The only son of Stephen and Leah Holmes, a wealthy business owner and retired fashion designer, Adam was showered with everything he could want and it turned him spoiled.
Adam has his father’s features: A strong jaw and nose, firm dark brown eyes, a towering 6’0 frame, and thick brown hair. He’s on the muscular side and he’s quite vain about the way he looks. Adam has a few scars on his face, arms and neck from his rampages.
Abigail Rietherman

Adam’s older half-sister from their mother, she is his guardian until he turns eighteen. She did live with her father until she was twelve after her mother asked her to live at her house.
In contrast to her brother, everything about Abigail is little and petite, like their mother. Sharing not only her mother’s short stature and delicate features, she also shares her mother’s curly, raven colored hair. Abigail inherited her father’s gray eyes and pale complexion.

Description:
Highly contagious the disease is spread through either direct contact or, in advance cases the disease has become airborne through respiratory droplets. Characteristics of the disease are swellings of the body, particularly the lymph nodes of the armpits and groins, fever, vomiting, and in advanced cases coma or death.
The incubation period of the disease is 2-5 days, with the elderly, young or immune-compromised it is much more rapid.
As the disease evolved over the course of three years it developed three strains, like it had in the past:
‘Classic’—Swellings of the lymph nodes, the bacteria secretes a toxin that
‘Septicemic’—A progression of the classic disease, as the bacteria infects the blood toxins are secreted that causes clotting. Tissue death due to clotting and cutting off circulation is very common in this form of the disease. Often this is the most fatal.
‘Pneumonic’—The bacteria infects the lungs causing hemorrhaging in the lungs, cough and fever.
Symptoms:
*Painful, discolored swellings of the lymph nodes of the armpits and groin area.
*Fever
*Nausea
*Vomiting
*Hemorrhaging in the skin and internal organs
*Headache
*Weakness
*Necrosis of soft tissues of hands, feet, arms and legs

A genetically modified sample of Yersina pestis was created on Eden Island in 2010, kept hidden from the public until it’s outbreak in early 2014, the sample was to be used as biological warfare, planned years earlier. It was released into the public after an accidental transfer onto a scientist on leave.
It was never meant to leave Eden Island until it was contained and the American people could be vaccinated. Currently there are no records of a successful vaccine being produced in the four yearlong project. By June of 2014 1/3 of the earth’s population had been wiped out as it spread continent to continent. The CDC was unable to contain and isolate those infected. As of December 2014 the CDC ceased to exist.
By October of 2015 most of the world’s population had died. Several tsunamis, earthquakes and other natural disasters aided in the death toll.
In December of 2015 the plague, as it was penned in the New York Times back in 2014, reached its climax. By February of the following year it had died down but still remained an active threat to the remaining humans.

Within the region of New York there are many small tribes scattered across the land in their claims. Settling around sources of water they scrape out their living by returning to simple technology and hunting as well as gathering and scavenging.

*“New Age”: Founded in 2014, just after the outbreak, by a charismatic man by the name of Nathaniel Winters, the New Age religion started as a safe haven for those who felt betrayed by their god. As they looked for a new God, Nathaniel spoke of his visions of the sun telling him where to go, how to live and what to believe. Many tribes have converted to this new age religion. Nathaniel Winters was killed in a small tribe war in March of 2016.
Aspects of religion:
*Sacrifices of goods—plants, animals, and valuables to the sun god. More frequently human sacrifices are occurring as there are shortages of animals.
*Worshiping of the sun—following the movement of the sun through the sky, those that believe in the sun god pray for a new dawn of when they will once again rise and reclaim their old lives.
*Holidays—the solstices are observed and human and animal sacrifices are highly common on these days. Other minor holidays observed are spin-offs of pre-plague holidays, centered around the sun.

The small gift was enough to have her tearing up. “Thank you,” she said as she looked at the gift. It was in gender neutral colors, which was fine because Maia still didn’t know what she was having. Even if it was a girl or boy she wouldn’t push ‘gender stereotypes’ onto her child. Her mothers were lesbian which gave her a different upbringing than George who was raised by a single father. They had already gotten several comments about asking for boy and girl toys for their baby. Maia used to play with Tony’s cars and trucks all the time and she turned out fine.
Maia scowled as she turned to see the girl Ashley kissing her cousin. It wasn’t so much as a hate rather than a dislike towards the girl. Tony looked a bit freaked out and despite not talking to her cousin for several years she was still protective of him.
“Tony!” She called out to the dark haired man, “Come help me get some things for dinner!”
Anthony:
His eyes were wide as Ashley pressed a kiss to his cheek and he stood there dumbly for a few minutes. He caught her eye roll and sighed, “Your cousin is a very valuable worker—I think of her as a good friend.” Anthony sighed as Maia called him over and Ashley left. He looked at the little gift and smiled, thanking Cassie. “Dinner?” Anthony didn’t know that they had plans.
“Yeah, it was going to be a surprise but you’re here already. Cassie and her cousin are coming over as well,” Maia said as she went to grab a shopping cart. “You will be a nice host for them, got it?”
Anthony nodded at the sugar coated smile his cousin gave him.
“I’ll come get you guys after your shifts are over then,” Anthony gave a small smile. He still didn’t know much about what had happened between the two women while he was talking to Ashley. It was a little fishy on Maia’s part but he let it go. Maybe it had something to do with his art? Maybe they knew some models he could use or something. "Well I better let you get back to work. Thanks for the gift." Anthony said to Cassie before he left with Maia to collect a few things for this surprise dinner.

Her mother and father were there to help but they fought over money and the hospital bills that her brother Vincent had. Vincent was able to overcome several odds: first his parents were told that he would never be able to talk. Vanessa spent hours upon hours taking to her brother. His first word was Vannie since he could not pronounce his sister’s name. Vanessa’s parents split when she was ten, her father continued to be in the lives of his twins while they lived with their mother. Vanessa graduated high school with her brother, who was put into a nursing home by their mother. With Vanessa going off to college in New York and their mother working to support Vincent and their father tending to his new family, it was the best option for her brother. Vincent’s time on earth was short and he died just before the outbreak at the age of twenty.
Vanessa was studying to become a special education teacher. She didn’t know what happened to her mother, father, step-mother or half siblings once the virus hit.
Vanessa is described as looking more like her mother with her fair complexion and dark, wavy chestnut colored hair that falls to the middle of her back. Vanessa shares her mother’s heart shaped face and delicate features. She has her father’s eyes, a dark gray with flakes of gold around her iris. She also has a small birth mark on the left side of her neck. Standing at only 5’3, Vanessa still towered over her brother Vincent, as not only was he wheelchair bound but he was born very small.

His sisters Makenzie, Janet, Hailey and Hannah loved their brother but found him to be weird, like they found all boys until they started getting boyfriends. His parents had been high school sweethearts who had married right after graduation. His sister Makenzie was born just five months after his parents married. As a child Clark was into trucks, trains, planes and cars and it was something that carried over into adulthood. He had dropped out of high school to pursue his dream of working as an auto mechanic. Clark worked with his dad in their small family shop for a few years after moving to New York with a former girlfriend. Before the outbreak he had just opened up his very own shop.
He lost his girlfriend and their unborn child to the virus. Three of his sisters survived; his sister Makenzie was killed by a drunk driver when he was eighteen. His mother died of breast cancer last year, his father is currently alive but in poor health.
Clark has what many call the typical bad boy look: a scruffy jaw, unruly blonde hair, thick brows and bright blue eyes as well as tattoos and a few piercings in his eyebrow, nose and ears. His tattoos range from a portrait of his sister to odd objects such as a pair of pink fuzzy dice on the back of his right hand and a beer bottle. Clark would be considered short, standing at an even 5’8. He has a stocky, muscular build and was never one to shave or wax his body hair.
