The primal urge to obsessively access your uni portal to see if your classes have been released, so you can read the syllabi thirty-seven times before class next week.

I glance at the rearview mirror in order to see Nero and smile sensually. ”A pleasure indeed,” I say. From beside me, Cassiopeia scoffs and rolls her eyes. I chuckled and looked back at the road.

”I’m Cassiopeia,” she states, redirecting the conversation, ”And this is Caden.” I recheck the mirror and wink at Nero before focusing on driving.

”If you didn’t already guess, I’m a witch. And don’t ask where I got my power from. I will not be giving you that information freely. And Caden is a shifter.” I tug on my seat belt even though it isn't restricted. I understand the need to inform Nero who we are; I’m just used to keeping what I am a secret. People — even supernatural creatures — get uncomfortable around shapeshifters when they learn who we are. We may be fun at parties, but we are unnerving.

I nodded, and we walked back out of the police station. We walked over to my car, and I opened the front door to pull back the seat. I gesture the demon to get into the backseat before putting the seat back and Cassi gets into the passenger seat. After I get into the driver’s seat, I pull away and speed down the city roads.

”What’s your name?” Cassi asks as we leave the city's limits after I have to make a stop. I never understood Cassiopeia’s need to stop to pick up drinks when we were in the city, but I never told her no. I did that once and it didn’t end well for me. At least she never made me go to the same place twice. Today, it was bubble tea, and although chewing my drink was different, I didn’t mind the taste of it. I switch the song on the radio while Cassi converses with the demon in my backseat.

I smirked at the strange little demon as they walked out. Cass goes second and I leave the Detective's office last.

”Ich könnte. Will you follow or do you need a ride?” As much as I didn't want to work with a demon, we would have to eventually. This creature was Crowley's and if we wanted it gone, we needed hell's involvement.

I smile at Nero and shake my head. ”I think I'll keep that bit of knowledge to myself for a bit longer.” Like Caden, I didn't trust many people, especially demons. They always tried to manipulate you in any way they could. If they knew my ability, they would try to take advantage. Luckily, I was warded against being possessed, but there were other ways of getting information.

True to his word, Detective Costa returned and handed me a file. “It's a copy of everything we have. Keep this to yourselves. I'm trusting you. All of you,” he said, looking at each of us, especially the demon, in turn.

”We'll keep you in the loop,” I assure him.

I stand up and brush off my jacket. ”That wasn't so bad. Now, the three of us should converse elsewhere.” I glance at the demon. ”An einem neutralen Ort?” I gesture towards the door for them to exist first.

I narrow my eyes at Costa. "And we don't have time to wait for them to make a decision. This is the third death in three weeks. Now, it isn't my kind being killed, so I can happily walk, but if you actually want to protect your people, then you will tell me and Cass what we need to know." I was done being polite. This whole thing could be stopped but the system was too damn slow.

Costa levels a glare at me, not to happy that I called him out on his bullshit. Cassiopeia walked forward then and Costa turned his attention to her, seeming to remember there is a woman in the room.

"I don't do this often, but you need to understand why we can't keep waiting." She rests her hands on the side of Costa's head and shuts her eyes. She visible winces but doesn't make a sound as she shares with him memories from somewhere. My hands tense into fists as I watch.

I've seen Cassi do this a handful of times and I always hate it. It always takes something from her, but she never tells me what. I worry it's a part of her life that she won't get back.

I share an image with him, images I had gotten after touching Nic. He shared a strong link with his parents, stronger than most, but that link allowed me to see past him and to what went after his parents. the monster wore multiple heads as it clawed into Nic's mom. I cut the image off when Nic's mom started to scream.

I walk away and stand beside Caden's chair. "It needs to be stopped, now. And now we know its from hell. This thing will not stop. We need the information you have and you need us to take the lead."

Costa looked between the three of us before he sighed and shook his head. "Give me a minute." He stood and walked out of the room, but I saw the haunted look in his eyes. I sighed, relieved and leaned against Caden's chair while we waited. I took the time to examine the demon.

"You seem oddly relaxed here. Do you get let out of hell often?"

As he looks me over, I do the same. I've never had a problem with demons. They love the ultimate ‘here today and gone tomorrow’ lifestyle that I like. They do have a problem with loyalty though. I have never trusted a demon, and I never will.

”Eine Geschichte für eine andere Zeit.” With a final appraising look, I returned my focus to Costa, who didn't look pleased. I decide to leave Nic out of the conversation for now. There was no need to give this demon more incentive to clean up every loose end. ”The killings are getting worse, are you any closer to finding this thing or are you going to finally let us take over?”

Part of the treaty with the humans requires us to work with the police force and defer to them when it comes to human safety, but this was just getting pathetic now. I was all for sitting back and watching the human population dwindle, but my reputation was on the line.

The flashing of their demon eyes does nothing to deter me, but I can see they are as much of a show-off as I am. I smirk and take a seat in one of the Detective’s chairs. I respond to the little demon with a flawless German accent, even though I just finished speaking English.

”Und was würde das sein?” I realize there are two other people in the room, and Cassi is shifting her weight impatiently, but I am enjoying the verbal sparring match too much at the moment.

We’re escorted back to Detective Costa’s office, and before the officer can announce us, Caden pushes past. I look apologetically at the officer before shutting him out. I turn around and take in the demon standing before us. Sorcerers get a bit of a bad rap when it comes to demons. There are a lot of misconceptions that we made demon deals to get our powers. That is true for some of us out there, but it isn’t true for me.

My magic was bestowed on me and I have ties to the land that give me my strength and power; although, I do use items aside from nature and my own life force on occasion to strengthen a spell.

”Costa, playing around demons now, are we? And I thought you had higher taste than that.” My eyes flash, shifting into feline-like pupils before returning to normal.

I look back at the demon and smile. ”Did Crowely send you to clean up his mess?”

As soon as Nic rides off, Caden and I are out of the car. He fixes the collar of his jacket as we walk before escorting me up the stairs and into the building. I roll my eyes but don’t tell him to stop. There were some habits that were hard to break, and chivalry was one of them for Caden. Sometimes, it was annoying, but other times it made me feel noticed. I didn’t completely mind it then.

We walk inside and immediately step. I sniff, and Caden’s nostrils flare. ”Great. Our worst fears are confirmed.” Caden huffed and tugged on his jacket before marching forward, requesting to see Detective Costa. Caden had been working with the Chicago police department since he arrived 10 months ago. They knew him well here.

I glanced around the room, trying to get a feel for the space and where the demon was. Caden had the skills to notice more than I could, but demons had a distinct smell that brought awareness to their presence. Of course, unless you knew to look for it, one would just assume someone had brought egg salad to work.

I sit back in the comfortable seats of Caden’s car and wait for Nic to leave the police station. At least Caden had a taste for luxury items. This was the nicest car I had ever sat inside, and it wasn’t even his only car. I pull a mint out of my bag and fiddle with the package before popping it into my mouth. Caden chuckles next to me. It was a habit I had had for a long time now; he clearly still found it amusing.

Finally, Nic walks out of the station, escorted by Detective Costa himself. ”Not the most incompetent detective I’ve had to work with,” Caden notes. I nod in agreement. Costa was a kind soul and was genuinely good. I felt bad sometimes when we had to inform him what exactly was attacking his town. Nic, however, looks less than pleased. He kicks a rock with his foot, and I see it heading right for Caden’s car. I mutter a word and flick my hand; the rock veers and hits the car in front of us instead. I know Caden. He would rip Nic a part if that rock hit this car. I muttered another word and cloaked our car.

It was still visible, but it was a different colour with different markings. Hopefully Nic would just continue on so we could get into the station without him noticing.
