Robert left a note in the house and headed for town in the very early hours. A coyote tracked them for a while, but Robert kept talking to his horse and the animal trying to keep both calm. After a while, the creature gave up and tracked other prey.

As the sun was nearing its rise, he made town. He stabled his horse at the inn then headed for Finn’s place. Robert knew where the secret key was kept. His new apprentice was asleep on one of the couches in the sitting room, just as he had done a few years prior. As he reached to turn the door handle to Finn’s study the old man called out, “How many times must I tell you, use your left hand to try the door.” Finn saw his shadow as he pulled the spare key out from hiding and when he approached the door.

As he opened the door, Finn called him over. “Let’s see if your years drinking in the capital paid off. Help me with this,” he said calmly.

On the table the map was rolled out with two other larger maps. He was trying to fit it. The problem was that the map did not fit with what was known to Finn. Just because we name something one way did not mean that the names on the other side agreed.

The negotiating was hard and Robert did his best to keep Wren out of the picture. To make matters worse, Robert had a tell when he tried to lie to Finn. So he had to be careful. By mid morning, he had the old man confused as to where the map belonged. By lunch time, Robert had the map in his possession but it cost him the forgery set and a promise that if he figured out the map or exploring the area that he would let Finn know. Criminals like Finn needed new markets to move stolen goods or gather items that might bring profit.

A quick bit to eat and he was off for the estate, hoping to arrive by the evening meal. He was hoping Wren would be pleased.

Cilia watched the exchanges with some interest, she was still weary of this new person. Axley's exchange and Snow's reaction weighed a bit on her thoughts. Fergus' willingness to give a benefit of a doubt was more in line with her natural thinking. He had not done anything aggressive or hostile towards them. But the last day had done little to let her think naturally.

She wanted to hear his story, it sounded like a story with some hope in it. He had engaged a larger group of them and was alive. That meant something and there was a reason, maybe fate or the dragons like Fergus said, or blind dumb luck. She thought his being a spy was a stupid idea. With an over powering fast moving force, why would they send a spy after them. They could have just overpowered them. She doubted any of them may have anything they would want, accept for knowledge maybe.

She lulled herself into the moment watching the water and listening to the world around the. She sniffed the air to see what she could smell. Death has a smell of decay and rot. People would be doing that soon. The undead soldiers had a smell to them too. It was an awful smell, unnatural and foul. As Fergus calling out the name "Tepet", it brought her out of searching to see if death was coming back to the now.

She too would watch and try to see what would happen.
“So, most of your people fly?” Asked, this was an interesting fact. “Well, town is about..” he said, then went and pulled a map from the bookshelf and unrolled it. “here and we are here, that would mean you could fly to town in under a minute. It also means that what ever hurt you flies faster than you or hunts in a pack.”

He sat back down. “If your map kind of looks like this one, he will figure it out. All of the school children of merchants, nobles, and town folk have some ability with maps,” he said calmly. “So, we need to get to him early in the morning.”

That meant leaving in the early hours of the morning for him. When the metal and ore got to temperature, he took some different sized sticks and had her hold them in her hand till one fit perfectly. “You will need a knife to defend yourself, flying away may start that war we want to avoid,” he said. “I will need to pack some things and head for town a couple hours after midnight. I’d like to catch my old mentor asleep,” he winked.
Then he said, “Eat a little more, change the bandages in case you need to fly and sleep for a while.”

He got up and headed to the blast oven, pulled out some casts to pour the hot metal into. He threw some more coal in the oven and put two smaller crucibles one with gold ore and other with silver. He would make a couple knives with virgin silver and gold inlaid, just in case the stories were true. Silver was suppose to hurt the wee folk and maybe his guests kind too. He wanted her to be safe.

When it was about time to leave, he cleaned up dressed in a black cloak with a grey liner. Nice dark clothes, black boots, his short sword in hand, he held out two daggers that he sharpened on a large stone for her. He had one strapped to each of his arms, and one in his belt, and an old knife in his boots. His horse was saddled, the bit and bridled darker not to reflect light, he also had a traveling cloak, a dress, pants, and a blouse, and soft leather boots set on the table.

The young man grinned slightly before continuing, "My name is Kian Le, and we are well met. Thank you for not giving me away to grumpy over there," he nodded over towards Haldemar's back

Atyna rode his horse well and nodded to Kian. He knew that the Master Haldemar was going to have a fit when Kian was found, he said not to go into the waggon. Could he help it Kian was there already? It would be nice to have a wingman.

Switching to oriental thieves cant he started to sing softly hoping that Kian had some training, "I am Atyna. A Left Talon of the Golden Dragon's claw. You are my younger brother, by deed. To the Master you are my blood stowed away. You will ruin the clasp if you pry. Let me help you with it later, so you don't ruin it." He winked and let the horse drop a couple steps back. He switched over to the eastern Common and sang a song that Haldemar would recognize about a chicken, a maiden, and a mare all drinking beer. It was very vulgar, but colorful and had made its way into the western pubs too. He started to sing it a bit louder and intentionally off key so that Master Haldemar would tell him to knock it off.

He could show Kian how to use lock picks when they rested. He wasn't going to give his new picks to someone who tried to use a knife to open an expensive lock.

Atyna Kitsu

Atyna was busy packing the things he would need for the trip. His guild boss had been easy on Atyna for the last six months, after all he had saved the Boss's daughter, Asano, from a rival gang. She was seventeen and it had been a heat of the moment things that happen when two young people end up trapped in a small space for two days. There had been tension between the two of them but, that warm night hidden in a warehouse, the energy changed from potential to kinetic and now the evidence of that conversion was showing. Master Nisun Choi, the guild boss, was under the impression that Atyna had killed the man who had done this to Asano. But Nisun was observant and had a different inclination of what really had happened to his daughter. The problem was Atyna.

There were three problems that Master Nisun had with Atyna. The first was racial, like the city he was between the east and the west, a half-breed. His mother was from the east and his father was western. He was a part of both but belonged to neither culture. That made him troubling as he didn't think or act like either group, he picked and chose how he acts. The second was that Atyna was like his father, an actor and a confidence man. You could never know when Atyna was setting you up or telling the truth. The final thing was that Asano had eyes for Atyna and Atyna was not good enough to be her husband. When she was around him, she acted.... Western expressing her opinion and worse, saying no to her father's requests. Atyna had probably only done honest work a handful of days in his entire life. To make matters worse, Atyna was wearing Asano's necklace pendant and family dagger in the front of his pants and Master Nisun knew it. The trouble was that Atyna was loyal, well as loyal as a thief can be to the clan and had helped setup some big jobs. Nisun needed to deal with him quietly and quickly.

The meeting that happened a mere thirty minutes earlier was quick and to the point. There was a caravan leaving town into new territory and Atyna was going to be part of it. His messenger bag was loaded with items that were "to hot" to fence in the region, so he could sell them where they ended up or killed by the guards for having them, a new set of thieving tools, a set of throwing daggers, a small bag of coins, and letters to help him negotiate and establish the illegal side of the caravan route. The merchant did not need to know everything that was coming with them. He packed what he thought he might need in a pack. He included some packets of healing herbs from his mother's shop, in case of bad water and other traveler's afflictions. He had been living in an apartment above the shop, so she could keep an eye on him.

As he came down, Asano was there visiting his mother who knew the truth at this point. She had heard from the houe staff what her father had decided. Atyna's mother slapped him and said, "I knew you would bring shame on yourself."

Then the three of them hugged. His mother said, "Come back when you have made something of yourself." Asano kissed him to the shock of her maid and told him "Come back alive."

As he arrived at the caravan, one of Master Nisun's lieutenants was there to see him off. A few words and a handshake with the merchant sealed his fate. He loaded his pack of stuff under the front bench of the wagon. Being told to stay out of the wagon. As he climbed on the front bench and waved to the assassin, he watched as his new fellow guard came running in, probably being chased by the guards and dive into the wagon.
Now, I need to get back to him.
Name: Atyna Kitsu
Age: 20
Strengths:
  • Sneaky as a black cat on a moonless night - Atyna has made his living in the shadows.
  • Good with a blade
  • Natural born performer - He can sing a little and act a lot more.

Weaknesses:

  • Fear of falling - He could run across a tight rope if he couldn’t look down, but if he did he would freeze.
  • Friends in low places - He’s got underworld friends who are there if he needs help, but it will cost him something. They also can call in past favors.
  • Sucker for a woman in need - Atyna would try to help a woman out and would not kill a woman if there was any other choice.

Appearance: He is tall thin man with an athletic build. He, like the city is a combination of East and West, his eyes are slightly oriental and his skin tone is western. His dress is mixed and and of enough quality to say notice me but not so much as to say pay attention. His hair is brown and his eyes are a clear green. He likes to carry a leather messenger bag with pockets for tools and papers.

Personality: I am picturing Atyna as a semi-reformed confidence man/thief that has strange luck. He likes people and cares about what is going on. While he does like the finer things in life, he also wants to help other out too.

There is a thrill in planning and attempting a heist. The same is true for making the escape but a lot less when you get caught. His fear of heights comes from and incident where the job went wrong and he ended up falling. It took him months to heal his body.

If you asked Atyna he would describe himself as a Robin Hood type character, but that is overly romanticized. He is closer to a slightly darker Remo Williams with a mix of Jackie Chan.

Background: Atyna was born and raised in Shou Lung to a troubadour father and a mother who was a healer. He grew up with a love of song and story. As a child he grew up listening to his father, when he was home tell heroic stories about thieves that saved the day, knights that rode into battle on beautiful horses, swordsmen that could fell trees with a single blow, and of course wealth. Atyna learned to spin a yarn and tell a story. He learned to sing a little and play a lute to pass for a bard in places most bards would not enter. This is when he got pulled into the thieving craft, he need to survive and the lure of easy money was there.

Atyna got his over active chivalry from his mother and older sisters. As skilled as his mother was, she was still treated like she was non-human. This was also reinforced by the priestess at the temple where Atyna was schooled to read and write a little in the main languages of city.
It has been years since I read the first three books. Went to check them out from the library with no luck.

I could make a second character.
