One Question...what is DotHack?

The original 'I'm-trapped-in-an-MMO' franchise.

Ohhhhhh....really? Did it have those GUI thingies?

I want to say yes, but the last one I saw was 3 years ago, and I'm pretty sure there are dotHack games I have for my PS2. I may be mixing them up.

.hack didn't really have a GUI system, although .hack//G.U did. I can't find the menu interface, but during fights you are able to see part member's HP and SP and the opposing enemy's. Skills and abilities are done through what's called a Skill Trigger-- Time stops when you choose what ability you want to use and which target it was directed to. This was only possible for the Squad leader, the others seem to go through a 'casting' time before launching themselves to do the ability.

The main menu is like a slot, you choose what options there is and you manage your equipment and items there. Dungeons are taken through chaos gates and you can go to uniquely designated dungeons using three phrases. For example, "Courageous" "Engaging" "Daydream". There are also several hidden maps in the game and they usually begin with "Hidden" and "Forbidden" respectfully.

We say that dothack was the original idea of being trapped in an MMO because in the game (and presumably in Roots and other serieses as well) the players are trapped inside the game by some means due to a data anomaly known as AIDA, which directly translates to Artificial Intelligent Data Anomaly that attacks players and sends them into a coma, becoming a "Lost One". There are more complex mechanics but, I'll spare you the details and yeah. That's dothack, the game and anime that didn't receive the hype that it deserved.
