That it would.
Frankly speaking, in the horror games, reaction of the characters goes only as far as the players perceive it should go, and in my experience, majority of the "horror" stories that try to force the "mood" on the players are more frustrating than actually disturbing.
So might as well make that(ability to give a level appraisal of events) a defining feature of the character, instead of making a "normal guy" and then dealing with the accusations of not roleplaying properly.

@Progenitusmy biggest concern was a player using that kind of character premise to completely disregard the things in the RP and for the cool-factor. I’m willing to hear people out on their logic for their characters as long as it’s not too outlandish.

I’ll obviously wait for the OOC and character sheets instead of waving a hand and banishing people for things I seemingly just don’t like.

@Andreyichas long as he has skills that might be valuable to the team in the future. Steve Foster would probably try to throw him off the trail or feed him misinformation. A tenacious journalist could find a man with a suppressed gun in his house bringing an ultimatum with him.

Join or become the “latest victim of the Blackriver Killer”, if you catch my meaning.

Posting from my phone and have graveyard shift soon, so OOC coming tomorrow morning. I look forward to seeing everyone’s best efforts at their CSs!

I would think that even extremely rational beings would have to engage actual events; the allegations that suppressed instinctive response would lead to disregard of "things" seem to be based on the premise that normal character's reaction is anywhere close to that of normal people; however, it should be noted that we are detached from the perception of actual events by our characters by both the factor of lack of full sensory input, as well as by having time to think through the situation, as opposed to having to act in the spur of moment; circumventing that problem requires players to be exceedingly versed in the art of method acting, which, in my experience, is untrue for majority of player base. Therefore, the main difference for this character is not the depth of immersion in the events, but rather take on his reactions, from the player's point of view.

As for the cool factor, I'm not sure what did you intend to say there, so please elaborate, if you will.

@Progenitusyou know, you set yourself away from most that would think up “I want to play a special forces operator with suppressed fear”

Where they leave it at that and then play what pretty much amounts to the Terminator, I see you’ve thought things through a lot, which I very much appreciate. It is creative without being too outlandish for a mission with secrecy and sensitivity like it does.

RIP. Well, I'll try to throw something together that is both interesting but also relevant to this and could go down that plot line which is pretty interesting. I'll aim for the weekend.

Alright I have the a rough idea that I am considering here and checking it against GM. I want to make a CIA Analyst who is at her core a science fiction/fantasy geek. She reads too many sci-fi novels home alone and thinks it would be awesome if monsters really did exist. In her spare time she uses CIA resources to collect data on "sightings" and "encounters" much like a conspiracy theorist. No real connection to the occult or real things that go bump in the night. I am torn on what might make her a seemingly ideal recruit, are the PC's going to be together as a group? I don't precisely believe in photographic memory so I rule that out immediately but I do want to present her as naive yet very intelligent.

Her particular decay naturally, via what I am gathering from the game mechanic, will be that she either becomes truly enamored of the dark places and be a useful character. Or she will be pushed to the breaking point.

I bought a novel and downloaded the game setting in order to get a fuller understanding of the feel so my apologies if I am not grasping the concept completely yet.

I'm playing an RP where my character is a noob to the whole supernatural stuff, but something happened to her that she started searching for information and that is why she was recruited. I'd like to play with that idea some. Thinking she would have a career as a lawyer or psychiatrist/psychologist, someone able to talk and negotiate with others. I have other ideas if that does not pan out.

@Andreyichnot necessarily that he’ll def die. It’ll be an interesting arc to follow and an equally interesting one to be “racing” the team, so to speak. Lots of opportunity for this character concept to run afoul of horrors or just know too much and either be recruited or tied up like a loose end.

That ultimatum obviously being de facto “ok I’ll join pls no kill” unless your character just wants to die. Again, this journalist needs to have some type of skill(skills will be posted with the actual CS template tomorrow morning) that would make Foster hesitant to waste him.

@TenslashsixCIA Analyst with tangential ties to the occult/mythos is very plausible as someone Foster would consider.

@FantasyChicthis character archetype and field/occupation is pretty feasible. She’d have to specialize in clients that would require her to have some sort of gov’t security clearance though. She could’ve had someone that ‘knew too much’, or something of that sort and gone digging too deep for her own good into his past when he “goes missing” aka tied up as a loose end as someone would be by Delta Green agents or other gov’t/foreign entities. Very light exposure to the occult/mythos/ET is one of the criteria characters would have to meet for Foster to try bringing them into the DG fold.

@FantasyChicas long as you can get more creative than I can. I probably can’t think of many cases involving things the gov’t doesn’t want the public knowing about making it to court. She could’ve been brought into a legal council for a shady gov’t program like BOX TOP, feel free to look that spooky RL shit up.

Another concern of mine about a lawyer being brought on is the fact that the activities DG usually gets into in the name of preventing the inevitable can be pretty morally and legally corrupt.

This goes out to anyone drafting up a character concept, feel free to PM me once the OOC drops to bounce ideas off of. I want people to take their ideas as far as they can get, but they have to make sense within the context of the RP and the secrecy and sensitivity of the mission.

@Leidenschaft What better person to help prevent legal issues from coming to roost than a lawyer?

I can get down with that idea. Given the skill list, I think I have someone able to persuade and interrogate for the benefit of the group. In the other RP I mentioned, they are also doing things against a legal and moral code. MY character is invested because she wants the truth and knows there is more going on than meets the eye.

I got this. Trust me :)
