Whortleberry City

It was a good thing for Miles that Route 25’s paved trails were so smooth. Since his daily ride to the park could’ve easily ruined his new plaid button-up jacket. Due to the large bowl of breakfast ramen - that while once delicious - wasn’t settling very well in his stomach. Yet the young man’s vibrant smile would never seem to falter. Looking up with awe to witness an older trainer soaring across the partly-cloudy skies on a Pidgeot. As he would feel a mild spring breeze blowing against his face and styled hair. Calmly breathing in a strong flowery aroma—which signaled that he was close to arriving at his destination. Thus, he had an extra reason to stop at the side of the road, and take a swig of his peach iced-tea. Pausing to soak in that the overcrowded city noise had long faded again, and was now replaced with a peaceful stillness...

At least until the silence got interrupted by the vibrating and buzzing sounds, coming from within his wrinkled pants pocket. Causing Miles to put the orange sports jug back into his bike’s detachable bottle holder—and then pull out the smartphone just to confirm that it was an accidental button press. Briefly squinting his grayish-blue eyes at the screen, and adjusting its brightness to account for the morning sun. Quick to notice that his texts were read recently, as he checked his two sent messages.
No response. Wonder if he’s still in bed- Miles reasoned, with his index finger slowly twirling the dark-red strand of his hair. Before shrugging it off and sliding the phone back in the opposite pocket, where his several pokeballs were kept. Ah well. I’ll see him soon enough, I guess. He concluded, proceeding to pedal onward until he reached the park.
* * *

But within minutes of getting there, Miles had another temptation in his sights. Riding his bike over a sturdy redwood bridge, arching above a flowing stream of crystal-clear water. As he had begun looking for an unoccupied bench—with shade. Utterly surrounded by lush greenery, bright-pink trees and fields of oh so many colorful flowers. Even able to go elsewhere in the area, if he wanted to see the wishing fountains, or its shrubbery that resembled pokemon. Though that’s when Miles overheard the boys mocking laughter, and a girl’s shouted response.

“Why won’t you battle me?!” She hollered out. Turning his attention was toward their conflict—as he stopped to set down the bike and approach them. Receiving a pair of weary stares from the teenage boys who noticed him first. One dressed in all black - including the pokeballs clipped to his waist - with dark circles underneath his eyes. And the other young trainer that was wearing some loose dirty clothes and fake jewelry.

“We said no already. So buzz off toots.” The latter boy retorted, resting his elbow on the other’s shoulder, as they stood together. Clearly frustrating her further—for she hadn’t even noticed Miles walking up from behind.

“I’m not a toots!" The girl exclaimed with a stomp. "I’m only a few years younger than you are!” She countered, pointing her finger at the louder boy.

“Excuse me. But what’s going on here?” Miles asked from a short distance away. Briefly surprising the girl, as she turned around to face him.

“Look. I didn’t do anything.” The gloomy kid prefaced in a blunt tone and dismissive posture.

“But his friend called me a bad trainer! And then they both laughed at me, when I told them to battle me two on one!” She asserted, pointing to the other one. Prompting Miles to nod his head in understanding—with hands stuffed down inside his pockets.

"Alright. Then how about this..." Miles negotiated with a determined smile. Soon pulling out a pokeball and his fat leather wallet. “A single pokemon double battle - us versus you two - where the winners get what’s in here.” He stated, with his hand casually waving the wallet out in front of them. Immediately catching the two boys' interest, and causing the girl to smile. Months in. And I'll still never get over how normal gambling is for pokemon trainers. He reflected, before expanding the pokeball in his grasp. I just hope you're ready for this pal. Miles thought, before unleashing his ultimate tour de force...

It was early morning, and Conner decided to take a trip to the beach. Out on the waves, keeping his balance on the board, as the large waves took him up into the sky. Conner had a look of pure delight on his face. "Yahooooo!" The young man shouted as he rode the wave. Surfing was his passion. He loved the thrill and the adrenaline rush that came from riding the big waves until they crashed onto the shore. It helped him get his mind off the stresses of life. Nothing better than an early morning surf session to start your day.

His Pokémon also enjoyed playing in the water with their trainer. Riptide the Azumarill swam in the water happily splashing in the water. While Storm the Pikachu also rode the waves on a tiny surfboard made just for her.

He spent a few hours riding the waves, but now seemed like a good idea to call it a day. He did have other plans for the day. So, he dried himself off with a towel, put his tank top on and sandals on, then packed up his surfboard and other things, and headed off. He checked his cell phone, and saw he had some messages from his friend Miles. He was going to meet him in the park later but he had gotten there early. ”He’s going to make me look bad getting there so soon.” He chuckled to himself.

After going back home to change out of his beachwear, and drop off his surf gear at home, he made his way to the park on a skateboard. His Pokémon followed in tow. Conner preferred having them out whenever possible. What was the point of being a Pokémon Trainer if you didn’t flaunt your Pokémon around town? Storm sat on his shoulder, and Riptide rode on the skateboard with him.

Conner found the swing tree that Miles was talking about, and looked around, but there was no sign of him.

It didn’t take long for him to hear a commotion nearby, and the sound of Miles’ voice among them. He heard the words Pokémon Battle, and his face lit up. If there’s one thing he liked as much as Surfing, it’s Pokémon Battles. Conner jogged over to where he was, and the two boys he was challenging. Conner wasn’t aware of the context of this situation, but it didn’t matter. Battles were battles, and Conner had to be involved. ”There you are Miles! You just get here, and you start a Pokémon Battle without me! I want in.” He knew Miles wasn’t the best at this battling thing. He needed all the help he could get if he was being honest. He looked to his Pokémon. ”K guys, which one of you wants to get in there?”

Riptide was normally Conner’s go to battle Pokémon, but this time Storm wanted some action. She lept off her trainers shoulder, and shouted “Pikaaa!” and threw a small arm into the air.

Miles watched their anxious stares shift to ones of confusion, once his choice had been revealed in a brief flash of light. As his mushroom pokemon made a grand spectacle of its unveiling — by twirling around like a ballet dancer, with one leg off the ground. Swiftly winning the heart and attention of the young girl that observed him continue this for a few seconds more. Before he finished off his excitable entrance, by striking a pose while facing her and proudly proclaiming its name. “Breloom!”

Which soon received her applause, and then the louder kid’s mocking laughter shortly after. Causing Breloom’s joyous expression to fade into a discouraged pout. Prompting the girl to huff and stomp her feet, as she turned to face them. “Hey! What are you laughing at?” She snapped, with her hands quickly taking out a pokeball from within her jacket’s front pouch. Having the boys’ hands reaching down into their pants’ pockets, and pulling out their own in response.

“I thought we were going to battle, not have a pageant show for little girls.” He scoffed. Visibly upsetting the Breloom further, until Miles' voice had him looking up at his trainer’s confident smile.

“Show‘em what you’re made of, Frolic.” Miles encouraged, calmly sticking his thumb up. Instantly lifting the Breloom’s spirits and his red claws up in the air, as he took a boxing stance. Followed up by the sight of her Skitty coming out and unleashing a feminine mewl.

“Ha! That’s the dumb one who got stuck inside the berry bush!” The kid taunted, with his finger pointing to the pink cat. As she was now prancing around Miles’ pokemon and making playful attempts to paw at the green seeds on his tail. Interrupted by his friend's impatient sigh, raising the pokeball in his grasp.

“Can we just start this already?” His darkly-clothed pal asked rhetorically, letting out his Raboot. As the rabbit stood beside him, with mutual apathy and folded paws. Getting a tongue click and a smug grin from the other, as he lightly tossed the pokeball upward and caught it with the same hand.

“Don’t be a buzzkill.” He replied, patting his friend’s shoulder. “We’ll get some ice cream right after this—on him.” He added with emphasis, tilting his head in Miles’ direction. Capturing the Raboot’s eager gaze, as his pupils practically morphed into hearts. Though it was quick to notice and mirror his trainer’s fatigued stare and motions, as the friend groaned and held his forehead.

“Yeah-yeah whatever.” The friend dismissed. With his Raboot uttering similarly critical noises in agreement.

While Miles maintained his upbeat appearance and waited for the second pokemon to be shown. He turned his smile toward the violet-eyed trainer that nervously approached him. “Is something wrong?” He wondered, as his cheerful tone seemed to ease her worries. “Oh. And I’m Miles, by the way.”

“Um. Will your pokemon be alright against the fire type?” She questioned with hushed concern, hands stuck inside her pockets.

“Of course he is.” Miles answered, unconsciously rubbing the back of his head. Hmm. What’s the problem with that type again?

But remembering why would have to wait—as Miles looked at the kid’s Bouffalant. Soon hearing the kid hollering out, with hands raised next to his mouth. “Come on! Are you two scared or what?”

As Miles stepped forward, with a cool-sounding statement readily prepared. “I’m never afraid to win-” He began, before pausing at the familiar voice that was calling out his name from behind. Receiving all of their eyes and witnessing Conner running up to him, while proceeding to intervene before the battle started.

“You idiot! Can’t you see that we're about to double battle? Meaning four people only.” The kid rebuked bluntly, with a glare. “So unless you have money to chip in, you better scram!” He asserted. However, as if on cue, a blonde boy their age would suddenly rush up to the group with a friendly wave.

“Looking for a third team member?” The perky teen questioned, raising his arms in a bright yellow jacket, with both of his hands covered up by his long sleeves. Approaching the two boys like they knew each other, with his Joltik emerging from underneath his hood. Immediately causing the louder boy to run behind his darkly-dressed friend, and the Bouffalant to subsequently retreat behind his trainer. Both shivering in unison, as their unsolicited protector sighed.

“Weren’t you still grounded?” The boy remarked. As the blonde kid smiled slyly and shrugged his shoulders.

Leaving the conversation at that—Miles proceeded to clear his throat and address the newcomer. "If everyone's willing to accept my friend’s participation-"

“T-that’s fine.” The orange-haired boy stuttered, pointing at Joltik. “B-but so long as it's your friend fighting that thing at a distance. F-far away from us.” He appealed. As the Bouffalant swiftly nodded, and the Raboot shook his head in disbelief.

“Aw. Don’t call her a thing.” The blonde boy uttered with a frown. Soon taking her out of his hood and holding the Joltik out in his sleeved hand. As he turned to Conner and smiled. “Don’t you think she’s pretty?” He inquired.

"Joltik." She chirped with glee, waiting for the young man's answer.

The other boys did not want Conner getting involved in their battle. Conner just rolled his eyes. He actually did have money, but that was none of this guy’s business. Whatever happened to battling for fun instead of profit? Then, right on cue, a blonde boy in a yellow hoodie with a Joltik came out. The other boys were terrified at the kid’s Joltik, and Conner couldn’t help but bust out laughing. The guy was acting so tough before, but now he was scared of a little bug? How ridiculous can you be?

Conner approached the boy and his Joltik. ”Aw, she’s adorable.” He cooed as he gave the small bug type in the other boy’s hands a pat on the head. “I can’t imagine why tough guy over there is scared of a little bug.” Pointing to the other boys with his thumb. “What a whimp! Ha! Anyway, I’ll battle you. I’m not looking for money right now though. I’ve got plenty of my own. I’m just in it for the fun times!”

Joltik chirped in delight at the trainer’s compliment. Eager to nuzzle Conner in response, as he approached the blonde kid and patted her little head. Causing an accidental static discharge to zap at the fingertips that he used to touch her. Making it obvious why the teenager wore such overly long sleeves. Though with the Pickachu on his team—it was likely a harmless feeling that should’ve been anticipated. Not that either of the pair had noticed; since the hooded teen was too busy snickering at the frightened boy’s expense. Followed by the Joltik scampering along her trainer’s arm, until she reached his back and hopped down into the grass below.

“S-shut up! I’m not afraid of anything!” The loud boy snapped, from behind the safety of his darkly-dressed friend. Soon stomping out in unison with his Bouffalant, before raising his fist up in the air. “And we’ll see who's the real wimp, when Bill’s done with ya!” He countered, while placing a hand on the Bouffalant’s hind thigh. As the bovine pokemon snorted in agreement, and then promptly turned his grouchy gaze to the opposing side. Where Breloom and Skitty had already moved forward and stood beside each other as allies—waiting for battle.

“Well boys—are you ready to lose?” The girl interjected with a teasing smile, turning her cap backwards. As the sleepy-eyed trainer had been boredly fiddling with the skull pendant on his necklace.

“Lucky. Close the distance, and use your Ember on his Breloom.” He declared, starting off the fight proper. As his Raboot knelt down and then dashed straight ahead; building a small flame within his paw. Yet this sudden burst of speed wasn't enough to deter Frolic from meeting the bunny’s blazing charge head on. Surprising the kid when the Breloom seemed to be as equally fast and aggressive. Making it appear as if they’d be trading blows—before the Breloom had abruptly split into two separate attackers. Getting the Raboot to squint in confusion and take a wild swing through the air—streaking his flames against an illusion.

“Skitty! Use Attract!” The young girl urged. Prompting her Skitty to playfully lunge in front of the Raboot, with her stubby legs extended. Being witnessed by the rabbit’s cold unflinching stare, as she landed and rolled onto her backside. Unaffected until the Skitty’s paws were spread out cutely, as she unleashed her soft mew. Striking the Raboot down for the count—as he swiftly sat on the ground and began blissfully petting the adorable pink kitten. Much to his own trainer’s chagrin.

“Aww. Come on-” The boy moaned. Interrupted by the Bouffalant’s trainer giving his command, as Frolic appeared to be spinning and dancing his way over toward Bill.

“Avoid Breloom and hit’em with a headbutt!” He demanded, pointing to the girl’s Skitty. Getting the Bouffalant to charge forth with clamorous hooves, and suddenly collide afro first into the Breloom’s glowing tail. After Frolic had jumped in Bouffalant’s direct path—taking a solid hit to his backside in the process. But only knocking the Breloom forward a few feet, as he spun around and appeared to be unshaken.

Watched on in awe by the young girl, as Frolic proceeded to land a Counter with a swift uppercut, that was aiming for the Boffulant’s chin. But the blow was absorbed into his big poofy head instead. Still looking like he received the stronger hit, as the buffalo then stumbled about in a daze. “Your Breloom is amazing!” She exclaimed. “How do you get it to fight so well, without even saying anything?” She asked, with a bright curiosity in her voice. Turning her head to look at him—before noticing that he seemed to be utterly fixated on the ongoing battle. But it was what Miles was doing while he watched, that made her bewildered look go unanswered. Since the girl decided to not ask again.

Ooh...so that’s how you’re supposed to use that... Miles realized in thought, while jotting down some notes with a black marker. Having rolled up his sleeve since the match began, as Miles continued to write on his exposed inner arm.

Meanwhile, the blonde trainer was too busy trying not to laugh. As his Joltik had managed to hop up and cling herself onto the orange-haired boy’s back. Hidden from view and having gone unnoticed for the entire time, as he smiled at Conner and his Pickachu. “Kehehe. I’m sorry—you wanted to fight too right?” He questioned with a mischievous smile. While the Joltik was quick to scurry herself toward the Pickachu. “Joltik use Speed Swap.” He announced. Getting Joltik to shimmer slightly, as it attempted to replace its speed stat, with what would’ve likely been the faster of the two pokemon. So assuming that he was correct and her move was successful—it would’ve proven itself to be a rather difficult start.

The Joltik gave Conner a small shock after he tried to pet her. He was used to that happening, he had a Pikachu. Electric types were known for doing that by accident. Conner giggled. The little bug was adorable. Why on Earth would anyone be afraid of this little cutie?

The other boy unconvincingly denied that he was afraid of the Joltik. Conner laughed. “Ok then. We’ll just battle right next to ya. It shouldn’t be a problem for you Mr. I’m not scared of anything.” He laughed again. These types guys acted so big and tough, and he was scared of a tiny bug. It was comical to say the least.

While Miles got into a Double Battle, Conner and the blonde boy began theirs not far away from them. The boy commanded his Joltik to use Speed Swap on Storm. Pikachu was no doubt faster than a Joltik, and this might of been a problem for anyone else, but Conner wasn’t to deterred. “Storm, don’t let that bother you. Get this battle started with a Quick Attack!

Storm gave a salute. “Pika!” Then she took a running start, building up speed with the intention to charge head first into the Joltik.

“Jump first, Joltik!” The hooded boy exclaimed, when he saw the Pickachu make a beeline toward his pokemon. As Joltik had swiftly hopped up into the air, and seemed prepared to take on the opponent’s hit. Effective in swapping their speeds, once Storm’s head had directly collided with her belly and sent the little bug flying at a forty-five degree angle. Becoming a harder target for Conner or his Pickachu to see clearly, during Joltik’s high ascent into the clear blue skies. “Now, Bounce!” He shouted out with a smile, performing an excited hop in the process. Watching his Joltik land and use her enhanced speed to promptly spring back up even higher, until she became nothing more than a speck. Not seen by anyone else participating either, as the rest of them were focused on their own battles. Or at least trying to stay awake…

“Raboot, get back up and fight!” The trainer yawned in frustration, seeming to snap the charmed rabbit out of his stupor.

“Skitty, move out of the way!” The girl cautioned, with a worried tone. Causing her Skitty to scamper away from the standing Raboot, while Breloom was simultaneously being chased closer by Bouffalant's fuming charge. Getting Raboot to do a double take, as he noticed them both beginning to approach. Wondering who his trainer would tell him to attack next.

“Forget Skitty, use Ember on Breloom.” The trainer clarified, as Raboot turned his back to the cat’s clumsy sprint.

“Frolic and Skitty know what they’re doing.” Miles interrupted her with a confident smile, keeping the girl from giving out conflicting orders. "Trust me." He added, as the girl reluctantly nodded in response. With her worried eyes focused on the four pokemon’s inevitable collision. As Skitty ran up close behind the Raboot, who had built up fire in his footpaw to strike at the approaching Breloom, who was several feet in-between the bunny and the stomping Boufflant’s snorting nostrils.

“Boufflant, why aren’t you listening to me?” The kid hollered, with clenched fists.

“Bre-loom!” Frolic called out in the midst of his dash. Shifting his head sideways to avoid the Raboot’s small flame shooting out of his kick. As the Raboot felt those tiny claws climbing upon the back of his head, before looking up to see himself being used as a springboard by the Skitty. “Breloom.” Frolic offered, while leaning his head in. Letting Skitty jump from one head to the other—until Miles and her trainer saw the cat jumping onto the buffalo’s afro.

“Ah! Now I get it.” The girl realized. As the anxious Skitty proceeded to cling onto the Buffoulant for dear life. As the Buffoulant ignored the trainer’s orders to wait and immediately used Stomp—angrily slamming its front hooves onto the ground. Surprised at Buffoulant’s lack of concern for friendly-fire, as both Frolic and Raboot were forced to hastily dodge backward on either side of him. Knocking the pair on their rear ends, as the ground shook underneath them. “Skitty, use Sing!” She declared, as her Skitty began to meow melodically and cause the Buffoulant to stop and waver where it stood. While Breloom had already begun to move away without hesitation. In contrast, the stunned Raboot only turned his head toward the two clashing boys.

“Dumbass, you forgot to feed him this morning, didn’t you?” The darkly-dressed boy chided, putting his friend in a headlock and grinding his knuckles against his orange head.

“Ow! Stop it, Fritz!” He complained. "You're going to be the reason we lose to a girl-" Before they were interrupted by the crashing sound of Boffulant’s sudden fall. Getting them to notice the slumbering buffalo was lying flat and had pinned the knocked-out Raboot partially underneath him.

I really need to read the rest of my grandfather’s books... Miles noted, continuing to scribble the last of his notes down on his other arm.

Storm’s head collided with the Joltik, and sent her flying however. The bug started jumping, and it made it really difficult to hit the small bug type again. She jumped high into the air. “That’s annoying, but she can’t stay up there forever. In the meantime, use Agility to boost your speed, and then use Double Team to confuse her!

Storm started running around circles progressively picking up Speed. Then she made illusory clones of herself that were also running around in circles, making it difficult to tell which one was real.

While he couldn’t actually pay attention to the battle his friend was taking part in, the arguing of his opponents was hard to ignore. “No the reason you’re going to lose is because your fighting each other. Come on Miles, you got this dude!”

The boys were left staring at their fainted pokemon in disbelief. Both showing looks of guilt and disappointment when hearing Conner’s countering remark. Returning the defeated pair to their pokeballs, shortly after they realized that neither one was going to get back up. While at the same time, the young girl jumped for joy and exclaimed. “We did it!” Proceeding to miff the teens further, by her joining in with Skitty happily dancing along with his Breloom.

Frolic’s quite the lady’s mon. Miles thought, cracking a smile at the sight of Frolic playfully spinning the other two around in circles. As the two teens turned their backs and started muttering things to each other inaudibly. Though he could probably learn to be a better winner. Miles noted, while fidgeting with a long strand of his hair. Seeing Breloom and Skitty do their best to copy the girl's 'serves you right' taunt. Pulling down her eyelid and sticking her tongue out at the boys.

Yet Miles’ attention had eagerly shifted elsewhere. Prepared to view the rest of Conner’s battle, as the Joltik tried to String Shot the multiple images of Pickachu in her descent. However, in the midst of what would’ve been calling out their pokemon’s next attacks. There was a sudden piercing shriek from the skies—and it was enough to strike fear in the eyes of his friend’s opponent.

“BREENAAAAN!”

Causing the young hooded kid to quickly rush over and scoop his little yellow bug up within his arms, as soon as she landed. “Ehehehe. Sorry man—I think that’s my sister.” He explained, with an awkward laugh. “Let’s battle for real, next time.” The kid said, with a kind smile, before making a run for it.

While Miles glanced down to see that Breloom had returned to his side. “Good fight, buddy.” He praised, extending a thumbs up to Frolic’s delight. As he pulled out the Breloom’s pokeball and brought him back inside. Feeling the sudden breeze blowing across his backside, as he walked over to Conner and put a hand on his shoulder. “You were doing great.” Miles said, grinning at Conner.

The Joltik retaliated by firing a string shot at the images of Storm. But then the battle abruptly ended when his little sister screamed and he had to take off. Conner was disappointed that he couldn’t complete the battle, Conner supposed it wouldn’t be right to keep the kid away from his sister. Although he knew for sure he wouldn’t be so quick to come running if his sister screamed for him.

Miles also finished his battle, and he seemed to actually win his battle. Miles put his hand on Conner’s shoulder, and congratulated him. Conner returned the gesture. “Thanks dude! You did awesome too! I just wish I could have finished mine… Uh, anyway… what’s up with you?”

It was probably no coincidence that Frolic had always been quick to get in the middle of things. Rushing up from behind his trainer, and disrupting their conversation with a bright greeting. “Bre-loom!” The mushroom pokemon announced, with a smile and crimson claws held high. Causing Miles to turn around and notice that the young girl and her Skitty had already taken off. Hmm. Kids these days never seem to slow down. Miles noted in thought, while gently brushing away the hair that shrouded his face. Before watching the energetic raptor swiftly approach Conner and extend both of his claws out for ‘a firm handshake’. Though his friend wasn’t likely to forget that it was more akin to a challenge—given how hyper competitive Frolic seemed to be in Conner’s presence. However, Miles soon interrupted Frolic with an answer, while simultaneously returning the Breloom back into his pokeball.

“We can talk more, up on the hill.” Miles replied in a playful tone. As he began to dash across the grassy field—racing toward the park benches where he had laid his bike. “First one to the top, gets to be on the tree swing!” He called out to him. With no surprises to where his two pokemon got their competitive spirit. As the young athlete managed to run alongside with his bike—and still impress a few bystanders with how fast his legs could carry him. Giving his surfing buddy a chance to spot something bright red, out from the corner of his eye. But the source of it would disappear too quickly from his sight, for him to know what it really was. So it was easy to mistake the sudden light for something else.

At least until both of them saw it together...
* * *

There were no proper words for Miles to describe how beautiful the scenery was to look at from this height. Even if the peace and quiet had gotten a little awkward between them, as Miles hadn’t spoken a word since the two of them were left alone. After already letting his two pokemon outside to enjoy the view too—and his ‘wingman’ Paragon had assertively escorted Frolic away from the large pink tree. Keeping the anxious Breloom sitting on top of his shell, as the Heracross did some push-ups.

“I um-” Miles started out, with a short pause to reconsider his words. Sounding far less upbeat than he tended to be in this situation. “This might sound like a weird question but...do you have anybody that you like?” Miles asked, while watching a school of Magikarp jumping in and out of the calm waters below. Before Miles looked over to Conner and smiled casually in response to his friend’s initial reaction. Trying to make himself seem merely curious, as he prepared for what he anticipated to hear.

Miles’ Breloom interrupted their conversation, and extended both of his claws for a handshake. Conner laughed, and was about to return the gesture, but Miles returned the Breloom to the Pokeball, and challenged Conner to a race to the top of the hill. “Dude! No fair, I didn’t bring a bike!” Conner sped up into a run, to catch up to his friend, but stopped when he thought he saw something bright red out of the corner of his eye. He turned around to see what that was, but as quickly as it appeared it was gone… Conner shrugged his shoulder, and ran after Miles who was getting ahead of him.

Miles did indeed beat him to the top of the hill first. Now that they made it to the top, things got really quiet between the two of them. Besides the sound of Mile’s Pokémon playing. The view from up here was great. You could see the entire park from up here. There were Magikarp jumping in and out of the water below, and Storm and Riptide decided to join them, and splashed in the water. Much like their trainer, his Pokémon also enjoyed the water.

Then Miles asked him if Conner had anybody he liked, and Conner’s face turned red. Why was he asking this? “Well… I’m totally single… But… um… Why was he getting so nervous about this? He flirted with handsome strangers all the time, but this was different. There weren’t any feelings hurt if the stranger didn’t return your feelings. He always thought Miles was cute, but he didn’t want to risk ruining a perfectly good friendship. He leaned in close to his friend. ”Well, let’s just say… I do have someone I like… Why do you ask?”

Miles had already leaned back and looked up into the pure blue above. Imagining the same outdoor basketball court that he played on earlier this morning. As he continued to push himself further forward; like his feet had when they were zipping across the concrete slab. With both of his hands firmly gripping onto the ropes - or rather - what soon became the striped orange ball which determined who was victorious. Counting down the seconds left in his head to make the winning shot, while he was still halfway listening to his friend’s hesitant response. Similar to the shouts that Miles heard from those he blew straight past, on his way to the three-pointer line. Conner’s actually single? He repeated in sheer disbelief. Envisioning his final throw entering through the net, just before the buzzer ran out, and remembering how he turned to look at the sea of begrudging faces of his teammates and opponents alike. As Miles noticed the score had always been lopsided in their favor. Something he probably should’ve known all along...but he was only concerned with being the top scorer on either team.

Beginning to skid his velcro shoes across the grass below, until he was slowed to a complete stop. Now snapped back in reality and facing his clearly embarrassed friend, approaching to his side and leaning closer to him. As Miles’ smile had diminished at the line that he seemed to have crossed once again. Does this mean...he hasn’t even tried to confess to the person that he likes yet? Miles concluded, while trying to imagine whoever this ideal someone could be. Well aware of how flirtatious Conner had been, with more than a few of the beachgoers during their months-long journey.

Hmm. Well judging by those he’s tried to strike up a conversation with. I don’t think he’d be interested in someone like me. Well, my type I mean. Let alone anyone who only just learned how to swim- Miles speculated in a moment of silence, with his left hand gently scratching the back of his neck. Much better at hiding the emotions behind his returning smile, as he attempted to read Conner’s expression. No—whomever he likes now, isn’t important for me to know. And I shouldn’t be so nosy- He protested, before proceeding to speak out regardless.

“Then why haven’t you asked them out yet?” Miles pried, with his blue eyes sparkling. “I’m sure they’d go out with you-” He asserted, with confidence. Although, it was up to how perceptive Conner had been, to know whether or not it was based solely on Miles' own personal experiences. As Miles tended to be the one who got asked out by both sexes, at least a few times since he was in Conner’s company. Always seeming to say yes at every request that came his way, regardless of the circumstances. Although, nobody ever seemed to go beyond their first date, for reasons Miles never spoke about.

“It’s… not that simple… Conner answered. “I flirt with hot guys on the beach all the time. I don’t expect any of them to actually take it serious. And if they do, great. I scored a date with a hot guy! It’s a little different when it’s someone you… actually like for real… You don’t wanna… scare them off you know?” Conner sighed. Especially when the potential rejection comes from someone you consider a friend.

Then he put his arm around Miles’ shoulder. “Now, that’s enough about my love life. Let’s talk about yours. Are you seeing anybody?” Conner chuckled so it wouldn’t come off to strongly, but he really wanted to know the answer to this question. He had heard Miles talk about going on dates before, but he hadn’t heard of any of them being serious. “Surely there’s a guy or girl out there who would be interested in a fine athlete like yourself.” Conner cringed as soon as the words left his mouth.

Miles had smiled casually at his friend’s response. “Whoa. He must really like this person then...” He thought with reverence, before taking a distracted glance further down the hill. Spotting his boisterous Breloom, as he tried to engage in some friendly competition with Conner’s pokemon. Not yet realizing that Paragon was no longer in sight, when Miles’ attention had been pulled back into focusing on Conner. Allowing the heracross to carefully emerge from a hole he had dug underground. Popping his head out alone first, before climbing up to the other side of the blossom tree. Trying to stealth his way to the top, without getting seen by either trainer, with the difficulty of being a huge beetle.

“Huh? Oh, um well-” Miles began to respond, with his gaze shifting away and up to the right. “I’m not...currently seeing anybody... He answered in a drawn out manner. Clearly having more to say, once Conner had suggested what he did, but instead Miles stayed quiet for a moment and stared down at his own shoes. “I got rejected in the try out this morning...” Miles revealed. At the same time Paragon had nervously peered out from the treetop to watch them. “Since they told me I wasn’t a good fit for the team—even though I scored the most points." He explained while gripping the swing, as a gentle breeze had rustled through the branches.

“I guess I wanted it too much.” Miles dismissed with a shrug and a half-smile. Using his hand to brush the red strands of hair away from his face, as he looked up to the blossom tree. Watching some of the pink petals lightly shower above their heads. “Conner, am I...too competitive?” Miles asked him, looking for what his friend thought, before he continued on.

Miles was apparently still single. That was a surprise considering the athletes usually get snatched up quick. He figured out the reason why he was still single when he mentioned not making the basketball team despite scoring the most points. People didn’t like having to compete in a relationship… Still Conner had enough social grace not to say that exact phrase. “Dude, listen. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to win. But, mmm maybe tone it down on a team? You wanna give the others a chance to shine too… But you’re cool, cool. Don’t ever change.” Conner blushed and rubbed the back of his head nervously, hoping he didn’t just put his foot in his mouth.

Meanwhile, Riptide the Azumarill was still splashing in the pond. Storm had gotten bored of that after a breif time, and went to engage with Miles’ Breloom. She could never turn down a challenge.

Miles remained quiet for a moment, as he gently nodded along at his friend’s suggestion. Being watched on by his anxious Heracross, while he took another step forward, and ended up shaking some more petals from off the tree. Noticed this time, when Miles had turned toward the ocean, and spotted his Breloom and Storm racing around by themselves. Connecting the soon fallen blossoms without a breeze, with the sound of his pokemon attempting to climb back down. “You’re probably right about that.” Miles responded calmly, with a one-sided shrug. “Thanks Conner.” Miles added with a smile, as he promptly stood up from the swing. Proceeding to walk around the tree and catch his clumsy beetle, before he could burrow himself underneath the ground. As Paragon waited there, frozen in the act, with a guilty look on his face.

Only to be laughed off by Miles, as he reached into his pockets. “You’re not in any trouble bud. We’re just heading home now. Okay?” Miles reassured him in an upbeat tone, as he pulled out Paragon’s pokeball. I can't be surprised at how they're behaving. When it’s my fault for telling them that I planned to say I liked him tonight. Miles realized, once he received a soft approving nod from his Heracross. But I guess that’s another thing that I failed to achieve with my team- The trainer conceded, until getting interrupted by his Heracross’ claw, swiftly pointing up to the afternoon skies above.

“Hera—cross!” Paragon alerted his trainer, after witnessing two different shiny objects, as they continued to plummet straight past Whortleberry City. Prompting Miles to turn around and stare up in awe, as a dozen sparkling fireworks had risen up from the city’s parade. All suddenly erupting within seconds of each other, and creating enough noise to bring everyone else’s attention to the dual spiral of twisting lights.

What are...those things? Miles wondered, while his gaze watched the first one. Appearing to be a wild streak of bright orange fire; that might’ve been mistaken for a falling meteorite. If it wasn’t mirrored by an ominous trail of purple smoke—as they each proceeded to plunge further down and separate into two large glowing orbs of light.

“Uh, maybe we shouldn’t stay here.” Miles suggested in a murmur. Yet he was too slow to react otherwise. As Paragon flew in front of him, and spread his wings outward like a barrier. Meant to shield Miles from the purple streak’s initial impact—as it was moments away from hitting his trainer. However, he was unable to do anything about the fiery orb heading right for Conner...

But as it turned out—the purple light would pass through Paragon’s body anyway. Immediately forming into a Haunter, as it ended up being harmlessly caught in Miles’ hands. Wait...huh... He thought, while staring back at the equally bewildered ghost pokemon. “Did I just...catch a pokemon that fell from the sky?” Miles uttered aloud.
