  • A delayed offensive by the Itheraen Volunteers begins on February 23rd. Seronan military officers begged the Itheraens not to throw their lives away needlessly in the meat grinder of Fetrograd. General Alasd Stratos ordered his men to enter Fetrograd, the thunderous symphony of Karumi field guns echoing in the distance. The 28,000 strong Corps of Itheraens were watched with a certain amazement by Seronan soldiers as they marched--six abreast right into the ruined city of Fetrograd to begin their assault.

  • In a meeting at the Hotel Sobot in Tarist, the national committee of the Kalpian Worker Party voted 40–9 to hold its next yearly meeting in Arsech, the capital. The city of Marneit had also made a bid to host the gathering. The committee also confirmed the date for the convention to open on the 10th of July.
  • More than 150 bystanders were injured in the Confluence suburb of Saint-Oust, Violette, while watching a fire at a warehouse block. Six warehouses, including several that had vats of alcohol, burned down in a fire that started at 8:00 that morning. By 4:00, the flames reached the alcohol and the first of several explosions rained debris upon the crowd.

  • With instructions received from Argentine via Rigour, General Harkins of the Imperial Tarantese Army accepts peace with the Mauwanti Empire. Although it is a White Peace, the war was considered to be long overdue to be finished. Cavalry officers in Argentine rode their steeds up and down the city streets of Argentine, leading the Tarantese painter Malcolm Bren to paint his Victory from Argentine on this day.

  • The February Offensive continues. The Osladian Army, having advanced to the Northern front around Kreogen, have decided that they must press on to capture Kreogen from the enemy. The Osladians were weary from nearly a month of constant offensive operations. Rations were questionably low, ammunition equally so. The fall of Kreogen however would be a massive blow to Zellonia. With casualties surpassing 20,000 now, the Osladians figured that if their men were to die, they should not do so in vain.

  • The first stops of the Multi-Continental Railroad in the Tsardom of Radena is finished between the capital Glavnaya and Sloslia. The 189 kilometer stretch of road is built over mostly plains and flat lands. The next link in the chain from Sloslia to Zamocin, nearly 225 of uneaven and hilly terrain is expected to take three times as long to finish.

Global Economy Roll 3 (-1 to Kapian Market Deregulation Act)

February 15th-22nd

February 15th
Half way through the month, nearly 20,000 Osladians lie dead. The city of Kreogen is a mess of wrecked stone, concrete and ash. With orders to halt the offensive if casualties surpass 24,000, General Gregory Yakovich of Voskreyra Army Group North needed to decide whether to make the final push, or to halt and sit on the gains his army had made. The February Offensive had ground to a halt just outside of Kreogen, where the Zellonians entrenched positions had become especially problematic. In the South, 16,500 men--none of them Zellonians--had started a deliberate offensive of their own. Additionally, General Yakovich received orders from several of his field commanders that many of the men were near the breaking point. Kreogen was less than two and a half kilometers away.

  • The Tsardom of Radena successfully purchases fuel and ammunition from foreign markets for it's beleaguered navy. Shells and coal are sent to the Northern Coasts so that it's navy, mostly defunct and ramshackle, can at least be functional.
    - [Event: Tsardom of Radena receives +12% Navy Supply & Logistics.]

February 17th-20th
  • In the south, the 10,000 Radenans and 6,500 men of the I Memoital Corp begin their offensive. Less than actual training of these soldiers and more the fact that each one of them has a rifle and is properly trained, the Osladians are slightly off put. The Radenans and Memoitals work autonomously, but their goals are the same. They race through the Kreogen forest, emerging from the belt line of trees and laying down heavy covering fire while advancing at break neck speed. A trio of M1899 Prager machine guns set up and manned by Osladians slows the advance, cutting men down like stalks of wheat. One Osladian gunner, so distraught by the carnage is pulled from his machine gun nest (a neat burrow of dirt with the gun nestled along the husk of a felled tree) and replaced by one of his comrades. By the morning of the 18th, the thinly defended Southern Line was on the verge of breaking. Memoital and Radenan soldiers lie dead en masse, but the cost to the Osladians--many of whom had been transferred North for the February Offensive-- was equally as costly.
  • A platoon of Osladians along a neat lip of earth were caught unawares by an entire regiment of Radenans. They took no prisoners, slaughtering the half dozing Osladians in their very foxholes. "They're breaking through," a man shouted over and over. But it was on the road they saw the pristine uniforms of the Kalpians, their rifles clean of soot and dust. With a hole nearly a hundred yards across empty of man or machine gun, the Kalpians fell into line at their place at the front. This was not a purely defensive maneuver. Where the Kalpians won, they pushed. Where they lost, they relented, regrouped and attacked again.

The Kalpian Republican Army here was at it's apex. While the Radenans were a rag tag bunch of improvisational soldiers at home in the cold and the Memoitals well trained but inexplicably outgunned and outnumbered, the average Kalpian performed heroically. Small maneuvers at the squad level left Radenans bewildered. Shootouts in the Krepina Forest left the Memoitals reeling, and falling back just after dusk.

The Kalpian 23rd did not relinquish in the cold black of the night. While the Memoital's regrouped and the Radenans sang songs and ate, the Kalpian 1st and 2nd Brigade advanced in a sinister pinnacle movement. Muzzle flashes snapped to life. Kalpian soldiers moved in unison, paused, threw a grenade into a dugout and moved on. By the morning, 1,100 Memoitals had surrendered. 650 Radenans were dead. 24 Kalpians had died, 2 by friendly fire.

  • The Dragon Emperor in the Imperium of Hiron delivers a speech to a crowd of 5,500 in Senryu, Hiron. ""My people, I come before you today to decry the foolhardy actions of the Veletian Empire! When before, I thought they would bring true justice to the Governor of Veletian Settumu, Droulez, they merely stripped him of his rank and assigned him to a civilian position! This is not true justice! This man oversaw the peddling our women, of Kikitomi women, and despite the Imperium's issues with the Kingdom of Meung, Meungese women, against their will! None of his subordinates received True Justice either! All of these men should've hung for their crimes against the Hironese People! This is an affront to all of us in Settumu, and I shall not stand for it! They think themselves to be so mighty that the persecution and denigration of our women is not a crime that requires the death penalty!? Well, today, I send word to the Veletian Empire: Allow Droulez and his accomplices to be tried and judged under Hironese law, or face severe repercussions! I give you my word as the Dragon Emperor, that will we have these sons of bitches brought to heel! To the Imperium!"

  • During December and January, an agreement between the Kingdom of Zellonia and the Tsardom of Radena is finished in Berolf, Zellonia. Initially, the Zellonians wished to admit nearly half of a hundred thousand Radenan volunteers--mostly Daichidan and Khümi minorities, who were promised citizenship after the war--into Zell as the Radeni Volunteer Corps. In exchange, the Zellonians would pay a hefty sum of cash in exchange. A more harsh than normal winter stalled negotiations as the Radenan diplomats had difficulty reaching Berolf, considering there no explicitly paved roads in the region. The agreement was thus diluted. For a paltry $1,000,000 the Radenan Volunteer Corps would be made up of 10,000, mostly Khümi and Radenan soldiers, carrying Kirov.86 breach loaders--rifles dated even further than the Zellonian Z.88. They made way through Sloslia to Berolf at the beginning of February and arrived at the front on February 14th.

  • On Lake Mathilde, inventors Wolfheim Hamptmann and Suri Hamptmann attract a crowd of 300+ to test their skyship invention. The Hamptmann's father Count Otto von Hamptmann had been devoting his energies to the design of large rigid-framed airships since his retirement from the Tyro-Redanian Army in 1890. In 1898 he established the Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Luftschifffahrt. The company had a subscribed capital of $800,000, of which Hamptmann contributed $300,000: the remainder was provided by various industrialists, including $100,000 contributed by Hermann Meckleburg, whose company provided the aluminum framework of the airship. The company first constructed a large floating shed to contain the airship. This arrangement was decided on firstly because Haptmann believed that landing the ship over water would be safer and secondly because the floating shed, moored only at one end, would turn so that it was always facing into the wind.

The HSH.1 was constructed using a cylindrical framework with 16 wire-braced polygonal transverse frames and 24 longitudinal members covered with smooth surfaced cotton cloth. Inside was a row of 17 gas cells made from rubberized cotton. The airship was steered by forward and aft rudders and propulsion was provided by two 10.6 kW (14.2 hp) Imperial TR-1 internal-combustion engines, each driving two propellers mounted on the envelope. Pitch control was by use of a 100 kg (220 lb) weight suspended beneath the hull which could be winched forward or aft to control its attitude. Passengers and crew were carried in two 6.2 m (20 ft) long aluminum gondolas suspended forward and aft.

Construction of the airship began on 17 December 1898, when the first sections of the framework were delivered from Meckleburg's factory and was completed by 27 January 1900. Inflation of the gasbags took place during June and the airship was first taken out of the shed on the evening of 11 October, with Hauptmann Hans Bartsch von Sigsfeld of the Tyro-Redanian Observation Battalion at the controls. The first civilian testing with the Haptmann brothers at the controls took place on February 3rd.

The first flight revealed serious structural deficiencies in the framework, and an attempt to remedy this was made by incorporating the walkway between the gondolas into a rigid keel structure. At the same time the moveable weight was increased to 150 kg (330 lb), the aft rudders moved from either side of the envelope to below it, and an elevator fitted below the nose.

  • The Pinnacle Programme is passed in the Veletian Parliament. A comprehensive economic reform authored by Veletian Minister of Economics Marcelet Gavreau, the Pinnacle Programme seeks to partner with Veletian private industries and sponsor technological and economic innovation. Given the immense scope of the Programme, it's immediate success would not be seen for some time, it's effects undoubtedly trickling in through the next months and years. Plans assisted by the national government begin allocating aid for railways and new buildings, as well as colonial infrastructure in the coming months.
  • In the Zello-Osladian War, the February Offensive is started by the Osladians, opening up the hostilities with a thunderous barrage of 42 field guns. 45,000 men total are committed to the assault, hoping to break through the line and encircle the Zellonian 6th Army under General George Harrison.

  • The Siege of Fetrograd begins in the Karumi War. The second largest industrial city in Serona, the Karumi 4th Army under Prince Vladimir Vatoskov, encircles the city and unleashes a devastating night and day barrage; sparing no quarter. Civilians: women, children and the elderly are mauled.
  • An agreement between the Tyro-Redanian Empire and the Osladian Empire concludes with the sell of 100 M1899 Prager machine guns. Initially for $100,000; savvy Osladian diplomats arranged for their purchase overlooking a field test, skimming nearly $20,000 dollars off for a price of $80,000.

  • The first Continental and Meungese immigrants begin entering the Imperium of Hiron, reacting to the loosened immigration laws. The government has offered a three month stipend in order to pay for these workers, many of whom are scientific and academic leaders seeking new opportunities. Seronan physicist Casimir Świętosławski is among the most important figures to emigrate to Hiron, citing the war as his reason. He immediately joins the Yufutsu School of Chemistry, with a position expected at the Senryu International University when it opens next year.

  • The Siege of Fetrograd continues. Along the Northeastern Front, Seronan soldiers dig in, hoping to hold fighting outside of the city. While across the left, the front has flexed so as to let the Karumi soldiers break open into the flat lands there. The Seronans have given their flank to protect the city.

  • The Itheraen Volunteers reach the Seronan Front. They enter the city of Fetrograd during heavy bombardment and join their brethren there at the front lines. Their impact on the war is uncertain, but they are about to receive their first taste of combat. "We're here to retake Wietr," one of them told a Seronan commander.

"Go right ahead," he told them. The Itheraen's quickly learned the better of their idealistic mistake, set down their rifles and got to digging.

The government set up it's provisional capital at Zhumei, and was led by King Yi Ja-chun, a 28 year old former Gojong emigrant from Hiron. Ja-chun's regime was pro-Hironese and immediately requested an embassy to be established in Zhumei.

  • The Kingdom of Zellonia, fighting to hold a meagerly held line during the Osladian February Offensive, sends a diplomat to the Marnish Kingdom to appeal for aid. The Marnish Foreign Minister Lennart Oesch refused to let the Zellonian diplomat on the premise, instead sending a military police to tell him. "We are aware the Zellonians on the verge of collapse. We will not be accepting refugees."

  • After action reports of the events of the night of February 14th are, at best, inconclusive. The Fallou Naval Dockyard at Sund, Veletian Settumu was home to the Flotte Veletian Settumu. At approximately 0413 hours, the destroyer VX Amourstar was returning from a night time patrol when her crew spotted flashes of gunfire occurring near the shore of one of many small islands near Sund.

A party was sent to shore, where they found three officers of the Gendarmerie Colonialé, all dead, but none by gunshot. A fourth officer was found critically wounded. A search of the area revealed that the intruder was still present. Sailor Edwin Mathieu, in his interview by the Kikitomi military police was thus: "We thought perhaps a tiger had been loose on the island. There was no way a man could have done that, to another human." Of a shore party of eleven, Sailor Edwin Mathieu all stayed close to the shore until another squad of Gendarme's showed up in a skiff, more heavily armed. With the Amourstar circling the island, her spotlights turning the island bright, the hunt for this "loose tiger," lasted only hours.

The man--who was not identified--was shot and presumably killed while swimming out into the ocean. The gendarmes reported that at one point he visibly dove beneath the water. His body did not resurface. An extended search of the island eventually revealed a small alcove where the man was apparently living. Among the small amount of gear there was an assortment of entirely up to date schematics of Veletian naval bases, coastal patrol times and pictures of colonial garrisons and their troop strength. No body was recovered, save for the three Veletian officers who were killed.

In a hastily conducted interview in a Sund military hospital, Lieutenant Emmanuel Auch reported one very interesting fact. Having suspected the man of potential saboteur activity at Sund, he and four officers followed him, then attempted to apprehend him. He resisted. Lieutenant Auch believed the man to be Hironese.

  • The Radeni Volunteer Corps finally arrive at the front. Led by perhaps the most experienced commander in the entire war, General Leventy Gerasimov, the 10,000 strong force almost immediately sacrificed what power it had in the conflict by attempting to exact hit and run attacks on the Osladian positions.

Photograph of the RVC in the Zellonian Western Front, 1900

The first attack on a defended position was ordered by the 2nd Platoon of the 1st Brigade of the Radenan Volunteer Force, a 40-man strong force attempted to navigate just north of Kreogen to attack a thinly held position of Osladians. The rampant return fire was unlike anything any soldier in the history of warfare had truly experienced. Two men, Vasily Markov and Ilya Alexandrovich survived to tell the tale of the firepower that met them in the frozen February air.

    Zello-Osladian War, February 1900
  • The Kalpian Republic deploys the 23rd Infantry Division under Gotthard Ulli Knef, who arrive at Xerotith on February 15th. The infantry division--part of the formerly proud Kalpian Republican Army--faces some ridicule from the Osladian soldiers there. The Sladic soldiers, once seen as a second rate army, consider themselves pulling their own weight while the Kalpians landed at an Osladian held city and have done little since the war started. They marched toward the front with all due haste.

In the Kalpian Republic, the Metropolitan Heavy Industries company finishes a 180 kilometer stretch of rail through several towns from Tarist to Leikarp, connecting and finishing the entirety of the nation's circular rail network. It is now possible, were one so inclined, to get on a passenger locomotive in Arsech, and ride it all the way to the North to Liubeth, then South through Tarist, Leikap and back to Arsech. Much of the rural countryside remains unconnected.

January 2nd-3rd
The 63rd Light Brigade under Brigadier General Larenz had held the capital of Zeel, and it's monarch--King James Conrad--for 36 hours now. During the early hours of January 2nd, an additional 12 landing craft pulled up to the quiet shores of Zeel and began unloading field guns. Passing Zellian soldiers noticed. Two opened fire while another ran for the alarm. By 1140 the entire 3rd "Zeel" Infantry Division had been alerted and within hours began converging on the city. The 63rd Light Brigade began deploying defensive measures in the Majora District and fighting began on January 2nd late in the evening.

The Zellonians were at a lose-lose situation. The 3rd "Zeel" Infantry Division. The 3rd Zeel was the most well equipped of the entire Zellonian Army, with nearly 1 out of 2 men equipped with a rifle. There was no escalation, the 63rd Light Brigade put up a spirited defense from the first shots, and the Zellonians ruthlessly cut them off, took possession of the lightly guarded field guns deposited on the beach and cut the already short supplied Kalpians off in the city proper.

The Battle for Zeel, 1900

By the end of the 2nd, Kalpians were down the majority of their ammunition. KR.99 rifles lay discarded and close quarters fighting was at a premium. Brigadier General Larenz thought briefly of executing King James, but understood the political ramifications of assassinating a head of state. By the morning of the third of January, Kalpians were surrendering in the dozens. On the morning of the third, Brigadier General Larenz himself was taken captive.

The Zellians had a choice. They could inter the Kalpians for the remainder of the war, execute them as commandos attempting to potentially assassinate their head of state, or return them to the Kalpians in exchange for political leniency perhaps.
- [Event: The remnants of the 63rd Light Brigade are taken captive. Their fate is in the hands of the Kingdom of Zellonia. This requires an IC Response.]]

January 4th-11th
An interesting point of the Zello-Osladian War is often the very strange tactics used by both sides. The Zellonians, in superior defensive positions did not seek to outmaneuver the Osladians. The Osladians however, seemed content in continually butting their hands against the Zellonian defensive fortifications over and over and over. On the morning of the 4th, half a hundred Osladian field guns opened up for a thirty-six minute barrage.

The Osladian offensive begins. 22,000 men go up over constructed snow, mud and dirt embankments against the Zellonian 8th Army. Men of the 2nd Voskreya Division sustain a breakthrough between two Zellonian infantry divisions on the 7th of January. Casualties mount at 4,200 men. Fighting intensifies.

Osladian soldiers, minutes before the January Offensive, 1900

On the 9th of January, soldiers of the 2nd Voskreya reach the Zellonian rear guard, finding field kitchens and first aid stations. The Zellonians fail to put up fierce resistance due to a lack of rifles for their soldiers. On the 10th and 11th, heavy night fighting occur where unarmed Zellonians scour the frozen battlefield, picking up Otto.89 rifles and equipping themselves. A game of cat and mouse occurs where Osladians fire at targets moving in the darkness. 127 friendly fire casualties are reported between the 9th and 18th of January.

January 12th-18th
On the 12th of January, the Zellonian Army sends the 2nd "Jovington" Division into combat as a minor offensive at the behest of General Hawthorne Kenway, a gloryhound who believed he could drive a wedge between the Osladian salient and Army Group North.

The 13th and 14th of January earned the name the Black Weekend, as 6,123 men of the 7,000 strong 2nd "Jovington" Division are are wounded or killed in the Zellonian Counteroffensive. The southern front is now threatening to fall a part.

The Imperium of Hiron, in their foreign embassy in Confluence, Veletia, immediately demand the extradition of General Droulez to Shenryu to stand trial there. The diplomatic pressure for Veletia is marginal, but present--as public opinion of the Kikitomi has turned dour with local garrisons reportedly turning their ire on the locals. Not handing him over to the Hironese could lead to a sour political situation there, while handing him over could anger the Gendarmerie even further.

They are spotted and attacked by the Zellonian 4th Light Fleet (1 CA, 4 CL, 1 DD).

The ZRN Gathering Storm enacts dutiful revenge on the Kalpian defenders. It's 4-10" guns sinking the Kalpian KRN Kronprinz after only six volleys. The Gathering Storm wreaks havoc on the Kalpian formation, sinking two of the three freighters before suddenly being hit by a torpedo. The Continent, December, 1899

December

December 1st-7th
Battle of Kreogen (1899)
The greatest enemy of the Zello-Osladian War was neither the man standing across the front nor the rifle in his arms, but the frigid frost and blithering snowfall that picked up. By the end of November, a total of five and a half inches of snow now snaked it's way across the Zellonian flat lands. The entire front line, stretching through the city of Kreogen, held by the infamous Memoital I Corps. The front quickly stretched to the entire of Zellonia's length, running to the Marnish Mountains in the North to the half frozen waters of the Zeelian Sea to the South.

Zellonian Winter of 1899

On December 1st, the soldiers of Voskreya Army Group North received their orders. "On the 5th Day of the December, you will be tasked with destroying entrenched Zellonian positions and achieving a breakthrough." That day however, would have to wait. As at 0900 hours, the Zellonians--in the very same front--the 8th Army under General Hawthorne, began their offensive. 40 Zellonian field guns opened up, a destructive rain of fire that was quickly answered by a superior amount of Osladian field guns.

Private Merrick Daniels of the 2nd Jovington Division remembers the day, in an interview in 1903 from his memoir Through the Blood and Snow: "There were whistles. Hundreds of whistles from the commanding sergeants. Most of us didn't even have guns. They told us. 'Across the field. Engage in hand to hand. Find a weapon. Take it from the enemy, if you have to.' It was madness. Absolute madness. I lost, I lost a lot of friends that day. Sent to their death without much of a chance. Sent to their death without a rifle."

The Zellonian Offensive takes the Osladians by storm, who don't quite anticipate an attack by the Zellonians in the harsh weather. Two entire infantry divisions are sent forward: the 2nd Jovington and the 2nd Arrington divisions. 20,000 men, only 6,000 of them are carrying rifles. Still, unprepared Osladian positions are ransacked, but by 1215 hours they begin to offer resistance as they find their feet. General Hawthorne was out for blood. The Osladian breastworks allowed direct enfilade fire, and Hawthorne ordered the offensive continue well into the 6th and 7th day. His orders from Zellonian General Command in Zeel were the following: "If possible push through the southern flank and acquire new rifles as needed. Do not commit yourself to any single battle we can’t let the Osladians gain more land." [PM from LordZell]

The Osladians were back on their heels. They resisted, but even static rifle fire had it's limitations. With orders not to commit to any single battle (offensive), General Hawthorne called off the offensive after pushing only 19 kilometers. At the end of the 7th day, over 13,000 Zellonians had been killed. Most of them died without ever a chance to find a rifle and return fire. By nightfall, their corpses would freeze in the very position they died in. General Hawthorne was a glory seeker, and he had sent men to die looking for it. Whether or not stopping an Osladian offensive he didn't know was coming was among that repertoire, only history would tell.

The Zellonian Offensive ends, December 1st-7th, 1899

December 8th
While transporting a pair of merchant freighters to Xerotith to Voskreya--a measly 24 kilometers--the armored cruiser ZRN Gathering Storm and two light cruisers happen upon Osladian freighters and their three destroyer escort. The Battle of the Coast lasts a sobering two and a half hours. The ZRN Gathering Storm sinking the Osladian destroyer OIN Zhutkiy in a single barrage, while the Zellonian light cruisers cut off and sank the OIN Gromkiy. The OIN Maleev turned and fled, the captain giving a much different account of the action when he made port in Voskreya.

December 13th
In Veletian Settumu, the trial of Governor Droulez is finished and he is removed from power, instead put into a civilian role. The trial, which garnered front page news back in Confluence, is lauded as a giant success by the monarch and her civilian administration. Morale--and trust--in "The Heads Back Home," in far away colonies such as Cotê d'Or, as well as in Veletian Settumu, where the military hierarchy there was fiercely loyal, is shaken. With conditions often questionable at best, local garrisons feel as though the monarchy could have turned it's head. Not only was Droulez fondly remembered abroad, but a seething editorial in Le Patriote characterizes him as almost a father like figure to hundreds of cadets who had been placed under his command. "The allegations of a sex trafficking ring," the editorial writes, "are undoubtedly the doing of an administration that has lost faith in it's most able bodied commanders."
[Event: Veletian Gendarmerie loses 6% Morale.].

December 14th
An additional 14,400 Z.88 rifles are finished by Guntherson & Co. in Vorl. They're sent to the front lines immediately.

December 15th
The Empire of Tara sends out a request for a new field cannon. Vulcan Foundries promises a prototype within 10 months, while the Imperial Dockyards & Arsenal promises a prototype within 6 months.

December 16th
The 3rd Colonial Rifles dispatch to Jardin, Counties Palatine on garrison duty. The people there are scared, proud and full of courage. Brigadier Sir Thomas de Lacy, CGM, RAM and Double Bar, in command, he's notified early on the morning of the 16th of an incoming Mauwanti scouting force. Dutifully, he wards off a runner to Harkins at White Haven.

What comes next is again the masterful deception of the Mauwanti. A few dozen riders meander around, with members of the 3rd Colonial Rifles well entrenched. For a second time Sir Thomas de Lacy refuses an inquiry as to whether to send a runner, grumbling: "The boy Harkins has enough to deal with from the Navy and Her Majesty, I'm sure." At 1125 hours, a second Mauwanti raiding party is seen but retreats after fire from 4th Company's entrenchment to the Northeast.

Entrenched soldiers of the 3rd Colonial Rifles

At 1340 hours the Mauwanti return, in force. 6,600 raiders in all--mostly on foot with some mounted in an attempted flanking maneuver. At 1346 the first field battery opened up, and Brigadier de Lacy gave a "fire at will" order. The Mauwanti charged, with no apparent concern for their own safety. They closed to twenty yards before the withering fire from the assembled riflemen clouded the battlefield in so much smoke from the discharge of their rifles that it was impossible to see which direction to run.

By 1450, 3,800 Mauwanti and 290 Colonials had been killed. 1 Field Gun, fired until the barrel burned red, was considered "beyond use."

December 16th
The Mauwanti approach White Haven with a shaman. He's nearly killed by a rifleman on duty, then taken before Harkins in the city proper. After much discussion, the shaman, named Na'atami, requests that peace come between the two nations. Harkins and three guards are escorted to a nearby Mauwanti camp--so well hidden that it officially lay in Palatine land--where Na'atami discusses the peace. There, over 100 Mauwanti warriors are present, though they do not attempt to disarm Harkins or his men.

A photo snapped of Na'atami's camp, 1899

The Mauwanti wish to continue to govern their lands and cite "tribal raiders" started the conflict, of which the Mauwanti later believed to have been coaxed into attacking by trespassing Tarans. The Mauwanti wish to see a White Peace, with promises of stricter control on their border people.

December 17th
The Survian Republic colony of Madasta along the Northern Serranthian coast has revolted. It's former leader, Sultan Neffa, has risen up with 3,000 of his followers. The Survian's--in a crisis of succession on The Continent--have little time to reinforce the 800 man garrison there. Minister of the Navy Wolfgang von Kestenbaum of the Tyro-Redanian Empire immediately calls for a council with the Emperor, citing a possible maneuver to send an Expeditionary Force to take control of the Survian colony--now claiming it's own independence as the Heffan Caliphate and take it's first step into colonialism. This will bring great prestige to the Wolfram Dynasty and an influx of possible resources as the colonies infrastructure is largely in place. It may however upset either the Veletians or the Tarans, who have colonies nearby.

December 26th
In the Madasta Affair, the Tyro-Redanian Empire agrees to send an Expeditionary Force. The ships arrive near the end of the month and after a very short, but intense shore bombardment, the Heffan's there surrender. That night, the Tyro-Redanian flag flies over the capitol building and messages that a third party has joined the race to Serranthia arrive in Confluence and Rigour.

December 31st
Brigadier General Bernhard Ewald Larenz of the Kalpian Republic was a daring man. In fact, he was so daring; he intended to end the Zello-Osladian War with one fell swoop. That swoop was Operation Hanzmich.

The landing craft hit the beach at 0310 hours. An entire brigade dispersed in forty-four different landing craft, the Light 63rd moved in and by 0338 had entered the palisades, moved in through the Royal Garden, taking out a dozen guards using close quarters combat and knives. 1st Platoon entered the building, the most ornate building in all of Zellonia. Brigadier General Larenz himself was among the troops, his K.87 revolver holstered at his side. Troops moved up to the pair of Radenan oak doors, Larenz off to one side. He gave the signal and the soldiers yanked in the door.

A brief firefight ensued, the three men dead on the deck were Zellonian Royal Guardsmen. The last man alive--now standing--was the most important figure in all of Zellonia. "What is the meaning of this?" He shouted, then stumbled back when Larenz brought the revolver to the man's face.

"Uhm, excuse me, your majesty. I am here to end this war."

The Continent, November, 1899

November

November 1st

In the Republic of Itherae, the insurgency and intelligence gathering Operation Forsworn has come to a fruitful conclusion in the Tsardom of Karum. While moderately poor, the Tsardom has managed to mobilize a great swathe of it's available reserve forces into an army numbering nearly 200,000. The fully mobilized Seronan Army however is a meager 120,000 men. Interestingly enough, the Seronan Army--following a monetary transaction with the Kalpian Republic--is extremely well equipped, though it will take some time for these shipments to reach the front.

November 2nd
In the Grand Kingdom of Meung, the Crown Prince Hu Shihuang follows up with the Shihuang Edict, which has a single--and terrible governmental change. It forcibly criminalizes any political or military agent from accepting a government bribe. On the first day of it's enactment, Chief Foreign Financial Minister Mao Huyuan and Minister of Taxation Cui Hong are both arrested, taken outside and summarily executed for taking underhanded payments from warlords in the South.
[Event: Grand Kingdom of Meung loses -$11,850,000. Gains 3 Stability.]

November 5th
In Sindao, the military tribunal of Commander Droulez begins in earnest. Droulez is loved among the native Veletian population as well as the garrison there. He is detested among the Kikitomi population for his efforts to dehumanize them in support of a sex trafficking ring. His trial, taking place over 11,000 miles away, remain front page news in the Empire of Violette. His trial will be conducted expeditiously and is expected to finish before the year is up. The result however, is anyone's guess.
[Event: Trial of Commander Droulez can be decided in favor of the Kikitomi or Veletians. IC response required.]

November 6th
In Rigour, the capital of the Empire of Tara, a private security meeting goes over the details of Operation Halder. [Please see PM entitled Operation Halder.]

November 7th
A single delegate from the Imperium of Hiron arrives in Aetoria from Hiron after nearly three weeks of sea travel. There, he covertly buys 376 M1899 Prager machine guns. A deal originally for 400, it was discovered that some two dozen had become unusable after poor maintenance. Furthermore, the Tyro-Redanian diplomat squeezed several "customs fees" onto the docket, engorging the price to $650,000. While an exorbitant price, the Hironese delegated understood that returning without the weapons would be a death sentence.
[Event: Imperium of Hiron purchases 374 M1899 Prager machine guns for $650,000 from the Tyro-Redanian Empire.]

November 10th
In the Republic of Itherae, the institution of a logistics company attached to existing infantry units seeks to raise the supply capacity for the Itheraen Republican Army.
[Event: Republic of Itherae gains +4% Supply & Logistics].

November 14th
The Tsardom of Radena sends a diplomat to the Marnish Kingdom, north of Zellonia. The diplomat returns heavy handed, as the Marnish Kingdom's diplomats are fiercely neutral in their political ideology and wish to keep it that way.

November 18th
The Veletian Empire has a handful of boats, escorted by a single destroyer the VX Rapport, arrive at Cap Émeraude in Masilia. The tropical coast line is a paradise, but the men understand the hard work ahead of them. Expectations for the completion of the colony to a livable standard are about 12-15 months.

November 20th
The Kalpian Republic passes legislation to help with tax reform and close bureaucratic loopholes in their mixed market economy. Tariff reforms helps standardize trade laws.
[Event: The Kalpian Republic income increases +$760,000/Year.]

November 26th
Kalpian Republic asks the Leikarp Co. to design a bicycle capable of military service. The manufacturer promises a prototype design in the next 6 months.

November 28th
Only two days after passing the Tariff Reform Act, the Kalpian Republic passes the Market Deregulation Act, which seeks to promote growth in private industry. This however does not seem to have the same overarching promise that the Tariff Reform Act held.

October 1st
Operation Sa-To finishes in the Imperium of Hiron. Operators of the Hironese security agency return from deep within Meung, the Continental colonies and the less reputable Warlord settlements. Sa-To's strategic objectives were met with resounding success.
[Event: Please see PM entitled Operation Sa-To]

October 2nd
The Radenan Navy goes on maneuvers, though they are limited in scope as the Radenan Navy is a bureaucratic and underfunded mess. A destroyer Idrik, is lost during maneuvers when her boilers foul completely. Instead of towing her back, her sailors simply disembark and give a half handed salute from aboard a neighboring ship. The gunnery practice they receive is mediocre at best.
[Event: Tsardom of Radena gains +6% Training, -1 Destroyer]

October 3rd
The Osladian Empire appoints Renzi Luchi Carrano to the post of Minister of the Navy. Carrano, a former captain turned politician of sorts, understands the power of a well funded Imperial Navy. His first act as Naval Minister is a charismatic open letter to the Imperial Diet, pleading for additional shells and fuel.

October 4th
The Zellonian Royal Army enacts Operation Redoubt, following the complete mobilization of their troops. With the weather cooling rapidly, the Zellonian troops understand that time is on their side.

October 5th
The first hostilities of the Karumi War break out as 150,000 Karumi soldiers pour over the border into Serona, lighting the sky up in an orange and purple haze of continuous artillery fire. Within hours the first Seronan refugee enters Itherae.

October 6th

The Tsardom of Radena orders it's design bureaus to find a replacement for their ailing, 1888 model rifle. Those two companies interested are Yevstingey International, a fledgling small arms company that drew the attention of Tsar Pyotr II and Suchkov Rifles, the original pioneer of the Tsardom's current rifle. The specifications are simple. They want a rifle that is simple and easy to use.

October 7th

In the Osladian Empire, Count Rusak and Tyro-Redanian Imperial Ambassador Edgar Bain meet. Bain promises their neutrality in a war that is potentially turning against the Oslads, while Rusak more carefully navigates the conversation and promises huge victories in the coming future, a feat that impresses Bain.
[Event: Osladian Empire has +1 Relations with Tyro-Redanian Empire]

October 8th

News hits the Continental stage from the Kalpian Free Press that an arms deal has just been concluded between the Kalpian Republic and the Republic of Serona, a target of the belligerent Tsardom of Karum. This front page story alleges that the Kalpians are selling over 50,000 KR.99 rifles and a hundred 77mm field guns.

Protests start up in Liubeth, Karp and Tarist, with one such movement leader citing: "Self-determination is not a business opportunity!"
[Event: The Kalpian Republic loses 1 Stability. The Kalpian Republic sells 57,200 KR.99 rifles and 100 R98 7.7cm Field Guns to the Republic of Serona for +$1,837,000.]

October 9th

The Tyro-Antarian Empire begins Operation Flintlock, inserting tactical intelligence operatives into the neighboring Survian Republic under Monarch Louis Castignon and the Kingdom of Thecia.

October 10th

In the Republic of Itherae, the Minister of Economics Menoeceus Zacharias finalizes the Zacharias-Puthia Agreement with the Survian Republic. Itherae, who has held claims to the Northwestern Highlands in Serranthia since 1717 but no plans (or capabilities) to colonize it, sell the land to the Survian Republic, dutifully negotiated by Foreign Minister José Puthia for a sum of $62,000,000.
[Event: Republic of Itherae gains +$62,000,000.]

October 11th

The Imperium of Hiron sends a request to Imperial Arms for a new rifle specification. The Imperial Arms bureau promises a protyotype to be delivered in around a years time.

October 12th

In the Grand Kingdom of Meung, Crown Prince Hu Shihuang immediately orders that the dysfunctional and largely inept postal delivery system be destroyed and reformed. While he and his Ministers Council implore that this decision will ensure the lives of everyday citizens will be improved, the genuine cause for this is to ensure that a functional military infrastructure for transporting orders between the districts is in place. Slated to take nearly 2 years, after it's completed, much of coastal Meung will be linked by "Postal Roads," which are hastily drawn but easily navigable tracts of land.

October 13th

To pull attention away from the pending military trial of Commander Droulez, a parade of some considerable prestige in the Empire of Violette] is held. Per usual, thousands turn out from all over the country to get a glimpse of marching soldiers of the Gendarmerie and the monarch and her carriage.
[Event: Empire of Violette gains 1 Stability]

Zello-Osladian theater of war, 1899

September

September 1st
The Republic of Itherae begins a campaign of propaganda against the Tsardom of Karum, citing their expansionist nature and militarization as a threat to "Continental peace." Surrounded on all sides by Great Powers, Karum's saber rattling has since had little effect on anyone but the otherwise placid Seronan politicians to the Southeast. With the Zello-Osladian War raging in the Zellian and Smaragd Sea's, few see the rhetoric of Itheraen President Alexei Georgas. The people however, are united and rally behind him, ushering in huge rallies in Napeze, Diopolis and the Capital.
[Event: The Republic of Itherae gains +1 Stability.]

September 2nd
The coronation of Empress Tsirina went on, some say, despite 'The War' that raged less than 500 kilometers to the east. Taking place not in the Palace but at the Golden Pavilion where some of the greatest painters and architects of the Revival lay. While the Osladian Tsar and the Zellonian King were extended invites, both of whom refused, the most important guest, Tsar Pyotr II of Radena, was in attendance. An over the top affair that lasted well into the tonight, the coronation was an exercise in Veletian politics: flash and spectacle. The entire trip home, Pyotr II--speaking Veletian, no less--spoke excitedly of the event, reciting in particular detail every one of his favorite moments.

September 3rd
The Kalpian Republic sets up the Department of Military Police. Funded to establish the control of potential dissidents, the DMP employs nearly 5,500 agents across the entire nation with their sights set on controlling the borders to ensure that potential wrongdoers are not granted entrance into the nation.

September 4th
The Tsardom of Karum submits the Salaz Ultimatum. A political manifesto requesting that the Principality of Serona immediately cede it's territories harboring at least 10% Karumi citizens or face immediate war. The Seronan government, hoping to avoid both war and potentially losing a third of its territories, have asked the government of Kalpia to arbitrate these demands.

September 5th
The Osladian Empire immediately sends a delegation to refute the Kalpian's insistence of Karumi aggression in the area. Given that they were tenuous allies in the Zello-Osladian War, the Kalpians managed to stall Oslad during negotiations in Salaz long enough for the Tsardom of Karum to send an official declaration of war to the Principality of Serona.

The Karumi War of Aggression had just started, and both Osladian and Kalpian diplomats left Salaz feeling as if they had accomplished too little.
[Event: Kalpian Republic and Osladian Empire suffer -1 Relations]

September 6th
In Lieubeth, Kalpia, President Reimund Braun addresses a 1,000 men assembly of the Kalpian Republican Navy, hours before they set sail in their war against the Kingdom of Zellonia. He speaks of resistance against oppression, and strength in the face of adversity. "I salute you, brave soldiers of the Republican Navy, for the swift victory you are about to bring."
[Event: Kalpian Republican Navy gains +15% Morale]

September 7th
The KRN Grunewalde, a Kalpian submarine, leaves Karp harbor. Approximately 11 hours later it surfaces 44 nautical miles off the coast of Zeel in the Smaragd Sea and torpedoes the ZRN Danielson, a 12,000-ton merchant freighter carrying spices to Veletia. The survivors are left in the water.

The KRN Grunewalde on it's way out of Karp, 1899

Two hours later the same submarine surfaces, at about dusk, and attacks the ZRN Halloway, a 9,000-ton merchant ship carrying foodstuffs back from Tyro-Redania. She sinks in 44 minutes, with the Grunewalde's wake disappearing in the distance.

[Event: Kingdom of Zellonia's Army suffers -1% Morale]

September 8th
While war raged in the Zellian Sea, the Kalpian Republic ordered it's first sortie in the neighboring Smaragd Sea on the 8th of September. The 1st Kalpian Fleet under Admiral Walenty Norbert Sobol departed Lieubeth before sunrise with 4 armored cruisers, 5 light cruisers and 10 destroyers. They sallied across the Smaragd Sea and arrived first at the coastal city of Kenlth. For four and a half hours the city endured a nefarious waiting game while the ships sat half a mile off shore.

And did nothing.

They moved later to the coastal metropolis of Jovington, where the firepower of the Kalpian fleet trained their guns on the shipyard there, destroying a destroyer keel that had just been laid. It took over 700 shells from Kalpian guns. With the sun near it's apex, the ships loitered for a while longer--the Kalpian sailors close enough to see the beleaguered citizens of Zellonia, who could do nothing. Then the Kalpian fleet sailed back home to Liubeth.

September 9th
The Veletian Gendarmerie Colonel Edouart Larousse and 160 officers arrive in Xuefeng, Meung after nearly four and a half weeks at sea aboard the ship Lefeuvre. They are on a diplomatic mission to help the dilapidated and otherwise underfunded and under trained officer corps of the Meung Dominion. The training, expected to take nearly eighteen months is an attempt to increase relations between the Dominion and Violette. The Veletian Empire hopes to benefit from increased trade relations with Meung in the near future.

September 10th
The Tyro-Redanian Empire and the Republic of Itherae sign a Trade Pact agreeing for the former to sell 2,000 tons of chromium a year in exchange for a similar amount of oil.

September 11
The Tsardom of Radena sends Maslov Yamelyarovich to the Imperium of Hiron and quickly sorts out a deal for over 10,000 tons of grain and fish in exchange for $10,000,000. For $10,000,000 the Tsardom will supply 10,000 tons for a duration of 5 years, totally over 50,000 tons in duration.

September 12th
The Second Battle of the Zeelian Sea occurs. With orders to hunt one another down, it was a mere inevitability that the fleets of Zellonia and Oslad were to clash. The 12th of September was sunny, without much a cloud in the sky. Visibility was disgustingly high and it took little time for the two fleets to locate one another. The Zellonians, who had orders to: "launch an attack against the city of across from the Zellic peninsula. Their target once more is any industrial base and shipyards. If/When engaged the fleet shall if possible aim for the larger ships such as pre-dreadnoughts and armored cruisers and submarines. If not engaged continue firing on the city before returning for resupplying," first had to maneuver past the less stellar fleet of the Osladian Empire.

While the Persevet repaired, the Imperator Nikolas II was helmed by Grushanin, perhaps the singular most important mistake of the war. As a man whom had suffered a rather egregious defeat, he was now shaken--fearful of losing a command he knew didn't belong to him. The Zellonians on the other hand sailed with a full complement. Their coastal defense ships were not suited away from the terrestrially brown waters and only minutes before combat engagements both coastal defense ships ZRN Vile Waves and ZRN Widow Maker had their boilers overworked while crossing the Zellian Sea and were effectively immobile, too far out of range to make a difference in the coming engagement.

The Zellonian Fleet, upon spotting the Osladian squadrons in bound, ordered a full turn about in accordance with it's orders: " If engaged the fleet is to retreat back across to the strait where they'll gain covering fight from the artillery. Should thing turn dire the fleet should flee if they can to the closest city of Vorl if not to open waters on course to the Taranese empire."

While the Zellonian soldiers were eager to fight--as they outnumbered their Osladian counterparts in quality and firepower--Rear Admiral Jefferson Boch gave the order to turn about north. The Second Battle of the Zeelian Sea was less the decisive engagement that the Royal Zellonian Navy could have made it and more a pursuing action by the Osladian fleet. For six hours the Osladians pursued a zig-zagging Zellonian fleet: damaging the Zellonian coastal defense ship ZRN Beowolf, striking and putting dead in the water the coastal defense ship ZRN Iron Hand and sinking outright in a single salvo from the Osladian Imperator Nikolas II the Zellonian light cruiser ZRN Victory.

The Osladians, with a Zellonian coast in sight, turned away and let the Zellonian 3rd Fleet sulk into harbor.

September 13th
The Metropolitan Industries company in the Kalpian Republic begins work on roads and rails in and around the city of Tairist, expected to take up to six months.

September 14th-21st
The Wauwanti War continues, with a heavy hand of autonomy for Lieutenant Colonel Harvick, who has returned to Argentine in the west, leaving only light garrisons in the East while his soldiers refit and rearm. In his journals, he describes the seven day march back to Argentine as the Walk through the Eleven Hells and More, as they encounter Wauwanti raiders, lack of rations and even mutiny. Over 740 soldiers perish in the walk, and Harvick's battered force of 2,100 (that set out in August with nearly 5,000 men) finally reach Argentine.

September 22nd
A campaign by the Tyro-Redanian Empire begins with the Itheraens in mind. It begs for the collectivism of Empire over Culture, citing that the Itheraens are not a minority but the bread and butter of an intricate web that makes up the Dual Monarchy. The campaign costs nearly $3,700,000 but local observers report that Itheraens appear in.. better spirits.

September 25th
Only four weeks after her coronation, the Empress Tsirine of the Veletian Empire arrives in Sindao, Veletian Settumu on a humanitarian mission. There, she meets with Governor Droulez, a grizzled war veteran who acts as both Military Administrator of the Veletian National Garrison as well as it's acting political administrator. While there, a native Settumu reporter makes contact with the Empress' guard, who reveals information of a potential scandal. It's revealed in that same week that Governor Droulez has been reallocating funds from the National Garrison into a vicious sex trafficking operation; taking girls from Meung, Hiron and Kikitomi for use as service girls for the soldiery of the National Garrison.

The scandal's publicity is brought to a close with Empress Tsirine leaving without her expected tour of the islands, but it's expected that in the coming weeks the fate of Governor Droulez, currently on house arrest in Sindao, will be delivered. His competence as both an administrator and leader of military men cannot be understated, but many--especially the native Kikitomi--now see him as more villain than hero.

Settumu, 1899

Less diverse than The Continent, Settumu and the Eastern Sea was still home a privy of varied cultures and nation states. Most prominent among them was the Dominion of Meung. Easily the largest nation in the world with a population of 413,000,000--dwarfing even the Tarantese Empire's colonial population of 291,000,000, Meung was a dynastic empire steeped in history. With a navy comprised of 2 armored cruiser and a dozen destroyers, her primary focus was not as a seaborne power but as a land based one. The Meung Army however was in dire straits. With a peacetime form of 750,000 men to police half a continent, it was estimated only 70% of them were equipped and ready to fight. Similarly, their training was estimated to be of low quality as well.

Sessauan Settumu was a semi-autonomous colony. A dense island chain, it had belonged to Sessau since the 1600's. The native islanders were called the Kikitomi. The Kikitomi Army was estimated to be around 80,000 with an additional Sessauan colonial guard present. The Sessauan Kikitomi Squadron was comprised of 4 armored cruisers and 6 light cruisers.

Settumese Tara was a strip of land south of Meung, which formerly belonged to the Meung and made up the majority of the Tarantese presence in Settumu, besides the naval port of Taicao in the North. Tarantese naval strength here is well guarded, but it is believed that at least 2 Pre-Dreadnoughts lay anchored there.

Most notable were the various island chains also present, of which no nations had yet laid claim.

There, they entrenched themselves, along with their field guns.

The Zellonian 8th Fleet under Admiral George Tuster, espousing the Pre-Dreadnought ZRN Kingdom Come, 3 armored cruisers, 5 light cruisers and 3 destroyers heads south from the port of Vorl. They have orders to perform coastal raids and ".. If engaged the fleet is to retreat back across to the strait."

The sinking of the ZRN Gathering Storm, 1899

With only 3 destroyers in a basic vanguard, observers aboard the armored cruiser ZRN Gathering Storm fail to see the wake of the torpedo fired from the OIN Kuguar. The hit immediately caused the destruction of the No. 2 gun battery magazine and in 17 minutes the ZRN Gathering Storm founded. Unaware of where the submarine was, General Tuster immediately ordered signals for a general retreat. The 8th Fleet turned and sailed back toward Vorl, while Zellonian sailors of the ZRN Gathering Storm cried for help in the calm waters.

August 19th-23rd
The Inner Sea--claimed by Zellonia--is opened to trade once again as Zellonia releases the Kalpian and Radenan trade ships that were interned and promises not to target those ships further. 24 nautical miles off the Western Shores of Zellonia, the 1st Light Fleet under Kapitan Miro Kirilov completes his mission successfully and returns to Oslograd only four days later, submitting a completed report to the Ministry of War.

August 30th
While war raged in the West, the Radenan Tsardom passes the Settumu Resettlement Act, hoping to relocate citizens from the West to the East to spur industrial growth there by tapping into otherwise unused resources. Cities like Seosong, Kutbor and Tougata are among the cities chosen.

The Zellonian 3rd Fleet under Rear Admiral Jefferson Bock leaves port at Vorl and sails into the Osladian Straits. The straits, long held in tandem by the Osladian and Zellonian monarchies, suddenly becomes a Zellonian lake. The 3rd Fleet, under orders from the Zellonian monarch itself orders all vessels flying merchant flags to be redirected to Vorl where they will be searched and potentially seized if carrying contraband. Under orders from the Zellonian King, all merchant vessels passing through the Inland Strait will be privy to a 6% tax, or be seized and interned.

The Zeelian Affair unfolds rapidly, with a half dozen merchant ships--2 Kalpian, 1 Radenan and 3 Osladian--all steered into Vorl within the course of several hours. No goods are seized. All the ships are interned barring potential payments from their governments regarding passage through the Inland Strait. The Zellonian 3rd Fleet, 20 ships strong, patrol the coast day and night.

The so named Wauwanti War sees it's first battle as 4,400 Imperial soldiers of the Tarantese Army, using colonial scouts, hunt down a wandering mass of Wauwanti warriors. The Battle of Anuit occurs over three days, where soldiers of the Tarantese Army engage the Wauwanti columns over a long stretch of grassy hills. July 8-10th
The Tsardom of Karum continues a ruthless campaign of propaganda against Serona and Oslad, targeting the 60,000 soldiers placed on their border. "The Seronans seek to hedge us in with their long time friends. They would see us poor, clambering forever in the mud!" The Karumi Army grows to an impressive 180,000 active duty soldiers. Karumi's military industry is nearly non-existent, though a diplomat arrives in Aetoria to purchase some of the nation's new military hardware.

July 15th
The Osladian Empire was quick to realize the severity of the Zeelian Affair. While the Kalpian politicians bickered in Parliament, Prime Minister Selidov steeled his resolve and ordered the Imperial 1st Fleet under Rear Admiral Aleksandr Grushanin set sail, with the Pre-Dreadnought Peresvet as his flagship. Their orders were simple: The Fleet is to search out Zellonian vessels and, if they refuse to stand down peacefully, send them to the bottom of the strait. This was not Grushanin's first posting to a command position and he had long endured stories of Zellonian incompetence. On the morning of the 15th, he was in good spirits.

"There'll be no negotiations," Selidov had told him. The Persevet was accompanied by 3 armored cruisers, 5 light cruisers and vanguard of 18 destroyers. The fleet broke wide, expecting to find and converge on Bock's 3rd Fleet. At 0900 hours, observers on the Persevet announced the sighting of the Zellonia's Revenge and a pair of destroyers flanking her.

"Flag her down," Grushanin said. "We'll send them back North and be home before sunset. Prime the batteries, just in case." Trailing the Persevet was the armored cruiser Taiga and two destroyers. Gunners on the Persevet turned their guns on the Revenge. On the horizon, observers from the Persevet noticed two armored cruisers approaching flying Zellonian flags. Flagbearers on the Persevet signaled to the Zellonia's Revenge to send a crew for negotiations. They repeated the signal three times. The batteries on the Zellonia's Revenge began to turn.

Osladian pre-dreadnought Persevet, 1899

"She's coming to bear on us. Open fire."

The battle was less a concentrated affair and a chaotic dance of ships identifying each other from afar and opening up on each other. The Zellonian Revenge and Persevet both engaged one another at near maximum range at nearly a kilometer away. When the Revenge's ammunition stores ran dry, she turned back North. The Persevet pursued but the threat of Coastal Defense Ships--pre-dreadnoughts with conditions fit for shore based operations--had her limp back to Oslograd at dusk.

The Wauwanti War continues with the Empire of Tara moving soldiers across the barren Counties Palatine with near 5,000 Imperial troops. A colonial messenger from outside Argentine arrives on horseback with news that a Wauwanti raiding party has skirted the Northern border and started attacking Argentine.

Tarantese commander Harkins orders his troops on a forced march back to Argentine on July 17th. With full packs and gear, the 5 regiments arrive back at Argentine on July 19th. There, they find nearly 8,000 Wauwanti soldiers and cavalry. Killing, raping and maiming, they turn their attention to Harkins' troops in the fixed Battle of Argentine.

Lieutenant Commander Harkins pictured right, during the Battle of Argentine, 1899

Exhausted from marching, the Tarantese soldiers attempted to engage in enfilade fire while hastily creating entrenchments in the rough Serranthian dirt. The Wauwanti raiders, many of them acting autonomously and without aim, were also mounted and very mobile. Many Tarantese soldiers exhausted their all of their ammunition during the seven and a half hour shootout. And at dusk, 1,100 Tarantese and 4,500 Wauwanti lay dead. Argentine itself was unscathed, save for demolished and burning shanties on the outside of the port. Harkins was grazed from a Wauwanti rifle shot. The Wauwanti--3,500 strong--retreated piecemeal back to the East under cover of darkness.

The Emperor of Hiron, so called the Dragon Emperor moves to seek out corruption and bureaucracy in Hiron, espousing the Imperial Parliament to finish legislature to close taxation loopholes and remove senseless political entities that waste money. In the Republic of Itherae, General Thaddeus Nikas orders 70,000 troops to the border. Not mobilized, these troops are slow to gather and move to the border. General Nikas' entourage comes across a half dozen soldiers crouched along the ground gambling. He orders the column to a halt and demands to know which unit the soldiers are apart of. One smart mouthed soldier replied: "Well, the Itheraen Army of course!"

This lackadaisical attitude runs rampant in the Itheraen Army, and these soldiers, more a jumbled mass of soldiery than a professional army, slowly falls prey to soldiers going AWOL as basic information on which unit a soldier belongs to is murky at best.
[Event: Itherae loses 3,800 soldiers. -1% Supply & Logistics]
