The Last Wizard
RP topic is here!
An Epics 'n Awesomes RP for 3+ players Genre: Adventure See the Epics 'n Awesomes handbook for full details about how this style of RP is played!
Story Pitch:
Wizards have always been trained to advise the kings of the land. They are taught all the history, wisdom, philosophy, math, science, and war strategies throughout their training. They are trained from age 13 until they are old enough to advise the king, and they are to remain solitary, celibate, and somber all their lives. Of course, because wizards have existed as royal advisers for so long, legends have developed around their mystery. Surely you have heard of the skillful and powerful magic they perform--magic that can keep monsters at bay and make enemies turn away in fear. Legend also claimed that if a wizard ever produced a child that the child would bring monsters to plague the land until the day it no longer remained. But of course there's no such thing as magic and certainly not curses. Not really, right? It has been 10 years since the most recent wizard was selected as adviser to King Albert. Wizard Sarkkus was different compared to all the wizards of the past, and the kingdom had been attacked twice since he came to office--once by invaders from the south and another time by a horde of monsters! Traditional law gives a wizard three failures before they are expelled from office and executed. So when the third attack came just three days ago, again by monsters, King Albert was forced to perform to a formal execution. After the traditional law was read aloud before a crowd of citizens, the king asked if Sarkkus had any last words. "Yes I do. I suppose it would be important to inform you all that I have a child." Gasps and cries of horror echoed throughout the crowd. Seeing the resulting chaos he caused, the wizard laughed aloud, beginning to levitate into the air, and, with a flash of fire, disappeared from before all of them. Just then, the roars and howls of ravenous monsters were heard from the east. And to make matters worse, the courthouse was on fire... If we get the required number of players, I'll update with a link to the RP! EnA is a pretty free playstyle (anyone of any skill level can play) with a few important rules, so be sure you know how to play once we start the RP. :)

So we'll be playing as residents of this kingdom who basically have to deal with all of the crap the last wizard brought on us? And probably hunt down his child and, what, lynch them? Sounds fun.

But maybe his child is going to be one of the characters! *dramatic music starts* And even they don't know! *music intensifies*

And that's the fun of it! But yeah, you can pretty much be whoever you want, though I'll probably try to push your characters to go investigate this wizard business and see if you can solve his inevitable wizard puzzles to save the kingdom!

But no wizard characters? What about races? And what's the tech level?

According to the EnA handbook, you can be literally anything, as long as you're sentient and have a way to get around (that's not written, but it's implied if you want to actually do anything in a game...). So shatter expectations! Be a wizard who's hidden his magic for the sake of not wanting to stir up trouble. Be an elf. Hell, be a North Pole elf, it doesn't really matter. The only thing you can't be are the pre-specified NPCs (like Sarkkus or the king in this story). I'm not sure what you mean by tech level, though. Can you explain real quick for me?

Basically what has been invented so far? Is it medieval with horse carts, bows and no medical care? Or Renaissance? Or even futuristic?

Oh, ok, right! Sorry about that! It's basic medieval low fantasy, so horses and carts, bows and crossbows, no gunpowder (for widespread use at least), and monsters. The educated people in this kingdom don't believe that magic exists, but the commoners do, hence the wizard adviser to the king. Magic may or may not actually exist, though. That'll come out in the game. Beyond a basic setup, EnA allows for group world building, so if you attempt an action get a good roll, you can invent the world along with the EM and other players. It's all about improvising, really.

Lemme run this character idea by you: Comes form an order of knights who do in fact use guns. Every member of the order learns to build their own gun, and each family has their own secret techniques and technologies regarding gun creation. Their skill would be the use of their gun. The detriment would be that it would take time to reload after three shots. I guess for RP purposes, the character would have to take a turn and roll to reload. If they fail, they'll have to take another turn and it would keep going until they succeed. Or maybe the roll on the first turn just determines how many turns it takes to reload. You said gunpowder wasn't widespread, so that's why I wanna run this idea past you, to make sure such a character is okay.

Yeah, I think that would be fine! I think instead of 3 shots, it should be like a musket needing to reload after each shot, since the technology is so new and probably finicky. How you described reloading sounds like a perfect flaw (rolling to reload and needing to take more turns if you fail) for that because a gun, if it hits its mark, would be pretty powerful in this world. Does that sound fair?

Sounds good, as long as it's tuned so that however many shots it does have is proportionate to how long it takes to reload. I was originally going to have it take a certain number of turns no matter what(unless you roll a twelve) but if it's just one shot, I'll have it be a pass fail, something like half the time it succeeds, half the time it fails. And a 12 means it succeeds and can fire again that same turn. A two and I accidentally make a spark while reloading and blow the gun up?

2: Gun blows up. No more gun, and serious injury to character. 3: Fail 4: Fail 5: Fail 6: Fail 7: Fail 8: Succeed 9: Succeed 10: Succeed 11: Succeed 12: Succeed and can fire again immediately. A little less than fifty fifty(skewed in favor of failure) and extreme results on either end.

That sounds like it works to me. Whatever you think is most fair for you! And don't forget the possibility of rolling your Power Number! :) Just remember that you'll also need to roll for your action's success, so after you fire, you'll need to follow the regular roll scale for whether or not you hit the enemy or actually do whatever you were trying to do.

Of course, that's just a roll scale specifically for the reload action that's a part of the character.

Character Name: Alphonse Chevalier. Gender: Male Age: 19 Character Skill(s): Fire gun. Fatal Flaw(s): Gun must be reloaded after firing before it can fire again.
Biography: The Order of the Black Powder is a relatively new collection of knights, loyal to the king, who have taken and keep secret the knowledge of building guns. For real. You might want to post an additional thread in the General Interest Check section. And maybe bump it up to casual? I think using a system might turn the usual Free crowd off a bit.

Yeah, that's a good point. I'll probably do that soonish and see if I can get any response. I did set up another interest check in the Advanced section if you're interested, though. It's a sci-fi instead of fantasy. Maybe that'll garner some interest...
