2) If there are successful and/or famous alumni, you’re determined to be the first to know about it and make it your fun fact of the day.
3) If you have siblings, your teacher taught them, and already has an idea of who you are before you walk into their room.
4) There is no escaping the kids of the same course level as you. You take honors? AP? That one kid that asks to borrow your pen will be in EVERY SINGLE CLASS AS YOU because he’s just as “smart”. You had a damn pencil last period!
5) Your school is known for one sport… that’s football.
6) You want to audition for the lead role in this year’s season’s production? Rather it be someone completely random, it’s probably your ex’s new girlfriend or your smelly lab partner.
7) Your ex is also your best friend’s ex and your brother’s ex’s little brother.
8) New transfer? Their life story is spread around the school instantly.
9) It’s hard to take anyone’s speeches seriously… they’re trying to motivate you but you start thinking about the time they pissed their pants at a haunted house…
10) Pranks come with MAJOR consequences. The principal recognizes the back of every student’s head. Small school means easier to find the culprit.
11 ) Mutual acquaintance? No such thing. We’re all friends! Or hateful enemies… but we do KNOW each other.
12) Gossip spreads even faster than germs, and flu season fucking sucks here.

Places to Visit

Family owned. Opened by a young man in his twenties settling down with a wife and a newborn daughter, some twenty five years ago. To this day, the diner happily employs kids in highschool who don’t have the experience, skills, or mobility to get a job down in the city. Always has good food, and is usually always filled. Once upon a time, it had an official name, but everyone in Westworth just refers to it as the diner.

The main hangout spot of most everyone that attends the unified school district, the Lanes started out as a simple bowling alley, but has expired to include a pizza parlour, a pool table, an air hockey table, a few pinball machines and a handful of ancient arcade cabinets. Nothing special, but it’s home on the weekends. Plus, they give students wicked discounts.

The corner store has many unofficial names, most of which spur from the different gas company signs that it has, based on whoever is offering the owner the best deals--Shell, Chevron, etc, but if you say Hopper’s, everyone knows what you’re talking about. Since the late 60s, Hopper’s Corner has been there, founded by an old man who, at the ripe age of 70, has finally retired. No longer is Brian Hopper the man behind the counter, that honor goes to his grand daughter. With the store under her mother’s management now, the young woman handles most of the behind-the-counter operations on the weekends and after school. The gas is slightly overpriced, but hey, they have to make a living. Aside from that, it sells cheap Gatorade, chips, gum, and 99 cent Arizona teas and it’s within walking distance of the school. Beggars can’t be choosers, okay? No, she won’t go out with you, don’t even try.

Technically part of the high school campus, the library remains open through the weekends, and is accessible to members of the community. The librarian, some people believe, is immortal--for most students, their father’s father recalls her being the librarian when he went to school there. These claims are, of course, mostly false--Mrs. Scott is merely healthy and took care of herself through her 58 years on this planet. She is helpful and quick to assist, and tech-savvy, especially for a woman of her age. The library itself is as well stocked as any, from The Art of War to See Spot Run, the Westworth Library provides its service to its people excellently.

The shelves of this general store are no taller than 5’6”, which means for most people, except for the shorties, can see the entire store no matter where they stand. With shelves like these, one would think the stock would be low, but more often than not it’s always filled to the brim. The store is spacious because of its layout. Wide aisles, tall walls, and not terribly claustrophobic. Mostly because the owner’s son hates tight spaces and spends most of his afternoons helping dad out. The best part though is how it makes you feel. The ambience. On top of the floors being glistening clean, there’s a constant smell of baked goods like Mama Jenkins apple pies, and the customer service makes you feel like you’re right at home. With a small pharmacy, Lucio’s Meatland Deli with premium quality meat products, and nearly everything in between, PJ’s has exactly what you need to survive, like food, snow sleds, gloves, duct tape… you know, the essentials.

An offset of the Colorado River, Westworth River flows through the mountains near the small town. During all times of the year, it maintains a consistent depth of four feet at its lowest point, and goes up to almost thirty feet at its deepest point. The river is crystal clear and seems deceptively shallow, but the people who have grown up swimming in it every summer know not to be fooled. There are a few landmarks down the river, including a swimming hole with a rope swing that is affectionately known as ‘Stoner Swing.

Not a state regulated site by any means, ‘the campsite’ is merely a stretch of land down the river’s bank that the people like to go and camp at. It’s been the spot of many things over its time in use--bonfires, drunken fist fights, lovers spending the night together alone under the stars… Tons of people use it as a fishing spot, as it's one of the few easily accessible spots on the riverside. There’s a stone fire pit that a senior class a few years ago built.

A huge boulder near the deepest part of the river, it’s used for two things: sitting on and smoking a doobie, and jumping off of. Once upon a time, the only way up it was to climb freehand, carefully scaling the back of it. Almost ten years ago, a kid combined the two things Hippie is used for too hard. He got way too high, and jumped off wrong, knocking his head on the way down. He fell unconscious and drowned. Nowadays, there’s a set of metal steps built into the side of the rock (another project by the class that built the fire pit, in an attempt to leave a lasting impression on the town). Kids still smoke and jump off of it, and the parents hate it, fearing that their children will fall to the same fate. Hypocrites, when they were your age they wouldn’t have thought twice about it.

The river flows directly into the gorgeous lake near the base of the hills that Westworth is nestled into. There’s a single boat loading dock that the people use to slide a fishing boat into, or a speed boat to tow their friends around on wakeboards or tubes. Some people are even lucky enough to have a jetski or two. Kids will regularly float from the top of the river down to the lake on a tube with some of their friends, an ice chest filled with their favorite drinks floating alongside them to keep chilled, and a radio blasting some of their favorite tunes. Summertime, and the livin’s easy.

The logging mill was founded around the sametime as Westworth itself, and has been a staple of the community ever since. A fair amount of the ‘old guard’ of men still worked there up until the last year. Skyline Logging closed down on July 11th, 2015. Now thoroughly abandoned, the machinery and most equipment still sits around the mill’s compound. An easily climbable fence is all that separates the teenagers from a bunch of powerful saws, glass windows, and who knows what else. Every day, at noon, the whistle sounds off, without fail. Considered ‘historical’ by the town, there are few plans to tear it down or really do anything to it--and there might not be. Although… it sure is a nice mill they’ve got there… be a shame if someone were to… vandalize it.

Where To Go

▹ The Den ◃

A small, offset building, a few steps away from the gym, the den has been virtually the same since it’s inception in the late 90s. With a dusty, out of style couch, a vending machine that sometimes works. The crowning attraction of the Den is an ancient tube TV, a relic of the past, with an N64 with seven games: Mario Kart 64, Super Mario 64, Bomberman 64: The Second Attack, Diddy Kong Racing, Goemon’s Great Adventure, and 007: Goldeneye. Years ago, all four of the controllers worked, but now only two of them are fully functional. Once upon a time, there was a copy of Conker’s Bad Fur Day in the Den, until the administration figured out what it was…

▹ The Gym ◃

More or less the pinnacle of the school, the Gym was recently refurbished (following a pipe explosion during last winter break) with better locker rooms, better flooring, new basketball hoops and backboards, even a new hanging scoreboard. The bleachers were replaced--not with cheap aluminum frames, but real oak wood. Those weed tax grants are seriously coming in handy… With a stage hastily set up in the center when necessary, the gym serves multiple purposes for the city: City council meetings, emergency meetings, emergency gathering place… It’s a useful building to the town of Westworth, and it always has been. The city is too small for an official city hall, so most council gatherings happen here.

▹ The Auditorium ◃

The 500-seat high school auditorium is the closest thing to a formal theater that Westworth has. The auditorium is shared by the elementary, middle and high school student body. This is the location of the annual plays and musicals as well as the rain date location for the high school graduation. In comparison to other parts of the campus, the aud is woefully outdated and in need of renovation. The chairs are squeaky and plagued with an ugly 1960s style print, but the stage itself and the equipment used for productions serve their purpose well enough.

▹ Principal ◃

FC: Billy Bob Thornton
Name // Age: Mr. Marcus E. Locke, 64
Personality: Mr. Locke radiates with dynamic and efficient energy. Always controlled, level-headed, and unfortunately seems indifferent, where it’s hard to read his emotions. He values courage and the willingness to face the many difficulties life may present to you. One thing he will never be is a push over and by now, everyone should know that he isn’t. Marcus has strong attention to detail, to an OCD level, and although he is indeed optimistic and friendly (open to jokes and listening to fantastical stories), people see his office as a landmine and NEVER want to be sent there. To those who aren’t use to his stoic expression and quick tongue, they tend to believe he’s unreceptive and uncaring. He’s the exact opposite, if you get past his whole exterior. This is your school just as much as it is his. Just ask Mrs. Coleman.

FC: Seann William Scott
Name // Age: Mr. Brent C. Locke, 43
Personality: Just call him Brent. Mr. Locke is his father… not him (sorta - just don’t do it). Unlike his father, Brent is not hard to read - good, bad, rain or shine, you will know how to approach him. He’s like a walking mood ring. His broad outlook on life allows him to see the big picture, something his father overlooks since his dad is more detail oriented. He attracts people because of his upbeat, yet laid back personality. Oh, and his charming smile. He’s the guy you go to, to soften the blow if you were caught doing something stupid. Yes, you’ll still get in trouble but it won’t be as bad as your paranoia is convincing you it’ll be. When he isn’t taking care of everything his father is not doing, and it’s just one of those ‘off’ days, he can become extremely aloof and timid. That’s a rare sight but it has happened once or twice. You’re more likely to see Brent around then his father, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Those who grew up with him know that he was one of the biggest daredevils Westworth had to offer. He use to dream about pursuing a career in extreme sports - particularly snowboarding. In old yearbooks, you can find pictures of him doing sick tricks down the slopes. To this day he still finds his way back to the mountains. Life has a tendency to throw curveballs at you, he can vouch for that. For sure. With no regrets, he decided to follow his father’s footsteps instead of his teenage dream.

Name // Age: Ms. Diana Bennet, 29
Personality: She doesn’t want to be here, and everyone knows it. Resting bitch face on, sarcastic attitude engaged, and Diana is all prepared for work. For the most part, she’s an unpleasant person, who gripes and complains about anything. It’s also not uncommon for her to talk about how much she hates this town and how she can’t wait to move in with her online boyfriend in Cancun, Mexico. There are very few, if any, that actually like her. In fact, there’s a rumor going around that the only reason she still has her job is because she’s screwing the principal.

FC: Sean Penn
Name // Age: Joe, 55
Personality: Years and years ago, the janitor used to be a traveling journalist for National Geographic. He climbed mountains, lived rainforests, walked deserts, sailed across oceans, followed birds as they migrated across continents, spent time in war-torn countries… He’s done it all. Now, he spends his days relaxing in the halls of Westworth High. Though he’s technically retired, and he doesn’t need this job, the janitor enjoys the company of the high schoolers. For almost the past decade, he’s happily told them stories of his adventures. He does indeed keep a stash of alcohol in one of the back cleaning sheds. No one’s gonna say anything, they don’t care enough in a town like this.

FC: Blair Brown
Name // Age: Mrs. Josephine Scott, 58
Personality: The librarian, some people believe, is immortal--for most students, their father’s father recalls her being the librarian when he went to school there. These claims are, of course, mostly false--Mrs. Scott is merely healthy and took care of herself through her 58 years on this planet. She is helpful and quick to assist, and tech-savvy, especially for a woman of her age. She hosts a book club at her humble abode every Thursday night with many of the adults of the community. It’s one of the few times Irina Fahey (one of Remy’s grandmothers) is seen out of her house on her wheelchair, since she looks forward to book club more than most and even plays the piano there occasionally.

FC: Kathy Bates
Name // Age: Mrs. Lauretta Weston, 55
Personality: Crass, loud, and blunt are the first words that come to mind when describing Mrs. Weston. Despite this, she loves to make the students laugh at her (inappropriate) jokes. Don’t piss the cafeteria lady off though! She’s known to seek subtle vengeance in her position.

FC: Arden Cho
Name // Age: Mrs. Grace Morris, 29
Personality: Mrs. Donna Gale, who was the Guidance counselor for almost thirty years, has retired, along with the old history teacher. Young Mrs. Morris is both new to the school and to the town of Westworth itself. She and her small, growing (she’s pregnant) family relocated when this job opened up in Mrs. Gale’s stead. Mrs. Morris is a professional woman, always well-dressed and wearing a beaming smile. Her background in counseling psychology makes her qualified for the job, but it is her kind heart and maternal nature that make her great at it. She is an exceptionally good listener and the sort of person that you feel comfortable going to with anything. Mrs. Morris functions as the school therapist, counselor, course scheduler, and career coach for the seniors. Stop by her office if you ever need anything, she is most certainly there for you. Mr. Ray has given her the position of coaching the Girls soccer team because the original coach has taken an undetermined leave of absence.

FC: Reese Witherspoon
Name // Age: Ms. Tempest Venable, 40 (Next Spring will be Mrs. Delaney)
Personality: A silly and vibrant woman who loves to crack jokes and occasionally geek out about her favorite shows: The X-Files and Star Trek: The Next Generation (Captain Picard for life). She also loves telling stories, watching football, and doing aerobics. Like most all school nurses, the entire student body loves her, simply because she lets them go home early or take a nap in her office.

FC: Ryan Gosling
Name // Age: Mr. Jeremiah Clarke, 37
Personality: Straightforward and hardly ever unnerved, Jeremiah rarely sugar coats or softens his words, just like his father, Lawrence Clarke, who was the history teacher up until five years ago when he retired. It doesn’t matter if you’re his student or his best friend, if you’re annoying him, he will blatantly tell you to your face, in front of everyone. His students are conflicted with doting on him because of his charming unkempt looks or being scared shitless by his mood swings. Sometimes he’s pleasant and fun, other times he’s cold and heartless but there is never a day he doesn’t challenge your mind and keep you awake in his class. Those who get over his natural intimidation have intriguing conversations with him and the occasional tips on how to ace the next test. If he isn’t in his classroom eating something sweet like Old Man Fahey’s cheesecake, while watching movies like Citizen Kane, he can be found outside the school gates with a cigarette. Lastly, he leads the student government meetings, which take place during Wednesday's study hall periods.

FC: Ian McKellen
Name // Age: Mr. Blaise Vanderfield, 74
Personality: Eccentric and vibrant, Mr. Vanderfield is a curious old man, who absolutely refuses to retire. He loves teaching and his kids too much! Not a day goes by where he doesn’t try to impart some amount of the wisdom he’s cultivated over the years into those around him. Moreover, not a day goes by where Mr. Vanderfield hasn’t had some sort of surprise for the class. Everyone is welcomed to come see him for any reason at all! Most days in his class are fun filled and exciting (not to mention easy to pass); hence it is no surprise his classes have been popular with the students. As expected, he enjoys all manners of writing, especially anything regarding fantasy. Don’t even begin to bring up J.R.R. Tolkien with him! Apparently, he has done his fair share of study into Tolkien’s universe. He leads Theater & Improv club after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Name // Age: Dylan Thorne // 28
Personality: Technology is the present and the future! Despite having only been here a year, Dylan is a fan favorite among the children (this may have something to do with his undeniable good looks, or that he likes to play SNES emulators during class. could go either way). Dylan prefers to be called by his first name from his students, and only corrects them to Mr. Thorne when they’re in trouble. He takes the Trig class he teaches seriously, and goes so far as to grade his Trigonometry students on how well they take their notes, and expects their homework to be done a certain way. If they don’t follow his format, they get docked points. His Comp Sci course is more lenient, as he does his best to cram everything possible into it: HTML5 coding, word processing, mobile app creation, and a plethora of other things. On Fridays, those in Comp Sci class get to chill and play different video games on the projector. What? Kids need an outlet, dammit. Dylan is almost always open to letting students into the computer lab during the weekend for whatever they feel like doing: tabletop RPGs, video games(the school has far and away the fastest and most stable internet connection in the town). Twice a month, he holds overnight sleepovers in the lab with pizza, lots of soda, and other fast food snacks that he snags from down the mountain, with a 10$ entry fee. This is mostly used to fund the yearbook production. Leads Mathletics after class on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Name // Age: Mr. Ray Delaney, 45
Personality: Assertive. Direct. Mr. Ray knows what he wants out of his students and how he wants it to be done. No excuses. Just do it. He’s a large man and has a personality to match. Prideful and with great determination, Ray helps his students be the best they can be, even if it means he needs to make them do a lap, or two, or three. Don’t worry, he isn’t a complete hardass. Deep down, he’s a full fledged geek, whose office is filled with laminated comic books (a good portion being collector's edition) and it shows in his demeanor. He wants his student to have fun in his class and his token jolly laugh, that makes his son shiver because he knows they’re about to play something that will DESTROY HIM, is a classic joke in Westworth High’s halls. Don’t let him catch you mocking him! Nah, he won’t do anything about it. He knows he’s a dork and so does everyone in this whole damned town. Ray might get some joy from scaring his students with his natural intimidation and then laughing, “Kids, I’m just shittin’ with you.” In other news, he’s always thinking of new ways to spice up his lessons and get everyone involved, even the sitting ducks or the ones with excuses. Now that his fiance is the school nurse, it won’t be easy to skip class to go to her and take a nap because he WILL find out. Along with teaching the best class of everyone’s day, he is the coach for Football, Girls Basketball, and Baseball. Some call him Mr. Ray, others call him Coach since he coaches the sports that matter. Nah, just playin’. But he is “Coach”. It makes sense.

Name // Age: Mr. Bradley Breakwell, 59
Personality: Despite his age, Mr. Breakwell likes to incorporate interesting, modern techniques and examples in his classroom, hence the addition of forensic science into Westworth’s curriculum. He is a harsh grader, but he generally treats his students kindly, and has a good sense of humor - well, good is subjective, but he starts every class with a science-themed joke!

Name // Age: Bradley Calloway, old (doesn't matter)
Personality: He takes his job very seriously, and considers shop class an important part to preparing the next generation of the backbone of society. Technically a genius, he possesses an engineering degree, but he prefers to just work at the small school of Westworth, and help children build and learn things hands on. Bradley is of the opinion that schools focus too much on testing and memorization, and instead lets his students build. He never says no to a suggested project, and occasionally fronts some money when students can’t afford material for what they want to do. For the most part, he’s rather liked by the students--that may or may not be related to his willingness to let them build catapults.

Name // Age: Ms. Veridian Davidson, 23
Personality: The new hire, straight out of college! The old home ec teacher decided to travel the world. Those who truly remember the hardass that was Mr. Derrick were those that took his elective faithfully every year. Home Ec Level 1, Home Ec Level 2, and so on, so forth. There was never a year he taught the same way and every year, things always got more challenging - to the point that you found yourself crying the night before a cooking exam. While Veridian is excited to begin her teaching career, she has yet to learn what works and what doesn’t with High Schoolers. Sometimes her exercises are too easy, other times they’re too difficult. Due to the stress of more or less learning on the job, Ms. Davidson doesn’t look like she gets much sleep and is generally all over the place. However, she is approachable and is able to understand the students more on a personal level than the older faculty members due to her closeness of age. She leads the Culinary Club after class on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Personality: Do not call her Ms. Church, pretty much everyone refers to this eccentric teacher as Mags - Ms. Mags if you are feeling formal. Mags is unique, mostly in a weird way, but she looks like a walking piece of abstract art. Taking art class with her is pretty much a cakewalk, she grades easy and values individuality and expressiveness in creation. Everyone is pretty sure that if Westworth drug tested their teachers, Mags wouldn’t even come close to passing. Ms. Mags leads the Film & Photography club after school on Mondays and Wednesdays and Art club on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Personality: Once a member of the San Francisco Symphony, she suffered an injury to her fingers years ago that caused her to lose her position--suffering nerve damage in her hands that made it harder to play the way she had before. Never one to fret, Rosalyn Thompson decided to take her knowledge and pass it on to the young people. For a while, she bounced around, until finding her home in Westworth, around five years ago. She’s a good teacher, but she understands that certain students are beyond the level of high school music. These students, she allows to use her period as a personal learning experience. She puts the advanced students in their own corner and let’s them do what they want. Leads Marching Band practice after classes on Mondays and Wednesdays and Choir on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Name // Age: Ms. Sofia Torres, 25
Personality: Ms. Torres is one of the youngest teachers at Westworth, aside from the new home ec teacher; This, in combination with her good looks, makes her a crush of more than a few students, which she refuses to acknowledge or indulge in the slightest. Ms. Torres grew up bilingual, her parents being recently settled immigrants from Mexico. She now speaks four languages fluently: english, spanish, french, and italian. Being fresh out of college and brand new to the school, Ms. Torres is still very much learning and, as such, is a relatively strict grader and her lessons sometimes come off as boring. Ms. Torres is also the cheerleading coach.
Note: For those who are taking ASL, they will sit in the back of her class, wear headphones, and do interactive lessons online.

Name // Age: Mr. Gregory Holmes, 48
Personality: Mr. Holmes looks a lot older than he actually is, probably due to the fact that when he isn’t teaching he’s getting smashed and doing who knows what else. He let’s his students call him Greg - just Greg - short, blunt and to the point, just like him. Greg is conservative and highly opinionated (see also: offensive), and is often seen driving his chopper to work in the summer and his massive pick-up truck with camo seat covers in the winter.

The Premise

Westworth Colorado.

A small, unincorporated town of exactly 1,234 people, nestled in the foothills north of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan area, in Jefferson county, Westworth is home to… almost nothing, really. A grocery store, a small general store and combination gas station, a diner, a lumber mill, and a hangout spot complete with arcade games, pizza, billiards, and even a small 4-lane bowling alley (though the leftmost lane is almost always out of order). Most people that live there work out of town, have worked at the mill almost all their lives, or are in high school and work at the diner, the gas station, or the small general store.

It’s very much small town, USA. The people are a relatively close knit community overall, sure some people have issues with others, but for the most part matters like that are kept private. Everyone is civil in person, and there’s always the occasional city festival that draws everyone together.

There isn’t a lot given to do, so the kids of the town have to make shit to do: floating down the river to the lake, throwing rocks at tree, getting crossfaded and camping out in the middle of the woods, racing dirtbikes up and down the riverbanks and trying to build awesome motocross tracks, getting so drunk you can barely walk straight and trying to play hide and go seek in the dead of the night in the woods, firing off a few rounds of your father’s handgun at a tree… Truth be told, no one cares what you do, as long as you’re not disturbing the peace.

Cops? Please, the only cop here is an ancient sheriff that collects a monthly paycheck from the state and mostly relaxes in his home. You wanna ride your uninsured, unlicensed, not fully street legal ATV to school? Go for it, he doesn’t care, you don’t even have to wear helmets.

Nobody cares, do what you want.

You and your classmates are struggling to make it through your last two years of high school, juniors. Your twenty-three person class has been together as long as you can remember. Some of the kids started in the preschool at Westworth Unified School District. There are a few ‘newbies,’ but in a town like Westworth a newbie could be someone who joined the school like two years ago. Others are students that thought they might like a larger high school in Denver or something, but ended up coming back, after missing the tighter knit community of the tiny high school.

Your classmates, while not always your friends, are your teammates. You’ve been on stupid field trips with them, like in fifth grade, when you all went and stayed in a youth hostel, with everyone nestled close together, and then there was the time you went to a stupid ‘teambuilding camp’ in middle school and spent almost an entire week doing nothing but trust exercises with your classmates, but hey, at least you didn’t have to go to class for it.

Now, your class is mostly concerned with raising enough money to take a sweet senior trip; your parents always talk about how they went to Disneyland in California for theirs, or how they went on a road trip to NYC. Well, you’re gonna do ‘em one better.

The hard part is going to be making all the fucking cash...

A Word of Advice

”Can you believe you're a junior already? I couldn't! I still can't believe I don't walk these halls anymore. It's been 7 years, I think? Wow. I'm going to hit my thirties soon... spooky. I remember helping my father back at the Diner, cooking things like the Rocky & Bullwinkle casserole or our to-die-for Heartbreaker burger. Still great, right?” Harper held onto the hand mic, her dark orbs never looking away from the next generation of leading figures. ”Thanks to my unyielding ambition and passionate voice, yeah, I know, here comes the encouragement speech, I relentlessly embarked on a journey that landed me a job at Google. The best part is, I'm able to stay in the comfort of my home while I program, which was kinda necessary since I chose to be with a man who joined the military right after grad. Not so much anymore since we're both doing pretty well.”

By now, everyone knew how successful she was. Word travels fast here at Westworth, but it was something she was required to say before she broke into storytime with her husband and highschool sweetheart, ”Look at me! Aren’t I just the coolest? Dreams do come true!” She loudly roared, causing some students drifting into sleep to jump, ”Y'know, after sweat, sleep deprivation, and alcohol! Don't tell Principal Locke I said that... oh wait, he's sitting right there. Hey there! Did you miss me?” The formally dressed woman, who was once known to be the biggest activist in this small place called home, gave the old man of the school a cheesy grin.

Principal Marcus E. Locke, who was sitting on the first set of bleachers beside the office staff members, lightheartedly rolled his eyes at the alumnae. She use to drive him insane with her constant office visits, where she politely (and aggressively) requested to make the cafeteria food gluten free or to upgrade the dinosaur computers that once resided in the library. If it wasn’t for Harper, these students wouldn’t have had some of the amenities the school has now.

”Most of you already know I can talk your ears off. I'm sure my father complains about it all the time, so I'll give Nick the floor. My contact information isn't that hard to obtain and I'm always open to answering questions."

Despite the formality of Harper’s wear, her husband chose to wear a black hoodie and blue jeans as he stood on stage. Honestly, he figured that if Harper hadn’t been invited, he probably wouldn’t have been… Initially, Harper had, well, harped about his choice of clothing, but he’d just shrugged and said ‘it’s cold out, Harper.’ Nick knew the truth: by the time they were done with their speeches or whatever they were doing, she’d be wearing the fucking hoodie. Probably before they even walked off the stage.

It’d been happening since they got together ages ago. Honestly, Nicholas wasn’t sure how he’d ever succeeded in getting Harper to love him, but hey--dreams do come true. That’s what wifey had said, right? Oh boy, they were looking at him. Did that mean he had to talk? He did have a microphone, but for most of their, uh, duet speech, Nick had just been standing there awkwardly. What? Being back at the high school reminded him of when he’d been an awkward little runt, just like some of the boys out there in the audience right now.

What could he say about high school? It didn’t matter in the long run? Don’t take it too seriously because no one cares? You can get anywhere in life through hard work and dedication? The janitor keeps booze in the shed outback by the field and never locked it? But, seriously, kids stressed over high school way too hard… Nick cleared his throat. Might as well tell them how it really was.

”I could stand here and I could talk to you about how successful I am, and how much the school here helped with that, and I could tell you what it’s like to be an officer in the United States Air Force, and how cool it is to work on fighter jets every day, and how I smile everytime I go into my job, but… You guys don’t want to hear that really, do you? Plus, Harper bragged enough for the both of us already.” Nick paused, looked over at his wife and winked. "So, I’m not gonna do that. Instead, I’m just going to tell you the truth: look, in a few years, high school isn’t going to be much more than memories, and you have to keep that in mind. I know it seems like it’s life or death now, but it really isn’t. Now, I’m not trying to say to you that it just doesn’t matter--it does, okay? But you shouldn’t overwork yourself, like if you fail to get into your dream university or fail to get your athletic scholarship, that it’s all over. Because it isn’t. High school is just the beginning, and what you should really focus on is making good memories. Make these last few years together with your classmates--your family for almost the past two decades--something you can look back on and smile. Don’t forget where you come from, Westworth is small, but hey, I spent almost my whole life here except for the last seven and I loved every second of it.”

Another pause as he frowned slightly at the microphone, searching for words to keep going in the right direction, ”there's lots of life advice that I can hand to you from the seven years I’ve had. I’ve traveled the world with my job and it’s awesome, for sure. I don’t regret it, but I didn’t get here just because of how I did in high school. I was an awkward nerdy looking kid in high school, but I grew up past that and I became an adult. Don’t just learn things in school, learn to fish, learn to work on cars. I could go on for hours, but just be the best you can be. Don’t try to be someone else, and don’t compare yourself to a celebrity. Just be you. You’re pretty good.”

”Just have fun, eat sweets, maybe walk and exercise as much as you can. At the end of the day, all I can say that’s really going to mean much is just be good to yourself and each other, because no one else is gonna be good to you. And… I’m out.” Nick saluted the crowd with a bit of a smile, then pulled the mic away from his face and looked over at Harper, shifting.
