Since the old thread died out almost a year ago, I figured I'd rekindle that flame. I'll open with a picture of me with my pride and joy. A Saiga AK-74.

Fun fact: Almost all of the AK-47's you see in Hollywood aren't Russian; they're Egyptian or Chinese. Russia does have a massive fucking stock pile of their best gun-waifus tho, world's largest I think.

Fun facts, burst mode fucking blows. Tried it at the range with an M4 (none of this newfangled M4A1 shit) for shits and giggles and ended up almost having target practice with the ceiling. Okay, so that's an exaggeration but still, only use burst or automatic fire for target suppression and never to actually kill a fucker. I was disappointed.

I've also almost melted the barrel of an M240 because my bursts were too long, in a related but unrelated fact.

@TheEvanCat True. Automatic fire is basically useless for anything other than suppression or extremely close quarters, but at least it has it's niche. Burst fire is just garbage. On top of being a mechanical nightmare, it can sometimes be a gamble. You don't simply pull the trigger and get a three round burst; you have to hold it, and since it operates on a sort of ratchet system, it doesn't reset after you release the trigger, so you could let off only two rounds in a burst, then try to let off another burst and only get one round when you're expecting more. That could screw you over in a firefight. That's not even going into how that makes an already sensitive machine with tight tolerances and makes it even more susceptible to malfunction due to needless added complexity.

So yeah, burst fire is complete garbage in every way. It's a novel concept, but in practice it is only slightly less useful than muzzle-loaded rifles. Automatic fire isn't as bad if it's sustained, and fired from a proper machine gun as opposed to an assault rifle.

@ClocktowerEchos To add to that, most "AK-47s" shown in movies are really closer to the AKM. The actual AK-47 is an outdated design that was replaced by the AKM (the M stands for modernized) in 1956, which was later replaced by the AK-74, and then the AK-74m. Not sure if you've noticed, but I really love AKs.
