I might be mistaken, but since we don't have a specific star date and among the characters I am seeing different times in the history of the Great Crusade, I am very confused on what to put for my history.

In the aftermath of the Istvaan Dropsite Massacre, some Astartes legions have turned against the Emperor of Mankind and wage war against him. In turn, some legions remain loyal.

So I'd assume it'd be in between the Istvaan III massacre and the Siege of Terra itself, so 006.M31 to ‎0014.M31

I don't think you are, they're all in the aftermath of Istvaan V - the original betrayal - and before the Siege of Terra.

Minus the Thousand Son, who were carved up by the Space Dogs earlier in the timeline.

And there's a 7 year gap between the two things. The Horus Heresy lasted a long time. This is just the start.

I'll have my guy start off on Maccrage and see if there's an Ork WAAAGH he could help beat and a rebellion to quell once I get home from work.

That's about right. Well, overwhelm his paltry only-human guards, who probably would like to be able to tell their grandkids that they survived an astartes assault. And then they're in the corridors, where numbers count for less...
