Fallen Realms: The Ruins of Ironshore

The Map

More areas will be revealed as the RP progresses. Players intent on wandering off can ask for the whole thing so they don't fall into the sea, but it'll be missing landmarks.

Introductory Scene

The Cutlass lumbers through an endless fog.

For six long and bitter months, she has sailed the far reaches of the worlds’ forgotten oceans; searching for a land that may not exist. Many have died on this expedition, either from hunger, exhaustion, illness or the cold embrace of the unforgiving waters. The sailors, and their guests, are becoming wearisome of each other. Mutiny is sweeping the ranks, and the Captain has not arisen from his quarters for days.

There is no more food, no more wine and no more patience. It is a matter of hours before something snaps, and the Cutlass’s deck becomes the scene of a senseless melee. Men sharpen their blades, and load their rifles; women cluster together, fortifying themselves in secrecy so that they do not prove vulnerable prey to the impending madness of their male crewmates.

Someone, a young man with a sparse beard, knocks shoulders with an older fellow as they navigate the deck’s treacherous surface. This simple act of impeded coordination is the starting spark of an ungodly inferno.

The young man screams, the old man roars. There’s a splash. Of two, there is now one. Nobody know’s exactly what happened, and nobody cares. Rifles are brought to ready, swords are drawn and magic is kindled. Threats spit from flayed mouths.

The frigate’s resident Chaplain appears in short order, putting himself between the points of sword and bayonet, shouting the will of the Gods. He orders peace, then he pleads for reason, and finally he begs for mercy. None listen. None care. They are all dead men. Someone fires a pistol, and the Chaplain is off to meet his masters in some promised afterlife.

The women huddle below decks, barring doors and arming themselves with whatever they can find. Men are prone to senseless violence in difficult times, and they are often the secondary-victims of such occasions. Not today. They wait in silence; hearts beating fast, lungs tightening.

Someone leans out from the crow’s nest, high above the writhing mass of angry men, “land ahoy, port!”

As if some angelic being of impossible power, had swept down upon the Cutlass and stolen away her crew’s rage and sorrow, the men halt their descent into madness. They all hurry to port, shunting each other to grasp a view of their salvation.

… And there it is. A dark landmass, jutting through the thick fog like a bloated whale corpse, meets their eager eyes. Whatever ill intent held sway amongst them, is replaced instantly by desire for merry making. They have found it – the Captain was right!

Ironshore, realm of the Elderhost, is real.

RP Summary

In this RP, you take on the role of either one of the ship’s sailors, or one of the ‘volunteers’ she is carrying to the island.

The Cutlass’ mission was not just to find the island, but to set up a base of operations upon it, so that the mainland can send further colonisation efforts.

However, the island is largely uncharted, and legends tell of a great evil that holds sway over its entirety. Only one way to find out, right? The Captain needs to know whether it’s safe, and more importantly, what happened to it those many centuries ago.

Suit up, you’re going ashore.

Style of Play

Post Frequency: No rules in place for this, but do NOT leave people hanging. If you clog up a scenario without advanced warning of your absence, I’ll assume you died in some nasty pile up. Speed posting is allowed, so long as the people you’re interacting with can accommodate it and are willing.

Post Length: Minimum length should be a couple of paragraphs. There is no maximum, but if the people you’re interacting with start hinting at their dislike for 2,000 word posts, then I’d advise you listen to them.

Writing Skill: If I can’t understand what you’re saying, and if my eyes bleed when I try, then this is not the RP for you.

Scenario Number: When posting, head your post with the scenario number. This way, we know who is where, and it will cut down the need for people to play catch-up in the invent of a post influx.

Scenario Creation: Players are free to create their own scenarios, if they feel they want to stray from the GM’s nationalised ones. Doing so is easy, simply post your desired scenario in the OOC, and I’ll add it to the list so long as no one has a problem with it.

Joining A Scenario: Check the scenario section to ensure there is room to accommodate you, and if there is, simply make a post with the corresponding scenario number at the top and BOO YAH you’re in.

Leaving A Scenario: You may do so at any time, by moving to another or creating your own.

Profanity: Green light.

Sex: Implied only. Keep it to your filthy PM boxes you weirdos.

NPCs and Scenarios: Some scenarios will have NPCs allocated to them. Sometimes they'll be sailors, sometimes volunteers or a mix. They are background noise, to be used and abused by the players. If the group is being attacked, for example, it might suit a player if an unfortunate sailor gets hit in the face by an arrow - or something.

Notable NPCs: Grown to love your expendable NPCs? Name them! Give them an appearance, and a demeanour, post it on the OOC and I will add them to the Notable NPC List. Also, declare who exactly it is that has control over them; if it's just you, that's fine - or if it's for everyones' discretion, then awesome. Either way, let me know and i'll put it up!
Rules

- Don't be a dick. If I need to specify what being a dick covers, then this RP is not for you, you socially insensitive, egotistical maniac.
Character Sheet

Post your sheets here, in the OOC, and I will add them to the top of this post under the "Active Characters" hider. A link to your character sheet will be included there.

Hurra!

Basics

Full Name: Tala Aranel Ivanova
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Race: Human/elven halfing

Appearance

Physical Description: Clicky for image
As a halfing, Tala takes mostly after her human father. She isn't too tall, just about 160 cm. Her ears are round, but her eyes are unmistakably elvish, as is her smooth skin and body language. Her face is usually mostly obscured by her anthracite hair, red hood and equally colored scarf. Her build is lean and agile and obviously not strong.

Clothing and armor:
When in comfortable environment such as a house or ship cabin, Tala likes to wear a long grey skirt and loose blouse of the same color, coupled with her brown work apron, so she can have her tools at hand at all times. Her outfit for outside consists of warm tunic and pants with hard leather pads sewn on to allow traversing rough terrain easily and without damage to the apparel. While the outfit is relatively sturdy, it offers next to no protection in a fight. Omnipresent is her red hooded cloak, often paired with a scarf of the same color. Her shoes are a pair of sturdy combat boots.

Other:
She wears a ring which is a symbol of her membership and rank in the alchemist's guild. The ring is made of gold with 4 runes and 4 gemstones spaced equally around it's circumference, each pair representing one of the four elements. The ring ranks her as a member. Tala also always carries a leather satchel with a trapped lock (Releases a charge of extremely potent mixture of itching powder and pepper extract if opened the wrong way), in which she keeps a basic field tools as well as some supplies and her money.

Background

Faction: Volunteer

A daughter of a farmer, Tala spent her childhood working on the field. Her mother died giving her birth, leaving her without a woman figure in her life. Naturally a bit lazy person, instead of slacking off Tala found herself ways to make her work easier, tinkering with the tools. Having no desire to live without his wife, not even for his child, Tala's father withered and perished in the following winter, leaving the 10 year old Tala orphaned.

Taken by an alchemist from the orphanage at the age of 14, Tala worked in the house as a maid, and often as extra pair of hands for the scientist. Inspired to study the art, she begged her master to teach her, but was shooed away as a lowly woman. It wasn't until she took care of the rat problem in the house with a poison she made herself that her master reconsidered, reluctantly taking her as an apprentice.

He soon discovered the girl had natural talent for the art, partly due to her superior half elven intelligence and senses. when she reached the age of 18, Tala sold her neglected farm to the neighbors and used the money to craft her member's ring. Along with passing the tests given to her by her master, she finally gained membership in the Alchemists' guild. In need of a job, she volunteered for the cutlass, hoping to find rare or new materials on the forgotten island.

Tala doesn't talk too much in a crowd, preferring to stick to her cabin where she either studies or does her thing, be it grinding spices for the ship's cooks or fixing the navigator's sextant. When in a small group or between four eyes though, she is quite friendly and will open up. Unless you visited her, you don't know much of the above.

Moral Alignment

Selflessness: Very 1. If she can run faster than you, she will do so and hope the dragon will be busy eating you while she legs it.

Snobbery: 8. Unless you're a filthy bum with rotten odor, she will not shy from anyone.

Racist Tendencies: Tala is not particularly fond of 'dumb' creatures such as goblins, trolls, orcs... However she will not openly proclaim it, but rather try to avoid their company.

Piety: 3. As an alchemist, she believes quite firmly that nature is governed by set laws and not divine will, but she will admit it all seems too perfect for being a 'coincidence'. In other words, she believes in higher power, but will not call it God.

Justice: 5. Depending on the situation.

Sexist Tendencies: 2. Being on the receiving end of sexist behavior for quite some time, she's not afraid to rub it into Male faces that they are lost without women.

Combat

Main Skills: Tala is no good fighting on her own, but is very effective at supporting others. This is proportional to how much preparation was she able to do - Did she have time to prepare tools? Could she survey the terrain? Is there enough time to lay traps? Are we in defense? - It all counts.

Secondary Skills: She is agile and has high stamina, meaning she can flee really well. Incidentally, it makes her a good messenger.

Primary Weapon: Variety of tools she prepares before engaging - Smoke fizzles, boomsticks, poisons and the like.

Secondary Weapon: Whatever she has on her at the moment, usually supplies form her satchel.

Hidden/Stored Weapons: Tala carries a hunting knife. If she is assisting hunters, she is reasonably skilled with a hunting bow, but lacks the strength to operate the combat ones.

Passive/Support

Main Skills: Tala is an all around alchemist, but her most developed skills concern the part you could call chemistry. She would be easily able to replenish the Cutlass' stores of black powder and able to process ores, cut gemstones and cast metals.

Secondary Skills: The other fields of alchemical studies include engineering (notably clockwork) and pharmacy.

Items of Note: Tala has a large tome of alchemy and her cabin on the cutlass is stacked with herbs and some rarer materials she needs to prepare potions, salves, construct traps and the like.

Anti-Godmod 3000

Achlies’ Heel: Getting surprised and being left alone.

Trivia

- Tala carries a deck of cards on her. Whether the girl is simply a good player or the deck is marked is unknown, but none of the cutlass' crew identified any markings on them yet.
- The girl is a bit vain, using easily recognizable rose perfume of her own making.
- She is very keen on chocolate and hoards a supply stored in a safe place. Do not touch, or face her wrath.
- As an alchemist, she has job based rivalry with mages and secret admiration for thieves.

Basics

Full Name: Argus Ithinial Flinte

Age: 34

Gender: Male

Race: Cindarien
(I hope this is alright? I made up my own race.)

Appearance

Physical Description: Argus is of average height, reaching up to about 5’7” and has a lithe yet muscular build. He has long platinum blonde hair that reaches past his shoulders a good bit that he usually keeps tied up with a dark red ribbon. His eyes are a bright frost blue. His arms are covered in blue runic tattoos.

Clothing:

Armour: Argus wears no armor, as he finds it constricting and cumbersome.

Other:

Background

Faction: Volunteer

What do the others on the expedition know of your character after six months of being cooped up on a boat?
Argus is a grouch and prefers to be left alone in most situations and is very secluded. He will ignore people sometimes when they attempt to talk to him. When he does talk, however, he makes sure everyone in the area knows how smart he is; he is very much a knowitall.

Moral Alignment

Selflessness: 5

Snobbery: 4

Racist Tendencies: 1

Piety: 2.5 (Believes in some sort of higher power, but has not seen actual proof as of yet.)

Justice: 5

Sexist Tendencies: 6

Combat

Main Skills: Argus’s primary combative skills rest upon his swordsmanship and dexterity with some support from his elemental and illusion magic.

Secondary Skills: If Argus is unable to use his sword, exhausts his magical reserves, or just feels like finishing a fight quickly he will depend upon the single pistol he carries in a holster near the back of his left hip.

Primary Weapon: Iver uses his sword in a combination of stabs and slashes due to the shape of the blade as well as his magic as his primary weapons.

Secondary Weapon: Iver also carries a single pistol of Cindarien make with him for sticky situations.

Hidden/Stored Weapons: Argus keeps a small knife coated in poison hidden in his boot.

Passive/Support

Main Skills: Argus is a scholar and historian and knows much of the lore surrounding Ironshore as well as most areas because of his travels. He also has very sharp hearing and can pick most locks.

Secondary Skills: Argus has a small bit of knowledge in the healing arts as well a little bit of ancient languages and runes

Items of Note: Argus carries a small first aid kit, a lockpicking set, several books with him on various subjects, spare shots for his pistol, a few maps, and a blank journal with plenty of ink and pens.

Anti-Godmod 3000

Achlies’ Heel: Argus has a problem with authority figures and will most assuredly refuse to listen to one if he does not have respect for them. Argus is an arrogant man and once he believes he is right it is almost impossible to convince him otherwise. He also thinks himself better than a lot of people and therefore will ignore their input or advice until proven without a shadow of a doubt otherwise.

I figured it would help people with make an entrance, rather than hindering them. I was worried you'd all spend 6 pages worth of posts lowering yourselves into the row boat!

Anyways, I'll start off with a notable NPC as my character, to help you all get the jist of things, and to also kick the plot off. After I'm satisfied everything is moving as it should , I'll either adopt them as my full character, or I'll leave them and go on to create a proper character of my own.

How long do you guys want to wait before starting? Due to the scenario system, and the way it works, new players should be able to blend seamlessly with current events. (He says)

EDIT: OH, and you've all been accepted. See active player lists, top of the 1st post.

I think waiting a bit, maybe an hour or two, to let people siphon in for the start would be nice. If an hour's up and nobody else says anything though? Sure, let's start

I'm an Englishman, I'm afraid, so therefore it's just hit 9pm. Normally not an issue for me on the weekend, but I need to be at the factory for a soul shattering 6am tomorrow; so you know, I need sleep.

I'll leave it for tomorrow, and then we'll see what's what.
