noise within the android's head and pried it open, finding some sort of radio.

It told him of the End of the City, and how if he went to it his greatest desire would come true. This sparked a brief bit of hope within him that he could bring back his wife and daughter by going there. With determination in his step, he went back home, hellbent on heading to the End of the City to get back what's his.

Garod, thief and scoundrel

Name: Garod

Gender: Male

Appearance: Click. Garod isn't stupid enough to wear that rather suspicious outfit during the daytime however, instead opting for a tunic and breeches then. He is a rather average looking man in terms of appearance, with a slender build due to going days with little to no food, a few scars across his fair-skinned face, and plain brown eyes and black hair that's often matted with sweat.

Personality: The easiest word to use when describing Garod is shady. If you take one look at him you'll find yourself clutching at your coin pouch tightly to ensure it's still there. He doesn't inspire trust in people, and he regards most with a similar distrust. In conversation, he's a rather quiet individual, and most often when he speaks it's to hiss out a cutting barb towards his companion.

Though he's most definitely not a saint, he isn't a complete wretch. He doesn't kill when off the job or even on, instead opting to knock out any potential threats or just avoid them entirely through stealth and cunning. His excuse for this is that it's unprofessional, he's a thief not a killer thank you very much; really, however, it's because he's not sure if he could live with himself if he did.

History: Garod can't very well remember his first few years of life, but all he knows is that by the age of seven he was living with a man who wasn't his father or any form of family. The man ran a crime ring, and used young Garod as a sort of errand boy, who would run messages and pick pockets for a loaf of bread a day. It was hard work, but it was better than the alternative, that being thrown with the thralls.

As Garod grew older so did his jobs grow riskier. Eventually he was breaking into the homes of people in debt to the crime ring and stealing anything of value they owned as compensation. These early years taught him valuable skills that he would find great use for later in his life.

At sixteen the young man returned after a well-paying job to see his employer captured by guards; it seemed that the man's luck had run out. Not stupid enough to stick around, the young man escaped with the clothes on his back... And the loot from his latest job.

So, he holed up in an inn, staying there and still thieving (though now independently... Mostly) to keep his ribs from meeting his spine. Eventually he began to move around from village to village, be it whenever the heat was on him, when work dried up, or he just felt like going somewhere new. Around five years back he met his current fence and occasional contractor, a man by the name of Bado.

The two hit it off rather well, and agreed to work together to make the most money they could. With Garod's talents and Bado's charisma, the pair were unstoppable. They devised a cover story, claiming to be diplomats from a distant kingdom and no you can't know what kingdom that often visit distant lords to 'negotiate the prices of land' and what not.

Not too long ago, they found their way to Cirencester, keeping up their usual facade while trying to find a decent job. Potential work seems to be dried up in this town though, and Garod is hoping that will change soon...

Loyalties: Technically, and only technically, he's loyal to the King above all else due to being a citizen of Mercia, though that can change depending on how much money someone else is offering. He is also loyal to his friend and fence Bado.

Bado, fence and would-be merchant

Name: Bado

Gender: Male

Age: 30

Appearance: Click. Bado is a tall fellow with a rather portly gut, a consequence of his more relaxed lifestyle. Typically, his attire is a red tunic and brown breeches. His reddish brown hair is curly and he has a rather bushy beard. With a fair skintone, hazel eyes that give the impression that he's sizing people up constantly, and a grin that would put even the wariest of customers at relative ease, he looks and fits the stereotypical description of a merchant.

Personality: Bado is a charismatic man, who uses a disarming smile and honeyed words to claw his way to money. He is rather affable and friendly, contrasting greatly with his friend Garod, and usually by the end of a conversation he finds himself with a new friend. This makes him the 'face' of his operation with Garod, and he finds himself in the role of diplomat and negotiator more often than not.

History: Bado was born to a merchant and his wife, living a rather posh life where he never wanted for anything. Things were well for the boy, but as he grew older he grew more greedy. Yes he had clothes, but they weren't as finely woven as they could have been. Yes, he had food, but it wasn't as delicious as what the lords and ladies had. Yes, he had money, but he didn't have enough.

Originally, he set his sights on becoming a merchant like his father, but he found that he would just wind up like his father: comfortable, yes, but not rich like he wanted to be. Instead, he turned to the criminal element of his home, using the skills he had picked up from his father to begin fencing for people. Due to his charismatic nature, he made friends fast, and eventually people also came to him to distribute contracts.

But if he wanted to make it big, he would need to keep moving. The town was nice, but eventually he would be caught if he just stayed in the one place. So at the age of 23, he left his hometown to travel, setting up shop in various towns and villages but always leaving before he had long enough to settle in. He felt a little lonely on the open road, and for once realized how lucky he was to have so many friends.

Then he met Garod. The thief was only 21 or so at the time, and was trying to sell his recently stolen wares in a marketplace to no avail. So, the would-be merchant decided to take pity on the kid and helped him sell the loot, and by the end of the day it was all sold for far more than the trinkets were worth. Eventually the pair found themselves talking about their respective lines of work, and decided to partner together to make as much as they could.

So, for the last few years, Bado and Garod have traveled through Mercia and the surrounding kingdoms, lying, cheating, and stealing to make a living. Bado found himself realizing that he was making far less money and living far less comfortably than he could have if he decided to become a legitimate merchant, but that was fine; this was far more fun.

Loyalties: He's technically loyal to the Crown due to being a citizen of Mercia. But first and foremost, he's loyal to his partner-in-crime and good friend Garod.

Been keeping an eye on this and I'd definitely like to join. I've been replaying the first two Thief games recently, so I hope you don't mind me making a (rather blatant) expy of Garrett. If you're unfamiliar with the series, he basically boils down to 'sarcastic thief trying to pay rent on time who sometimes gets wrapped up in big conflicts between factions'.
