Michael's Stress: 15 / Franklin's Stress: 15

The ride out of Lumbridge was, fortunately, uneventful. The two spent their time mostly staring at the strange wildlife and scenery that the Land of Adventure had to offer. (Baba, meanwhile, had been strapped into one of the truck's empty seats for safekeeping). Other than a village of what looked to be humanoid pigs, there wasn't much on the trail besides trees and wildlife. There were probably plenty of quests that they could still embark on, but those were unimportant compared to their main goal. They were after the big target now- one of Galeem's lieutenants. The two could only hope that it was a bit less difficult than the fight against Megadragonbowser. But despite their hopes, the two looked between each other with a serious look. Most likely, this fight was going to be harder, and the next fight was going to be even harder. They would have to be ready for intense fighting, more intense than anything before.

As the monster truck continued on, the scenery around them began to change, the sky taking on a strange appearance as constellations and planets started to appear where there was once none. The two looked out the windows, before turning back to each other, each nodding as to affirm that they had seen the same thing. "Be careful...something's up with this place." Michael's point was illustrated as they began to come upon giant tracks, no doubt of the beast they were out to kill. They began to pass through what seemed to be abandoned farmland, dotted with shapes that might be corpses, the sight not bringing any comfort to the two.

Finally, the truck stopped, and the two criminals piled out, Michael taking a second to look back at Baba, still strapped into one of the truck's seats. "Stay here. We'll be back soon." As he stepped out, Michael unslung the hefty sniper rifle off his back, taking a moment to pull the bolt back and chamber a round. "Big game hunting..." He muttered to himself, looking over to Franklin. They still hadn't found a better weapon for him- his nine-millimeter pistol would only annoy any large beast, although the plasma pistol could possibly do some damage. "Hey, unless you got a good shot, save your ammo. That plasma pistol's probably your only chance of hurting whatever we're fighting, so don't waste it."

Franklin gave him a nod. "Yeah, don't worry. I got this." He took a moment to take out the stealth outfit he had gotten from the lootbox earlier, placing it over his head and activating the night-vision goggles. They would help him see, and the outfit would hopefully make him harder to spot in the dark. "Might be able to use this to sneak up on it, and get a shot in like that."

"Good idea. Here, take this, if you're gonna be closer up." He reached down to his belt, taking out Needles' machete and handing it to him. Franklin simply gave him another nod, placing the machete into his own belt. The two continued forward, towards a medieval-looking fort. As they approached, they noticed a number of strange crystals. As soon as they looked towards them, they began to look away, something of a headache coming over them. Whatever they were, they simply hurt to even look at. They continued marching forwards with the rest of the group, but with a new sense of unease coming over them. What the hell were they going up against?

As they entered the fort, what could only be their target appeared, some form of massive beast. Off to the side, though, it became clear that it was not their only enemy. Amongst the houses, what looked like zombified medieval peasants lingered about. But they were nothing compared to what would soon emerge. Something was clearly trapped inside one of the buildings, and soon it broke through. The two could feel their heart rates increase as it emerged, and Michael gripped his rifle tight. There was something about the thing that made some primordial part of Michael demand that it was destroyed, and destroyed completely. The thing's cries seemed to anger the other monster, and the fight had begun.

The two stood there for a few moments, almost dumbfounded, while the rest of the group moved in to attack. After the initial shock wore off, though, the two were quick to get to work. Michael kneeled down where he stood, a decent enough distance away from the enemies, and shouldered his rifle. He turned his attention towards the Thing first, aiming down his scope as he looked for a weak point to target. He settled on the mass of crystals on its back, holding his breath and pulling the trigger, sending a .50 caliber round towards them.

Franklin, meanwhile, decided to attack the Thing as well, following behind the Centurion, but moving quietly and trying to stay in the shadows. As he got closer, the Thing extended some sort of tube from one of it's faces and bit down on Tora, something that he couldn't allow to happen. Taking out Needles' machete, he lined up his arm and threw it at the tube-like mouth, aiming to cut the thing off.

As Michael inserted the final dollar into the lootbox and stood back, he heard Bowser Jr. ask a question. "That's...actually a really good question..." Why did they only use USD, and not any of the various currencies found throughout the many worlds? Were they from a world where, like his, dollars were the accepted currency? Before he could ponder on these questions for long, the lootboxes began to spring open.

As the boxes opened one by one, Michael could feel his initial excitement rapidly shift to disappointment. As the final box opened, he and Franklin simply stared down at what had emerged, Michael scratching his chin as he frowned at their meager rewards. While there were a few interesting-looking pieces of armor, there were no weapons, and most of the items seemed completely useless. "That's it? Seriously?"

"At least the last one had some useful stuff...not sure what we're gonna do with this." Franklin added, looking over the loot. The two looked over towards Tora as he picked up one of the items- what looked like a pair of night vision goggles and a mask- and put them on. The outfit immediately began to unfurl, taking his shape. Once he removed it, it retracted back into its original form.

"Hey, it's fine." Michael said, responding to Tora's worries about touching his 'prize'. He looked up to the group. "Take whatever you want, it's your reward." He then looked back down to the goggles, looking them over before placing them in one of his suit pockets. If the goggles and mask worked, an outfit like that would definitely come in handy in the future.

With that out of the way, the two made their way over to the food trolley, each taking a plate and sitting down. Michael eagerly began digging into his food, while Franklin took a much slower pace to savor the taste of it. Either way, neither of them could deny that it was great food, and free food at that. Michael mostly kept to himself, too busy with eating, but Franklin paused occasionally to listen to what the rest of the group was talking about. They were sitting somewhat close to Tora, and he nodded along as he spoke about the red-eyed people still among them. Looking over his shoulder to make sure that Geralt or anyone else still under the influence was listening, he leaned in and whispered his thoughts. "Yeah...but let's not start a fight near here. Maybe we can wait until they get knocked down out there, and them hit 'em with the heart-thing."

Meanwhile, as Michael continued to dig into his food, he took a moment to look up as Hat Kid sat next to him. Still chewing, he watched as she slid the bag of rupees over to him. Swallowing his food, he took the bag and looked it over, seeing it was filled with gems. "You sure about this?" He closed the bag, looking over to her. He had expected her to run off with the money, yet she chose to give it back to them. "Well...thanks. I'm...not sure what to say, but...thank you." It was something of a novel experience, given he was used to dealing with people who wouldn't hesitate to screw him over if they felt they could get a buck out of it. He gave the kid a smile. "Really, thanks." He moved back to his food, taking a few bites before looking back towards the kid. "You know...you never really explained what that hourglass thing was. I mean...if you don't wanna talk about it, I get it, but we might run into some more of 'em, so it could be helpful to know what they are."

Michael couldn't help but frown as he watched the sack of what he assumed was money hit the counter, intended for the kid and not for him and Franklin. It was followed by the mysterious hourglass soon after. Eh...I guess I'll let the kid enjoy her money... Looking around the store, there was one item in particular that stood out. The Lon Lon milk, which the shopkeeper had given a bottle of to the girl they rescued to heal their injuries. He knew from experience how effective it was at healing, so it was definitely something they should pick up. "Hey, kid, pick up a bottle of that stuff. It's pretty useful." With that, he began to head out, the two exiting the store with Baba still following behind. It had taken some effort, but the rabbit-like creature seemed to be content with following the men around.

Soon after leaving the store, they heard a familiar voice calling out to them. Michael gave a slight wave towards Linkle, while Franklin gave her a nod. "Hey, what's up?"

As it turned out, a lot had been 'up' since they had left. Linkle and a few others had gone on a quest to a monster filled lake, something that sounded a little more exciting than the temple they had went to. Michael and Franklin spent some time introducing themselves to the newcomers that had returned with Linkle, as well as introducing them to Baba. "Yeah, he just...came out of nowhere. But he seems nice enough." He followed that with a general explanation of the puzzles they faced, and the things they saw on the way to and from the temple.

Soon enough, more and more of the group began returning to town, having completed quests of their own. Once everyone had returned, the pair and Baba made their way over to the guild hall. Given that Michael and Franklin had skipped the building when they first arrived in town, they were a little surprised to see the appearance of the guildmaster. The resemblance to the Master of Masters was uncanny, and part of Michael wanted to ask if they knew each other, although it didn't feel appropriate given the situation. After speaking to a woman who seemed to be in charge of keeping records on all the quests, he began his speech. It was rather straightforward- they had done enough to let them go after an 'F-rank' monster who, judging by the looks on the faces of their allies, was one of Galeem's champions they had to take down. He followed this with an invitation to a meal, something that the two were more than happy to accept. They hadn't eaten in several hours, and they were beginning to feel the effects of hunger, Michael especially.

Before he headed off to the free meal, though, there was something else that Michael wanted to see to. There were three loot boxes in front of them, a reward for one of the quests another group had gone off on. Walking up to them, Michael reached into his suit pockets and took out his wallet. This was one of the few places where his money would be something more than a useless paperweight. Looking into his wallet, he counted around $100 in cash. If he had access to an ATM, he wouldn't have any problem at all- after the Union Depository job, both he and Franklin had obscene amounts of money to their names- but despite this, the money he had on hand would be more than enough. Taking out three one-dollar bills, he placed each of them into the cash slots of the lootboxes, and stepped back, waiting for their rewards to appear.

The pink brazier indicated a straightforward hallway that led Michael and Franklin to fanciful door. Pushing it open revealed a small chamber, compared to the one they’d encountered before, with a royal palette. Vivid wooden walls gave way to brilliant purple curtains surrounding stained glass windows, through which beamed impossible sunlight. Their shoes tread across plush red carpet as their feet brought them to the far wall.

That wall played host to some sort of extravagant ball game. A number of colorful pegs were arrayed across a colorful background depicting scenic countryside. Above and below the field of pegs were two machines: the one at the top looked like some sort of dispenser, complete with miniature cannon, and the bucket apparatus at the bottom slid from left to right and back again. To the field’s right extended a sort of scoring system. Depicted in the top notch of the scoring system was another painting. The left, meanwhile, displayed a number of available balls, as well as a strange-looking unicorn behind the glass.

In front of the game, a single terminal rose from the floor. It sported just one stick, movable left and right only, and one button.

The two took several moments to observe their next puzzle. The room they were in was certainly fancy, and a stark contrast to the nearly empty room that the last puzzle took place in. The newest puzzle appeared to be some sort of ball game, although how it was meant to be completed was unknown to them. "Huh...it reminds me of pinball, sort of." Michael said, scratching his chin as he looked it over.

"Yeah, a little bit." Franklin squinted his eyes at the puzzle. Soon after they entered, a terminal rose from the floor with what had to be the controls to the puzzle. Looking around the room to make sure there was nothing he was missing, Franklin walked towards the terminal. "Looks easy enough." He turned back to Michael. "Well, you got the last one, so I'll get this one."

Michael shrugged. "Works for me."

Turning back to the game, Franklin grabbed the stick, moving it back and forth a bit to test it. It seemed to move the angle of the cannon, and trying to move it forward proved impossible. With no clue as to how the game was meant to be played, he decided to do what seemed to be the best option. Moving the cannon to the left, he pointed it straight down, and pressed the button.

The cannon launched a ball straightaway, firing the pearl-like sphere downward. When it struck a blue peg the ball bounced, destroying the peg in the process. It continued to bounced around, off the walls and other pegs, eliminating each one. Striking a blue one didn’t seem to do much, but when the ball hit a singular orange peg, it burst in a shower of sparkles and one of the lights on the right-side gauge lit up. A few seconds later, the ball disappeared through the bottom of the machine, not falling into the bucket. A low tone sounded out from the mechanism, and one of the balls on the left-side gauge went dark.

Franklin frowned as the ball disappeared, seemingly not accomplishing much. He still wasn't sure what the goal of the game was, but a few of the rules had been cleared up- striking the blue ones didn't do anything, but hitting orange ones seemed to be the right thing to do. There was also the matter of the bucket at the bottom of the stage, which, if he had to guess what would happen if he landed a ball in it, would either result in him winning the game or getting a lot of points. Either way, he assumed it would be a good outcome. With that in mind, Franklin angled the cannon towards the right side of the stage, and once the bucket started approaching, pushed the button.

The aimed shot bounced off the right wall without hitting any pegs and dropped neatly into the bucket. No points were added, and nor was the gauge on the right filled, but a glowing message appeared reading, ‘Free Ball!’ Sure enough, the count of balls on the left side didn’t go down.

"Huh." His theory was partly correct- it was something good, but it didn't win the game for him. Still, it was something to keep in mind. The only way he could see to win the game so far was to hit all the orange circles. While a few of them were seemingly out of reach of the cannon, he had an idea. Angling the cannon towards the right side once more, he aimed at one of the blue circles and fired, hoping to bounce the cannonball off it to hit the orange circles.

The man’s solid idea went into play, and a moment after it fired the ball pinged off the blue target. Its trajectory after that, however, was luck of the draw. It arced lazily over to narrowly miss the orange Franklin hoped for, bounced off two blues in quick succession, and clocked another blue and orange before hitting the wall and falling out the bottom.

Franklin frowned as he watched the ball fall off the stage. At least I got one... While the outcome wasn't what he had been hoping for, he now knew what he had to do. Taking a few moments to mentally plot out the likely trajectories of the ball, he began to angle the cannon. Over the span of about a minute, he fired off a multitude of projectiles, spread across every side of the stage. He attempted to maximize the amount of orange circles that he could hit with every ball, firing most of his projectiles off in an attempt to finish the puzzle for good.

With each attempt, he honed his aim. One after another, he struck the orange pegs and steadily filled up the right-hand gauge. Three times, twice on purpose and once by sheer luck, Franklin got the ball into the basket, and it saved his bacon. With the free ball granted by the last decisive score, he aimed the cannon and let loose at the final peg, exposed by its neighboring blues taken out by prior attempts. The game slowed down as the ball grew close, threatening to miss by a hair, but the marble struck home. Instantly rainbows filled the game, flashing along the sides and trailing behind the ball as it continued to bounce, and triumphant music resounded.

After the confetti stopped flying, a slot opened up in the bottom of the machine, like in a crane game. Into the tray plopped a painting of the game’s goofy-looking unicorn, a memento of the anachronistic carnival game and a testament to Franklin’s victory.

Michael, who had been watching with passive interest for the most part, jumped back slightly as the music began to play. "Ahh! What the hell?"

Franklin let out a chuckle at Michael's surprise, grinning as rainbows filled the stage. "Now that's what victory sounds like." As the tray opened up, he reached down to grab the painting, holding it up to inspect it. "That's one more painting. Guess we're almost done."

"Well, if the kid got the others...then yeah, we're almost done. Let's put it with the others for now.

The spider, despite its terrifying appearance, fell easily to Michael and Franklin's combined firepower. The two quickly moved on to the next room, weapons at the ready. Fortunately for them, there didn't seem to be any more enemies there. Lowering their weapons somewhat, they moved on to the braziers in the center of the room. They could see someone, presumably the person they needed to rescue, stuck in the middle of the multi-colored fires. Franklin stepped forward and tried to get past them, but the fires spread out to block his path, somehow not burning him. "Woah!" He shouted, taking a step back in surprise. "What the hell?"

Michael instinctively raised his Uzi as the fires shot up, only lowering it once he saw Franklin was unharmed. "You alright?" He asked, and Franklin nodded in response. "Alright...well, this isn't the weirdest thing I've seen, but I don't know how we're supposed to get past this..."

Almost as soon as he finished speaking, the fire began to move. The two took several steps back as the fire began to shape itself into several vaguely foxlike creatures, dancing in the fire. Their singing caused the two to step back further, keeping a tight grip on their guns. However, the creatures just continued to dance around the fire, leaving the two alone. They lowered their weapons somewhat, sharing a look. "What the fuck was that?"

Franklin shook his head. "Something fucked up, that's what. But it sounds like this is how we're gonna get past that fire."

"I...I guess, yeah." Michael looked around the room. There were four doors, opposite the four braziers. "Probably in one of these rooms...let's try the green one."

The room across from the green brazier was small, and empty save for the objects in the middle of the room. The monoliths and the large flower between them drew Michael and Franklin towards them. As they got closer, they could see the writing on the flower. Michael squinted at it, attempting to read it. "Puzzle is five...is win, is you, is...winner? The fuck does that mean?" He turned to look at Franklin, who shrugged in response. Before he could question it further, drawings began to appear on the first monolith. Flowers appeared, and when they fell apart they left either words or objects in their wake. Once they stopped, they were left with the white rabbit-looking thing that Michael assumed was "Baba", a flag, three rocks that blocked Baba's path, and walls on both sides where several words lied. Michael took a step forward, looking it over. "So...huh, I guess this is the puzzle it mentioned."

Franklin took a moment to look around the room, noting the number of monoliths. "There's five of the...tablets or whatever, so maybe we have to do five puzzles to win. That's what it said, right?"

Michael nodded. "Yeah, that's what it said..." He crossed his arms, looking over the puzzle. It seemed simple enough, but there was no way he could see to control the puzzle. If I can just get it to move to the right a little... As soon as the thought crossed his mind, Baba moved to the right. Huh? He thought about moving it again, and Baba moved to the left. Oh. Well, that works. Looking over the puzzle again, Michael moved Baba to the right again, sending it into a rock, which it began to push out of the way. Once the obstacle was removed, he sent the rabbit creature towards the flag.

The moment Baba touched the flag, golden sparkles flitted across the monolith's surface, and the chalk faded away. One of the five petals surrounding the central dais fell away, leaving only four left. Without further ado, drawings began to appear on the second monolith. True to the friends' conclusions, it appeared that five solved puzzles would be necessary to earn a reward, presumably one of the paintings the flagellant fox spirits desired.

As soon as the puzzle was completed, Michael moved to the next monolith, watching as a new puzzle took shape. However, once it was finished, he frowned as he looked it over. It seemed impossible, the flag stuck on the other end of a wall, and moving Baba into it proved that it was, indeed, impassible. There seemed to be no way to win the puzzle, as the wall stopped him. Stop...wait. Michael's eyes turned to the set of words in reach- WALL IS STOP. After a few seconds, he smiled as the nature of the puzzle became clear to him. Walls stopped him...but what if he changed the rules?

Baba soon moved towards the set of words, pushing the 'IS' out of the way. Moving up, Michael's theory was proven correct as he passed through the wall with ease. Moving onto the flag, however, didn't end the puzzle. The reason was soon made apparent- the letters 'FLAG', 'IS', and 'WIN' were scattered around the room. It only took a few seconds to gather them together, and send Baba back towards the flag.

Michael's clever deduction rendered the second puzzle solved. On cue, a second petal fell away and the second monolith's scrawlings faded. The friends' expectant look toward the third revealed another scenario already taking shape.

This puzzle was...different. Where one would expect walls, there were instead rows of flags. In addition, Baba was seemingly nowhere to be found. In its place, was a segment of wall. After staring at it for a moment, Michael realized that the word for 'WALL' was in the place where 'BABA' usually was. Indeed, the segment of wall moved when Michael mentally commanded it to, just like Baba did. From there, solving the puzzle was easy, as Michael had gotten the grasp of how they worked. He removed the 'IS' from 'FLAG IS STOP', then moved the words to create 'FLAG IS WIN' and sent the piece of wall into the nearest flag.

Without delay, the fourth puzzle constructed itself for Michael to turn his attention to. Only two petals remained on the central dais locking it in place.

Michael frowned as he looked over the next puzzle. The path was blocked by two walls of skulls, and there was no obvious way to get past them or make them harmless. Scratching his chin, he looked at the only words available to him- 'WALL IS STOP'. His mind immediately went back to the last puzzle- while Baba was in no position to reach the flag, the walls were. Quickly, he put his plan into place. He removed the 'IS' from 'WALL IS STOP', and brought the 'WALL' outside, replacing 'BABA' with it. When he moved next, every piece of wall shifted with him, but he was able to get a piece of the wall to touch the flag.

The final monolith came to life as Michael's wall tripped the fourth puzzle's flag. This time, the whole surface changed color, taking on a bluish appearance evocative of the ocean depths. This, the last of the puzzles, would open the final lock once concluded, presumably giving the friends their reward.

The last puzzle, besides the oceanic theme, introduced a few new objects to the board. At this point, though, it didn't concern Michael too much. He felt that he understood how these puzzles worked well enough, and solving this one wouldn't be any harder than the others. After pushing the first rock out of the way, he took a moment to consider his options. While he couldn't get past the wall, he could use the 'AND' to take control of the crab outside and finish the puzzle. That would mean getting rid of the skull somehow. Hm...maybe I could sink it? He didn't exactly know what 'sink' would do, but maybe he could use it to get rid of the skull. First, he changed 'STAR IS SINK' to STAR IS PUSH', and pushed the star onto the skull. He then went back and changed it back to 'SINK'. As soon as he did, both the star and the skull disappeared, causing Michael to pump his fist in celebration. The next step was easy, pushing 'AND' and 'CRAB' to create 'CRAB AND BABA IS YOU', giving him control of the crab outside, which he used to touch the flag.

This time, when the flag got touched, the entire room began to shudder. As the fifth petal fell away, the monoliths retracted unto the floor, and the central dais rose. Its hollow inside, open on the direction facing the door, help a paint that depicted Baba amidst a hurricane of obstacles and words. Even though Franklin didn't step it to help, Michael's wits had proved enough to triumph over this puzzle.

The minute Michael laid his hand on the painting, however, the room started to quake once again, but far more violently this time. The monoliths slid up and down at random, and waves of black pixellation surged across the room. Drawn flowers bloomed, withered, and disintegrated in the air, their generation increasing in speed and intensity until they collected together above the raised dias. Then, with great force, the flower-singularity burst apart like a hatching egg. Onto the plinth dropped a white rabbit creature in all his three-dimensional glory. Still and silent, Baba peered down at the men below. Not a trace of red could be seen his eyes.

Once Michael had secured the painting, he moved back as fast as he could to avoid the sudden chaos the room was thrown into. The two continued to move backwards, trying to avoid the most dramatic effects. They could only watch as flowers bloomed and disintegrated, eventually coming together and bursting apart all at once. After they finished shielding their eyes, their eyes went wide as they saw what had appeared. Franklin turned to Michael first. "Is that..."

Michael gave a silent nod, taking a moment to hand the painting over to Franklin before stepping forward. Staring up at the plinth, he spoke. "Baba? Is that you?"

When he heard his name, Baba looked at Michael, but without much comprehension. Based on its lack of responsiveness, there didn't appear to be reason to believe he harbored near-human intelligence. Nevertheless, Baba eventually hopped down from the top of the plinth. Smooth and almost featureless save for his eyes, stubby legs, and equally stubby ears, he was a strange but rather endearing beast. After a moment or two, he happened to look at the painting Franklin currently held. The sight of himself triggered some sort of response, like a dog seeing itself in a mirror. A sketchy flower bloomed in midair above Baba's head, leaving behind a cube with BA/BA inscribed on each face. A moment later the word cube faded away, like chalk being erased.

Wholly unperturbed by whatever just happened, Baba looked away and started walking toward the exit.

The two were silent as Baba walked away. Judging by its reaction, Michael assumed that it didn't possess human-like intelligence. He didn't know what to make of the word-cube appearing and disappearing, though. Maybe it could be used like it was in the puzzles? He didn't know, but that was something they could worry about later. Nodding to Franklin, the two followed Baba out of the room and into the central chamber.

"Put that down for now. We'll get the other paintings first." Franklin nodded, putting the painting down near the entrance of the green room.

"Well, that's one. I'm guessing we're gonna need three more?"

"Yeah." Michael looked at the braziers. "Let's say...the pink room next?"

"Don't see why not. Hey, where do you think the kid went?"

Michael paused. He had completely forgotten about her. "I...I dunno. We'll run into her later, let's just go and see what's going on in the next room." The two began walking towards the room across from the pink brazier, but as they approached, Michael stopped and turned back towards Baba. "Uh...you probably can't understand me, but you can come along if you want."

The shopkeeper was quick to repeat what he had said to the kid- a missing person's case, apparently. Before they could ask about the specifics, however, the kid in question turned to glare in their direction before rushing outside, leaving the two criminals in her wake. "What the- hey!" Michael shouted out to her in vain. He was too late, and in a matter of seconds she had ran off far away from the store. The two shared a look, both confused by this turn of events. "What the hell was that about?"

Franklin stepped outside and looked into the distance, where the kid was leaping over people's heads to get out of town as soon as possible. "Whatever it is, she doesn't want us getting it." He turned back to Michael. "So, we going after her or what?"

"I...ah, shit, alright. Let's go!" With that, the two ran out of the store in a desperate attempt to catch up with the kid. While they ran as fast as they could, the kid was much faster than them. Their hesitation beforehand had given the kid a decent head start, and they could barely keep up with her as they ran through town, towards the gate. Eventually, she got on her scooter and drove away, leaving the two in her wake. Franklin stood at the gate and watched her drive off before Michael appeared behind him, breathing heavily. "Damn it, she's fast..."

Franklin eventually snapped out of it, realizing that they were letting her get away. "Shit, we gotta go! Get on the bike, I'll trail her." He ran towards the group's assembled vehicles, hopping on the Wario bike and starting it up.

"Yeah, just give me a sec!" Michael ran past Franklin to the monster truck, hopping up to the door and reaching inside to retrieve Needles' machete, sticking it on his belt before hopping onto the back of Franklin's bike. "Alright, let's go!"

Franklin sped off, trying to follow Hat Kid's scooter. They drove a decent distance away from her, close enough to see where she was going but far enough that she couldn't try to attack them, although they hoped that whatever this hourglass was, it wouldn't drive the kid to the point of attacking her teammates in order to keep it from them. The bike allowed them to keep up easily, at least for the opening stretch. As the terrain got rougher, Franklin had to resort to some creative driving to avoid the obstacles. Despite a few close encounters with wild animals, they had managed to eventually trail the kid to some sort of temple, where they had stopped off judging by the scooter parked outside. Parking the bike, the two dismounted and headed inside, weapons at the ready. There was no telling what was inside, but it was probably dangerous.

Their suspicions were confirmed as they walked inside. One of the first things they noticed was the demented spider creature. Looking up, it seemed that the kid had snuck past it somehow, and had moved on to the next room. They could see no way past it, though, which left only one option. Raising their weapons, the two took a few steps closer before they both fired several shots at the creature, Michael firing his Uzi and Franklin firing his pistol.
