Fin stared out into the splintered stairway of rooftops. An emptiness spanned out just as much into the horizon with no sign of life, the wind and the dead the only thing to reply to his echo into the arteries of the long dead civilization. Suddenly he tensed up and narrowed his eyes into the infinity of the horizon. His stale state quickly crumbled into a ball and rolled over the edge of the rooftop, landing onto the 6th floor balcony ladder. A loud clatter of agony rang out and the moaning mouths below had started to ritualistically clap their bloody hands against the wall up at him demanding an encore.
Glass rained like pennies in answer to the horde as fin boot shattered a window. A well stocked but not well kept kitchen awaited inside, having its long rotten ingredients and sauces splattered either on the floor, the walls or piled haphazardly across the counters and floor. The rest was a cave, a nest of shadow crawling back from the light. Any other windows had been coated in newspapers and the evident dust that was drifting in the air. Fin look inside and then to the opening of the road in the distance before lifting himself in the toothy mouth. The shock in his system was still running, his fingers trembling under the attempt by his thumb to crack them.
"...I can't believe I almost...fell for that..." he let out as a curse, his brows trying to strangle his eyes in anger. He gave a dismissive chirp towards the dark. In reply a hand held torch had light up. A clunky, camp version that light up a table, a TV and a few left out plates in a sharp ray. He picked it up. He cleaned the dust off with his shirt...then picked it up, again. Spraying it out about slowly. It was a studio apartment, a single room holding a bed, a kitchen desk, a mixed living room and a single little bathroom with its door left open. He walked into the darkness, his gun still in his hand as closed in on one of the windows. As he removed the news paper a filtered, misty light flooded the room.
A few creaks went out as he walked about, the floor beds themselves had holes in them from an obvious termite infection. The agonized auditory feedback gave the impression he was walking on a bridge left in the wild. Half the room was still in an curtain of shade.
"CRTSHHH"
He turned to look at the window. A piece of its shard had fallen to the floor and shattered, prompting a few to follow it. He stood still for a moment, looking straight as he listened. Something was moving, he could tell. It wasn't footsteps but there was damp, muffled kiss of liquid and wood somewhere near. His large ears twitched as he stared into the darkness before him, it was like a wall of tar between the windows view and the table and TV. He stared directly at the shadows, his gun rising before he gave a small whistle and the TV turned on. A loud "BRRRRRRRRRZZZZZZZZZZZZZT" hit the air.
Wood exploded into every direction, scattering like leafs from around the TV. The distinct sound of popping and dislocating brittleness hit the air. Fin covered his eyes as the corpse of the lumber leaped at him. Pointing his gun and then his light as the second snapping sensation came along with the unmistakable sound of electronics being deconstructed hit like chords of a junkyard musical artists. White rocks had erected through the floor in a circle, moving back and forth in a chattering display. The wood flooring had been reduced to chunk in its origin funnel hidden below and now the TV followed suit.
"What..." fin almost asked in direct contradiction to his philosophy before snapping back. He pulled his trigger faster than his heart could beat, lighting up the whole room. Each time the black mess had let out an agonized gurgle of gasping screams. The kind of scream a drowning man would churn as he went under. The darkness splattered with each shot, holes popped in an now out stretched pillar of oil. Each new puncture putting large sections its shape in odd directions, spreading ink across the wall like blood splatters. At the final hit it had fallen into the apartment below.
"Well..."
"That takes care of that..." Fin said. A mix between confidence and relief in his voice. He smiled without happiness at the hole. The sound of movement clear. The smile remained but his eyes hardened.
He reloaded swiftly and stepped towards the hole...holes. From apartment to apartment to the bottom floor. A lot of other things were missing too, beds. Wardrobes. Just big, missing bites out of random parts. Ink had leaked all the way down. He started to climb down, hanging from floor to floor before finally landing at the bottom. A "SPLASH" rang out in his ears as he realized he had landed in water. Black water. A jagged pipe poked out like a deviant nail from the wall made it clear the water was natural...the black...?
"Look" he said it as he started to scan the room. The place was totally empty, besides from the kitchen it was just a flooded mess. Broken and hole littered walls haunted the area. It did however have light, the boarded up windows with light..and maws at the cracks. Teeth gnawing and grinning at him in loud moans in every crack they could find or peel apart. Rotting flesh still residing in some of their mouths between the gaps.
"I don't know what you are...but if you give your soul to me..." he stopped at his own sentence as he looked at the black mist below him, then at the door. More grinning teeth that were trying to get inside. A mid strip had been off in some sort of struggle. "I promise...I'll treat you well..." he ended. The teeth were closing in, or the moans were getting louder. He could hear the clatter of calcium and squishy meat being bumped in his ears as if someone were eating sloppy pork by hand with no respect for personal space.
The walls each peeked at him with random and large holes, damp with the same sputter of liquid. He did casual 360 again before seeing a new crew of chewers the size of his head crawling in the water. Smiling up at him as if about to take a photoshoot, a flash of fire sparked like firecrackers in fast forward. Once again splashes of black went into the air. He didn't make the same mistake twice, this time. Every shot went straight for the mouth, and every shot spat liquid in an upwards direction before falling like rockets into the flood again.
"Boo" Fin turned to look over his shoulder. Only seeing a large, wide smile from each side of his sight.
A single scream roared into the city. It burst out like a dead building waking up from its nightmare, discovering the dead on its boarded windows peeling it scabs off and starting to crawl in like bugs into an infection. The unmistakable sound of a scuffle along the splashing of fumbling intruders and one pounding set of jaws took place in a band of panic before the orchestra of struggle slowed down. Once again, the city was silent.
