Pacific Point- Fensdale Apartment Complex

Night feel across the city. Draping the street outside the old Fensdale Apartments in a blanket of darkness. The beaten asphalt road and worn concrete sidewalks it overlooked became obscured, almost deformed with the coming of the night. Battered street lamps lining the road cast aged orange light from their dying candescent bulbs. Their illumination was menial, creating little more than small orange ponds of light amongst the dark.

Rain fell across the city. The wetness and saturation hung in the air, giving even the crumbling bricks of the apartment a slick and glossy look in the dim light. Droplets struck the rooftops, ground, and fire escape in light sheets. Their pattering against the various materials unleashed a quiet song into the still city night.

It was the sound of rain that masked the opening of one of the apartment windows and the squeak of boots on the fire escape. A young boy, no older than thirteen, slide out of the window and closed it behind him. He was shrouded in the darkness of the fire escape but as he approached the railing, the light of the street below illuminated his face.

Garfield “Gum” Ubally Miller Ballsworth’s maroon eyes dilated. The perky feline ears sticking through his mess of blue hair twitched as he picked up the sounds of distant traffic, shouts from nearby apartments, and the occasional gunshot through the drowning fall of water around him. A giddy smile cross his face and though the cloth around his mouth hid it, the long thin blue tail sticking out the back of his pants made his joy clear.

It undulated in excitement, swaying and waving without the boy even realizing what it was doing.

“This is so awesome!” Gum said aloud to himself, only barely restraining his voice as he curled his fingers around the railing of the fire escape. It’d been ages since had managed to slip out of the house. Before he’d gotten sick and sprouted his new parts, sneaking out at night had been a breeze. The moment started sporting ears and a tail was when his parents, even his little sister, seemed to watch and listen to his every move.

During the day he couldn’t leave the house without a hat all but glued to his head and his tail wrapped around his waist like a belt. It was suffocating and Gum had waited for a chance to simply be by himself. That night his mother had all but collapsed after returning home from a late shift. His father had passed out on the couch like he typically did and his normally vigilant sister had crashed after Gum had ‘shared’ his stash of overly sugary candy.

“Now that they’re out of my hair I can finally have some fun. Let’s see just what I can do…”

Throwing his legs over the railing Gum hung from the fire escape. He felt the cool rain pelt his face and looked down. His family lived on the fifth floor of a six story apartment. Being bad at math Gum wasn’t entirely sure how much distance there was between him and the ground, but the queasiness in his stomach made it feel like a lot.

“Come on. Can’t chicken out now. All superheroes can do crazy stuff. The only way you’ll find out what you can do is if you try. Just let go, drop to the ground, and…” Gum hesitated, flicking his eyes back to the pavement below as his heart began to audible beat in his ears. “On second thought maybe dropping from one of the lower-”

The young cat boy shifted his hands on the railing, only for the wet metal to slip from his grasp. In an instant he was falling, dropping like a stone. His stomach felt like it was worming it’s way into his throat as an invisible hand dragged him towards the cold, hard, unforgiving earth. Adrenaline spiked through his veins and in a panic Gum lashed out.

With blinding speed one of his free hands caught the railing of the fire escape below where he had fallen, his stomach and legs colliding with the side of the fire escape as his descent was stopped. He winced at the impact and breathed heavily, only barely suppressing a shout as he clung to the railing with shaking hands.

It was only when he realized just how easy it was to hang from the railing that his panic died. Glancing down at the levels of the fire escape below him Gum reaffirmed his grip, took a deep breath, and intentionally let go. Like before he fell but this time he was ready and with quick fingers he grabbed the next set of railing with a dull groan of the metal from his wait.

Barely wasting a second Gum threw himself downwards to the next level of the fire escape managing to land on the railing with his feet and kick off. In three quick motions the thirteen year old descended the fire escape and hit the ground beneath the apartment feet first.

Breathing heavily Gum looked up, amazed at just how his starting point seemed at the bottom. What would have taken him a minute or two to climb down using the stairs he had cleared in a few seconds. Heart still hammering behind his ribs the young boy threw up his arms and cried out.

“YEAH! I REALLY DO HAVE SUPER POWERS!”

His excitement was short lived was he quickly cupped his mouth, remembering he was supposed to be sneaking out and quickly began to move down the street as lights on the second floor apartment began to come on. Running, boots slapping the wet concrete, Gum threw out his hands and did a cartwheel. He’d never taken gymnastics, but his muscles, the very fibers of his body carried him with a newfound ease he only now recognized.

Gum ran, pushing himself harder and harder until he cut through the rain and the night like a knife. He moved faster than an olympic athlete, occasionally jumping over parked cars and swinging from hanging street signs, laughing like the little boy he still was. It wasn’t long before his ears began to wildly twitch, picking up shouting, breaking glass, and then a series of rapid gun shots.

“That definitely sounds like a job for uh, well me I guess.”

Determining the direction of the noise Gum ran, legs, and lungs pumping as he closed distance with what he had heard. From the noises alone the whole thing smelt like a late night robbery in progress. As he approached the young boy expected to see a ransacked jewelry store, or a gas station, or an overturned armored card with fat bags of money spread out across the pavement.

Instead Gum slid to a stop in the poorly lit parking lot, staring at the shattered windows of a large yet unappealing looking store. His eyes flicked up to the large white neon sign that loomed over top of the store front itself.

BED, BATH, AND BEYOND. OPEN 24/7.

"There's no clouds in my sky!"

Character you have created: Garfield Ubally Miller Ballsworth
Alias: Gum
Speech Color: 48D1CC
Character Alignment: Walking the Line
Identity: Known
Character Personality: Gum is an imaginative, adventurous, boastful young boy who is always getting into things he should and rarely, if ever, doing what he's supposed to do. Despite growing up in a harsh urban environment Gum is somewhat naive and incredibly optimistic. Easily believing or buying into anything he thinks is cool or exciting.

In spite of his gullibility, Gum himself is very perceptive and thanks to his mischievous nature, can be rather deceptive himself. He possesses a love of tricks and a quick wit that lends itself very well towards slight of hand maneuvers and clever distractions. The boy has a tendency to go too far or get way in over his head, often failing to read a room or a situation before acting.

While his mindset can often lead to him making foolish, short sighted decisions Gum is good natured at heart and has yet to really begin thinking about the hard truths of life.

Physical Appearance: Gum is a young boy standing 5,5 with light skin, a gaunt but athletic build, and cyan colored hair cut in a short, choppy fashion that you'd expect to see on a 7th grader. His eyes are an unusual maroon shade that's often mistaken for a very strange shade of brown purely on reflex by most people. His eye and hair color are the result of a violent mutation, so the cyan color also extends to the rest of Gum's body hair as well (not that he has any yet being 13).

Besides his unusual eye and hair color Gum also possesses a long noodley prehensile cat tail, retractable claws on his hands and feet, and an additional pair of feline ears sticking up out the top of his head. The claws in his hands and feet are in proper proportion to the rest of his body, they're made of ultra hard keratin and appear white. His ears and tail are covered in the same cyan colored hair that covers his head.

Costume:

Normal Attire- Gum's casual every day clothes consists of a beige sweater, a brown wool knit cap, a pair of baggy cargo pants with a belt, and a worn sneakers that look like they're about to fall apart. This choice of clothes is half necessity and half practicality as his family doesn't have a lot of money to spend on clothes and he needs to keep people from seeing his feline features. The cap hides his 'other' ears and his cargo pants gives plenty of room to stuff his tail away.

'Adventure Attire'- When Gum wants to go out and do something mischievous, he changes his clothes into something more comfortable. A long sleeved black shirt he found in the trash, a pair of worn jeans with their knees worn out, and a pair of boots that have been cut up and lashed around his feet to make them fit. Adorning his knees and elbows are athletic pads he found in the trash and a black strip of cloth has been tied around his head to hide his mouth and obscure his facial features to a point. In his attire his ears are out and his tail sticks out the back of his jeans.

Origin Info/Details:
Gum was born to Nicky and Richy Ballsworth. The two were a young couple who'd moved to Pacific Point to take advantage of the wealth of jobs and opportunity there. Nicky had just gotten her degree in bio chemistry and sought a job at one of the research labs in the city, all the while Richy wished to pursue a career in business and stock trading. For a time the two did very well and made enough money to live comfortably in a pretty nice apartment.

However in spite of their financial and career success, they had very little time to spend with their son Garfield, who was left with friends or at home all alone while they were at work. Even after they had a baby girl and had someone a home watching their kids regularly, it seemed like every time they turned their backs their son was getting into something. He had a habit of getting out of the house and getting into places he shouldn't, following around complete strangers like he was gum stuck to the bottom of their shoes.

It got to the point he began to call himself Gum and his parents wound up doing the same eventually out of habit. Then the economy took a nose dive. Nicky lost her job due to the mysterious shut down of the lab she worked at and Richy's stock predictions were thrown off and they lost a tremendous amount of money on the stock market. Richy fell into a deep depression, Nicky had to settle for working at a local chemical plant, and they had to move to a smaller apartment in a pretty bad neighborhood.

Despite making less money, Richy suffering from depression, and living in a crappy apartment, Gum was rather happy to have his parents around more often. Even though he didn't like how they began to scold and actively punish him for his stupid behavior, he did enjoy being able to come home after a horrible day at school and get a hug from his mom and dad.

After a particularly stupid stunt that involved make-shift fire crackers and one of his little sister's dolls, Gum was forced to help his mother volunteer at a local animal shelter. The place was run down and didn't get a lot of funding, worse yet some of the newer animals there had been injured by people effected by Doctor Diplodoc ludicrous scheme.

Doing what his mother asked Gum helped around the shelter as best he could before growing bored and wandering off to play with some of the animals. Gum's attempts to play with a particularly moody, beat up looking feline got him bitten and clawed up. The bite was surprisingly deep and shortly after returning home he began to grow ill. Before Nicky could take Gum to a hospital a vicious riot broke out on their street that kept them from leaving their home. During this time Gum grew increasingly ill, experiencing strange and sudden pains all over his body, vomiting and defecating uncontrollably, before gaining a frightening temperature and going temporarily blind.

By the time the riots had ended and they were able to take him to a hospital, Gum had physically changed. His hair had turned a strange blue color, his eyes were a dark maroon, and he'd grown claws, a tail, and another set of ears. Fearful of having her killed by radicals, Nicky didn't take him to the hospital and had Gum hide his new features. Calling in a few favors, Nicky managed to run some tests and found out her son had been infected with a wildly mutated strain of toxoplasmosis which had either activated some dormant meta gene or afflicted him with some byproduct of Doctor Diplodoc's insane plan.

As his mother struggled with what to do about her son's mutation, Gum has been experimenting and enjoying his new features. Lately he's been teasing the idea of using his new found 'powers' to become a super hero...

Hero Type: Acrobat
Power Level: B. City Level
Powers:
-Animal Characteristics-

Cat Ears: Alongside his regular ears Gum has a set of feline ears on top of his head. These ears have a greater sensitivity than his human ears and allow him to hear frequencies and noises that would otherwise be impossible for a human to detect.

Cat Claws: Retractable claws are present on Gum's fingers and toes. They are in proper proportion with his body and while not overly long or any sharper than a natural claw would be, they are still very useful as natural weapons.

Cat Tail: Gum has a long, cat like tail with fur matching his now cyan colored hair. While obtrusive at times and often complicates wearing pants, his new tail gives him an incredible sense of balance. On top of that he also has great control over it, able to move it and coil it around things.

Cat Eyes: While Gum's eyes didn't change to match that of a cat's externally, they changed just enough inside that he gained a similar type of low-light vision to what felines possess. This effectively gives allows him to see in the dark, giving him a significant advantage at night or in poorly lit areas.

-Regenerative Healing-
Gum's immune system and the rate at which his body recovers from injuries was enhanced as an additional side effect of the toxoplasmosis strain that mutated his body. What would normally take weeks to heal now only take a matter of days and otherwise crippling injuries now heal with no noticeable loss in body capability or motor function.

Pacific Point- Siftroot Apartment 101

In a small apartment, in the center of an even smaller room, was a bundle of blankets in the center of a tattered bed. The blankets shifted and moved with the breathing of the being inside of it which slept peacefully, quietly, even as minutes began to roll by like seconds. Slowly the digital dials of the nearby bedside alarm clock began to roll up until, with a soft mechanical click, the radio began to speak.

"H-hi this is Pacific Point Radio and I'm your host, B-blot. Your old host-uh, Jeff, was in a tragic accident yesterday. And by tragic accident I mean a man claiming to be a 'Hound of Humanity' broke into the studio, cut off Jeff's face, and threw it out the window into oncoming traffic saying he was an abomination. So here I am, sitting at a desk still covered in dried blood wondering when they're going to find Jeff's face, and ready to give you the morning news"

The cocoon of blankets pulsed and a small arm reached out towards the radio. It's finger smashed down into the snooze button, sharp milky white claws jutting out of the fingertips from the force, but the radio continued to play.

"Uh, well there's not a lot to report honestly. A few of the Neo Seattle Seahawks were killed in a car accident, and apparently there's going to be a meteor shower tonight-which we won't see because we live in the city."

Slamming on the radio several times with clawed finger tips the hand pulled back and braced against the head as a head popped out from beneath the covers.

Garfield Ubally Miller Ballsworth, or Gum as he'd been determined to call himself, glowered at the alarm clock as the warmth he'd collected in his personal little nest was sucked from his face by the frigid room. He stood up, determined to smite the cheap electronic contraption for waking him up, but as soon as the rest of his body was exposed to the frigid air of the room all desire to do anything was sucked from his soul.

"So there you have it folks. This day is starting with 1981's Mike Post's forgotten hit "Believe or Not", because believe it or not that naked man made off with more then just Jeff's face..."

Breathing a visible sigh of defeat, Gum waddled over to the full length mirror beside his bed and looked at himself as music from the radio began to play...

Look at what's happened to me,

I can't believe it myself.

Suddenly I'm up on top of the world,

It should've been somebody else!

A young boy of thirteen stared back at Gum with narrowed maroon eyes. He had a brilliant head of cyan colored hair, short but perky feline ears sticking up out of his skull like Halloween decorations, and a long thinly furred tail that swiveled and shook in the freezing air of his bedroom. Had he not woken up to the sight a dozen times since his illness, Gum would have assumed a stranger was staring back at him from the mirror.

He couldn't help but grin as he saw himself not wondering for a second what the future held for him. He didn't know what he'd changed, if the changes had stopped, or what would happen if people outside his family knew he'd changed.

Any other boy would have had fear begun to breed inside him, but Gum only smiled as the music from the radio swelled. He looked out the window as the morning sun began to peak out from behind horizon. Orange rays illuminated Pacific Point, his city, the home he'd always known and now felt he could 'save' with his powers.

And he would save this city. Save the whole world! All it would take was a little time, a lot of bravery, and most importantly-

"Gum? Gum! Are you awake yet? You're going to be late for school!"

A day off.
Behold, the stars slide into alignment, and the great celestial bodies come into harmony, for my time approaches. One day, Tam will post, and it shall be glorious as heck.
