I was thinking more like, a spider came from over there. I took my sword out because it was so fast, as if someone threw it or made it appear..
Kind of less 'mimic' related - since they are indistinguishable from a normal object.

Yeah, just, I was kind of going for the whole sitting back and observing, occasionally interacting and making things happen out of the ordinary. Hard to do that when you are suddenly and impossibly detected :(

Okay, how is it that he not only detected an infamously hard to notice aberration but also detected a being that doesn't strictly even exist on this material plane - that is hidden further inside a gem on a ring?

The mimic didn't move, nor did it give any palpable sign that it was a mimic.

Zyrid is a being that can only make an impression on the material plane from within the Crystal ring, by both controlling the mimic or using his powers of manipulation and suggestion to effect lesser beings from his position inside the bright gem worked into the ring. He is not the mimic, the mimic is a means of his transportation and security in the material plane.
