Well, I think I'll get working on a CS. I'm thinking about busting a chaotic Neutral character. Haven't done one in a LONG time.

Actually before I do, is there a type of magic that can weaken or suppress powers, or provide resistance? I saw you said there was fortification, an that is kind of up my alley.

You can counterspell Magics using Law, as well as the School of Magic you are countering. For example, you can cancel out a Death spell with Death + Law.

And Fate Magic can be fortified against by using clothes made from Fatesilk (a material made with Fate+Law that grants improved luck and protection from other Fate Magic).

I see, so basically to build resistance against all magic, one must be able to know all magic, and that's impossible. Darn, I was hoping to make a character who had the ability to tank magic, forcing enemies to rely on other combat methods.

There are Suppression Collars and Suppression Rings that are made with all Nine Schools, and can stop a person from using magic, but those aren't what you're looking for. Not merely that, but there's a Magical Material, Orichalcum, which has the same function as a Bolt of Law/Prime; basically, it's able to go through magical shields (but not matter) and damage even high-level Magi. Too bad only the Agency knows about it, and has equipped its Nonmagi members (and Magi who don't have Law) with it.

Alright, that's out of the option. I'll get working on my CS.

How many magic schools can the character be trained in?
What exactly does fate do?

I thought I smelled Mage: The Ascension to start with, but your mention of Prime has driven that suspicion home. All the better for it, though, I say.

Would a spirit familiar be possible? I was considering having my character be intimately bound to a spirit, which then channels his magic.

Yep, it's basically Mage:the Ascension, only I haven't read the original books, just the White Wolf Wiki and Tv.Tropes. Also, there's no Paradox, Reality is not relativistic, and you can spam Vulgar Magic if you want to.

And, okay.

Oh, and Magic can be learned by the common folk; there's no Sleepers.

So Energy magic huh? Do we get ALL the magic in one school or do we just get a select few of those? For example, energy also encompasses heat, gravity, magnetism etc if I read it correctly, so if I choose Energy do I get all of those including light?

I'm interested in Mentalist mage, but would like to know the limits of the mind control aspect. Are we talking full on do-my-bidding type influence or or something more akin to being able to persuade someone very easily?
Also, how intricate can the illusions be?

Argh, if only there was a way to prove technology's power over magic in this...
I can't apply the "outsmart bullet" ideas here, can I?

It depends on the strength of the user vis-a-vis the subject. It's possible to try 'full on do-my-bidding type', but it only works on the weak-willed. Mind Control can be detected by the subject and resisted, and Anti-Mind Control devices of varying effectiveness are common in stores. However, a really powerful and subtle Mentalist can circumvent all of this.

Illusions can cover all five senses, but most Mentalists are only able to do sight.

What are those?

Also, you're in luck; Pure Technology cloaking devices cannot be detected by magic.
