I think I saw something in the book store recently that's a Sci-Fi novel that ponders on what a space empire would look like had the Roman Empire never fallen.

Ironically, that seems to be a fairly popular subject. I had an idea for a game with that very topic, thought it was original, and then found out someone else had nearly made the exact same game about a decade earlier ~_~).
