No, even in human form he can let things go through him. Only in dark places (and the store ain't one) he can become shadow form, which makes him able to shapeshift. Besides, he still needs to discover his shadow form.

Like I mentioned, the bullets went through him. Maybe you misread it, but he can always us his power to let things go through him.

EDIT: not through him like it pierced right through his body, it was like it never actually touched him.

Not sure how he would figure it out that it was going on from where he is, but I can probably think of something. Give me a few minutes to finish up this paper and I'll try to figure it out.
