431 BCE

An NRP of the 'Peloponnesian War'

I'll make this short and sweet - this is an NRP based around the poleis or city-states of Ancient Greece, starting with the siege of Potidaea and ending when it ends; of course, we shall be using the technology and so forth of the period, I would like to clear up a few points though...

1. I do not expect everyone/anyone to have a PhD in Classical History, if you're unsure of something then just ask! I don't expect every single detail of the period to be described, or anyone to use Ancient Greek terms/language - if you wish to, that's up to you.

2. This thread is for claims, claims on which city-state you'd like to represent IC. Each city-state was different, by dialect, by origin, by deity honoured above others, and much more, so although everyone is human and there's no fantasy elements in this RP, no one city-state is exactly alike.

3. If you're gonna be Sparta (head of the Peloponnesian League), Athens (head of the Delian League) or Thebes (head of the Boiotian League), then please have a good grasp of the city-state and all surrounding it.

4. I will be allowing 'fringe factions' I.E. Odrysian Thrace, Macedonia, Illyria and so on. Claim them if you wish!

5. Battles will be conducted in a way that I'll explain when/if this NRP takes off from a mere interest thread.

6. Try not to look on this as a chore, I'd like this NRP to be fun while still retaining a historical flavour, just not at the expense of making it seem like a dry historical lecture.

7. That's all for now, please see below, and feel free to put in claims for a nation/tribe/or city-state - the Persian Empire is mine, however, so not that. ;)

If you have any questions, please do ask!

Unfortunately I think that a lot of people lack historical knowledge of this area and will not be very interested. But perhaps I will be proven wrong. I'm interested though, and i'd like to claim Sparta or Athens if possible. Though I should probably wait for the OOC to be put up before I start making claims

You know, Sven, I completely agree with you! Thought I'd give it a try though and, if it all goes to crap, I've got other ideas...ones closer to the modern day that people might know of.

That being said, people, wikipedia is your friend...

@Jbcool I've been actually debating about whether or not to start up a Nation roleplay starting in 395 A.D or in 400 A.D that being shortly after the Roman Empire was split up for the final time. Players could take on the tribes invading the West or the larger Empires. Though each comes with its own difficulties.

That being said, if this doesn't work out we could maybe collaborate on that?

@Sven the Silent Sure thing, I've been trying to start up a Late Roman Empire RP for some time, never tried an NRP in that time period though.

I will keep one eye on this. I'm rather rusty on my ancient history, and in any case would probably be far from completely accurate... but I'll consider it more over this weekend :)

@Jbcool For quick and easy access to the situation and the tribes i'd recommend looking at the game Total War - Atilla. Not to accurate but the location of tribes and what not is. And the map work gives an easy thing to go with when setting up a world map for a roleplay as such.

@Sven the Silent I'm well versed in pre-medieval history, but thanks for the suggestions. :)

@ArenaSnow As you wish! Contrary to popular belief, I don't expect people to be completely accurate.

Ya know, I was actually thinking on that same topic going back to Rome 1 and 2 for some background/inspiration for names and the like if I did do this...

@ArenaSnow I'd recommend the Hegemonia City-States mod for Rome I or, failing that, the Wrath of Sparta DLC for Rome II; both in the time period, and both give a good idea of 'troop choice' etc.

Oh, and read this: history.com/topics/ancient-history/pel..

Gives a pretty good overall, and non-academic, overview of the whole shebang.

So, so far we've got claims on either Sparta/Athens aaaand barbaric Thrake...good, good.

Ah, Krete...a very good choice! You have it.

Just know that, at this point, Krete is fractured, so you'll need to pacify your own island first. :)

True, it'll probably be the least stable state of the bunch. It isn't even noteworthy and historically united until the league is founded around a century later...
