Kayou and the Cursed Swords

Chiemi Hanayo did not have time to admire the sunrise as the orange glow basked the capital of Kyushu in its glowing rays. She took a quickly glance to take notice of how the light played with the tall buildings and brightened up the dark corners of the streets, and how shadows crisscrossed across the cityscape to provide protection from the light, but that was all the time she took. Today was the day that she, along with a battalion of troops, would be briefed on a very important mission, a mission into Oni territory in an attempt to find a way to route the creatures. Chiemi had heard rumors about the 7 blades that were supposed to travel with the battalion on the mission and she had to admit the descriptions she had heard all seemed rather outlandish and fantastical, a blade that could sweep aside a dozen Oni in a single swipe and blades that made men strong or incredibly fast sounded as if they came straight out of a fairy tale. While she had her doubts about the usefulness of these legendary blades at least the leader of the mission was a man of honor and integrity.

Yasushi Miyoshi, was a great samurai with a fantastic record, honorable, and a good leader. If someone else had been in charge Chiemi would have had greater doubts about traveling back into Oni territory. Now, even if the legendary blades proved to be as amazing as described by some of the soldiers who she had trouble believing, partially due to their love of excessive alcohol, certainly there was no marvelous blade that could heal the sick and that is where her particular services would be particularly useful during the mission. A blade was only as strong as its wielder and it was her mission to make sure they were all up to the task, which is way she had been up 2 hours earlier, using her time in the capital to restock on her medical supplies, bandages, exotic herbs that would be impossible to find by foraging, and tea leaves that promoted health and strength.

While she was more of a country type of girl she was still no stranger to bartering and she knew well the value of the materials she needed. She played merchants against each other like a pro, "But you know, your rival on the other side of the street offered a much lower price for the same amount, I suppose I'll just have to go over there."

"Oh I'm sorry, did I say 10 mon? I meant 6 mon of course." The merchant clapped his hands together invitingly, but Chiemi did not bite, not yet.

"I think we both know you can go lower than that. I’m certain everyone would be shocked about how high your original price was.” Chiemi stared into the merchant’s eyes which tried desperately to find a chink in her armor but her no-nonsense sentiments made her eyes like steel.
“I can see you know your craft, alright I’ll concede.” Giving in, the merchant handed over the dried herbs which quickly found their way into Chiemi’s medical box, strapped on her back. Another bargain done, Chiemi moved on from that street stall in the capital market to continue her search for cheap materials. If they were going to be ready for the trials ahead no doubt she needed to be as prepared as she possibly could be.

I didn't necessarily mean like deep as in the heart of Oni territory, but more like places where Oni were getting a stronger presence during their increasing invasion. Easily fixed with a little rewording. Just waiting for the go-ahead now.

Name: Chiemi Hanayo

Age: 24

Sex: Female

Occupation: Doctor/Herbalist

Personality: Hanayo-san has a very down to earth type of personality and is quite a practical individual. She is very hard to rile up and has a very no-nonsense approach to life and her work. She is more than content to play her role in society and the war with no real ambition to rise above her station. One thing of particular interest is that she likes to be busy, be it gathering herbs or preparing tea she prefers to accomplish her tasks rather than chat around. If one finds themselves as one of her patients she will take complete control of the situation to ensure that the healing process proceeds as smoothly as possible, even if she has to give them a little extra pain to ensure their cooperation. Despite her professional demeaner and attitude she does at times show a softer side and can be a very good listener to anyone who just needs to get something off their chest. Chiemi is certainly a very dependable healer of both mind and body.

Background: Chiemi was born and raised in the northern regions of Japan where Oni attacks are much more frequent. A peasant to the core, there had been hardly any chance of a more interesting life, her lot going to be to marry young and raise a family on some rice paddy. This was not to be however as a traveling master of Kampo, the use of medicinal herbs and medicines, and Reiki, or palm healing. Due to constant Oni sightings and attacks the traveling doctor had many patients to visit. During one of his visitations the good doctor found he was lacking a vital herb while in the town Chiemi lived. Chiemi overheard the doctor’s lament, as she had decided to go visit him out of curiousity and much to the doctor’s astonishment Chiemi instantly knew the type of herb he needed and where she could easily procure some in the nearby mountains.

Impressed with her knowledge, the doctor quizzed the young girl who was only 8 years old at the time and found she had a natural talent for identifying herbs and creating medicines. Realizing that such a gifted child needed to be trained, and how such skills were sorely needed during these trying times, the doctor offered her family a decent sum to take her on as an apprentice. The ecstatic parents quickly agreed and Chiemi left her home to work as the assistant to the traveling doctor. She learned many things from the man and soon her skills were quickly approaching his, before she could fully learn everything from the man tragedy struck. During one of their trips they found a dying scout who had been attacked by Oni, the pair tried to save him but to no avail, he died in Chiemi’s arms but not before he told them to run; however, the warning came too late and some Oni in the area came back and found them. Knowing he needed to save Chiemi as she could save many more lives over time than he ever could, the elderly doctor sacrificed himself to give Chiemi time to run away. Chiemi was alone at 15 years old.

Chiemi was a strong young woman and managed to later recover the doctor’s books and recipies and so she went into the forest to practice her medicinal arts. After much experimentation and self-training with the doctor’s materials she felt confident enough to start her own medical service. She was able to avoid Oni detection even when as their numbers were increasing in norther Japan thanks to her knowledge of the land and medicinal herbs. One day as she was practicing her arts, healing the sick, once again she found herself crossing paths with men sworn to protect the land from the Oni. The men had gotten involved in a skirmish with the monsters and were in horrible shape but for the most part alive. Chiemi quickly got to work using her Kampo and Reiki skills she was able to help almost all of the injured recover and even saved a man who was thought to be a hopeless case. The moment that solidified her reputation with the soldiers was when she managed to fend off an Oni that was trying to get at one of the severely injured soliders long enough for the others to come to their rescue. Deeply appreciative of her work, word of the miraculous lady doctor spread throughout the army.

Because of her exceptional skills she was recruited by the military to serve and save as many soldiers lives as possible during the Oni invasion. After serving in the military as a medic for a few years she has found herself hand-picked to one of the members of the battalion to be sent with Yasushi Miyoshi and the 7 swords to put an end to the Oni threat. She will soon find her resolve and skills pushed to the limit.

Skills: The ability to easily locate herbs and create medicines from them is one of her most defining traits. Herbal teas are one of her specialties as she is easily able to brew them up even with the most basic of equipment. Chiemi is also a Second degree practictioner of Reiki, meaning she is able to send Reiki energy through hand placements and with special symbols even practice ‘distant healing’, of course any Reiki treatment is usually accompanied by more normal herbal remedies. Because of her Reiki training she is also accomplished as a messager and can use acupuncture as well. Due to her work in northern territories Chiemi had to learn some sort of defensive skill and so has some practice using her Naginata.

Equipment: Chiemi is never without her Medical Box where she keeps her herbs, powders, medicines, bandages, and even some medical textbooks for good measure. If there is someone in need of healing she is ready to get to work immediately.
She also carries a Naginata for protection.


Notes: Due to her rough, traveling lifestyle Chiemi is quite used to making rather nutritional based, rather than good tasting, meals. As such she does have a bit of a weakness to tasty treats and sweets when she can get them. If one wants to get on Chiemi’s good side the best way is by treating her to something tasty, after all, food is quite practical.

I was also thinking for her background it might be nice to maybe have her heal one of the other characters in the roleplay during her travels to build up a bit of an extra dynamic to the ground instead of just being picked for the battalion only for her skills. Any takers?

Personality:
Raina Rye is a very straightforward girl who often speaks her mind without thinking of the consequences. Honest to a fault, she has almost no concept of lying or misdirection and can therefore be incredibly naïve, believing pretty much anything at first. While easily tricked still she is one of the most loyal friends around and you can be sure to believe anything she says and even if she did somehow tell a falsehood you could easily tell if she wasn’t telling the truth. Raina is loyal to a fault but certainly not the most tactful of persons.

She can also be considered as quite a tomboy and is not exactly known for girlish tendencies. Raina is quite athletic and likes practicing mixed martial arts, fencing, horseback riding, climbing, and other athletic activities all in her very blunt and straightforward manner. Ready to tackle all challenges head-on, be it physical or mental, Raina is more than ready to charge headlong into battle, which however may not be exactly suited to her talents…

History:

Raina Rye grew up at first in a very well put together home with a loving father and mother. She wanted for nothing for the first few years of her life; however, this lifestyle would be changed because of a very particular incident which would drastically affect her life and personality, though her passion for the outdoors and physical activities would stay the same. Her father was actually a very prominent politician who was at the top of his career but when she was 8 years old a terrible event occurred. Her father was caught committing fraud and had been constantly lying throughout his campaigns and to the people. Her father’s true nature had been exposed, a side of which she had not even known. Very quickly her father’s career crumbled and their family lost most of their possessions.

Raina Rye found herself suddenly living in very modest accommodations with little in the way of luxury. Disgraced, her father tried other ways to make a living but just could not seem to keep an honest job and soon her mother divorced him, and she went to live with her mother. The whole ordeal strongly impacted her and she became completely ‘allergic’, so to speak, to lying and decided then and there that she would never lie or fib so she could never hurt anyone like her father had hurt so many during his political career. This ‘allergy’ to lying also seemed to make it so that Raina could no longer tell when other people were lying and so believes what people say pretty much all the time. It is unsure of if she has lost the ability to perceive untruths or if her psyche, being so traumatized by her father, has refused to admit to the possibility that people are lying. Due to her social ‘handicap’ she can find it hard to make and keep friends since her all truth approach can really put people off.

Seeing her daughter change so much, and also hoping that Raina could learn to be more lady-like in an all girls school decided to apply Raina to Hinamizawa Academy. Her mother actually had not expected Raina to be accepted and so was greatly surprised when she was, of course not realizing the true reason behind the academy’s existence. Raina was quickly whisked off to Hinamizawa Academy and frankly did not care what would happen at the school, as long as she could play and participate in athletic endeavors. Of course she had no idea just how much physical and mental work she would have to put in to be a magical girl.

Magic: For a girl with such a straightforward personality Raina was gifted with quite an indirect magic. Clad in black and flowing clothes Raina finds herself wrapped in cloth and chains. Raina is able to control and manipulate her clothing and chains as if it was a part of her body, responding to her mental commands there seems to be almost limitless ways to use her magic; however Raina has taken toward using it in a rather straightforward manner.

Raina tends to wrap the chains around her hands and feet in order to give herself greater attack power to her magical punches and kicks. While this method does have the desired effect the fact of the matter is that she could easily use her magic in much more efficient ways but because of her straightforward personality she seems inflexible in her thinking. Why does her magical girl form and powers seem so different from her personality? Could it be that her magical powers are actually showing more of her true self than even Raina herself knows? These are questions to be answered.

Trying to get this one started back up after my hiatus, thankfully I never got around to starting it in the first place so its all good.

Well my time in college and my student teaching is winding down to a close, or at least a small reprieve. I know most of you may have forgotten about this but I sure have not and if possible I want to start this up again. Considered making a new thread but before that decided to see if I could just reboot this one. I'm getting more time for myself and feel I now can take control over this roleplay.
