Layette stepped back from Derek, releasing his arm. She looked toward Yay and hesitated a moment before addressing him.
"With all due respect, commander Yay, as Chief Medical Officer aboard this vessel the wounded are under my direct care. I have already sedated many of those who cannot be saved. There is nothing else that can be done for them without intensive surgery but I have already ensured that they will die painlessly. This kind of brutish execution is unnecessary."

Have you ever heard of "show don't tell"? It's one of the basic tenants of writing. I'm not going to pad out my posts with unnecessary words all the time just to appease a minimum length, cause that leads to some really long winded and amateurish writing.

There isn't much to be said there? Besides, it's an action scene so it's supposed to be punchy. Do you expect me to write a massive exposition that she's pissed when her actions and expressions clearly show that?

As the shot rang out, Layette's attention focused squarely on him, brow furrowed. She stormed up to him and grabbed his arm firmly, staring him down.
"Stay your weapon! What the hell do you think you're doing, sergent Hogan?" She barked.

Just denote the speech with quotes is all. Also, I'm curious which books you read that have that. What are their titles? I'd like to look them up and see their syntax.

For the last several blocks, Moses had been smiling softly as Raven rambled excitedly over a new exo-planet he had discovered and seemed quite excited over. Moses had grown to very much enjoy Raven's tales since he and her boss put aside their differences. Though perhaps 'put aside' was too strong a term, but none the less they had stopped trying to actively kill one another. This had let her get to know the little environmentalist better, though until now they hadn't had a chance to speak one on one and even though Raven was doing most of the talking, Moses was enjoying herself. The man's enthusiasm was infectious and she was quite fascinated by the details of the new planet; one apparently riddled with massive crystalline structures.

Already busy with removing a shard of metal from a private's thigh, Layette didn't bother with the formalities of a salute and simply nodded, gesturing her over.
"Hold her leg down, private." She said, grasping the shard of metal in one hand and a strip of synthskin in the other she waited for Sif to hold the leg in place before she pulled the shard out in a single motion. The woman cried out and Layette pressed the synthskin over the wound, discarding the bloodied metal scrap as the synthskin began to adhere over the wound.
"Thank you, private Artii." Sh said, wasting no time getting to her feet. She paused a moment to take stock of her medical supplies. The initial chaos had used up almost half of them, most people being either only minorly wounded, or beyond the help of a first aid kit. The only thing she was nearly out of was sedative.
"I am going to need to get to the medbay if I am to treat any more severe injuries." She said.
