JONAH DECKER

P R E L U D E
Jonah was born in Atlanta, Georgia to a teenage girl with no means of supporting herself, much less her newborn son. Left with little choice, she relinquished Jonah to the care of the state. For most of his childhood, Jonah bounced between various foster homes across Georgia. Despite doing well in school, the boy was involved in a number of altercations with his peers, earning a reputation as an unrepentant, albeit gifted, troublemaker from the school administration.

However, after spending a brief stint in juvenile hall, Jonah was permanently adopted by Scott and Maria Decker at the age of fourteen. He took quickly to the couple and their biological son Ian, who was near his own age. Scott was a military veteran and police officer, whose firm but fair demeanor ensured that Jonah's disciplinary issues all but evaporated within a matter of weeks following his adoption.

Following in his father's footsteps, Jonah enlisted with the United States Army as an infantryman following high school graduation, volunteering for service with the 75th Ranger Regiment. He was assigned to the 3rd Ranger Battalion, serving with distinction in Iraq and Afghanistan. After four years with the Rangers, Decker transitioned to the Special Forces community. Jonah served as a Green Beret Weapons Sergeant before working his way up to become an Intelligence Sergeant, qualified sniper, and member of an elite CIF Company. Hendrix participated in multiple combat deployments overseas, earning a variety of commendations for valor and meritorious service; he was considered to be on the "fast track" for recruitment to the Army Compartmented Element (i.e. "Delta Force") or even the Central Intelligence Agency.

However, three years ago, Jonah's career took a drastic turn. His six-man Special Forces team was attached to a unit of Afghan National Army soldiers and dispatched deep into the Hindu Kush mountains in order to locate & capture or kill a high-value Taliban spiritual leader. As the unit advanced to contact in the dead of night, they were ambushed. In addition to conventional weapons fire, they were assaulted by otherworldly forces. Though Decker didn't know it at the time, the so-called "spiritual leader" was in fact a powerful Mystic who had thrown his lot in with the Taliban, lording over them as a prophet.

Now he turned that power on Jonah's comrades. In the ensuing skirmish, blood was shed on both sides. Jonah was the sole survivor of his team. Despite receiving a crippling injury to his left leg, he succeeded in his mission and the Mystic was eliminated. Decker was recovered via medevac and transported to a field hospital, where his left leg was amputated below the knee to later be replaced by a prosthesis.

Over the next several days, Jonah was debriefed by his superiors as well as numerous intelligence outfits. He recounted his tale of supernatural intervention, which was dismissed as the ranting of a victim of severe PTSD and survivor's guilt. However, word of his experiences reached the Department of Paranormal Surveillance, who were already keeping tabs on the operation. Following his mental and physical rehabilitation, Jonah was approached by recruiters for the DPS who offered him a slot within the Division. Jonah accepted.

I D E O L O G Y
Jonah is at first glance the consummate "quiet professional": soft-spoken, determined, and detail-oriented. Though these are qualities he is sometimes praised for by his superiors, he has been described by many of his peers as tense, though one less generous might call him uptight. However, those who manage to make it into his "inner circle" (through criteria known only to him) find a surprisingly warm friend given to the occasional display of self-deprecating humor.

Though raised Catholic, Jonah is an agnostic atheist. His peers within the DPS are sometimes surprised to discover that he is generally unwilling to launch into speculation at length regarding the nature of the Void. Though he'll study it religiously in order to become better at his job, by outside appearances that's all it is to him: a job. A duty. Decker sees the Division as the next step in his career of service to his country, one he feels particularly compelled to follow after witnessing the fates of his comrades overseas. Jonah believes that he can make a greater difference as part of the vanguard against the otherworldly forces of the Void than he ever could as a Soldier.

In truth, Jonah continues to fight a constant mental and emotional struggle. Though cleared by Division psychologists for duty, he is nonetheless afflicted by moderate post-traumatic stress disorder, though he does his best to hide the effects. Decker is intent to the point of near-obsession with the goal of proving himself as a capable member of the Division, despite the apparent handicap of his prosthesis.

A P P E A R A N C E
Jonah makes for a rather imposing figure, standing at 6'4" and weighing roughly 250 pounds. His frame is broad-shouldered, with an athletic build. He keeps his dark brown hair relatively close-cropped, with a well-trimmed beard adorning his jawline. His eyes are a shade of steely gray. A half-sleeve tattoo depicting the insignia of the Army Special Forces is on his upper left arm, while his right features the crest of the 75th Ranger Regiment.

W A R F A R E
Jonah's standard sidearm of choice is a Gen4 Glock 17 worn in a holster on his belt, while a Ruger LCR revolver is carried in a concealed ankle holster on his left instep. A folding tactical knife and multitool are often on his person.

Should the situation call for a more forceful response, Decker gears up in body armor and tactical load-bearing equipment, along with breaching tools, a field medical kit, etc. His favored long gun is a suppressed short-barreled HK416 assault rifle, fitted with a variety of accessories. When the situation allows for clear sight lines favorable to his background as a sniper, Decker opts for a LaRue OBR semi-automatic sniper rifle or -- in truly dire scenarios -- a Barrett Model 95 anti-materiel rifle loaded with armor-piercing high-explosive incendiary ammunition.

T R I V I A

Born in Ireland to a mystic father and historian mother, much of Ferdi's childhood was colored by the interactions his father had with the Void and its creatures. He learned the history of mysticism around the world but particularly in Ireland, as well as of significant interactions in history between the Void and the material world. Exposure to Void phenomena and abilities affected Ferdi's sanity negatively, especially early on, causing him to suffer in his school work for most of his years. One experience of which Ferdi never experience partook, though, was entry into or viewing of the Void itself. No matter his father's desire to have Ferdi continue family line of mysticism, his father knew that exposure without conditioning had a great risk of causing Ferdi's death. And so they trained.

Disregarding the often shaken sanity, many of Ferdi's encounter with the Void were neutral or even good. His father would often use the Void to help friends or family in times of need, making sure to keep the intrusion of that other dimension as limited as possible. Even the most careful are subject to fate. As Ferdi's father was helping with a surgery for IRA members, an attempt at utilizing Void powers slipped out of his control. Only the father survived of the dozen people in the building. Following this mistake, Ferdi and his family fled Ireland to the United States. Sixteen years old when this happened in 1982, Ferdi was forced to readjust to the new country for his final two years of high school.

Having discarded all tools of the Void in fleeing and swearing to never again access that dimension, his father thought himself safe. Within three weeks of their arrival in the United States, the Department of Paranormal Surveillance had found and confronted Ferdi's father, forcing him to sign on to an agreement of aid in exchange for allowing the family to live. Fear and suspicion permeated almost everything Ferdi did, wondering when the DPS would act in some manner. It never did.

Finishing school and then acquiring a degree in religious studies from Boston University, Ferdi sought to better understand the Void and its workings by examining the stories and beliefs associated with it from cultures across the world in depth. Several years of travel and study yielded little more than the knowledge that the Void seemed to take on a unique aspect for each individual. While the Void itself remained obscured to him, its interactions with the world became clearer.

His first direct exposure to the Void occurred when he was twenty-seven. Drinking at a bar in Maine, he noticed a faint humming sound from the stock room that reminded him similar sounds he had heard in mystic rituals. Three dozen people survived because of his warning; the same could not be said for the establishment. By the time units from the local Division arrived, most of the interior was destroyed along with significant portions of the outside facade. Ferdi would or could not recount how he survived that situation when interrogated but accepted the "offer" of joining the Division.

He would serve as one of Greater Maine's DPS Division units for the next eighteen years, leading dozens of counter-Void operations and acting as one of the primary liaisons with and advisers on Mystics given his past. Where many fell by the wayside due to the psychological stresses associated with the occupation, Ferdi continued on without any negatives visibly apparent. It was a common rumor that this was because Ferdi had no more sanity left to lose, but regardless of anyone's opinion, he was reliable and effective. Now fifty years old and retired for five years, he is again called back to duty.

I D E O L O G Y
Described as insane by some, a genius by others, those who knew Ferdi during his time in the Divison all agreed that he was enthralled by his work. Each opportunity to work with Mystics was taken by him, learning studiously of their techniques and origins, abilities and actions. Not one to be grim, he would often attempt to bolster the spirits of his comrades during their operations. Even in the midst of combat, he would sing ballads of his own exploits or that of popular figures in history, sometimes carrying on conversation with team-mates in the middle of a firefight. Although this partial insanity made him effective at ignoring the Void, it also unnerved some he worked with.

Born and raised a Catholic, Ferdi continues to practice even at the age of fifty, having incorporated many religious rituals into his preparations and operations while serving in the Division. Raised with a much more neutral-positive view of that darkened dimension than most, he seeks to understand as much of it as he can. To do so, he has adapted practices from religions around the world relating to the Void so long as they did not conflict too greatly with his own Catholic beliefs. He sees the Void as having potential for good. Humanity simply has to find the key, a key which is hidden somewhere in the beliefs of people.

A P P E A R A N C E
A rather wiry man at 5'9" and 174 pounds, he maintains a rather scruffy look. Sideburns and mustache are relatively well maintained, with a thin stubble covering much of the rest of his face. Ferdi normally wears working jeans, shirt with thicker buttoned jacket, and a beanie skull cap when not working, but he will take more appropriate clothing for combat operations. Usually. His short, thinning hair is normally hidden under the skull cap. There are tattoos of the zodiac on his body, one on each finger excluding the thumb, one on each palm, and one each forearm.

W A R F A R E
A firm believer in tradition and luck, Ferdi always took a particular set of items with him, no matter the mission. He wielded a dirk which was blessed by a priest once a year, an M1911A1 with a customized grip, sights, and refined internal mechanisms, and an FN FAL 50.63. More specialized equipment was taken as needed, including body armor and charms/anti-Void items.

T R I V I A
-Spends most of his days fishing, reading up on various subjects, and writing a book about his experiences.
-Lives in Rockland, Maine
-Has an extensive collection of garden gnomes
-Visits Ireland every summer
-Often plays music from speakers while doing anything Void related, especially combat

P R E L U D E
Amelia was born in the Ardeal region of Romania. It has for centuries been a place subjected to heavy influence of the Void. Superstition was and is common among the people. Old folk tales tell of the 'shadow realm' and its horrors that lurk the deep forests of the land. Amelia was always skeptical of such myths until the day that the Void swallowed her whole. She spent six weeks in the Romanian Void before she eventually found her way back home. Her parents thought she had disappeared for good, that the Ardeal forest had taken her, but such was ultimately not the case. Amelia returned and told of her nightmare and the things she had seen.

Superstitious and Catholic as they were, Amelia's parents believed their child and became worried for her mental health. They saw to it that Amelia visited the local priest in order to be cleansed and blessed. After the ceremony, Amelia described how the closed mouths of the people inside the Church voiced their thoughts to her, and that they were not particularly nice. The next night, several neighbors knocked on the door and suggested an intervention of their own kind. The outcome was violent, but Amelia and her mother managed to escape the confrontation. The two women fled to America. Amelia's mother had always wanted to visit, but certainly not under these circumstances. Some years later, she passed away without knowing if her husband was still alive in Romania after that unfortunate night.

Despite the early setbacks, Amelia did well for herself. She spent a few years with a foster family that taught her English and arranged for her education. However, they did not know about Amelia's connection to the Void. The girl kept it a firm secret. She eventually figured out that the voices she heard in her head was the thoughts of other people around her. It was quite maddening at first, but over the years she managed to deal with it. During her High School years, Amelia began to experiment with techniques she had come by through strange books. She also conducted brief ventures in the Void on her own, for the sake of learning something about it.

During her university years, Amelia resumed her Church duties that she had grown up with. She attended mass every Sunday and confessed whenever she was able to. Only a few years ago, a new priest heard her confessions—Father Michael Lacoste. Little did she know that he was a man with knowledge of the secret world and a connection to the Vatican in Rome. He quickly understood what Amelia was, and that she had been exposed to the Void. The two conversed outside of Church matters and shared knowledge with each other. Therefore, the intricate complexities of the secret world is rather new to Amelia—of her thirty years being alive, only two have been fully 'awake'.

In the present, Amelia is a Mystic in every sense of the word. She lives a normal life in front of the veil with a job and friends, but her nocturnal activities expand much further. Amelia helps Father Lacoste with whatever is needed, search for children recently escaped from the Void, assists The Division whenever she runs into them, and continues to develop her understand of her connection to the Void. Portsmouth Bay has been her home ever since she arrived in America. Its occult activities are much like those in Romania. One would think that she would want to escape once again, but somehow she feels right at home.

I D E O L O G Y
Amelia take every opportunity to improve her knowledge about herself and her nature. She is naturally curious and invites intellectual challenges whenever they appear. Her creativity and imagination is utilized for planning courses of action in all possible scenarios. She trusts her rationalism above all else. Her communication is honest and direct, not held back by social roles or expectations. Amelia's creativity, logic, and confidence leads to her taking responsibility for her actions. Overall, she is independent and decisive, open-minded, and determined.

However, Amelia can appear arrogant in her remarks. She can be come become brutally insensitive in making her opinions perfectly clear. Amelia also has problems with blindly following rules without fully understanding them. She finds it distasteful. This can be due to her sometimes over analytical nature wherein she succumbs to perfectionism applied to herself and other people. This antipathy to rules and tendency to over-analyze and be arrogant, all adds up to Amelia often being clueless in dating and romantic situations.

Amelia was raised a Catholic. She still considers herself a Catholic despite what she knows. Even if Father Lacoste has explained to her that God likely does not exist, the thought of the old teachings comforts her. The point of religion has always been to withhold truth from the common people, which is something that becomes increasingly probable as one learns about the existence of the Void. Amelia has found herself praying to Christ more than anyone or anything else. Father Lacoste explained that the man did exist, but was more likely the most talented Mystic in human history rather than God's son. Christ's consciousness might still linger in the Void somewhere, it is believed.

Amelia hopes that the connection between the Void and the real world will permanently close some day. However, she realizes that it would mean for her own life to end. If such an endeavor would guarantee that no child would have to experience the horror that she and many others have, Amelia would gladly end her own life. She believes that humanity is good for as long as their environment is good. Should the Void be unleashed upon the world, the environment would turn dark and soon thereafter the heart of humanity would as well. Amelia genuinely fears such an event.

A P P E A R A N C E
Amelia stands at 163 centimeters (5'4") with a slim figure. Her hair is naturally black, but with assorted highlights when the mood strikes. Her attire during the day is formal-casual due to work, but during nocturnal activities the attire changes into dark clothing, which consists of a t-shirt, skinny jeans, bomber jacket, and sneakers.

W A R F A R E
Amelia's unique mysticism is telepathy. She can hear and see voices and cryptic visions and dreams of other entities. Unlike the fictional version of the ability, Amelia cannot control whose mind she connects to. It is all random based on factors she do not fully understand. Sometimes she can get overwhelmed and suffer migraine. Non-prescription pain relievers can dampen the effect, but never entirely.

Other than Amelia's ability to use techniques of the Void, she is not particularly adept at fighting violent confrontations with cultists or void beings. She has received some training in fencing and carries a ceremonial sword given to her by Father Lacoste. Through some interaction with The Division agents, she has also learned the basics of shooting firearms, but she carries no guns of her own. What she does own herself is a bell that she bought from a peculiar shop. It is her chosen method of conducting the Void into the real world, as taught by Father Lacoste.

However, Amelia is rather skillful at using void techniques in the heat of the moment. She has a keen sense of reading the Void and how much attention she is drawing to herself. Her combat style, if there ever was one, would be agility and using the environment to overcome the enemy. Phasing and Dampening are her most frequently used void techniques.

P R E L U D E
One might be forgiven for not expecting much from a man like Ansgar. Born to a supply officer in the German Army, and his mother a doctor with her own establishment that she practiced at, his life was slated to be a relatively quiet one. Either follow in his father's footsteps, into the ranks of pencil pushing officers, or in his mother's footsteps as a doctor. Both respectable and necessary professions in life, no the most glamorous, but certainly nothing to be ashamed of. Yet, for reasons he will not speak of carelessly, Ansgar was ashamed of where he came from. His parents sat back and let others fight their battles for them, and against both their wishes joined the German Federal Police, with one singular goal in mind. Gain admission into the elite ranks of the GSG-9 Counter terrorism unit. An organization that only one in five applicants can make it into, and without the backing of his family, one could be forgiven to think he would not be readily making it through the difficult process

Yet, 22 weeks after beginning his training, Ansgar stood proudly among the few that were successful in their training, to be accepted into the ranks of the GSG-9. He had invited both his parents to the ceremony, neither of them showed, which hardly surprised him at this point. Disowned by family, he found a new one with his brothers and sisters in arms, deploying in counter terrorism missions that remain classified, acting as an ordinance specialist, both in the EOD and deployment of explosives sense, often breaching into rooms that he could not hack the electronic controls of, a rarity indeed. Being constantly on loan to other GSG-9 units in need of the extra explosives and technical assistance never gave Ansgar the sense of camaraderie with any single unit, being on constant rotation on a needs of the mission basis. This would eventually be both his saving grace and damning flaw, when he would find himself face to face with the Void.

The mission was supposed to be like any other, a kidnapping ring had been snatching people off the streets at night and one too many had gone missing in too short a time span. Intelligence operations had pinpointed a bizarre cult that had, by autopsies of the remains dumped into the rivers, been engaging in cannibalistic murder rituals. Their compound was based out of a World War 2 era bunker complex, abandoned by the local populace to further distance themselves from the sins of the past, leaving them as a monument to the atrocities of the past, and a warning against them happening again. With most of the complex underground, and maps likely outdated and no longer accurate, it was a blind plunge that did not sit well with the GSG-9. Yet, they had their orders, as simple as their superiors worded them. Storm the compound, arrest any who surrender, lethal force authorized, and rescue any survivors. Life is hardly ever that simple, of course.

Word of the cult and the impending assault on the compound had reached the Department of Paranormal Surveillance and they were quick to offer the assistance of the Division. However, at the time the officials in charge of the operation put little faith in this group of 'state sponsored witch hunters' in his own words and denied the Division any access to the mission. The decision would cost nearly a hundred GSG-9 operatives their lives, the teams split up to assault each known entrance into the compound simultaneously. It was a disaster, the operatives ill equipped to handle the unknown Mystics that had been organizing the cult operations. Void creatures resilient to conventional gunfire slaughtered many of the operatives, and Ansgar would find himself cut off, trapped and hunted in the halls of the bunker. The assault had killed all but one Mystic, yet he was behind defenses that no mere bullet could pass through.

Between running skirmishes with the cultists, and flat out running from the remaining creatures, Ansgar would stumble across an old munitions cache, ignored by the cult, and undocumentd due to the locals steadfast refusal to enter such a dark place. Anti tank weapons from WW2 were stockpiled, and the then agnostic Ansgar took a gamble. There was no promise that the munitions would still work, hell, that they wouldn't detonate in the Panzerschrek the moment he fired the thing. But he was able to worm his way back through the compound, confronting their leading mystic. The first shot went wide, unaccustomed as Ansgar was to the weapon and, perhaps, lack of maintenance aiding in the missed shot. But that missed shot hit the alter that ritually bound the void beings to this world, and the atmosphere of dread and horror was gone, as was the creature looming behind him. Ansgar had his orders, take him alive if possible, but a second rocket made his decision clear. The munitions caused sympathetic detonations in the stored munitions the cult had stockpiled for their planned revolution, burying Ansgar alive.

It took several days of starvation and inability to move before he was dug out, not by the German officials, but by Division personnel. After the reports of what had been found in the complex were made, the Department of Paranormal Surveillance was quick to move in, citing the lack of cooperation by the official for the losses. They're original intent was to uncover how the cult had done what it had, but all they found was the unconscious Ansgar, already listed KIA by his superiors along with the hundred other operatives. He was nearly dead, a few more minutes would have led to death by asphyxiation, but he was nursed back to life. However, being buried with the darker things of the Void did not do his mind many favors, and one would have to forgive his feverish hatred and horror towards anything Void related, only matched by how calm and menial he is outside of work. Despite the trauma induced mental injuries, the Division had use for someone who could face the Void and those that would wield it, and survive to see another day.

I D E O L O G Y
Ansgar is a man of two faces, something that can be rather jarring to those that only see him at work, and those that only readily see him at peace. However, what might define him most is his hatred of anything Void related. Most Division members are distrustful or outright hate the Void, but the extent that Ansgar feels it at could be considered unhealthy at best. He is barely able to not lash out at Mystics, even those allied with him, and it takes the explicit orders of his superiors to ensure this. Even then, the zeal that his hate inspires him to when combating the Void is unsettling, like he carries a burden from his near death experience in the ruins of that bunker complex that transcends human hatred. Indeed, for a man who used to be so content with helping his comrades first, and fighting second, the energy and eagerness he has for inflicting harm upon the void is jarring to those who used to know him well.

At peace, Ansgar is a quiet man, friendly and approchable, but not loud. He would as much prefer to spend time in a study, or a workshop, reading up on the latest advances in technology or integrating the latest advances, always pushing that edge as far as he could to get one step above the Void. His work is as much a way to center himself and distract himself from the past, and the all consuming hate, as it is getting a leg up on the enemy. As such, as friendly as he may be off work, interrupting his workshop or research time without good cause is a ready irritant. And he is almost always working, if he isn't asleep, feverish with memories of the past, so someone is almost always interrupting his work. But, if the reason is sound, he will be understanding. Just, one would be warned to not waste his time if he is working.

When on the field, another part of him comes through. It was observed, during his time with the GSG-9, that he tended to split hsi work persona and his civilian persona, to protect the latter from the harsh realities of what must be done during the former. Not enough to warrant concern, just a foot note in his dossier. After his traumatic near death experience, the line in the sand became more defined, and the extremes more jarring. At work, he his focused and cruel, no mercy and follows his orders to the letter with no concerns of the morality or the long term reprecussions. He has a job, and he is there to follow orders, regardless of whether he agreed with them or not. It makes for a good soldier, but a terrible leader, and more than once has he done questionable things under orders, fully aware that following orders was no defense in a court of law, should the time arise.

Ansgar is an atheist, although not always. He used to simply lack any professed faith, an agnostic, as while he had not once believed there was no God, he also could not rationalize ever knowing there was one. It was a key difference he had to explain quite a few times. However, after his experiences with the Void, he has given up on their ever being a God. Looking at the doctrine and beliefs of religions in general, he cannot fathom that if there was a deity of any sort, and that it meant well for its creations, that it would allow such things as the Void to exist. Humans going bad, he could rationalize not intervening, as that was humanity making its choices. But an external, inhuman entity like the Void? That was beyond human fault, ergo, a god like deity would have cause to intervene. As such, if it does not, either it is more malefic than it appears, or it does not exist. Considering the trouble they already deal with, Ansgar prefers the latter idea.

A P P E A R A N C E

Ansgar stands just under 5'6" tall, rather short compared to many of his peers and the point of poking fun at him. He weighs just under 150lbs as well, not an ounce of fat on his frame from the conditioning required to carry the heavier ordinance and tech gear needed for given missions. His frame doesn't show it, being built as lean and wiry, deceptively easy to overlook (no pun intended) and more than capable in pulling his own weight. He usually prefers his GSG-9 style combat fatigues over straight up armor, and even then, much like many members of his former unit, he is as comfortable responding in civilian attire, with the vest thrown on top, as he is being in full gear.

W A R F A R E
When it comes to weapons, Ansgar has a few preferences. Explosives being the highest, but not always the most pragmatic. As such, he typically prefers a G36A2 rifle, attached with a hand tooled 40mm AG36 attachment, modified for higher exit velocity and, rather disturbingly, a complete removal of the fuse delay before priming. He has argued that, facing what the Division does, he cannot afford the risk of having to bring something down and a safety feature preventing it, even if it would injure or kill him. As a sidearm he prefers a USP Elite, chambered in .45 caliber, with no attachments at all. No frills, nothing fancy outside the gun itself, it is a backup to his rifle and is on his person at all times.

However, he isn't brought along for his firearms, adept as they may be used, and his specialty is in electronics and ordinance. He has a kit that he fastens to his leg, much like a First Aid Kit, that contains common tools for bomb defusing and disposal, while it lacks the full versatility of a EOD operative in full bomb suit and kit, it is vastly more mobile and lightweight. Second is an arm mounted PDA, military grade, that he utilizes for bypassing electronic security measures. When the need for subtle bypass of doors is required, either the PDA or a lockpicking set kept in a compartment on the armguard, which he refuses to disclose the details on beyond it works.

When subtly isn't required, Ansgar gladly resorts to his explosives. Typically, he carries HEF Grenades, High Explosive Fragmentation, a custom retooling utilizing a far higher explosive core to make it of limited use against lightly armored vehicles, or equivalent Void beings, as the sheer power of the detonation ruptures armor to a degree. Granted, they are heavier and take more muscle strength to lob a equivalent distance, and lose out on some fragmentation effect, but these hardly bother Ansgar. When tactically necessary, he can bring a variety of explosives such as breaching charges, concussive and flash grenades, demolition munitions (C4 being the most iconic example), as well as pyrotechnics such as White Phosphorus, or Less than Lethal tools such as tear gas canisters. Of course, he obviously cannot carry ALL these options at once, but considering his otherwise lightweight set up, he can pack a surprising amount of explosives.

+ Claustrophobic to a degree
+ Cover jobs usually involve pyrotechnics or police work
+ Dearly misses Germany, finding it far more agreeable than the States
+ Has practical training in most explosive deployment methods
+ Has an odd fascination with historic weaponry and tactics

Sara has no memory of what her childhood was like before the Void. She first entered the Void when she was just starting to walk, and the traumatic experience threw her into such a state that if she had been older, she simply would have gone mad. As it was, the experience completely transformed the young girl, irrevocably tying her life to the Void. When Sara returned to our world, alone and not knowing who or where she was, she began to blindly use Void powers, broadcasting loudly that she was a Mystic. If she had been taken by the Division, it's likely that Laura would have become a Mystic serving the Division. As it was, cultists found her first, and hid the young Mystic. Since then, Laura has been raised among the cult of the Hidden God. The cult is based in the Bay Area, and Sara adopted the public persona of a happy-go-lucky young woman. Sara was involved in track and field at her public highschool, and had many loose friends through her childhood. But behind closed doors, Laura was an up and coming Mystic prodigy, rising in the ranks of her cult until she had become next in line to become a high priestess. Sara's incredible strength as a Mystic, her intense devotion to the Hidden God, and her willingness to do whatever it takes to advance the cause of the Church of the Hidden God, has earned her a modest reputation for herself as a deadly foe to cross. Laura is now enrolled as a college student at Cal Berkeley, intending to achieve a higher public standing, helping spread the influence of the Hidden God. Laura has met the Division several times in the Void, sometimes helping them on behalf of her order, and other times hunting and killing Division units.

Sara's personality is almost split into two harsh dichotemies. One is a bubbly, excited college student who likes to wear bright colors and is studying law with the stated desire to 'change the world.' And the other is cold, fierce disciple of a Void cult, having murdered nearly a dozen people in her time. Sara worships an entity in the Void that her cult refers to as 'The Hidden God.' The Hidden God purportedly communicates with the highest ranking members of the cult, who then direct the other members in their actions.

A short young woman with lightly tanned skin, thick curly hair, and pale blue eyes. When in public, she dresses in loose flowing sundresses, paisley, and otherwise cheerful colors with strappy sandals. When she serves the Order, Sara pulls her hair into a tight bun, dresses in a dark navy padded motorcycle jacket, dark jeans, and sturdy shoes.

piano wire garotte, machete, switchblade stiletto, sawed off shotgun, lighter. Sara's special Mystic ability is to summon fog that will rapidly expand, choking and obscuring. The fog will rapidly fill a closed room, and dissipates after several minutes. The furthest that Laura has spread the fog was a city block, though that took a solid hour. Occasionally, the fog that emerges from the Void is flammable, and when ignited erupts into flames, burning everything in the fog. Sara has developed a preternatural ability to navigate effortlessly through the fog, and is able to ambush and surprise anyone caught in the fog.

Sara's name had been chosen and made up by her. Sara Bernhardt was a 19th century actress, and Sara adopted her name for her public life. Her contacts in the Void know her only as Sara. Sara plays track and field for Cal Berkeley.

CÉDRIC QUINT

P R E L U D E
Cédric was born in the city of Marseille, France, as the son of a Policemen and a Nurse. Growing up in the poor north of the city, he had to witness how his loving father slowly turned towards the Drinking, as a wound after an car accident left him paralyzed in the right side of his body. At the age of seven, his parents divorced, leaving Cédric and his two younger sisters in a shattered wreckage of a home. Facing violent abuse from both his alcoholic father, and the new boyfriend of their mother, Cédric began to spend most of his youth with friends outside on the streets.

With sheer luck and tricking, he was able to finish his education, and even to pursue a career as a police officer, just like the father he remembered from his early youth. But his friends had taken different paths, and soon, he would be torn between turning an blind eye towards their illegal activities, and his duty as a soon-to-be policeman. It was at the age of twenty, when he was celebrating a friends birthday at his apartment, when the police came to arrest everyone inside. It turned out, that his friend had began to mingle in the drug trade, and only his fathers reputation, and old connections could protect Cédric from ending in jail, yet the mere connection to this raid, was enough to justify his dishonorable discharge, even through, he wasnt even an fully trained cop yet.

In the same year, his father died, and to much surprise, left quite an inheritance for his children. With a grim knowledge about the nature of this money, holding a stench of drugs on it, Cédric thought it best to leave France behind, and start a new life in the USA. Settling down in Boston at the age of 21, he lied about his past, as well as his age, claiming to be a former member of the France "Gendarmerie nationale", and adjusted his age to fit his story. Rather then trying his luck with the Boston Police Department, he lived on his money for a time, acting as a "Private Investigator" when asked for his profession. Rather soon, he even rented to take an office, and a mere year later, "Quint Private Investigation" was born.

The job sounded far more thrilling then it actually was, but the lack of money, and other skills kept Cédric on spying on runaway lovers, cheating partners and employees. He worked just as much as he needed, which was quite a lot, since he still lived far over his earnings, with flamboyant parties, fast romances, and an weakness for other expensive luxuries. Debts started to build up, and soon, Cédric himself was under investigation himself, for more then one loan Shark wanted its money back.

It was in this dire situation that he was offered a strange, anonymous contract. For a ridiculous amount of money, he had to find a young child, which had been taken by "Men in Dark Robes". Unable to refuse, he took the contract, and had his first contact with the void, but with sheer luck, bravado and stupidity, was not only able to survive, but also to safe the little girl. Finding out that she was an orphan, and with nowhere to go, he took her in, and soon adopted her. Her name was Natalie, five years old by then, and the only woman he ever would stay loyal to.

Unable to understand what had happened, he found out that all his debts had been payed for. Confused, disturbed and frightened by his memories of the rescue, he escaped into drinking, other woman, and the duties of a spoiling father, doing his best to help the traumatized Natalie to overcome her dark memories. It took only a month for him to be once more in a position, where he was unable to refuse a anonymous contract! Three years of a devilish circle would follow. Each contract would take him deeper into the influence of the void, and each time he returned more traumatized, and more damaged from what he had witnessed. Soon not even his old vices could offer solace, and his only anchor of sanity was his little girl, who he swore to always protect from the horrors that once almost had claimed her life.

It was after the third year, that he would met his clients for the first time, on the day of Natalies eight birthday. Visiting a amusement park with her, he only spend a single moment leaving her alone, before she vanished. In Panic, Cédric wanted to look for her, only to have a man place a note with an address in his hand. Following it, he came to a rundown Motel, in which he would find Natalie, as well as a man, wearing a fine suit, who spoke with a strange accent and reeking of Lavender. One more time, Cédric would have to take on one last Contract from "the Loyalist Society", but this time, failure would cost Natalies life.

The contract that would take him to a small town in Alaska was the one that send him over the edge. Send there to find out about the whereabouts of a young mystic. To this day, Cédric is unable to recall what has happened in the three weeks he was in this town, but the last thing that he could remember is that he entered the Chapel and the ever present smell of Lavender.

He was found by a truck driver, wandering aimlessly through trough the snow, near starvation, and with bleeding eyes. The next five years, Cédric spend in an Asylum near Boston, haunted by strange memories of ruins in a dark mist, and places he never had been. Suffering from a terrible Schizophrenia, paired with hallucinations, and fits of mindless rage, he was declared terminally insane.

Things changed, as all of the sudden, any symptoms of his insanity vanished, and Cédric returned to a state of mental stability over night. The doctors of the Asylum wanted to keep him in for further surveillance, but a call from the Department of Paranormal Surveillance changed their mind. Released from the Asylum, missing five years of his life, Cédric was greeted by two agents of Department of Paranormal Surveillance, outside the gates of the Asylum. They told him that Natalie had been placed in a loving foster Family, and was unharmed. She even had visited him almost every week, until his state had exacerbated, that the asylum had forbade it.

Seeing her finally happy, and overcoming her past, Cédric knew that if he would return into her life, she would once more be confronted with the horrors she had went through. With nowhere else to go, he accepted the offer to work as a freelancing agent and adviser for the DPS, under the condition that Natalie would be get a fully paid collage education, and protection from the "Loyalist Society".

I D E O L O G Y
The driving force behind every action made by Cédric since his release from the asylum, is a burning desire to protect a world from the Void. Seeing himself not as a warrior, he still is able to show a foolhardy bravery if needed, that many see as the boldness of a man who has nothing more to lose. Willing to give his last against the Void, his fear of the void has turned into a fatalistic acceptance of its existence, and nihilistic view on the human nature itself in comparison towards it. Convinced that Humanity is indeed fighting a losing battle, he sees his duty to resist for the sake of resisting, and protection what one holds dear.

This view on the world has led him to develop quite a cold personality, which left him uncaring for most people he works with. Still, he is able to put up a mask of a charismatic Investigator, if the situation should require it.

A P P E A R A N C E
Standing 6'2" tall, he has a rather slim look to him, even trough he is still quite sportive for his age. Soon getting into his early forties, his hair has already a few shades of grey in them. His eyes are narrow, and lay deep, mostly with dark circles right beneath them.

Above his eyes are deep, white scares, whos origin never was truly confirmed. The doctors inside the asylum believed them to be the result of a desperate attempt to claw his own eyes out, but further medical investigation has shown that these cuts couldn't come from a human fingernail.

In terms of clothing has Cédric embraced the "Film Noir" look. Mostly in trench-coats, vests and fitting pants. Dressing sharply and expensive, he has a taste for the finer things in life, and as such is seldom seen in private without an expensive watch and a fitting pair of sunglasses.

W A R F A R E
During his time in the Service of the "Loyalist Society" he was provided with a few artifacts to aid in his missions. They seldom provided any explanation, except how it was to use, so Cédric had to find most information's about the origin of his possessions himself.

-An M1911 Pistol, no an artifact, but just a practical tool for self defense. He mostly carries it in an holster under his arms on the left side

-An Mars Automatic Pistol, serial number 81, created by Rudolf Altberg-Ehrenstein, an Occultist and member of the Thule Society, during the period between the two world wars, wrote a number of books about the nature of the Void (of which few still exist, and all that do are highly valued for its insight into the Void). He also had theories, about the way both dimensions were connected, and that places of great Emotional Turmoil where more "Loud" for the void, and as such able to drown out its own influence. To proof his point, he convinced Hugh Gabbet-Fairfax to create one last handgun, made out of steel of bayonets from the field of Verdun. With a firm believe, to have created the ultimate weapon against the void, he vanished shorty after, never to be seen again.
Gifted the weapon by an courier, Cédric found the weapon effective against the beings of the Void, but far from being the "the ultimate Weapon". Besides that, it is not uncommon that people hear whispers, screams of even have short flashbacks of others lifes, when holding this weapon.

-A music box, creator Unknown, playing the "Tannhäuser-Marsch". Little is know about its creation, or even by whom it has been build. Every person who holds onto the box, when playing, is invisible for anyone with a deep connection to the void, yet the music itself remains. Finding it out the hard way, anyone who holds onto the box, also cant harm anyone affected by the box. After two minutes of playing the cord needs to be turned back for at least four minutes.

-The head of an small angle Figurine, creator unknown, also linked towards the "Thule Society", due to german writing on its bottom. The head starts to smile as soon as the person travels into the void, and frowns as soon as one finds himself in the real world. The head also forms a smirk at anyone who is using the Void, and screams, without a sound, at anyone who is possessed by it.

T R I V I A

L O N D O N R E A V I S

P R E L U D E
London was born into a wealthy family living in New York City. Though rumors were abound as to how the Reavis family obtained their money, they still were among New York's top elite. Nothing happened that they didn't hear about or have their hand in. Her father was a powerful business mogul, buying up property left and right and her mother was a socialite and owned a chain of clothing stores. Her mother went right back to work shortly after giving birth, leaving London to the hands of the nanny, Amelia.

Talk of the Void was nonexistent in their household. If it didn't provide them with status or funds they wanted little to do with it. Despite this, London found herself consumed by the Void when she was little out with Amelia. Her parents were furious at Amelia and accused her of planning it herself, revealing that they always knew she was a Mystic. Despite her claims of having no hand in it, they dismissed her. A few weeks passed before London made it back safely. Having come back from the Void and lived to tell, London was forever changed. Her parents disowned her and refused to talk to her, but Amelia returned to take her away. She trained the young girl and taught her about the Void and the dangers and benefits of her trip. She also discussed the danger of being branded a Mystic. She would be targeted, abused, scoffed at, and worse if possible. It would be best if she hid it as much as she could.

As the years went on, London practiced her Void abilities in secret. Careful not to let it get too far (and having Amelia a few feet away at all times) allowed her to hone her skills. She gradually became aware of a unique gift granted to her. She was able to enter the Void and come out inside a person in a twisted sense of possession. She was able to control the person for brief periods of time and come back. Amelia was both proud and worried and her fears were met when the Division came knocking. Upset that Amelia hid London from them for so long they took London with them, despite protests. Amelia tried to reason with them, to beg them to at least take her with them so London would have someone she knows, but she was denied. London hasn't seen her since.

At the age of 18, London was taken to Portsmouth where she was contained in their Mystic facility. Conflicts of interest weighed heavily in the girl's mind. Was she upset at her Mystic background for tearing her away from her family or was she mad at the Division for treating her like a monster and taking her away from a normal life? Her family didn't want her and the Division had to have her. Despite everything, she was an outcast to her Mystic comrades and made very few friends there. One such friend was a boy named Michael. He told her that, yeah, she could be angry if she wanted to, but she could also use her abilities for good, for better. To help the Division understand the Void, to help save other Mystics, to stop Void beings from taking over. He asked her to sign up with him. Reluctantly, she agreed.

Now, years later, London maintains a semi-normal lifestyle. She has a job, a social life, and, when needed, is an asset to the Division. Despite her help, she has been talking to other Mystics about the possibility of joining them in their fight against the Division. She also still talks to Michael, who is a Division advocate. Torn between two sides, she still hasn't made up her mind about whose side she is on.

I D E O L O G Y
Some would call London a diva due to her lifestyle choices. She has a cushy job and a nice apartment and set of friends. She doesn't dispute these claims, but instead does her best to allow her actions to speak for herself, rather than her words. She is headstrong and driven, but can easily switch into inquisitive and questioning when there is something she doesn't understand. She can be a friendly person, but she knows that a person can be gone in an instant and doesn't maintain many close relationships.

London is torn between two sides. She believes that Mystics aren't something to be contained like animals and, worse, killed off because they had no choice in the matter, but she also believes the Division helps them by finding them and spiriting them away, less they cause Void anomolies and summon Void beings to their world. Both aren't without their faults and both call on her to be an ally when they need. She tries to keep them a secret from each other, which is no small feat.

London doesn't really follow a religion. She doesn't deny the existence of a possible God, but questions why God would create or continue to maintain something like the Void when it causes so much damage. She doesn't go out of her way to attend church or find like-minded individuals, but she won't deny a person their own beliefs.

She has no qualms about killing but prefers it be the last resort. She would rather Mystics and the Division get along but knows that it won't likely happen and worries that a war between the two is on the horizon.

A P P E A R A N C E
London stands at 5'7'' and weighs 125 lbs. She has long, blonde hair, blue eyes, and a peach skin tone. She has a floral tattoo on her left hip. She typically wears dresses, skirts, blouses, light jackets, and heels, especially when she is out and about for work or social gatherings. On any other day, she likes wearing leggings and t-shirts and simple sneakers or boots. She usually wears clothing in red, pink, silver, or black. She wears make-up, usually lip gloss, blush, and eyeshadow in darker colors. She has a necklace with Amelia's name on it, in silver, that she wears often, as a reminder.

W A R F A R E
London's unique Void power is the ability to possess other people. She does so by entering the void and exiting into another person. She is able to control the person by walking and talking and can do any other action she normally could. The person themselves goes into a "sleep state" and are unaware they are being controlled. They don't remember anything they did during possession. After she exits the person, they fall unconscious for a brief period of time. If the person were to be killed, London would be shot back into the Void and would have to exit back into the world. This would be painful for her.

Other than that, she knows basic firearms. She has a handgun for her time with the Division. She also owns a dagger for her encounters with the rogue Mystics. She uses both sparingly, preferring recognizance and subterfuge to get results, but she is not afraid to use either weapon in drastic circumstances.

She can use basic Void techniques given her practice. She usually relies on Tendrils to get her places and protect her, can create Anomalies in order to use her possession skill, and uses Equalize when she needs to.

T R I V I A
  • She lives in the Financial district in an apartment, close to her work.
  • She works as a magazine editor/secretary to the head of the magazine.
  • She loves pasta
  • Her favorite color is silver
  • She has killed before. Some due to accidents, some on purpose. They still weigh on her mind.
  • She doesn't know if Amelia is still alive. Neither has tried to maintain any contact.
  • Her mother has called out to her to establish a relationship again. London told her off and the two haven't spoken since.
  • Michael has strong feelings for her that she doesn't reciprocate. She can't commit to him if she doesn't truly believe in what he stands for.
  • She is 24 years old.

Arthur Henderson

P R E L U D E
Born to an affluent British businessman, of whose description Arthur is not party to, and a Brooklyn born woman who worked as a 'Call Girl', this young man's early life could hardly be described as either supportive or loving. While aware of his father's identity, Arthur has never met the man nor received any gift directly from him beyond the money paid for his silence on the matter of his parentage. On the other hand, his mother rather dangerously retired from her career and evaded the clutches of her controlling pimp, hoping that a move to Maine and its associated troubles would fend off all but the most determined of pursuits.

Still, it would be a mistake to assume that Arthur lived a hard early life as the offspring of an out of work prostitute. His mother, and after her passing he in turn, was and still is paid a handsome sum, or a pension as his distant father refers to it as, for upkeep. While not absurdly comfortable, there was no notion of a return visit by his father, Arthur has never been left wanting or fighting for scraps. After his mother's passing the payments reduced in value drastically but still assured him a decent income even without supplementary work. Which is just as well as Arthur has much to occupy his time without including the trials of employment, due to his being a mystic.

Having few memories of his childhood as a whole, Arthur has but a vague remembrance of venturing in the Void as a toddler. Momentarily free from his mother's grasp, he found himself within the Void and beyond that his memories are increasingly blurred. He mostly recalls that time within his dreams and each time the events change, the encounters he has and the experience distorted to the point he has dismissed all such recollections and looks to his more recent ventures which he can remember with much more clarity.

However, study of the Void has consumed the vast majority of his adolescent life to date. His mother passed without much fanfare, few close connections formed in their new home to protect against pursuit from her former employer, leaving him free to chase whichever desire took his fancy. She had carefully been squirreling away funds for his future life, presumably for a university path of one kind or another, but instead Arthur purchased their home and ensured he would have sufficient income through careful investment, alongside the continued cross-Atlantic payments from his father, to instead spend his time studying the Void and its intrusions upon the real world.

Much of this learning has been invested in the study of music, the link between sound and the Void being a well documented one amongst certain circles. While he is no natural virtuoso, Arthur has learned to employ various musical instruments in his ventures as well more basic forms of sound in an emergency, such as whistling. His preferred instrument is of bells, seven varying in size and strapped into a bandoleer for no reason other than his childhood adoration of the author Garth Nix and his peculiar take on Necromancy involving seven bells; even his intellectual mind could not resist the flavors of early life's influence.

Somewhere along the way, in his studies, this young man decided that The Division was well intentioned in its attempts to limited the impact of the Void upon normal life but misguided in its mistrust in all things Void-related. Arthur has a strong belief in Mystics and their importance in resolving the issues the Void poses, rather than being merely a symptom of it. Often he will employ vaccination as a metaphorical example although it is not one that stands up to much scrutiny. Fond of his daily life as it stands, simple with an intellectual pursuit of something that consistent defies standard academic study (the Void itself), Arthur would rather than any forthcoming calamity be avoided so that he can pursue his interest with little interference and as such will ally with the Division where he can, although without revealing himself where possible.

I D E O L O G Y
Born into the several dysfunctional 'family' that he was, Arthur's upbringing involved little to no religious thought, education or influence. While he was aware of religion in and of itself, it was through his study of the Void that he learned most of the major faiths; specifically in relation to the Void. As such he holds no faith himself, choosing not to tackle such a complex topic when he has the juicy and as yet largely unexplored subject of the Void to map out. Still, if pressed he may identify as Agnostic, unswayed by the arguments of the particularly evangelical sects but also disinterested in the harsh tones of the hardline atheists. With the existence of something like the Void, this young man finds it hard to completely disregard any idea of deities, religion or belief but equally finds the institutionalised regimes of doctrinal faith to be far too restrictive for his own taste.

As a person he is independent almost to the point of being self-involved. So absorbed is he in his pursuit of knowledge, not only of the Void but of wisdom and information in general, that he lacks key communication and social skills and moves independently to most life. When he comes across others, particularly in relation to the Void, he may treat them as a symptom of the events occurring rather than a person. That is not to say that he is unemotional and does not recognise the importance of human life but it certainly gives him an air of near-complete detachment. Despite this, he is someone who naturally inclines to kindness and compassion especially to those in need, more so when those are younger than himself.

When it comes to the Void as a general concept and whether is good or evil, Arthur has no hard or fast beliefs and his views are open to influence from others although more so when he is observing rather than when his being preached to.

A P P E A R A N C E
Arthur stands at a mere five foot, nine inches tall. At the age of twenty one he is fully grown and his height is perhaps the only source of inferiority he ever feels, often standing in the shadow of those his own age although particularly men. He has an athlete's frame although not one that is well support by muscle, being somewhat of an armchair academic. Still, he exercises regularly and is in good shape leaving him at a little over 180 pounds with no excess fat on his lean frame. He has relatively broad shoulders, having grown into them in his adolescence, and a broad face. His eyes are a bright blue although often appear darker when seen through the lenses of his glasses while his hair is a dark blond, cut short and combed sideways with no gel products used. From time to time he may even sport a short and carefully trimmed beard although that largely depends on the time of year. He has no particularly distinctive features and finds it easy to slip into a crowd.

Year round he tends to wear suit trousers, a short-sleeved but still formal shirt with a v-neck jumper. During the cooler months of spring and Autumn he will often wear a matching suit jacket and in the coldest depths of winter, or when he intends to interact with the Void, he will wear a charcoal greatcoat. Whenever wearing a jacket he will also wear a grey or black fedora, his sole accessory.

W A R F A R E
Arthur's unique void power is that of Levitation. He largely uses this when dropping long distances to prevent or minimise any damage from the fall rather than lifting himself up onto higher ground as the latter takes longer and would attract unwanted attention. He largely prefers to stay away from combat, although he likes to observe the Division from a safe distance, and will often camp out on high buildings for a better vantage point. When he needs to withdraw quickly he can simply walk off the edge of a building and slow his descent in the final moments to land safely and without fanfare and out of sight.

That being said, he is no fool, and carries a M1911, along with a custom made bell for interaction with the Void, with him when going to 'observe' anomalies when the chances of danger are significantly heightened. While he has the required papers to purchase and carry a weapon he prefers not to draw the unwanted attention a concealed weapon could do at the best of times. If worst comes to worst he has the other Void abilities that most Mystics have in common to defend himself but his greatest strength remains in his anonymity and so he will tend to avoid conflict wherever possible.
