This is why, instead of simply being able to sneak behind a bandit, an intention to sneak has to be announced, so the GM can have you make some rolls to see if the bandit notices you/reaches out and grabs you/you get hit by a crossbow bolt before you start, any of which might actually prevent you from successfully sneaking
- It's a similar process for attacks: intentions are announced for attacks, but how effective they are and how much damage they do all depend on the stats for the enemy that the GM knows behind the scenes. He's got to make the calculations before you can know for sure if the enemy was killed or damaged or even hit at all.
