Summer of 1799

11th of April

To further strengthen the bond between their two nations, Prince Pashkov Sadoski, brother to King Jakub Sadoski of The Kingdom of Claidor, announces his engagement to Empress Alina Romanovna, ruler of The Empire of Rubrus. This clear sign of intent from both parties only shows how strong the alliance is quickly becoming. The wedding itself is set to occur within a few months.

13th of April

The Republic of Toubres continues its colonial expansion, largely ignoring the war consuming Europe. An expedition sails south from Toubrian Rilos, careful to give a wide berth to the newly establish coastal fort of The Kingdom of Aontas. Their already established trade with the natives of the new land helps ease the establishment of the new colony, and soon the Colony of Toubrian Guerra.

14th of April

The Kingdom of Ubren honours its alliance with The Redcliff Empire and weighs in on the Sescos crisis. They pledge their support for The Kingdom of Sescos and begin mobilising their troops. They offer their full support to Redcliff, and to The Hastel Dominions in any offensive they make against the enemies of Sescos.

16th of April

The Three City's Republic of Ianian announces a new economic scheme, allowing prospective factory owners to secure loans to establish these centres of industry all across Ianian. The plan is not an immediate success, but neither is it a failure. A steady stream of entrepreneurs, and already existing business owners, take the loans, and the already industrialised nation continues down the path of industrial revolution.

19th of April

In a diplomatic statement, The Republic of Toubres directly addresses The Kingdom of Aontas. In a bid to avoid war between their colonial holdings to the west, Toubres suggests dividing the continent, and it's potential land, suggesting that Aontas stays on the north bank of the inland sea, and Toubres will stay on the south. They address the formation of the Aontas colony of Suveren, and request that the island be demilitarised, so as to prevent the building of tensions, but as a sign of goodwill, do not request that Aontas abandon the colony.

21st of April

The Empire of Rubrus announces a celebration in honour of the announcement of the royal wedding, and begin a mass training of their army. This unsurprisingly further damages relations with their neighbour, and historical rival, The Kingdom of Ilastiri. The training itself is of moderate success. Rubrus commands a sizeable detachment of Militia Divisions, who struggle with the rigours of the new training, but the professional bulk of the army take to it well, and there is evident improvement. Although what Rubrus is preparing for, is not yet clear.

24th of April

The remaining half of the invading force of The Republic of Oflua, under the command of General Yurij Zayets, continues its march towards Larymnas, the capital of The Kingdom of Sescos. Despite his aides imploring him to flee, King Bakos Mátyás refuses to abandon the city, pledging to defend it, even manning the walls himself if it comes down to it. But the capital is only defended by a meagre garrison, and there is little doubt that the Ofluans will reach the capital before relief can come from the Sescosi army to the north, or from the Province of Osnic to the south.

The Holy Territories of Edoniras (The HTE)

Deathly, desolate, silence perpetuated the Serene Palace. A minute of utter silence held in honour of every Vipionist passing as the seconds ticked by and war burned away in the east of the continent. Through the hallowed hallways and high ceiling offices all stood in utter and total stillness as they contemplated what has occurred. In the highest room of the tallest tower the Pope, Invictus XI, sat alone and wept. His body shuddering as he held his head in his hands, tears streaming between clenched fingers. It was not the momentous size of the death he was so distraught over, nor the threat to his faith, but his own personal failure. He thought himself better, assumed himself stronger and now as the continent was drawn into conflict he was left on the sidelines in an impossible position. The minute of silence, broken only by his Holiness himself, struggling with his own demonia.

A sharp rap on the door.

The Pope leapt to his feet just as the bells chimed to signal the end of the moment and people all across the largest church in the world went back to the jobs of statecraft that never stopped, even if they did. Using a small cloth to his side he dabbed at his face to wipe away the marks of his own insecurity, turning at the same time to begin reapplying the ornaments of his position back to his robes. "C-Come!" He managed, stifling the last vestiges of weakness and replacing it with icy cold steel. The door opened slowly and the lithe figure of the special adviser appeared, head bowed.

"Your Holiness, it is time to return to your council, even the Tetrarchs are here. They will need your leadership and guidance, especially in these coming days." The adviser simply left then, not waiting for any answer, aware even the envoy of God had no choice in these matters. With a final gulp of air, the Pope was resolute and the facade he lived behind restored to full strength. Like a storm he travelled from the private room and advanced down the steps towards one of the larger meeting rooms currently playing host to the highest advisers in his court and the four men all vying for his own very position. Wolves invites into the home and needing fresh blood every meal or else they'd sink their teeth into the host.

Coming to the doors themselves to the meeting room, ornately and intricate with floral and aesthetic patterns the envy of the world over. Thousands of years of history, devotion and worship; a monument to the wealth of nations and glory of mankind. All pushed aside to welcome the leader of it all to his advisers and begin the new day of business. All stood at his arrival, bowing their heads and waiting patiently as he took the central position on the dais at the head of the room. Settling himself in he looked over the small pack of notes his assistant had made and reminded himself of the orders of business to be noted as well as some of the more niche details he had to consider. Finally, a wave of the hand and resonant. "We begin." To allow all to return to their own seats and the business to begin.

"The most important matter, I believe, for you all to note is the war that was declared on the Kingdom of Sescos. I-" The Pope was interrupted as the Tetrarch for the Might of Arms stood and blustered into anger.

"Your Holiness my brethren go to war as we speak! The people of Redcliffe are good followers, why do we not march besides them!?" The tall and muscular man, a former military officer who found the cloth, Marcellus Lucio seemed to glow a bright red and there were wide eyes at the impudence and direct challenge to the Pope the man had just laid down. Met with the glacial gaze of the Pope the fire under the Tetrarch softened and the venom spat in the next words by Invictus saw the bullish man sit back down.

"Your opinion is noted, Tetrarch Marcellus, now if you could manage to staunch the flow of faeces from that gullet I might be able to finish my own point and allow you to make suggestions, if I deem it appropriate or needed." Without giving the man a chance to reply he returned immediately to his point. "I believe that an immediate declaration of war and hostility is foolish, our men are not in position and we have the summit and a festival to look at. However, this seemingly weak willed display from those outspoken critics across the continent has given us a message we cannot ignore. They will sit back and do nothing when warmongers attack their walls. They have blinked, we will not. So, Tetrarch, you can report back to your allies at home -as I am sure you will - that the Pope hears the plight of our people in the East and they should worry not. He will act in time. I would allow debate and discussion on the point, but I don't particularly want to." The Pope looked to every man, inviting one of them to dare challenge him as Marcellus had done so. None even met his gaze and he nodded, content he had squashed the chance of any internal revolt for now, but aware he had cut off a great deal of advice on the matter. With a click of his tongue he continued. "Further reports inform us that preparation for the festival proceeds well, I assume this is accurate?"

"Er, it is, your Holiness!" A very mouse-like man chirped up from behind giant spectacles. "Pilgrims have very slowly started to enter the country and already we have been encouraging innkeepers and other service providers to higher more stuff and build up stocks in preperation for the increase in traffic through the country as they come to pay homage and celebrate here. Your mass for them all is also being written, we believe a more fiery speech might be wise given the circumstances and your previous statement." Little more was needed and the pope politely replied with acknowledgement.

"Very good, next, the matter of future investment. It seems many of our neighbours funnel yet more money into the colonial ventures they are so fond of. We do not have this as a source of income and none of the trouble that comes from it." Murmurs of agreement, the choice to refrain from colonialism was a tactical one, they knew. "However, this must mean we make our nation the home of industry and wealth. It is no good for the heralds of God to be themselves too poor to aid anyone. The profiteering and mercantilism of the Ianians is proof they have no interest in the freedom of trade, so, we will challenge that. Now. My economic advisor, Roberto Hilario, has put together an initial plan and we are going to put it into motion as soon as possible. Turn to your third page and you will see it laid out before you.

A number of hours later...

"... Which is why, gentlemen, this is not to be announced until we have at least our founding members. With all three member states, we should be able to encourage others to join this and begin the process of seizing back a freedom of trade to help our nation flourish." The men, many of whom seemed a little confused but tried to hide such a fact, nodded in less than unison. One hand rose, like a child, and the Pope waved to him.

"Your Holiness, it is a bold strategy, this is surely to cause further tension. Can I assume we will be making some moves to ensure the safety of the nation?" More fervent agreement here, as war and security seemed to be a matter they understood far better. A hand raised to summon silence allowed the Pope to retort.

"We will be ensuring that the people of our nation are safe and no harm will befall them, what authority does a nation have to denounce protection of trade when they began the arms race?" A shrug of ascent from the outspoken adviser meant there was little else to say and so the Pope finally called the meeting to an end, asking Biblius Massa, Hilard Hershaw and Ferulli Gaza to stay behind. "You, all three of you, will be getting your marching orders today and I do not want to hear from you until they are completed."

As the door to the meeting room swung shut each was enraptured in the details of the movements they needed to make.

Message after message came into the office of Emperor Lothair II. Most were rather mundane things like reports, expenditures, collected tax revenues. However, one messenger suddenly ran into the room. "Your Majesty! War! War has been declared by the Republic of Oflua and the Empire of Echyan! The armies of the Republic march on the Capital of Sescos as we speak!" Lothair II offered no response and silence filled the room for several long seconds. He stood up from his chair and began to walk out of the office. His attenders and retinue hurried to follow him as he continued to walk to the barracks of the City.

His arrival spurred the once silent regiments into formation. They were in the midst of their regular patrols and duties, and the sudden appearance of the Emperor stirred the men. Within the minute, the regiments were formed up in their marching formations, saluting the emperor. With silence once more returning, Lothair finally spoke up "For ages, the Empire of Attolia has long been a peace loving country, forging friendships and forming peaceful resolutions during conflicts. We have always kept our word and never given anyone reason to doubt our promises. Merchants around the world take solace in making promises with Attolians, knowing that the promise given by an Attolian will be fulfilled. Yet, in our past, there have been those who doubted the resolve of Attolians and resorted to strong arming us. We have time after time, risen to meet our promises even when they require appropriate force.

Our words are not cheap, and they are never wasted. It is for this reason, I ask of you, the pride of the Empire. Will you uphold the promises of our people?"

"Aye!"

"Then gentlemen, here is my message to you and the world. The Empire of Attolia hereby denounces the transgressions and hostilities of the Republic of Oflua and the Empire of Echyan, and demands that the two cease all military actions and return to their borders. Failure to do so will be met with a formal declaration of war."

Cheering erupted from the men. They had long been expecting such a conflict with either the Kingdom of Ubren or the Empire of Echyan, and were ready to finally fight. Lothair II saw this as an opportunity to have better relations with the Kingdom of Ubren and de-escalate the tensions. After all, it was very possible that they would be allies in a bitter war. Regardless, relations with the Empire of Echyan were at an all time low, largely due to trading and colonial conflicts. A war with the Echyan Empire would certainly be a popular conflict. Thus, the armies of Attolia began to stir, in eager anticipation of war.

Summer of 1799

25th of April

The Redcliff Empire makes their move. Mobilising their army already gathered in the Province of Ventir, they march east, and cross the border into The Echyan Empire. The army, numbering a staggering more than forty five thousand of Redcliff's finest soldiers. At their head, is a man that many consider to be one of the greatest generals alive, General Melezio Parenti, renowned for his ingenious offensive strategies. The army marches south, making for the coastal city of Kolceg with all speed.

27th of April

Whether inspired by the actions of their allies, or determined to fight back against their invaders, The Kingdom of Sescos announces conscription across the nation. This is met with resounding success, as thousands of men answer the call, desperate to defend their homeland. The effort almost cripples the nation's economy, but it is judged a more than necessary evil.

30th of April

The Empire of Attolia announces the creation of what it has dubbed The Merchant Marines. The frigates of the Attolian neighbours are quickly prepared, and begin patrolling the waters surrounding Attolia and her colonies. It indisputably reduces the threat of privateers and pirates, but the largest impact it has is increasing the sense of security across Attolia's holdings. With the news of colonial uprisings already spreading across the globe, seeing the active efforts of Attolia to protect her people helps settle nerves.

1st of May

The army of The Redcliff Empire reaches the outskirts of the Echyan Empire city of Kolceg. Unsurprisingly, the city garrison is dwarfed by the size of the invading army, but in the harbour of the city, a considerable fleet of the Echyan Navy is docked. Even as the Redcliff army begins it's siege of the city, the guns of the Echyan ships open fire, and begin an unrelenting bombardment of the Redcliff army. Unable to properly combat the fleet, General Melezio Parenti instead focuses on shattering the city garrison. The guns of the artillery quickly breach the city walls, and the Redcliff soldiers butcher the garrison of the city that remain, the majority managing to flee to the relative safety of the Echyan fleet. With the city seized, the fleet withdraw, leaving Melezio to await his next orders.

3rd of May

In the Province of Ella, The Holy Territories of Edoniras forms 'The Holy Light', an army numbering more than twenty thousand and led by one of the Holy Territories leading generals. The intent for this new force is yet to be made clear, but there are some who are suspiciously watching the Pope. Despite this, the vast majority are too distracted with the religious festival occurring across Edoniras to notice.

Summer of 1799

4th of May

Continuing their economic reforms, The Three City's Republic of Ianian announces that it will be reducing it's tax rates for the entire population. This is unsurprisingly met with a huge surge in national satisfaction, and celebrations erupt across the Three City's.

7th of May

As pilgrims continue to flock from all across Europe, The Holy Territories of Edoniras begins issuing subsidies to the local governments, to aid in accommodating the masses attending the religious festival. These subsidies are greatly appreciated, not just by the worshippers themselves, but also by the population of Edoniras, who were faced with the daunting logistical task of hosting the festival. With this new influx of funds, the revelry and festivities continue in full voice.

10th of May

General Yurij Zayets Republic of Oflua army besieges The Kingdom of Sescos capital, Larymnas. The city is impressively fortified, and the recent success of conscription within Sescos, as well as the rallying presence of King Bakos Mátyás, means that it will not be an easy siege. It quickly becomes clear that it will become a matter of time. Will Larymnas hold until relief arrives, or will Sescos and her allies march to find the city already in ruins?

12th of May

Following the creation of it's 'Merchant Marines', The Empire of Attolia calls for other nations to join it in this initiative, attempting to encourage the creation of a web of international allies, aiding each other in the far corners of the world. How the other nations of Europe will react to this still stands to be seen.

15th of May

The Eman of The Eternal Hadeen of Dashkatar announces that it will actively act in the defence of the rebel groups in The Redcliff Empire colonies. It condemns Redcliff's 'brutal' treatment of the Hijeens, and swears that it will "crush the Redcliff Navy" if they attempt to land troops to reinforce their control over the colonies.

18th of May

The Akkadian Empire begins raising more troops, spurred on by the escalating conflict in Europe. The recruitment drive meets with relative success. The Empire's people do not wish to be dragged into a war in Europe, preferring to keep to their own borders. However the population is loyal to Emir Tekir Ayvaz, and the army swells.

21st of May

The Three City's Republic of Ianian sends a diplomatic party to The Akkadian Empire, attempting to secure better relations between the two nations. Considering their deteriorating relations with their historical allies, The Eternal Hadeen of Dashkatar, Akkadia is surprisingly open to this new diplomatic party. The Three City's Republic is welcomed, and relations improve, the two nations considering how best further their mutual interests.

25th of May

The Echyan Empire makes a bold offensive move. The Echyan navy is the powerhouse of the nation, and it is brought to bear against The Redcliff Empire . With the entirety of the Redcliff navy docked at Travton, Redcliff find's itself almost defenceless as the Echyan navy raids along the coast. Barraging the coastal towns and cities of the Provinces of Ventir, Novus Trav and So Tren, the Echyans exact a bloody toll.

28th of May

The Kingdom of Ilastiri, finding itself still at odds with the growing alliance of The Kingdom of Claidor and The Empire of Rubrus, reach out to The Republic of Oflua, hoping to find a potential ally. The escalating conflict that the Republic finds itself in lends them a more sympathetic ear, and relations between the two nations begin to rise. Ilastiri possesses an impressive army, and the Republic quickly begins work on encouraging the Kingdom to lend their forces to the war.

The Republic of Toubres

The sudden knocking on the door echoed through the small room, and Leonardo Serra jumped slightly, taken by surprise. Turning towards the door, he called out for the knocker to enter, and visibly relaxed as the smiling face of Gaspar Abreu leaned around the door. Beckoning his old friend in, he smiled wearily.

"It's good to see you, Gaspar. Please, join me."

Gaspar took the invitation, stepping inside the sparsely decorated chamber, and closing the door behind him as he strode over to where Leonardo sat. Pulling out the spare chair, the broad-shouldered man sank down into it, sighing slightly as he shifted to get comfortable.

"And it's good to see you too, Líder do Conselho."

Leonardo waved his hand dismissively, putting down his steel nib pen as he turned to properly face Gaspar.

"You know there's no need for those formalities, Gaspar. We've known each other for years after all."

The other man smiled, his teeth flashing slightly in the flickering light cast by the room's lamp.

"I remember it well. We were young men back then, and now look at us. You stand at the head of the Republic!"

The Lidor do Conselho frowned slightly, shaking his head.

"The Conselho leads Toubres, not one man, and certainly not me. Don't let the others hear you saying things like that."

Gaspar shrugged unapologetically, the smile never fading from his face. He held his hands out, leaning back slightly in his chair.

"You might be right. But it's still you that everyone looks too, even the rest of the council. Even Luiz cares about your opinion, although that old bastard would rather die than admit it. Unfortunately, Leonardo, I'm not just here on a social call. The next Conselho meeting is tomorrow, and I thought I'd inquire as to what your thoughts are, so that I can prepare myself, so to speak..."

The smile faded from Leonardo's face, and he rose to his feet, moving to stand before the narrow window. The Palácio do Conselho stood on the banks of the River Amzor, and through the window, Leonardo could look out over the docks. Proud warships of the Toubrian Navy rocked slightly, the lamps almost looking like stars against the darkness of the night. He squared his jaw for an instant before he spoke.

"I feared as much. Truth be told, I'm not sure myself. War is consuming Europe, and it seems with every passing day another nation pledges its loyalty to one side or the other. It seems the conflict has become a wildfire, threatening to consume even the most rational and peaceful. I can't allow Toubres to be dragged into it against our will, although I'm sure some of our fellow Conselho members will do their best to try and lead us astray. For now, we must focus on the most pressing issue, the Kingdom of Aontas. I know we have long been rivals, but I'd hoped King Matthias wouldn't succumb to this warmongering natures of those further south. I hope that we can ensure we do not clash in the colonies, I truly do. The New World offers such great opportunities, and I want to ensure we are creating new paradises, not new battlefields"

30th of May

Staying true to their word, The Eternal Hadeen of Dashkatar launches an offensive against The Kingdom of Sescos. The 1st Army prepares to make the crossing across the strait, supported by a strong contingent of the Dashkatar navy. However, they quickly encounter almost the full force of the Sescosi fleet. What followed was a frantic and bloody naval battle. The Dashkatar continued their objective of making landfall west of the Sescosi city of Visev, but they faced fierce opposition from the Sescosi fleet. The Dashkatar fleet finds itself outnumbered, and it is only the presence of Admiral Duran Inal that gives them a glimmer of hope. The battle rages on for several hours, and by the end of the day, it becomes clear that the Dashkatar fleet has been defeated, the remaining ships forced to limp home. However they successfully managed to successfully land a sizeable contingent of the Dashkatar army, which quickly began pushing north to cut off the city of Visev.

3rd of June

The Kingdom of Aontas announces a revolutionary new plan. They propose that the natives of their Colony of Inverus become full citizens of Aontas. Citing the natives embrace of the Aontas culture, and their long shared history, The Kingdom also proposes embracing Inverus as a Province equal to those of the Aontas homeland. The idea is initially met with stunned silence, not due to any real shock, but more at the shock of the lack of any perceived protest. And so the Royal Decree carries, and Inverus becomes, for all intents and purposes, a Province of Aontas.

7th of June

A colonist group departs New Rodesia, the Colony of The Three City's Republic of Ianian and sails west. They reach the shore, and quickly begin establishing a colony. There are frictions with the natives, but the Republic's colonists persevere regardless, and soon form the Colony of New Milania. How the relations with the natives continue, remains to be seen.

8th of June

The siege of Larymnas continues, as the Kingdom of Sescos garrison continues to valiantly defend their city. They continue to have high morale, eagerly anticipating the arrival of relief, from whichever source is comes. However supplies are being worn down, and for every assault beaten back, the cost is Sescosi blood.

10th of June

In the Colonies of The Republic of Toubres, an initiation begins to raise armies to defend themselves. Surprisingly, the natives take to this recruitment well, and a handful of regiments are quickly raised, prepared to defend their homelands in the name of the Republic. Armed by Toubres, these regiments are initially met with resistance by the Republic's own armies, but the regiments already stationed in the Colonies themselves are well accustomed to the natives, and take to them well, seeing them as brothers-in-arms.

14th of June

The Redcliff Empire announces that all vessels of The Three City's Republic of Ianian, The Eternal Hadeen of Dashkatar, The Echyan Empire and The Republic of Oflua that dock into a Redcliff port will be taxed for their stay, and a higher tax placed on their goods. Considering the raiding that the Echyan Navy has been conducting along the east coast of Redcliff, this announcement becomes a laughing stock among their vessels. They take to tossing a coin into the sea after each raid, as the 'tax' for their stay.

16th of June

Following the capture of Kolceg, the vast invading army of The Redcliff Empire marches east. Rather than assaulting the remaining Empire of Echyan held city of the Province, they cross into the territories of The Kingdom of Sescos, moving at all speed to break the siege of Larymnas. News reaches the city itself, and The Republic of Oflua doubles it's efforts to seize the city.

18th of June

The rebels in the Colonies of Egalpin, Ottomas and Soute Otto launch attacks against the colonists of The Redcliff Empire. Still largely unpunished for the bloodbath of their initial uprising, they launch punishing assaults on the Redcliff people. Although the garrisons react quickly, they cannot be everywhere at once, and the rebels fade into the desert as suddenly as they appear.

19th of June

The diplomatic party The Three City's Republic of Ianian, still guests of The Akkadian Empire, proposes a trade agreement. The Akkadians welcome the suggestion, far from ignorant of the economic powerhouse that Ianian is quickly becoming. This only further enforces the growing relationship between the two nations, bridging the cultural gaps as the diplomatic party continues to enjoy the rich society of Akkadia.

21st of June

The Kingdom of Aontas accepts the diplomatic approach by The Kingdom of Vendsyssel, and the two nations enter into a defensive pact. Europe is quickly finding itself fractured into alliances and agreements, and those who are still alone, may find themselves stranded as war continues to spread.

23rd of June

The Holy Territories of Edoniras forms another army. While the first army did not stand as particularly confrontational to any one nation, the new army formed in the Province of Biania makes the Pope's intentions clear. Plans are quickly drawn up for the defence of the Province, but also, and perhaps more worryingly, plans of attack are also drawn up.

24th of June

The Governors of the Colonies of The Republic of Toubres receives orders to begin the introduction of natives as full citizens of the Republic. The plan is initially small-scale, but it is received well by the natives of the Republic's longest standing colonies, whereas it's viewed as a mere curiosity in the newer colonies. The plan grows in scale, and the Toubres colonists find their numbers bolstered by Natives, the two cultures becoming deeply ingrained.

26th of June

The Eternal Hadeen of Dashkatar sends an envoy to The Akkadian Empire, attempting to restore the diminishing relations between the two nations. However they find that the Akkadian high society is already occupied with the party from The Three City's Republic of Ianian, and although they do go someway to at least stabilise the relationship, they struggle to make any real diplomatic progress.

27th of June

In a shocking move, The Redcliff Empire openly declares the legalization of slavery for all African natives. Considering the vast majority of the natives have risen up and fled into the desert, the first initial attempts by the garrisons to go after them are met with bloody ambushes, and they quickly abandon the plan. Instead they move to enslave the few remaining loyal natives, driving those that still remain to rise up as well, moving to join their comrades in the deserts. The fairly pitiful number of slaves seized also cripples the Redcliff scheme to tempt more colonists, which is in itself offset by the continued attacks on the already present colonists.

Autumn of 1799

1st of July

The 1st Army of The Eternal Hadeen of Dashkatar continues it's march, and reaches The Empire of Sescos city, Visev. The city itself is heavily fortified, due to it's key position of controlling the Strait. The bulk of the Sescosi Navy has also returned to dock there, and they turn their cannons against the 1st Army, even as they begin to lay siege. With unrivalled naval superiority, the Sescosi are able to bring fresh supplies into the city unchallenged, and it quickly becomes clear that the siege will not be a short one.

The Holy Territories of Edoniras (The HTE)

With the final chime of the great bell the figures lined up amongst the pews slowly filed their way towards the great open doors at the entrance to the Cathedral. The sweet, angelic, faces of the statues and imagery gleamed down upon the worshippers as they went back to their earthly lives and left the sanctity and tranquillity of mass. At the head of the great room Pope Invictus XI stood tall, beaming a white toothed smile at all the people even as he adjusted some notes in front of him. They were his children, his flock, and he would guide them to safety. When the final person left, his body sagged slightly, the rigour holding him a moment ago fading as he sucked in a deep breath and the cracking facade was allowed to slip. Breathing once. Twice. Muttering a brief prayer under his breath, the most holy man alive restored his portrait of calm, collected, leadership. Adjusting the large mantle of the pontiff which sat upon him like a moral crown of infallibility, Invictus XI stepped in a collected manner towards the small alcove which obscured the wooden door that led into the more labyrinthine complex of the Serene Palace proper.

Orderlies bowed their heads, muttering their greetings in reverence, as he passed before rushing off to continue their duties. Taking a relatively unused passage and then turning into a locked room, of which he held one of the five keys, the Pope entered the Chamber of the Tetrarchs. Inside, four man of varying age - including Tetrarch Marcellus - sat in small plinths around a grandiose and arcane room designed to appear like the inside of a small shack from aeons ago. If, of course, that small shack as built of gold leaf, marble and fine lacquered woods. "Sit." The Pope commanded as each man rose in greeting, cut of before they had time to utter the same duplicitous openings they always made. Each man in that room was a wolf hungry for the title Invictus XI held.

And he would not allow them to have it.

"So, gentlemen, I have honoured this call for a meeting. I assume there is a matter you wish to discuss with me?" He asked, tone betraying a hint of the terseness he felt deep in his core. At first the men looked between each other, conferring with subtle shifts of bushy brows and odd twists of the lips. This men must be damn lizard people, the Pope thought.

"Most Holy-" Charles de Friere began. "A number of us have only arrived in the Palace recently, honouring this call for celebration you have made, and so are not quite up to speed on exactly what it is you are doing with these Holy Territories. Perhaps you can enlighten us?" The Tetrarch for the Protection of the Herd lent back, folding delicate and incredibly thin fingers in front of him like a spider weaving a web. The Pope responded in the same short manner he had first greeted the Tetrarchs.

"Charles, I am leading the territories as I deem most able. There is war afoot, economic tribulation and the state of our orders sanctity and assurances in this life as well as the next." Invictus turned his nose up slightly. "I cannot afford the comforts of the Tetrarchy anymore and instead busy myself acting and not just debating." A flush of red blossomed on the features of the Attolian.

"Your Holiness, you wound me. I was not assuming you were not doing good work, I merely wished to have the purpose and over arching illuminated to this most sacred of conclaves." Silence, was all that was returned to the Tetrarch. "Holiness, as much as we have no legislative power over you - nay, no moral authority over you either - we are not weak individuals in this faith and our cooperation would be a great benefit." The man smiled with viperous venom.

"Charles, we have worked together many years and I've seen that sharp tongue at work more often than I care to admit. I appreciated it when I convinced you to support my ascension, do not now make me cut it out for trying to use it against me. You have all busied yourself in your own colleges since these crises happened, only arriving when I had to call the entirety of our faith. I am not convinced any of you wish to help, I believe you wish to hide and then jump upon me if this crisis goes south and take the Papacy for yourself. Do I know all of you are capable? yes. Do I trust you? No." A brief pause as the Pope looked down and unlocked the case atop his own position. Inside were the notes he had had placed earlier. Lifting one sheet out and closed the case and locked it again before speaking once more. "So, men of the cloth, I offer you this. Stay, support my position and I will give you the place of close advisers as you all know the posts are meant to grant you. Or, do your duty and attend the festival and then leave, knowing that it will burn the very last bridge you have to this office."

It was not long before each of the Tetrarchs swore the same vow. To support their faith and their Pope. Before long each had his own directions and started calling in favours as they prepared the ground for the upcoming change.

Autumn of 1799

3rd of July

A sizeable fleet, belonging to The Republic of Oflua, sails south from it's home port, and enters the Nalci Strait from the north. From the south, the reformed and reinforced fleet of The Eternal Hadeen of Dashkatar enters the Strait from the south. Realizing too late, the entire naval strength of The Kingdom of Sescos finds itself trapped within the Strait, and within their harbour at Visev. The city is already under a vicious siege, but it is in the surrounding seas that the fiercest fighting occurs. The combined fleet of Dashkatar and Oflua begins relentless raids on the docked Sescos fleet, destroying any ships that try to escape the blockade. With their naval superiority broken, and their supply lines cut, the garrison of Visev finds their position suddenly weakened.

With the wedding festivities still underway, the new alliance makes their intent clear, as the armies of Rubrus begins rigorous training.

9th of July

The sieging army of The Republic of Oflua launches a massive assault against the walls of Larymnas, seeking to break The Kingdom of Sescos garrison before the quickly approaching relief arrives. The walls are breached, and what follows is a bloody and frantic skirmish, every street becoming a battlefield, every house a foxhole. The city is on the brink, falling so close to defeat that King Bakos Mátyás himself takes up his sword and joins the fray. Somehow, the Ofluan army is beaten back, and street by street they are driven from the city. But the cost is almost insurmountable, blood running in the gutters, and the body of the King himself lies broken, in the shadow of the great gate to the inner city that he gave his life to defend.

11th of July

In the Colonies of North East Africa, an army of The Redcliff Empire forms, and marches north. In a shocking and unforeseen move, the Redcliff army marches troops over the border, into the territory of The Eternal Hadeen of Dashkatar. While the army marches in high spirits, the colonists that they leave behind are aghast. Before long, news of the garrisons total departure reaches the rebels, and a massacre quickly follows. What colonists remain flee, and the Colonies of both South Otto and Ottomas cannot be considered under Redcliff control any longer, instead raising the flag of the newly formed nation of Naziim.

15th of July

The Republic of Oflua officially withdraws its armies from around the city, and The Siege of Larymnas finally draws to a close, as the Ofluan army retreats in the face of the approaching relief. They march south, intending to join the continuing offensive of The Eternal Hadeen of Dashkatar. The celebrations in the city are muted. Thousands upon thousands of citizens and soldiers of The Kingdom of Sescos lie dead, and the nation is in mourning over the death of their beloved king.

18th of July

The Siege of Visev continues. The combined fleets of The Eternal Hadeen of Dashkatar and The Republic of Oflua shatters the trapped fleet of The Kingdom of Sescos, and begins bombarding the city itself. Although heavily fortified, the garrison of Visev finds itself outnumbered. The waves of assault from Dashkatar begins to wear down the defences, and it becomes likely that the siege may soon draw too a close, the garrison physically unable to continue the battle.

24th of July

An army of The Kingdom of Ubren, led by General Janik Tillich, shows its loyalty to The Redcliff Empire and begins marching south, intending to link up and support the Redcliff army already moving to aid The Kingdom of Sescos.

27th of July

Less than a month after it's beginning, the Siege of Visev draws to a close. Walls hammered and broken by the cannons of the fleet in the harbour, the army of The Eternal Hadeen of Dashkatar breaks through and shatters the garrison. The fighting is violent, brutal, but ultimately brief. Before the day ends, the city flies the flag of Dashkatar, and the army prepares for it's next move.

30th of July

The Jinje Kingdom sends an urgent message to The Empire of Attolia. They report that a bedraggled group, nearly delirious with hunger, thirst and exhaustion, has stumbled across their borders from the north. They recognize one of the figures as Admiral Topi Valtonen himself, and the message recounts the fractured and rambling story that the Admiral tells. The Jinje Kingdom gave the Attolian fleet new supplies, and bid them good luck on their onwards voyage nearly three months ago, and the Admiral claims that they encountered another great civilization to the north that called itself The Shuren Dynasty. The Attolian fleet was welcomed, and invited to dock at one of the nation's great ports. But they had barely disembarked before they were fell upon, the ships burnt and the men slaughtered. Only a few hundred survived, and they were thrown into dungeons, tortured for information of 'The West'.Somehow, the Admiral, and a handful of his officers and marines, were able to escape, and began the long, almost aimless trek south. It is by sheer luck that they found their way to the territories of Jinje.

2nd of August

5th of August

The army of The Republic of Oflua, still bloodied from it's failed Siege of Larymnas, marches towards the city of Sarad in The Kingdom of Sescos province of Osnic. The fleet of the Republic, returning from it's remarkable success in the Strait of Nalci, begins bombarding the city days before the army arrives. By the time they do, the small, ill-equipped, and battered garrison of Sarad, demoralized by the news of defeat at Visev, surrenders. 'The Siege of Sarad' lasts a matter of hours, and leaves only the City of Osnic keeping the province under Sescosi control.

8th of August

Surprised by the army of The Redcliff Empire suddenly abandoning it's campaign against them, and reports of the Redcliff province of Ventir being entirely un-garrisoned, The Echyan Empire rallies its army and marches west. Their reports are true, the garrison of Ventir is currently marching with the main Redcliff army, and mass panic consumes Ventir as the populace realize they are undefended. With no army to stop them, the Province of Ventir is officially claimed by the Echyan Empire.

13th of August

Under the guidance of the papal representatives of The Holy Territories of Edoniras, the people of The Kingdom of Sescos begin to believe that divine aid is on its way, and that they cannot fail, not with the Pope protecting them. Morale rises, and religious celebrations erupt amongst the remaining Sescosi cities.

15th of August

Prince Pieter Mátyás of The Kingdom of Sescos returns to Larymnas at the head of his army. Heavily delayed by raids from the remaining forces in the area of The Republic of Oflua, the army is not greeted with celebrations along the street, the people of the city beaten and broken. Regardless, the Prince marches to the High Cathedral of the city, and is officially crowned. A Prince enters, but it is a King that emerges.

18th of August

The intent is clear, the nations that side with the Three City's Republic will benefit from the Republic's extreme wealth, and as forerunners in the Industrial movement, the Republic can offer much. Akkadia welcomes these industrialists, and allows them to work on revolutionizing the Empire's industry.

23rd of August

With the newly formed Native Regiment watching over the Colony of Masbon, the 8th Line Regiment of The Republic of Toubres marches west with a group of colonists. The journey is difficult, crossing unknown and un-mapped regions with difficult environments and extreme weather, but eventually, the survivors of the journey reach their destination. They are met by ships of the Toubrian and resupplied as they establish the Toubrian Colony of Fontes.

26th of August

The army of The Eternal Hadeen of Dashkatar marches onwards. Leaving a garrison behind to watch over the captured city of Visev, Dashkatar sets its sights on the City of Osnic. The garrison prepares itself to defend the city, the last symbol of The Kingdom of Sescos in the province, but they are outnumbered, and few know if they can hold off the attacking army for long.

The Empire of Attolia

Cannons shattered the silence of the morning as word had arrived in regards to the fate of the Eastern Expedition. A gun salute to the fallen sailors and marines who exploring and braving the unknown world. The ceremony was sullen, but quickly over as Lothair II and his officers presented a unit citation to the Eastern Expedition for their service and sacrifice to the Empire. As soon as the ceremony was over, the men found themselves at the war room. Looking over the map of the far east, Lothair curtly asked "How goes our recruitment efforts for the Colonial Legion?" One of the aides replied "The recruitment drive is in effect, but we have yet to hear of the results." Lothair nodded. However, even if they did raise a decent sized army in the overseas colonies, they still needed a substantial fleet if they were to go to war. Creating a fleet took time and money... things that were always lacking no matter who you were. Although they were being addressed as the administration attempted to conduct an internal audit on expenditures and further economic and industrial initiatives were being taken. Yet, they needed decisive action to address this perfidious action from this so called Shuren Dynasty.

Thus, Lothar began to write a public letter, addressed to the Papacy and the leaders who follow the teachings of the Almighty

"Dearest Child of the Father,

Woe befalls the continent as brothers find themselves at the point of each other's muskets. Even our misguided brothers of the book to the east have taken action to stir discontent in the continent. However, it brings sorrow to my heart to report that thousands of the Father's faithful have perished by the hands of savages to the far east in a maleficent act of perfidy. Thousands of Attolian sailors and marines had been travelling around the Far East, meeting the unknown peoples, opening peaceful trade, and spreading the word of the Father. Yet, when they were invited by the so called Shuren Dynasty to speak with their leaders, the vile savages attacked the men as they disembarked from their ships. It was by the Father's mercy and pity that several managed to survive and send word back to the Empire of Attolia.

This treachery is a sin against the father and against mankind itself. It is hard to believe that these people of Shuren call themselves human when their integrity is scant better than that of the Beast! It is for this reason that the Empire of Attolia asks its fellow brothers of the cloth. Will you join us in a punitive expedition against the Shuren? They must pay and be taught the values of what it means to be human, a child of the Father. I seek a mighty naval expedition that will force them to open their hearts and minds to the Father. May they not be so fallen to the point where they are not redeemable... for beasts have no place in the world of man.

Emperor Lothair II"

It appeared that Lothair planned to declare war... nay civilize the beast of the Far East. War was a matter of man and nation. The Shuren Dynasty had to be tamed or put down. Such was the intention of Lothair II.

Autumn of 1799

29th of August

Despite the growing tensions in the area, the new Prince Consort of The Empire of Rubrus, Pashkov Sadoski, quickly asserts himself. Reaching out to Queen Maya Aristov, of The Kingdom of Ilastiri, the Prince Consort suggests a treaty of continued peace between the three nations, so closely linked through shared history and culture. Wary of war, Queen Maya agrees to the agreement, wishing the newly weds happiness and suggesting that the nations build on their relationship further in the future.

30th of August

The Three City's Republic of Ianian makes an impressive offer to The Echyan Empire, offering financial aid if the Empire sells it's colonial holdings to the Republic. With it's homeland under increasing threat, the Empire cannot even contemplate selling it's colonies, which offer a very real source of escape from the armies of it's enemies, as well as a constant, reliable source of income. Regrettably, they refuse the offer, but implore that the Three City's do not take it as a slight.

1st of September

The Redcliff Empire announces the implementation of a minimum wage across it's nation. While this is undoubtedly a groundbreaking and revolutionary move, it staggers many of the governments critics. With war consuming the nation, raids continuing all along their coastline, their colonies seized from them, the colonies they still hold a maelstrom of rebellion and bloodshed, Redcliff cities held by their enemies, and their economy falling through the floor, this seems a bizarre and irrelevant move. Regardless, the scheme is rolled out across the nation.

2nd of September

The newly crowned King Pieter Mátyás, of The Kingdom of Sescosi, does not rest on his laurels. His people are bloodied, to the south, the province of Osnic teeters on the brink. But for the capital, Larymnas, the storm has been weathered. Although the cost was high, it has forged an iron resolve within Sescosi hearts. Fresh troops are marching to re-enforce them from the northern provinces, the army of The Redcliff Empire has arrived at the city gates, and forces of The Kingdom of Ubren are also moving to aid them. The King announces a day of mourning, both for his father, and for the thousands of men that lay down their lives to hold the city, but once the day has passed, he turns to the future, training his remaining army and preparing to march south.

6th of September

A diplomatic party of The Republic of Toubres makes the long journey east, sailing through the ice-cold waters to the north as they skirt The Kingdom of Aontas. Aontas is not their intended destination, instead they continue westwards, until they arrive into a port of The Empire of Rubrus. They are greeted by the local government, and their arrival is quickly announced to the Empress. Driven by curiosity, the Empress herself travels to meet the diplomatic party, who congratulate her on her new marriage, and suggest that Toubres, and the alliance of Rubrus and The Kingdom of Claidor should look into building ties between the three great nations.

9th of September

The army of The Eternal Hadeen of Dashkatar continues its march towards Osnic, joining with a force of The Republic of Oflua. They reach the city uncontested, and begin preparing for a siege. Buoyed by the promise of support from the north, the garrison of the city dig in, preparing for a long siege.

10th of September

In the colonies of The Empire of Attolia, a recruitment drive begins. Echoing the strategy already employed by The Republic of Toubres just months earlier, the Empire announces raising native regiments, forming the Attolian Colonial Legion. The plan is initially met with only moderate support. In a world suddenly full with pushes to allow natives to become citizens relatively easily, the required seven years of good service to earn the same rights under the Attolian scheme seems too extreme to many natives. Regardless, some natives do take up the offer, and a handful of regiments are raised.

12th of September

The Republic of Oflua, still reeling slightly from its defeat at the Siege of Larymnas, and at the Battle of the River Kairis, takes a moment to rethink it's strategy. As allies continue to flood to to the aid of The Kingdom of Sescos, the Republic turns to some of it's own allies. Opening it's borders to the north, the Republic calls for The Kingdom of Ilastiri to send forces to join the fight. Ilastiri hesitates, mulling over the decision for several days. However with the recent decreased threat of war on it's own borders, and it's other neighbor recently reinstating it's support for The Eternal Hadeen of Dashkatar, the Kingdom makes the bold step of announcing its support for The Republic. Through that, Ilastiri announces war on The Kingdom of Sescos, mobilizes it's armies, and another player enters the war.

16th of September

In an impressively planned operation, The Empire of Attolia tackles the unwieldy beast that is administration. The scheme takes on wasteful spending head on and, in what is a surprise to everyone, not least the organizers themselves, it proves to be a remarkable success. The administration of Attolia is whipped into shape, and the cost plummets to record lows.

17th of September

Continuing the building of their relationship with The Akkadian Empire,The Three City's Republic of Ianian suggests the formation of a defensive pact, as well as forming The European Trading League, granting Akkadia exclusion from the Mediterranean Tax, as well as encouraging greater trade between the two nations. While Akkadia has certainly enjoyed its growing bond with the Republic, the recent developments to the south of The Eternal Hadeen of Dashkatar prevents Akkadia from complying with the Republic's request for troops to be shipped to aid in the defense of the Three City's. They accept the League, and the defensive pact, promising to aid the Republic if war does erupt, but for now, their priority is the matters closer to home.

19th of September

The Republic of Toubres, evidently keen to further cement their naval strength, begins constructing new vessels, to supplement their already impressive fleet. These new ships will be cutting edge, employing all of the Republic's naval prowess. Not only will they be some of the finest ships to ever sail the oceans of the world, they are also a clear sign of intent. With the greatest colonial holdings of any of the European powers, and one of the most powerful navies, Toubres is quickly becoming a global power.

21st of September

Continuing to show their support for The Kingdom of Sescos, The Redcliff Empire offers to send the entire Resdian force to support the Kingdom. Unsurprisingly, Sescos accepts, and the Redcliff force finds themselves with the problem of moving the soldiers to where they need to be. With naval superiority firmly in the hands of their enemies, sailing their troops the entire distance would be suicide. They instead intend to sail the short distance to the Redcliff mainland, and then march the remaining distance, somehow navigating through Echyan controlled land. Unfortunately their wariness does not save them. Almost as soon as they embark, the Echyan navy intercepts them. The few that survive are forced to retreat back to the relative safety of Resdian.

23rd of September

Just days after their catastrophic loss surrounding the province of Resdian, The Redcliff Empire calls on one of it's closest allies, The Hastel Dominions, to join it in the war. The Dominions are torn, they cannot deny the call of their ally, and the conflict is literally on their doorstep, but the increasing military actions of The Kingdom of Vendsyssel to their east leaves them wary of over-committing themselves too far from their borders. Regardless, they do not ignore the call, sending a force south, and officially declaring war on The Kingdom of Sescos and it's allies.

25th of September

The Three City's Republic of Ianian, in what is a clear reaction to the mustering of an army belonging to The Holy Territories of Edoniras on their border, finish constructing a series of forts and artillery emplacements along every major road into their territories. Although the cost is high for such extensive defenses, the Republic's economy is able to handle it, and it turns the prospect of invading the Three City's into a daunting one.

28th of September

Continuing it's string of revolutionary new reforms, The Empire of Attolia strives to improve the effectiveness of it's agricultural practices, employing new farming machines across the nation. The new principles are successful, encouraging the continued industrialization, as people continue to flock from the trade of farming towards more modern and industrial careers.

30th of September

As The Kingdom of Aontas seems to hesitate, The Republic of Toubres does not waste the opportunity. Another colony is claimed by the Republic, with Matos being founded. Due to already sharing borders with other colonies of Toubres, and it's people sharing a cultural history with natives already enjoying life beneath the Republic's rule, the colony quickly settles into it's new role.

The Empire of Attolia

The European Fleet of the Imperial Attolian Navy set off from their ports, heading to the Far East to meet up with the Admiral in Jinje then head to the Shuren Dynasty to demand reparations or face punitive actions in the form of coastal raiding and privateering. Shuren ports would be bombarded if the Shuren Dynasty did not comply. All in, the fleet composed of 22 Ships of the Line, a rather formidable fleet. The fleet would be joined by ships of the Ionian, arguably the masters of the Atlantic and perhaps others who have yet to answer the call to arms. The Shuren Dynasty was rumored to be massive, but would it be able to fight against a coalition of some of the premier powers of Europe?

Regardless, the matters of the Empire still had to be addressed. For long, the imperial budget had been improperly managed, but now the deficit was almost completely eliminated. In order to further develop the Attolian economy, the Emperor sought to establish the Attolian Stock Exchange. This stock exchange was hoped to allow private enterprise to prosper and encourage business in the Empire and the continent as a whole by drawing in investments to help fund Attolian business ventures.

Or so the Emperor said in his public speech, addressing the coming end of the year. However, in this same address, Lothair II also stated something else "However, as the Empire finds wealth and prosperity, we must not forget our fellow brothers of the faith. Many unfortunate souls find themselves in the midst of musket shots, religious persecution, economic instability, and belligerent politicians. It is for this reason, that the Empire of Attolia will open its doors to allow refugees to enter the lands. It is my hope and desire that we help these poor souls find new, peaceful, productive lives here. We are the bastion of the faith. The College of the Herd rests in Attolian lands for good reason for we provide for our own. Let us never forget that. Thus, my message to the hopeless, the downtrodden, the fearful, come brothers for my doors will always be open to you."

The Holy Territories of Edoniras (The HTE)

It was a warm, yet breezy, day in the HTE. The windows to the Pope's office were thrown open and gently the curtains rustled to the blow of the wind. Despite the relative peace, the edge of the cool winter air was already creep in and the Pope was forced to wear a number of layers to remain comfortable. However, it was not his own temperature that lay on the mind of his Holiness. A letter, publicly read, had arrived from the Empire of Attolia begging for aid in a punitive expedition to the East. A land the HTE had long ignored, along with most colonial possessions. The request was proving somewhat puzzling to the Holiest man alive and he was left rapping his knuckles on the hard wood as he chewed on his bottom lip. Alongside the letter was numerous other reports attached, including estimations of cost and travel time. Furthermore, reports from agents in the Three Cities reported the establishment of new defences along every major road in the republic. This news was somewhat more warmly received; imagine the cost! The Pope was giddy at such a simple ploy causing so much expenditure.

On the other side of the desk the latest budget reports were in and they were, whilst slightly more positive than before, not the glowing amounts of income he wished to bring to the nation. But, the religious ceremony was mere days away and would bring with it countless throngs of the faithful from across Europe. The festivities would provide so much levity and joy as well as inject a frightfully large purse of foreign currency to the pockets of the Holy Territories commercially and in increased donations. The speechwriters had been pouring over his mass and finally, with his own discretion, they had produced something he would be proud to announce to the people.

Lifting a quill and opening a pot of ink the Pope slowly dabbed in the dark liquid and preceded to produce a reply to Emperor Lothair II, taking the time to hand write the response, this being a private missive for the Emperor.

Your Highness, your devotion to the Father - our Lord - is admirable and, indeed, you have proven yourself to be a capable and devout ruler. I indeed cannot contain my joy at seeing you soon at the summit to be held. The matter of the poor faithful lost to the East is a tragedy, I will be lighting one hundred candles in the Serene Palace to honour their passing. In regards to support for your venture, I can assure you I will mobilise a flotilla to join your own punitive raid and God will go with you into the land of the heathens, bringing with it the fiery arm of smite down upon those who would dare do harm to the home of our shield.

However, expenditure in the HTE is rising and travel across the world is an expensive diversion from current problems closer to our homes. If I can be assured a quantity of the spoils, to display proudly and use to fund such support then, with God as my witness, I can make total promise that the finest aid will be forthcoming swiftly.

"To His Holiness,

Blessing upon you on the eve of the new century. It is my full intention that all participants of this expedition are paid generously for taking on this righteous cause as part of the reparations that we seek. May their false golden idols made of greed and avarice fall and be melted to pay for our efforts. May the new century bring in great news of victory."
