I don't know much about illegality of gay marriage, but it's my understanding that gay couples can still have civil unions in all states, right?

Which, to a lot of gay people, especially gay Christians, feels more like a consolation prize than anything else.

No, I wanna say its 20 states right now that have legal civil unions or same sex marriages...

And civil union=/=marriage

Civil unions don't receive certain benefits that marriage does. Like insurance things and such. I feel like I've had this conversation a dozen times.

Civil unions aren't the same as marriage, as has been stated. And a straight couple can get married without it being religious. We got married with a JP and a non religious ceremony. Religion has shit all to do with it these days. It's only something the religious folk drag out because they really have no valid arguement that gays should not get married. If their church decides not to perform a ceremony, that's on them. But legally, they should be allowed to because of things like Awson mentioned, only a spouse can have access too. Time to stop the seperate but equal crap because we all know that it doesn't work and it's not true.

well that's the idea with this one, 'Hey guys about this whole marriage thing -- we're out, good luck, sort it yourselves.' No more of that 'By the power vested in my by the state of Kentucky' crap, no more 'You're not married until you pay the court for a license' crap, nothing. It's bonkers but it makes sense.

Really? I'd always thought that civil unions carried all of the same legal benefits and provisions that marriage does.
