Last Exile is about a space alien from outer space who got booted off his space planet because he done a bad thing in space. He goes on a space journey through space to discover what his purpose in life is in space. Also, his planet died, and he's the last of his race left... in all space.

But... what if the Marshmellow Queen wants to MARRY King Edward Longshanks?

Identify 3 starting areas on the map, allowing players to pick either of those three. Categorise the starting areas as: "Westernised" (Roman/Greek/Egyptian like cultures), "Easternised" to cover the more outlandish nations that reflect the likes of India and China, and then an "Exotic" area, where literally anything goes.

That's not a bad thought. But it means splitting your playerbase into three groups, limiting interaction between them. I dunno. This is a hard problem to tackle.

One thing that might be important to ask is this: what are the origins of the different species and cultures on this planet? Was everything born on this planet naturally? Are you going for a traditional fantasy background? Or is there maybe a splash of science-fiction in this planet's history?

Personally, I'm not against the idea of distinct cultures slowly homogenizing, but you'd have to enforce that somehow. That'd be the problem.
Powers rise in the west. We are on the precipice of war, glorious war.

im sooo ded
3) is exactly what I'd love to see. It doesn't have to be our Europe specifically, but our "Old World." I'd love to see an exploration age at some point in this roleplay, so 3 is exactly what I want. And we shouldn't know much about the New World when it finally appears on the map. We might have old documents that hint at its presence, or certain folks might actively go there (English fishermen were actually fishing off the coast of North America for a while before it was colonized), but we should effectively know jack all about what's over there.

If I had to choose between 1 and 2, I'd choose 1. But again, I don't want to lock our minds around the idea of "Europe." What if someone wants to play a China-like empire? Or something reminiscent of ancient Babylon? Heck, what if someone makes something that doesn't quite fit into something from our world at all? Etc.

(I'm debating between what cultures to draw inspiration from and what fantasy species I want in my empire.)
Crayon Shin-Chan is an educational anime for kids in which the main character, a little girl named Shin, colors vibrant pastel worlds in which to play. This anime teaches kids some moral lessons and lets them explore history through its art. The construction of the Great Wall of China, for instance, is shown in traditional Chinese art, and the introduction of superheroes to the fictional world is taught with a combination of American-style comic book art and Manga-style art.

I'm just imagining giant mechanical dogs instead of cars and giant mechanical worms instead of subways.
@Shorticusif for story reason you wanted to hear it, there could have been an accidental open link between our PADDs or something, but it wouldn't have been over the main open comm's.

The only story reason would be to not have to change my post. *Clears throat*

I'll go ahead and edit my post some time today or tomorrow. Assume he didn't hear her scream, but instead realized "hey, that guy isn't being exploded, what's up with that?"
Firstly...

What do you guys think? Geography? Or plain? There's pros and cons to both, I guess.

With geography. It just makes things easier for me as a player. I'd love a climate map, too, actually.

So what I'm asking is, should the first evolution phase end at:

IMO? I love, love, love the Greco-Roman eras, and also the world even before then. Note that while I say that I'm talking about Europe and the Middle East as a whole. So many cool weapons and nations come from that time period. You don't get the falcata in the medieval era, nor some of the weird looking polearms. You also have a variety of different government systems cropping up: theocracies, republics, monarchies, tribes, dictatorships... It's a really, really interesting period, and it gets played way less than the medieval one. Plus, chariots and such are still a thing. And did I mention cool weapons like the falcata?

With that said, I wouldn't mind the first era ending in the Napoleonic era or the Age of Exploration instead. Actually, the Age of Exploration is a perfect example of a good time period for an NRP: gunpowder still hasn't dominated warfare, so it's perfectly common to see crossbows and even bows still in use. Cool formations like the Spanish Tercio are still a thing - a mixed unit of pike and shot - so you can have a nation that's focused around its old methods of war with veteran pikemen actually standing up against (or fighting alongside) a nation that's producing a bunch of greenhorns with muskets. Cool era.

EDIT: Again, dunno if I'll be joining this quite yet, but that's my thought.
