The Wind Turbines are between 1.2 and 1.4 miles from the main part of town
Yeah I saw that as well. The longest confirmed kill with a modern sniper rifle is around 2.2 miles (3,540 meters). When you check records (Wikipedia for example) most shots over a mile are made with modern (post WWII) sniper rifles. And from what information I've been able to find snipers are trained to be accurate up to 1000 yards (914 meters). I figured that would be about the same for the marksmen. Which puts the town a little outside that range. Not saying Billy or Vickie couldn't make the shot, just that it may not be the most comfortable in foreign territory.
The hill offers better range on the town I think. Plus offers multiple escape routes. Though it doesn't offer much to cover Jain's approach.
As the tension died, a different rattling sound started. A moment later the sound ended abruptly and small grey and brown ball erupted from a nearby derelict machine. The ball hit the ground with a grunt, and Bista straightened. One hand pushed against the aliens back, while another two rotated a part ripped from the machine's guts. The little alien examined the piece carefully.
”Bah!” He muttered before tossing it over his shoulder. Looking around the Xexto noticed the gathering; Assuming himself to blame for the tension Bista did something un-Xexto-like. ”What? Never seen an Alien before?” He asked rudely.
After a moment Bista recognized the lack of blue on the newcomers. With a glance he saw that no one had weapons on the strangers. He assumed they were cleared to be there. The alien shrugged and turned to face the machine he fell out of.
William studied the map as Jain outlined her plan. He calculated distances in his head and frowned. The marksman knew the best site for overwatch, unfortunately the commander's position, and much of the city, was outside his range. Still…
”If you are committed to your plan,” Billy started, looking to Jain for a sign one way or another. ”You should consider posting an observation team here.” The marksman tapped the windfarm.
”The height the turbines offer allow a number of great sight lines.” Billy grunted, ”In fact, they may already have something established there.”
The marksman shrugged. If they had a lookout atop a turbine it’d be hard to take; With the ladder on the inside two could hold it as long as they had food and water. If taken by surprise though, well anyone atop a turbine would have nowhere to go.
Having shared his idea, William turned his attention to the rest of the map. The wish for topographic details mattered little. Until he could see the lay of the land himself he would have little additional input to offer.
@ReusableSword the only thing i see wrong with the tactic is if you poison a water supply you can't make use of it yourself; And you risk it leaking into the water table, which the fort would most likely have shared with any camp near them.
The injuries and lack of sleep related tactics would probably work well at driving off most grouos; And the use of fire would most likely chase off the rest, if only because of the attraction factor of the uunread. Both of those tactics are fairly easy to clean up and better then a semi permanent poisoned water supply.
Name: William “Billy the Kid” Phillips Age: 23 Description:
Height: 5’7”
Weight: 168 lbs
Eyes: Dark Brown
Hair: Dark Brown; Shoulder Blade length
Appearance: William wears a hat in public at all times. He is also commonly seen wearing a pair of dark tinted sunglasses.
Profession: Marksman
History: William comes from a fairly large family; While he’s an only child, Billy has 6 cousins. His father was a BIA agent policing the Warmsprings Indian Reservation. Young William was fairly typical happy 9 year old, though he had an interest in magic.
His family was spared the worst of the chaos, and were among those who started Lasthope. William’s happy life of magic tricks however was disturbed; The number of chores increased as the creation of a safe haven requires everyone to contribute. Billy began training with his grandfather as soon as it became an option.
William exhibited tremendous marksmanship, and had an uncanny ability to remain perfectly still. This caused him to be selected, against Mr. Raintree’s wishes, for the Marksmen program. It wasn't till the battle of the locks that Billy took his first life, and his second; In fact, William had an eventful battle, and understood his grandfather’s reticence at the youth becoming a marksman.
Skills:
Quick Hands: In his youth Billy wanted to be a magician, and started to learn the basic tricks; Most of which were slight of hand or card tricks. These gave him nimble fingers. As he grew older and the world changed William kept in practice as a diversion, even picking up lockpicking for escape tricks. His fast hands earned him his nickname and hat in a short lived festival quickdraw game.
Marksmanship: William is a natural deadeye. Be it with his rifle, William hits his target every time.
Stealth: William never really got the trick to disappearing from plain sight. However his odd ability to remain perfectly still makes him hard to spot in cover, and has attributed to people forgetting he’s even there.
William uses a Lee Enfield No. 4 Mk II rifle with No. 32 MK I telescopic sights. The rifle has been modified with a bipod to increase stability; And the bayonet is affixed to the end. To prevent the rifle from giving a stray reflection, the rifle has been wrapped in green canvas.
While rarely used William carries a tomahawk. It’s purpose is to allow stealth kills at midrange, and defense while serving as spotter. The tomahawk is 16" in overall length, with a 4 1/2" stainless steel blade.
This 7-1/2" full-tang karambit knife is used for close combat stealth kills; And in close combat when he cannot reach his Tomahawk. The 3-1/2" sharp stainless steel blade has a fierce curve.
Rather than wear a full Ghillie Suit William wears an easily donned/removed poncho with hood designed to serve the purpose. It’s length is enough to cover his full height down his back, and ends around his shins in the front. As they move through environments Billy adjusts the look of the poncho to match his surroundings.
The M49 is a fixed 20-power telescope used primarily for long range marksmanship observation. The front end of the body tube extends approximately three-quarters of an inch beyond the objective providing a permanent sunshade. The telescope is focused by turning the knurled focusing sleeve.
William learned to pick a lock in order to perform escape tricks. In his sniper training this basic familiarity was further trained to allow him to reach locked areas.
William’s deck of cards are well handled; They show signs of having been shuffled many times, and a few of them have signatures on them. Billy can often be seen idly shuffling the cards when he feels safe.
