“Bye!” Kaila called out to her friends as she waved at them. Climbing into her car she heard shouts of ‘congratulations on your own room’ and ‘have fun designing it!’. Now with only 5 children left in the house and her being the eldest, the 17 year old high school student was allowed to have her own room. She didn’t mind sharing with her little sister but when Maddie left for college, the short haired brunette found herself jumping at the chance to have her own space.

Her headphones around her neck blared music as her head bounced along to the beat. Today was a good day! Her mother said she could design the room in however she felt fit her! On her way home to the country house, the brunette passed an old house that was having an estate sale. “Huh!” She said in excitement as she pulled the car to the side of the road and climbed out.

“Hello Kaila,” An older woman said as she saw the little girl get out of her car. “How are you?” The two engaged in a friendly conversation with a touch of sadness because the woman, a friend of her mother’s, had lost her mom and wanted to sell some of the assists.

“I actually just inherited Maddie’s old room so I’m looking for things to make the room more, mine.” She said with a smile as the older woman gave her a gentle grin.

“Let me know if you find anything. I know the excitement you’re feeling about finally getting your own bedroom. Hopefully you can find something to help make the room yours.” The older woman said with a nod and a smile.

Kaila began to look through the belongings for sale. A few old records, a couple nice tables and chairs; a beautiful vanity stand that really looked like something she could see in her room. That was until she came to a full length mirror standing six feet tall. The boarders of the mirror were a stunning oak with a charming looking carving along the rim. “Oooo.” She said, excitement filling her voice her as reached out and ran her hand along the wood. “How much for this?!” She called out the older woman. Within minutes she had the new mirror loaded into the back of her car and was driving back home.

With the help of her siblings, she got the mirror into her room and cleaned it with wood polish and wind cleaner. “Phew!” She said allowed as she wiped her brow and flopped down on the floor in front of the mirror. She had changed into a pair of blue jeans and a green t-shirt to clean the room and fix up the mirror. Smiling she admired the craftsmanship of the wood. “I wonder how old you are…” She muttered softly. What a beautiful mirror, if only it could talk.

Finally the day had come. For months Gathran's master had announced to go away on some kind of errand he had not even bothered to tell his apprentice about. Thinking quite frankly, Gathran more and more had come to the conclusion that the old man wasn't putting full trust into him. An abscence that should not last for more than a few days really couldn't be something so important, could it ? So why had his master refused to tell him if it wasn't for a rather strong belief in his inability ?

However and in spite of the ubiquitous presence of magic, people actually blessed with the ability to control it were seldomly born. It maybe was the primary reason for Gathran's firm hopes that his apprenticeship would actually come to a successful conclusion and not something else after all. His master was someone he considered rude and beyond being somewhat strict, but he probably couldn't afford to lose anybody who still could become a worthy successor.

And of course him being away was a near perfect opportunity to try things Gathran wouldn't have dared to do otherwise...

It had become late evening, the sun was hovering low above the horizon and the lower parts of the mage's tower were already cut off from any direct light and merely illumated by that portion that had been scattered. Not surprising, given that the thing was standing in the middle of a dense forest with no village to come for at least two miles. Gathran didn't know if the pond next to it had been there forever or was an artificial creation, but it didn't matter to him anyway. There was a spell to be cast, an -- at least for him -- rather complicated procedure that would last for the next couple of hours.

It was his silent hope that the ingredients dumped into the water would not have any lasting effect. After all Gathran didn't plan on a returning master quickly discovering what his apprentice had done and how he had, let's say 'diverted', some of the supplies given to him for practicing. The immensely broad-shouldered man dared to use his wooden staff for stiring. Why wouldn't the water's damn surface turn ? Could it really be that complicated to create a large mirror ? Those in the tower were all rather small and some of them even of dubious quality if not simply degraded by years of decay. Gathran just wanted something that was even bigger than he himself was, but so far success had eluded him.

Or had it ? In fact something was happening, but it wasn't visible at first and then quite the opposite of the intended. Instead of reflecting light, the water was starting to become even more susceptible for it. Not only the water was transparent, but also those parts of the dimensional barriers in the volume occupied by it. The pond had turned pitch black and left Gathran to believe that he had simply messed up and polluted it, but in fact it was light going ways it wasn't supposed to go and ending up at places he wasn't supposed to know about.

Kaila cleaned the mirror with a sense of pride. She bought this with her own money and it was beautiful!! Grinning from ear to ear she finished cleaning and left to put away the cleaning marital. During her time away the mirror rippled and flashed, showing an upward angle of a twilight sky and a large humanoid-creature standing above it looking downwards.

By the time the short haired girl returned to her room, the mirror had returned to normal. Humming to herself she folded her laundry and put it away before going back to the mirror. Checking her reflection she gave herself a little nod before turning to face her bed, that was until she tripped… over nothing. Yes that’s right, the poor girl tripped over nothing and fell towards her mirror. Well a quick re-clean never hurt. Until she watched her hand disappear into the glass like she had dipped her hand into water. “What the…” Before she could finish her sentence or shout for help, her entire body fell into the liquid mirror.

The world around her shifted, she felt like she floating in water but, she could breathe. Around her was glimmering obs of light which danced away from her when she reached out to touch them. She was so in aw that she forgot she was in danger, that was until she noticed she was falling towards a black pit of an exit. Panic filled her as she attempted to move away from the pit but she was launched through it with a large amount of force.

The black liquid felt like water and covered her entire body before she was thrown from the water and sent flying through the air. Her scream echoed throughout the forest and all she saw was she was going to impact someone and… sure enough she did.

Splat. The young girl landed on him with a thud before rolling off of him and staring upwards. Her body hurt, her head was spinning and she was staring up at the sky. “What… happened…?”

If he had not been Gathran, the mage's apprentice probably would have been pushed backwards towards and into the small elevation that separated the loosely paved walkway around the pond from the plants that made up the rest of the little garden. His enormity saved him from having to endure this fate and Gathran was able to stabilize in time. Things were a bit different for whom could only be considered a very unexpected newcomer. He had barely enough time to realize that he appeared to be a she in fact and a quite human one before her impact onto his torso. Bulked up arms were able to intercept her from below before her hitting the hard ground, but didn't manage to nullify her momentum in time completely.

The female in front of him asked one thing, however Gathran's mind was so filled with others that not even his lips did separate in preparation for an answer. Quite frankly spoken he didn't knew it anway -- he'd just be very glad if he did. Something must have really gone totally wrong and in a way that had been unimaginable for him before. Of course he had no idea about any details and was reduced to a phenomenological point of view in his considerations.

It was only a very noticeable number of seconds later that the man standing in front of her came out of his astonishment. His eyes were widened and stared at her face straightforwardly. "I... I don't know..." was all he was able to mutter at this point, instinctively stepping away from her by a yard or so. One could see that Gathran was shrinking internally to almost nothing -- and that's not only in comparison to his quite huge outside appearance. He was so screwed up. How could he even try to fix this in time before his master's return ? And what if... there wasn't any fix ?

"Who... who are you ? And... where do you come from ?" He wasn't really expecting a useful answer, but maybe he was wrong and there was a chance that she was a mage. A better mage than he was.

Why… why did this person look as stunned as she was? And ask her attention climbed upwards she realized she was encountering someone who was close to double her size and width. Oh… god! She jumped back from him as he did from her, both of them seeing to keep their distance in a state of shock.

The further they got from each other the more she realized he looked very… VERY different from herself. And hey, Kaila was very open-minded and welcomed many different types of people in her life but… but… what the fuck!? He was blue, BLUE! With tattoos and almost no eyes and… and… her hands went to her hair as she gripped the brunette locks in her fingers. Holy shit, there was a blue cosplayer standing in front of her who looked like the Nightcrawler from X-Men and Ronan from Guardians of the Galaxy had a baby! Her brown eyes filled with panic as she looked around her, she was in the middle of the forest… soaking wet. These woods didn’t look familiar to her and she had no other answer for being wet from head to toe.

Her gaze moved from the surrounding woods back to him as he asked who she was and where she came from. Even he didn’t seem to know what was going on. Oh god, was this a cult gathering!? No… no cults don’t dress like cosplayers, her whole body was shaking as she attempted to process what happened.

“My… my name…” She said as she tightened the grip on her hair. “is Kaila, Kaila Paton… I… I was putting away my folded clothes and stumbled… I… I fell into my new – uh, old mirror, and it… it turned… into… gel and sucked me in. The… the next thing I know I… I…” Unable to keep herself together she dropped down to her knees and brought her head down, “Where am I?! How did I get into a forest? Where is the nearest town?!” Tears ran down her face as she spoke in a soft voice. “I’m so scared… and cold…”
