Thank you muchly.

Also depending on what you folks think and our ‘final’ character rosta looks like - I was considering a female loony Gythia priestess-y type character, but don’t know if a second character would be a bit much or how ‘populated’ you wanted the boat’s crew in terms of us players bs NPCs so thought I’d float the idea before developing it further (obviously guess we won’t be able to introduce additional charas once the journey has begun?)

Also, @Saix, what would you proclaim the best pie to be then?

I make pumpkin pie from scratch that is above all other pies. Simply divine!

@Pagemaster and I had this discussion not too long ago. I am open to players having multiple characters as I myself were thinking of making a Native in the new world. Inuit, or in our case proto-inuit, are fascinating. So go on, make your looney priestess and let us see what she brings to our lovely crew.

@Lord Pie I'm interested to see what you come up with, but I question if she makes a good addition to the crew. If she can't fight, or pull an oar, I can't see it being likely she would be brought along... I guess maybe simply "because".

As for additional characters, as @Saix said, we've kind of discussed this and it is likely we will invite everyone to make a couple more characters to round out the crew. Other NPC's can be filled by us. There will be between 20 and 30 onboard. Others could be picked up along the way, so if you have an idea later on they can always sign on when we hit Iceland, Greenland, or Vinland.

Ok coool. I’ll give it a go and see how I come along with it and if it feels like a worthwhile character.

My initial presumption was that a priest type character might be welcome on the voyage. Whilst my actual historic knowledge isn’t great, so please correct me if I’m talking rubbish, but someone to ‘portent the omens’ and let them know when the gods are happy or pissed would be desirable to a Viking voyage? (Even with minimal physical skills?) especially where they aren’t looking to come back?

In terms of the character herself I’d imagined someone who is maybe a bit manipulative and even cruel, but truly believes in her own brand of crazy religion and is just doing as the gods command. Not quite sure how well it’d work or if I’d be able to do much justice to that side of things. Narratively could be a good source of some issues/conflict (definitely with Tosti). But anyway, just thinking out loud right now. If we don’t like the look of it we can nix it or she can fall overboard early on or something :p

You know I can’t really say I’ve ever actually had pumpkin pie, that I can recall anyway. Not really as big a thing here. Will have to add it to the list and give it a proper go sometime with such claims.

@Lord Pie I'm not against the idea, just wanting to make sure she fits the bill. Manipulative and cruel is not uncommon I suppose but I know my chap isn't going to take someone who could potentially get them into a fight they're not looking to have, if that makes sense?

The fun thing with the Norse religion is you can pretty much believe whatever you want. Most warriors would follow Thor or Njord for obvious reasons. But at the end of the day, they believe in ALL gods, Christian included.

Does that help?

Would we write the additional characters’ CSes in the same fashion as the ones up right now or would we do them differently? I’m not sure who I might make at the moment, but I’ll chew on it and say when I come up with something!

And @Lord Pie, a more religious character sounds really cool! I admit that I’m not especially well-read so take it with a grain of salt, but if I remember correctly, Norse religious leadership is tied to political leadership (at least in an Icelandic context from what we can tell in the Sagas of Icelanders) so that priestly role (referring to goðar) might already be fulfilled by Åse—if of course that is the model we’re going with. If we do go with that, then your character could be a seeress (völva, spækona, seiðkona) instead perhaps, seeing the future through magic. I would also be curious how you might play it! I do think that being a seeress does perhaps lack the narrative ‘oomph’ of a more priestly role in terms of creating conflict, but that option might be something to chew on.

Given that we are eschewing magic and myth, a quick look on Wikipedia cites from the National Museum of Denmark a possibility of seeresses using henbane based on archaeological finds; that might be of interest to you!

Regarding the character’s cruelty, I think that would be interesting too, but I’m wondering to what extent that might be less impactful given our characters’ predispositions to violence if not outright cruelty—how would you play it? And one thing nagging in the back of my mind is how would you keep her from being too dark? But I’m really interested to see what you might come up with!

(As for pies, my personal favorite has always been pecan pie—though there are many delicious pies in the world.)

If an additional character is being drafted, then yes, I would want their CS to be written in the same fashion, though you can add their CS to your post (I.e. a tabbed list of characters you have). I am personally not a fan of ‘one post per character’.

@Nightbringer welcome to the RP, nice to see another character. I like him and would be keen to have him onboard. Just wait to see what Saix has to say.

A little late, but I like the recent post! The use of color throughout is striking and the description is done to really nice effect.

I'll have my first IC up sometime this week, but hopefully it'll be sooner rather than later!

Why thank you! I try. Of course now I recognize my grammatical errors that I must rectify...

Hey, will definitely try to get one up ASAP. Been busy times! If not before will sit down at the weekend and crack something out.

Fraod I'm not much further on any potential second character at this stage, but will focus on actual posting first.

As I'm writing up this post, a question came to mind: Was the Battle of Thetford not a Saxon victory? I'd been thinking this was the later Battle of Ringmere in 1010, which was a Danish victory. Will the Northmen be driven out by fyrdmen later? I'm trying to square the timeline with the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle's account of the battle, which states this:

WIll that defeat occur later in the day, perhaps, possibly as a driving force to send our characters westward?

Oh good question.

I read briefly up on it and assumed that this was slightly alternate and had resulted in a loss for the Anglo-Saxon folks.

But the above account (very interesting, thank you for sharing @Fiscbryne) it could easily be that the initial battle was more of just a skirmish with 'local' forces.

Either way a clarification would be insightful.

@Fiscbryne@Lord Pie, you two sure like ruining the surprise. Yes, we will have to run away here shortly. It's going to be a catalyst that helps motivate some more reluctant types.

Hey! This RP looks very interesting. The historical setting is very intriguing and I love the rich interiority of the character posts; they lend a lot of insight. I've seen only a couple posts in IC, but may I ask if you're still open for new characters to apply?
