I would say the moody character would be the most one up there. And I mean like edgy for the sake of being edgy.

And Over Powered characters. Gotta seem them every time I make a roleplay, well most of the time. While I personally like to make strong end characters it's always at the expense of something else. Naruto rp? Skilled Ninjutsu dead in genjutsu, fire emblem? Specialize in one area and dive bomb others. There are times where I GM and make my character stronger than he should be but it's due to the fandoms tendency to lean towards lower class characters and when they all try to go for stronger characters I remove the excuse of there not being one such character to fit the role as a main fighter or whatever be it.

People trying to push stuff for their own personal taste when it does not belong in the roleplay or the scenario. Aka mixing two breeds of things together just to get one feature that is completely pointless while ignoring the other details that go alongside it. Especially jarring when it happens to be a scenario where such scenarios happen to similar breeds and they are either hunted or socially unaccepted due to it.

Zombies and normal people with perfect katanas. Shy people who can kill in one hit.

Conversely, I've seen far too many characters who either witnessed, did, or suffered through something that many of us would consider horrible, and it has absolutely no effect on them until they aren't the center of attention.

Tragedies don't have to be a character's central focus (and probably shouldn't be the only thing about a character), but, if they left no impact, then they're just another card to play when the game of misery poker begins.

"Shy" characters that have no problem interacting with others.
"Rude" characters that are surprisingly polite in the "right" situation.
Lots of white characters, even in a setting that should be diverse.
On that note, a lot of straight characters (which is fine by itself but the instant romantic chemistry it leads to is way overdone).
OP characters.
"Asshole with a heart of gold" (but guilty as well).

I'm curious as to what y'all would like to see in a RP, though. Also curious if anyone here has taken measures in response to these things you see a lot of. For example, I see a lot of OP characters, so most of my characters are relatively weak in their settings haha. Make a lot of queer characters, too, so I don't have to deal with the romance.

Well, truth be told, I do currently have a character capable of wiping out all life in the universe but no one in character knows that and only two other people out of character know that besides me.

Still, I do favour the funny and unusual characters in an RP. We don't get enough non-serious people in straight RPs sometimes

@Kidd

What I'd like to see in a roleplay is simple. Characters who are diverse and all have differing ideals. They should also be balanced and not be stocked in one general area. Even if it is boring to play the archer or whatever be it they still are vital members of the team. A mage may have trouble pinning something in place without completely destroying it for example. Likewise I would like to have no 'brooders'. Having a cast of energetic people isn't ideal either though. What I want to see is a couple of energetic characters, the grizzled veteran who knows their shit, a quiet character whom isn't shy but doesn't talk much someone who offers good insight only when he needs to but not because he's edgy simply because he isn't comfortable in a social environment.

I very much agree with that, @vancexentan.

And I feel it, @RoflsMazoy. Powerful, OP characters aren't always bad. It's just that a lot of people don't seem to know how to play them properly, I guess.

I've seen lots of magical adolescents, ninjas, demons, wolves, not-so-normal "everyday" lives, and topics I swear I've read ten or so times before.

Corrected.

Humor aside, I can admit that I note certain underlying, recurring tones in roleplay as a whole. Those listed are just a few; not to say that they are necessarily a negative thing, they're just very common.

This hasn't happened on this website as far as I'm aware; this was long before I joined the site. The one thing I saw too much of at that time were characters who somehow managed to change all of their emotions on a whim. This character was supposed to be kind? Nope, now a jerk despite nothing happening. Not even a mention of a thought in the text. I can understand if said character were to have a condition of sorts that makes them emotionally unstable, and maybe that's what these people were going for. Yet it always came across as poorly done and needless.

Here I don't see that many poorly thought out characters as I did before. Then again, I've only joined a few role-plays on the site. I could be in for a shocker one day. Likely won't say too much about it though. Don't want to be too confrontational.

I apologize if you took my edit as malicious. In fact, I was just using your example as a template for mine in order to make a joke about the fact that there are always certain genres of roleplay - as well as topics - that are ever present.

I always see people scoff at and/or act dismissive of characters that are a "threat" to them.

Because everyone's gotta be a badass!
