As is the case with Dragons, Richard does not know the identity of his birth parents. Both of his adopted parents have passed away, affectively he is without family but there is no doubt several siblings running around out there.

Not at all! I love what you have to add, in fact I think I'm going to have to put your words into consideration. And absolutly there will be Dragons like Smaug, especially the older ones. But what I wanted to keep in mind is that, there aren't a lot of dragons anymore and for all their strength and cunning, humans have triumphed over dragons both in the past and present. Those special few who have stayed unchallenged for centuries could keep their pride but many more have been humbled, they aren't top dogs anymore and from the runts perspective they are dying out.

Thanks for the tips, I think I've got something I can work with.

• They have tough skin and are particularly fire retardant, only exception being their armpits which gives a direct path to the heart
• Proud things, their word is their bond and take personal attacks very seriously
• Create "Hordes", things that they can measure and admire. These Hordes can be anything really, from gold all the way to pebbles. As long as the dragon finds value in the object it will collect
• Will automatically know when something from their horde is stolen, react badly

I knew from the get go that someone turning into a giant death lizard would be a no go, so I've been bouncing around the idea that a dragon is a metaphorical title. Just a person with a crazy powerful soul, essence, whatever. Outwardly they'd look like a normal hum drum human but their souls is so monstrous that you couldn't possibly be a human.
