I'd say, since humanity as a whole is pretty diverse, that we should just do different human societies instead of humanity as a whole.

Do we really need a history of humans?

If this is written poorly (and accepted) it will affect many other players directly, can you bear such a task properly? Like 'Humans can only do XXX.' and screw every other thing in the process.

Well, it's humans, so I imagine it'd be the least contested issue- they're boring as fuck in the realms of this kind of fantasy.
I don't imagine why limitations would affect anyone- the OP has at least implied things like magic exist, so I'd use common sense to leave that in to whatever degree. It's also why I put down the notice, in case anyone wanted to contribute or let me know something they wanted in a character (so go ahead if you want).

Well, since this IS a fantasy world, I was hoping to sum up original human migration and emergence, then focus on a specific group (e.g. where my character came from). Then everyone else could add to other groups if they wished, etc. etc.

It's not the least contested if 5/6 (pending or posted) of the player characters are currently Human or hybrids of Humans (yet have quite clearly varying degrees of distinction), like I agree with pathfinder - it would be much more considerate to the other players and conducive to world building if it was just the history of a single clan instead of the whole fucking race.

I can really already see alot of clashing happening if you decided to just throw any care for others right out the window and decide to alter the ancestry of more than 80% of the characters.

Sure the host said world building was a first come first served kind of deal, but it also said that our characters are our own and cannot be changed by others. While not directly changing, you could very potentially be building walls around the progression of others - especially since it affects such a majority. If it were between two or so players, fine, but this isn't just one or two. Also don't know what the fuck you're going to write so we can't exactly add to ensure the integrity of our characters until we know what the contents are.

I think the important thing to know that this is collaborative world building, collaboration means not writing something that can ruin the game for everyone and setting it in stone - even more sio if the other players already voiced their disagreement. It means building tiny steps starting out with your character and branching off in a cohesive manner alongside others (or at least, that is my impression of it and what I would do), not simply jabbing your ideas at the origin of a whole damn race that makes up more than 80% of the playerbase.

That's why starting with a clan would be better, then maybe progress towards the origin of the whole race together with ample time and some discussion with the rest of us? Rather than trying to dictate the whole thing by yourself from the start.

(Btw I know I can be blunt but I think it's better to take preventive measures early than to allow something that everyone might regret, to progress. Hey, I'm not the host, you don't have to listen to me, but I'm no stranger to collaborative world building and from the way you put it - this just isn't collaboration at all.)

@71452K
To be fair, I'm pretty sure they were just talking about "humanity, as we know it today, can trace its origins to [placeholder homeland], rather than We are all self replicating magical constructs. Which I think is far more reasonable.

I'm using that idea to showcase the concept of how it can go wrong, the context is not important. To be fair, was it not clear to you? Hmm. @Pathfinder

Good point, though I am leaving major groups alone (like different races, etc.)

Well, the thing is, that's why I wanted people to check with me so I would add anything they might want. I can already look through characters for information to "keep safe", like ensuring religion exists so paladins can be a viable thing and so on.

Still, I'll try and make this as clean as possible, so to speak. Besides, I have school trying to beat me to a pulp, so I've little time to surprise attack you guys with a loredump.

I'm not sure anyone who uses an RP site regularly goes to parties.

General:

If you've been accepted, please post your character in the characters tab.

So far, our party composition is:
Br3ead: -Human paladin/healer
dragonmancer -Dragonblooded human Warlock
Pathfinder -Ratman Fighter
Copperpen -Human Crossbow Ranger
71452K - Human Adventurer (alchemist? rogue? NPC?)

From the Life of Raidne:

I think school is finally settling into routine. Like I said, I plan on posting four times a week; that should be actually feasible now.

Also, I'll update the zeroth post with what we've got so far.

Specifics:

First, @71452K, @Copperpen and @Pathfinder, you've all raised an important issue: how do we worldbuild without stepping all up in each others' business? I think this is worth discussing, but here's my suggestion (and preference): post more, shorter bits of worldbuilding rather than fewer, longer things. That way people have an opportunity to add to what you've written without feeling like one person is dictating the entire story. Sure, it'll be less well-polished, but we've got ~6 other people to help polish it. My other thought, which you've already noted, is to pay attention to our fellow RP'ers characters and respect them.

Secondly, keep in mind that literally nothing but your characters is 100% written in stone. Even though we (myself included) all have ideas on what we want the histories of certain races and empires to be, at some point they will be defined, and that will destroy some of our head-canon assumptions. Easy, simple case: I was picturing this RP as dragonless - I think they're overdone and often overpowered - but now dragons are definitely canon. Don't focus on what we lose, focus on what we can build on top of the thing our comrades have posted. Make everybody else's thing as awesome as you can. Just as the real universe has an infinite amount of detail and entirely new things to explore, so does this one. Going back to my dragonless concept, now we have an interesting hook for dragons as somehow conduits for magic, which raises interesting possibilities in my head for fun questlines for you guys.

The scariest part of this whole exercise is trusting each other with our creations. I truly, deeply, believe in our ability to care about each other's things enough to respect them and then make them even more fun, interesting, dark, awesome, or frighteningly normal. But, we're not going to get there if we don't take leaps of faith (especially at the beginning when we don't really know each other).

TL;DR - please take the human history out of PM's; I'd rather we develop them here.

Characters:

@Br3ad Accepted! I'm pleased that this is your first thread! Welcome to the Guild!
@dragonmancer Comparing James to the other characters, he does seem more powerful to me. What were your thoughts on toning him down? Conditionally accepted.
@Pathfinder Accepted! Have you, by chance, read anything from the Jenkinsverse? ratmen remind me of Gaoians.
@bleedingwords Yep, there's room. Go ahead and post your character sheet. I'll close the thread to applications after this, though.
@Copperpen Accepted!
@71452K Accepted as well, like I indicated in the PM.

@Queen Raidne

Generally I included Cool-downs to ensure that spells, especially the stronger ones, couldn't really be spammed and reserved to threats that deserve that kind of attention.
Well ideally if his current loadout is a step above the rest we can just cut out several spells and reserve some of them for upgrades. For instance we could cut out Calamity Cannon entirely and maybe give him some other kind of long range spell in the future, take out the lesser dragon summoning and save it as a future upgrade; and continue taking out spells you feel are too strong for the start of this roleplay.

I did notice the cool-downs; those were a good idea. I think taking out Calamity Cannon should (probably?) do it. If he's still too strong in-game, well, there's character advancement to take care of that. I don't want to take away both of the squishy spellcaster's fancy DPS abilities.

Speaking of things, we still have the party questions to fill out:

  • Who is the best cook?
  • Who owes someone else a favor, and what is it?
  • How did you meet?
  • What is the best purchase your party ever made?
  • Who is the messiest person?
  • Who is the most dependable?
  • Who should never, ever keep watch again, and why?
  • What's the most illegal thing you've done?

Apparently not? I've been checking every day, but nothing's been happening. I'm willing to run a reboot, this time without a sudden 4-day absence at the start.
