Perhaps Gaara can apologize to Sakura for absolutely decimating her ass back when the Sand attacked the Leaf lol, leaving Kakashi and Sakura to rest for a night. From there we can probably skip back to Konoha unless you'd want to cover their additional training on the way back?

I'm saying Kabuto would finish Taro off before he can be apprehended, but he wouldn't fight Kakashi and Sakura, he's just there to clean up. As of right now Kakashi is essentially his equal, if not his slight better, but Sakura is hilariously outgunned compared to the both of them. Kabuto would exploit her in an instant, not to mention yeah he probably came with some backup, and given Kakashi and Sakura are probably exhausted it's in their best interest to just take the children and go.

This can work. Kabuto can kill Taro while he's weakened to confirm that Orochimaru is indeed involved, as if the Sound ninja did not make that obvious enough. I think by that point it would be much too risky for Kakashi and Sakura to attempt to apprehend them, so Kabuto will suggest they simply go their separate ways. Taro is tutorial so yeah he might send the fodder first to soften them up and deduce their strengths in the meantime. He'll probably go for Sakura the hardest. I also want to set up Kabuto as a constant 'boss' for Sakura to deal with as she becomes stronger and stronger. Kakashi can even be fooled by him, so he's a pretty serious foe.

I think the details of the mission itself might need to be what we'd like to do. We can have it be a one-hit wonder where they spend the night at Tanzaku and manage to deal with him the next day, or they're ambushed on the way into Tanzaku, meet Taro and the Sound for the first encounter, then after dispatching some of the fodder they retreat for the time being. Kakashi and Sakura are a little ragged from their travels and have to recuperate after the skirmish. Kakashi can need recovery due to using his Sharingan, or Sakura can be somewhat injured and Kakashi can find them a room for her to recover for the night. It can be very similar to the Zabuza arc itself.

I know Toph believes in tough love but she made some questionable choices in LoK, and there was some favoritism for uh ...little sister of Lin, can't remember her name atm. Toph should have been harder on her, Lin was the one trying to be good and make her proud.

Leave it to me. We can have Sakura improve on everything necessary to keep away from someone as well as defend herself if the time comes. He's giving her the moves necessary to survive rather than obliterate someone completely. I think they can end up pushing Taro towards a lake so she can use her complete arsenal on him, as of now Gunshot and the standard academy techniques as well as his other tips and advice are all she's got.

You can have them finish lunch but for the most part I think they'd head to the lake and proceed with her training. The goal is to help improve water ninjutsu as well as her avoidance because Taro can basically one-shot if he has his hand on you long enough. If Sakura wants to practice her hand-to-hand skills beforehand she can raise the point and he'll run with it, teaching her some skills along the way.
